FCE 3 on G5 iMac vs 3.5 on MacBook

I have FCE HD 3 on my 20" G5 iMac with 1.5GB RAM but would like to be able to work on my MacBook (2GHz, 2GB RAM). I know 3.0 won't be pleasant on the MacBook, but is the $99 upgrade to 3.5 to get the native Intel version worth it? I am leery of the GMA 950 graphics on the MacBook. Thoughts?
MacBook w/2GB & 100GB 7200 rpm hd, G5 iMac, 15PB, G4 iMac,   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 QS, AX, 3G iPod, Shffl, nano.

Plus you will have extra features in FCE and newer versions of Livetype and Soundtrack.
To your original question, I would suggest that you try FCE 3.0 on your Macbook - you may find it OK for your needs as not everyone needs ultimate speed and the latest FCE features. It won't cost you anything and if it doesn't work as well as you want, you can go ahead and buy the upgrade.

  • Migrating FCE 2 on G4 powerbook to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro: Questions

I am interested in migrating from FCE 2 on G4 powerbook (1.6ghz) to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro (have to decide which). I have two main questions:
Will my FCE2 projects, sequences, scratch files etc. (currently on external hard drive) open ok on the Intel based FCE4 system?
How much of a performance boost can I reasonably expect after this migration (for example renderings)?
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you both for replying. Just in case anyone else is wondering about the second part of my question (speed of FCE on 1.6GHz Powerbook G4 vs an Intel iMac), I tested this out this weekend at the local Apple store. I took a 12 second clip on different computers and timed how long it took to render a contrast/brightness change. Here are the results:
    7 sec. iMac
    6 sec. Mac Pro
    9 sec. Macbook Pro
30 sec. My old G4 Powerbook
So a 4-5 x bump! Impressive! Although its interesting that the mac pro isn't radically better than the imac.

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop.  How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • IMac won´t boot from MacBook in target mode?

    Hello, everyone!
I am trying to restore the whole system of my iMac G5, from a Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule. The G5 ran OS 10.5 Leopard, but is now back to 10.3 Panther. I am told I need the original Leopard installation disk in order to restore the system from Time Machine through Utilities. That disc I do not have.
However, I do have a MacBook Pro (intel) running Leopard 10.5.8, and have also been told that I can use this as a startup-disk, and that it will work more or less the same way. Problem is, the iMac will not identify the MacBook (in target disc mode) as a startup disc (although it works as an external harddrive).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is it really worthwhile trying to boot the good ole´ Panther G5 from the MacBook Pro in order to fully restore it as a Leopard?
    2. Why doesn´t the target moded MacBook show as a startupdisk for the iMac?
Would be thrilled with any answers!

You cannot boot a PPC Mac from an Intel Mac. The OS versions are incompatible. You also cannot clone the OS on the Intel Mac to the PPC Mac. You cannot use TM on the PPC Mac unless you install Leopard on it (the PPC version.)

Is the ram in my Imac Al compatible with my macbook Core Duo??? The ram in my Imac is 2x 1GB.
    Thanks,
    KANE

    Hi KANE,
all Intel-Macs, with the exception of the Mac Pro, use the same kind of RAM-Modules .
Specs are: 200-pin DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMMs up to 1.25” in height. The SO-DIMMs must be DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) compliant and must be unbuffered, unregistered, 8-byte, nonparity, and non-ECC.
    So feel free to swap.

  • IMac 27" vs 27" screen + MacBook Pro

    Hello you all,
Sry for my bad English, I promise to do my best :-)
Could someone help me understand the difference between
    1. An iMac 27" ( the computer ), a keyboard, a trackpad etc
    And
    2. An Apple screen 27" plus the most advanced MacBook Pro

How would I do the updates of a heavy iMac computer ?
with the MacBook pro, I could go "to town" from time to time, and upgrade/update.
Regarding the work I do with my photos, is there a big difference between 1. and 2.   ???
Thanks for your reply and patience reading me.

ps that question might be strange (or stupid ) the fact is that, I don't have an Apple Store as a neighbor :-)))

From what you have said the MacBook Pro would work better for you. Get a portable USB drive for backups.

  • Can't Transfer my info from Imac( mid-2007) to my macbook pro (mid-2009)

    Hello,
i bought a macbook pro today and I'm having trouble transferring my data from my Imac(mid-2007) to my macbook pro. I do not own a firewire cable unless it comes with the computer? I was doing it wirelessly and after i entered the code said it was transsferring data. But after a minute it cam up with this notice,"There was an error connecting to the network, and the information on the other Mac couldn't be accessed." What should i do? Does anyone else have this problem? Did you fix it?
    Thanks!
    -cobras7

You can make the transfer using an Ethernet cable. From you machine description, I can't tell if you will need a crossover (Ethernet) cable or not. Here is the info you will need to do the transfer via Ethernet.

  • I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this? Thanks.

I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this?
Do I drag and drop the iPhoto files or should I use a Thunderbolt cable?
    Thanks.

Connect the two Mac via a LAN or FW cable and Target Disk Mode and copy the iPhoto Library package from your iMac to your  Pictures folder on MBA. All it takes is a drag and drop no matter how you connect the two Macs.
If you have an external HD copy the library to it and reconnect to the MBA and copy again.
If you have a library already on your MBA and it has photos you want to save then rename it before the copy.

whats a faster internet connection joining one or create one.i have one ps3 one imac 2 ipads and one macbook pro?

For the AirPort Extreme Base Station to provide Internet access to network clients, it would need to be configured for: 1) Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address, and 2) Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network.
Although the option: Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network, exists for the Extreme, it really serves no purpose and should not be used.
