FCE and Export for Apple TV

I want to be able to use FCE to edit my HD footage from my Sony HD7 camcorder then display results through Apple TV. I know I will lose resolution, but am having one particular problem. After importing clips to FCE I exported to Quicktime movie, then opened the file in Quicktime and exported to Apple TV. The resulting video seems "jerky" at least to my eyes. Almost like every other frame was cut out. Do I need to export from FCE at a different resolution or frame rate to get the export to Apple TV looking better?
Thanks all for the help.

Thanks Tom. Could be just my eyes seeing the difference in the results, but here are the details.
Original File from Sony HDR-HC7
Video Tracks:
Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080, 29.97 fps, 98.77 Mbps
Audio Tracks:
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Export direct as QuickTime movie and conversion to Apple TV seems to show some jagged sharp motion to my eyes, so I tried the steps below and got a more fluid result.
The exported from FCE to 1280 x 720 with these settings:
Compression: H.264
Quality: High
Key Frame Rate: 24
Frame Rendering: Yes
Encoding Mode” multi-pass
Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Results of export from Final Cut
H.264, 1280 x 720, 29.97 fps, 17.48 Mbps
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Then converting that to Apple TV file (opened in QuickTime and used export for Apple TV):
Video Tracks:
H.264, 960 x 540, 29.97 fps, 3.81 Mbps
Could be that Export to QuickTime Movie makes an Apple Intermediate Codec file and the export using QT conversion made an H264 codec. Perhaps there is a difference in the way the QT function "export to Apple TV" handles those two codecs???

This is an ongoing problem as you will see by searching the forum.
Out of curiosity, do you have 2 step verification enabled?  It was recently extended to include iMessage & FaceTime & I'm wondering if it might be causing some of the issues that some users are experiencing.

Hello, i have been sent the following email from apple, see below and asks for apple login details, is this a genuine request?
    Thank you.
You’ve taken the added security step and provided a rescue email address. Now all you need to do is verify that it belongs to you.
The rescue email address that you gave us is [email protected]
Just click the link below to verify, sign in using your Apple ID and password, then follow the prompts.

  • VHS-like quality after HD FCE project exported for iDVD...ANy idea's

Shot on a HF10, project edited in FCE and exported to iDVD. Viewing it on a TV is like watching an extremely bad VHS tape. The image is very grainy and it looks horrible. When I play back the quicktime file on the computer, the quality looks fine. Is it a problem with the encoding in iDVD? Please help!

Yes and no... isn't that helpful?
You can't write things back to the camera from the Mac side, but you can within Windows using the software that came with the HF10.
What I haven't tried, but it might be interesting to do, would be to take a project, burn it as a BDMV folder via Toast, and then replace the BDMV folder on a flash card on the camera. I might try it and let you know what I find out.
Edit: Tried it - That's a definitive no

  • Max resolution and format for Apple TV from imovie and itunes

I use iMovie '09 to make movies from my HD 1920x1080P camera that I SHARE to mobile me, itunes and for use on Apple TV via itunes.
I am trying to figure out the max resolutions and formats.
If I SHARE from imovie with 960x540 it goes right into itunes and shows as an HD movie on the Apple TV
If i export from imovie in 1280x720p i can drag into and play from itunes however it doesnt show up on the Apple TV? i thought the apple TV supported 720p? is the format wrong? when you export it comes out as .mov and when you SHARE it comes out as .mp4?

I have been struggling with this for some time. We have great HD cameras, and fairly capable consumer grade video editing capability with iMovie; but we have limited HD viewing opportunities other than a computer.
Apple TV does play it in 720p provided you meet the specs below - perhaps your 720p movie exceeded these specs. You see, there is 720p, and then there is 720p with serious Mbps.
At least for me, when I export at 720p @ 5Mbps the viewing is jittery and not smooth. I guess it is too much processing, although it seems to work fine when it is a downloaded movie in HD, just not an iMovie production.
So, I just use the 960x540, which is clear and smooth, and wait for the day an improved Apple TV hits the market with the processing power to smoothly handle 720p and beyond. I have a big (100") screen, so I can use all the resolution I can get to keep that large of an image sharp.
The alternative is to use a Mac mini and route through HDMI to your TV. That does a good job but is more expensive (triple) the ATV.
    Video formats supported:
    H.264
up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 1280x720 @ 24fps, 960x540 @ 30fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    MPEG 4:
    • up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 720x432 @ 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file format

  • OSX Lion and exporting for iPhone

There was a thread about how when trying to set and/or publish for iPhone or edit its settings, Flash CS5 immediately crashes. The problem has been experienced by many Mac OSX Lion users and they talked about it in this unresolved thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/888198#3851750 but still no updates from Adobe. Adobe sent me a response to my Support ticket that "it's an Actionscript 3 coding issue" then closed it so I couldn't reply. Ummmm, NO it isn't a coding issue, I tried to export an FLA file with no code in it. That's a really bad way to do business, Adobe. But since they're not going to be helpful (and probably lose me as a customer) has anyone else found a workaround for this?

    ccroo wrote:
The aspect ratio of the iphone screen is 480 x 320, but that size is not an option when exporting for iPhone using Compressor. You have to use a custom setting.
    Why is this the case?
You have to understand that the Apple-provided presets are good launching points, not end-all, be-all settings.
And iPhones do support material encoded as 640 pixels wide so the preset for VGA (up to 640x480) works fine for most people. I personally rarely use anything smaller than the VGA setting for Apple Devices as I find that's the perfect middle ground for iPods, iPhones and AppleTV.
If you (understandably) need to limit your file and frame sizes, adjusting the device setting in Compressor to iPhone (Local/WiFi) does the trick - fitting your movie into a 480 pixel-wide frame size and capping the video data rate at 1000 Kbps.
Letterboxing - as in hard mattes - is not needed when encoding for Apple Devices. In fact, if you have letterboxing in your source media, use the Geometry pane to crop out the Letterbox Area of Source. That will provide you with a better quality encode and the preset will know to adjust your output frame size, so you need not worry about distorting your movie.

  • IMovie 6 Chapter Export for Apple TV

Ok, this is driving me crazy. All I want to do is export my iMovie 6 edit in a reasonably high quality export (for archive and Apple TV) WITH my chapter points preserved. I've already made a DVD so I just want the video file, but with basic interactivity, i.e. 11 chapter points over a hour of edited footage. Is there a workaround for this, for example exporting to FCP and then Compressor. TIA, chris

If the Compressor application is a resonably current version, simply drop the chaptered iMovie HD v6 timeline (i.e., the "Shared > iDVD" file) to Compressor, select the appropriate device preset, and Compressor will do the rest.

  • Export for Apple TV with Date?

I have over 70 home movies dating back to 1952 in the latest version of Final Cut Studio that I want to export to Apple TV and I need the title and date (year) to be displayed. I cannot get the date to show up in Apple TV reliably.
I export from Final Cut Studio using Share and then Send to Compressor where I use a custom Apple TV setting which just exports in SD without any audio. The resulting m4v file is imported into iTunes and viewable with Apple TV. On Apple TV the title shows up for each movie but no date (release date?) is listed. Since these movies date back to 1952 I want to have the date displayed (I don't want to include it in the title text).
I have set the year in iTunes, can't find out how to set the date in Compressor, set the date with MetaX, Lostify, etc., but the date never shows up on Apple TV.
I have searched these forums and the internet but have not found a solution that works. Can anybody offer any suggestion on how to reliably set the date?

Hey Jeff, I realized that you've marked this thread Answered but, in case it matters, the issue with retagging files already imported into iTunes is a known issue (For whatever reason, the iTunes Library Database file doesn't update the metadata when a file is retagged externally.)
What many of us (iTunes nerds) do is delete the file from our iTunes library, retag externally, then Add to Library in iTunes.
That's the most foolproof way, though sometimes after retagging externally (and not having removed beforehand) a simple Get Info in iTunes does the trick. But that fails a lot for me personally.

  • Export for Apple TV

I've edited footage in FCE4 in separate projects from both AVCHD (Sony HDR-CX7) and HDV (Sony HVR-Z1U). In both cases footage is in a 16x9 format. When I export and set it for Apple Tv I get a squeezed picture that plays fine on Apple TV in both cases. I've tried exporting at various settings that result in a 16x9 movie but they won't sync with Apple TV. Help would be appreciated. (I've had great results with iMovie and recently moved up to FCE4)

Try exporting as a quicktime movie then convert to Apple TV with Quicktime.
BTW you should setup your forum profile to show your hardware and software versions.

  • I have 3 different accounts and passwords for Apple. 1 for iTunes, 1 for iCloud, and 1 for my iCloud email. It is annoying to remember these 3 different usernames and passwords. Can I make all 3 accounts the same username and password?

I would like to use my iCloud email address as the username.
    Is this possible?

No.  Apple will not merge Apple IDs, and you can't use the same username and password for multiple IDs.

  • Using Color profiles and exporting for web browsers

I've been trying to figure out the answer to this question. As I'm sure you're aware Safari supports color profiles while other web browsers like Firefox do not. I would like to setup Aperture so that it displays and exports images for the widest audience possible. Unfortunately it embeds a color profile and my images on the web only display correctly in Safari. I've tried changing the proofing profiles and export settings to no avail. I didn't seem to have this problem in iPhoto, a picture there looked the same on screen as it did in Safari and Firefox but I can't achieve the same with Aperture...

Thanks for that information, unfortunately I'm not really any closer to solving the issue since I've already tried that. 1) by default, doesn't Aperture automatically embed the sRGB color profile? 2) if I set view>proofing mode to sRGB shouldn't what I see on screen match what a "dumb" application such as Firefox does when it ignores the embedded profile and display sRGB? I've tried going into the preferences>export settings and changed everything to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 but I see no difference in the final image between that and the default setting.
I guess my question is more specific to Aperture since I don't have this problem with other applications. For example, in photoshop if I do Export for Web it strips out any embedded profile and when I open that image in Firefox and Safari side-by-side they are exactly the same. But not so when I export an image from Aperture, when opened in Firefox it is desaturated and flat and of course in Safari it honors the embedded profile and looks fine.

I have the same username and password for my Apple account and iCloud. My main email server is btinternet. When I try to share a photo by sending an email by iCloud I get a message "Server doesn't recognize username/password combination". Do I need to login to iCloud with my btinternet password?

Maybe Database General is the one for your question.
By the way, explain where you get the data from (flat file -sqlldr - or dump file -imp -?), and where you want to put the data (flat file - select - or dump file -exp - ?), be sure you know the format of file of your output.

  • Maximum bitrate and size for Apple TV3

    Hello,
how much is maximum bitrate and file size for Apple TV3 homesharing? I transfared some bluray, but it lags. Im streaming via cabble.

No official answer on this but specs say:
    Video Formats
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
AppleTV 2/3 have less than 8GB of memory to buffer movies but there are movies over 8GB and I've certainly streamed larger than that.
    What lags?  Playback?  Stuttery display?
