FCE and FullHD (1920x1080)

I just bought a Canon fullhd cam (XHA1) and FCE ...
When I import my footages, I get automaticaly 1080x720 in FCE !
From other posts I read FCE can't play with 1920x1080. Is this still the case ?
Do I have to change something in the setup ?
Thank you for answer

Well FCE4 doesn't work at 1920x1080.
So it allows you to import such material, but you will see that in timeline you need to render to continue to work (see the red/orange lines indicating that you need to render).
So once you render (from menu sequence -> render all) then you can edit your movie.
Personally I don't know how much you can notice loosing in res working @ 1440, I guess it depends also how you are going to see your final movie (TV, web etc).

Armando.

  • First Project - Poor resolution when working between FCE and LT

I've put together a 1 minute sequence in FCE 4 (1920X1080) and it looks great when I export to QuickTime movie.
I then use that movie as a background in LiveType, adding a bunch of titles and graphics.
If I then render the movie in LiveType the rendered movie chokes and skips. If I import it back into FCE and export it back to a QT movie, it looks poor - compression artifacts and the text doesn't look crisp.
Is there a better way to:
    1) Sequence and edit my clips (1 min movie)
    2) Add tiles/graphics throughout
    3) Output to HD format
    Thanks!

    I figured it out.....
Rather than rendering the movie in LT and importing to FCE, I just imported the LT project itself. Working between the two apps simultaneously, I can position the text and graphics from LiveType, save, then instantly see the results in FCE.
    Everything is looking crisper....

  • Quality and aspect ratio with FCE and iPhoto

Project started by importing hundreds of slides shot by different cameras with difference settings. Slides were imported into i-photo where I used the slideshow function to make several segments.  As I was choosing the photos and dragging them into slideshows I cropped them all into 16x9 ratio so they would all be uniform.  I then sent to QuickTime movie using the built in iPhoto export button and selected “custom export” setting with DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression with quality set to “Best” and aspect ratio to 16x9.
Then imported into FCE and did serious editing (music, effects, titles, etc.).  When finished I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9) but the quality is terrible and when I make a iDVD the picture is squeezed and distorted into a 4:3 ratio despite the fact that the IDVD is set to 16:9. I have spent over a month on this project and have fellow travelers waiting for my “creative” touch.  Can anyone tell me where I went wrong on both aspect ratio and quality? Thanks.
PS: Am using MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.4 FCE 4.0.1 and iPhoto-11 9.3.2

    Hi
I'm not shure - but I can share my thoughts
I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9)
I DO NEVER - Use Export as QuickTime CONVERSION
I DO - Share as QuickTime .mov - straight off
I had problems with 16x9 until I understood that
    • I had to select type of project as WideScreen in FC
    • Browser Window in FinalCut E and Pro - can extend far to the Right with several Columns. One Column states Anamorphic. When set my material to this. THEN introduced it into TimeLine. Can not be done in after hand.
    • Export as above
    • In iDVD there are TWO places to set 16x9
    - When creating a NEW iDVD Project - SELECT --> WideSrceen
    - In iDVD Project / Projectinfo [ Shift+cmd+I ]- ALSO set 16x9

  • Can I connect via HDMI and get 1920x1080?

Can I connect my MacBook Pro HDMI adapter up to my new Samsung Display via the HDMI connection and get 1920x1080?  Or is the 1080p the best display I can do with that connection?  Should I get the VGA adapter instead?

    Not so fast please...
for HDMI rev 3.1 and above the AOK
However my SHARP 42" flat screen (model LC-42D72U) requires DVI MBP (adapter ) to DVI port on the SHARP.
I also have HDMI( and S video, component video and composite video) Also digital audio output from SHARP flat screen but for max UXGA resolution at horizontal frequency of 75.0 kHz DVI the way SHARP requires.
Fortunately Apple gave me DVI adapter free ( seldom heard nice four letter word )

  • Can I digitize in FCE and then transfer these into FCP?

    Hi,
I have FCE 4 at the moment and looking to get FCP shortly. But I have some footage that I'd really like to get digitized now while waiting for FCP. Can I digitize in FCE and then import into FCP?
    Thanks

    Hey Tom,
Thanks for that. So does edited stuff open perfectly in FCP, or are there any potential problems?

  • Resolution recommendations for HDV, FCE and iDVD

The Canon HV30 camcorder outputs HDV in 1080/60i, 1080/24p, 1080/30F, 1080/24F, 1080/30p. Which of these would yield the best results from a workflow and image quality point of view through FCE and iDVD for creating a DVD to be used on an HDTV fed by a progressive-scan DVD player?
Can any of these formats be edited and then written back to tape without losing a lot of image quality?
Also interested if iMovie 9 is the same in these areas as FCE (which I already have).
    Thanks in advance!
    MikeR

So, it doesn't matter what I shoot in - the quality will be equal no matter if it's progressive to start with or interlaced? I might have thought that keeping things progressive all the way through would be the best for a DVD played on an HD set.

  • FCE and FCE HD Firewire Connection Issues

Hello, I just recently cleaned out my hard drive and reinstalled Tiger 10.4.11. I reinstalled all my previous applications with out any problems, but I had an issue with both versions of FCE. For some reason it won't recognize my firewire port. I don't know if there was something else I had to do to get it to recognize. The cable is fine and the camera, because I got it to work with my Power Mac G4 last night, but it doesn't work for my laptop. Any ideas? Thanks, Matt

All HDV is MPEG-2 based. It's an HDV tape camera. The problem is QT7.4 and the older version of FCE. Some people have got this to work. I don't know how, but many others have had problems using that and older versions of FCE and newer versions of QuickTime, 7.3 and probably 7.4 as well.

  • Just setting up FCE and have question

This is probably a stupid question but when I set up FCE and select my external drive as my scratch drive, where will the project folder be created? Is it on the external drive with the clips etc. I import or will it be located in the documents folder on the system hard drive?
    Thanks

If you set your scratch disk to an external drive, all files created by FCE during capture, rendering, auto-saving, and all support files (waveforms, thumbnails etc.) will be stored into the external drive. Instead your project file (.fcp) will be saved where you decide to, when you issue the Save Project As command. Project files are usually saved into the user document folder of the startup disk.
A Final Cut Express Documents folder is created by FCE in the scratch disk, containing subfolders specific for each use. One specific subfolder (Capture Scratch) will store all media captured by FCE, and you must never delete files from that subfolder, unless you remove the whole project, because they contain your actual movies.
A warning: in FCE a "clip" is in fact a "pointer to" a portion of the media file in the capture scratch folder, it is not the media file itself. When you capture, a new media file is created in the capture scratch folder and a new clip is created in the FCE browser pointing to that media file. But if you remove the clip in FCE you do not remove the corresponding media file. The opposite is also true: if you remove the media file from the folder the clip will still be in the FCE browser (or timeline) pointing to nothing. This is called an offline clip, which may also be reconnected to the same media file manually.

  • Planning Ahead FCE and HD

So I bought a Sony HD camcorder. I have shot some footage and copied the resulting files in the camcorder (folders named AVCHD, AVF_INFO, DCIM, and MODELCFG.IND) on to my desktop into a folder SONY. I shall move that folder SONY to an ext HD. If I understand (and please correct me) I need FCE 4 to handle the AVCHD video. When I get FCE 4, I import the SONY into FCE and carry on. Do I have it right? Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving. Happy Black Friday

So I installed FCE per the directions. All appears right. Refer to the documentation to see how to do the Log and Transfer trick. Move the above mentioned folder Sony to the ext HD. Set System Settings scratch disk, etc. to Sony on the ext HD. Create a bin Test in the browser. Click Cmd-Sh-8 to open the L & T window. The documentation says the assets will appear in the window. But they don't. Now what?

  • Green flashing behind clip in FCE and clip in corner?!

Hi, I recently started a new project in FCE and started to add clips. As I added them I realised the clip was in the top left hand corner and the background flashes green and black?! I've tried deleting the clips and re-importing them and I've also tried closing FCE and reopening it but nothing seems to work?
    Please help

Where did these files come from?
You need a third party application like Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
You then bring a clip into Streamclip and export as a Quicktime file using settings that match an FCE Easy Setup.
The current files look very non-standard for FCE use.
I'm not even sure if they are DV NTSC or HD that has been manipulated somewhere else.
Any file/clips that are used in FCE should match one of the Easy Setup specs or FCE is forced to render or in a worst case not even play. Your files sit in the middle, sort of playing.

I couldn't remember from my earlier experience what the software was that worked, but I found FCS Remover on my Mac in Applications, so that's what I plan to try.
That will do the job removing all the FCE related files.

And I was surprised to learn the new iMacs don't have a DVD burner which I use all the time on this iMac and my newer Macbook Pro.  I suppose that's why the prices start at $1299?  I will look, but does the Apple store sell DVD burners?  And assuming so, do any of you have recs?
As Keith mentions Apple sells one as an optional extra.
There are others on the market as well.
My experience is to do some serious homework before buying any unit to make sure it is compatible with your specific Mac. Some users have been very disappointed.
I use an OWC (Other World Computing) bluray burner with several types of connections and it works fine.

Lastly, it has taken me about 4 years to master FCE.  I am willing to go to FCP X if those here can advise me about 1)how tough is the learning curve if you're good at FCE and 2) is it a better program?
    Question 1.
Totally different to FCE and you need to forget most of what you learnt there to adapt to FCP X.
Most dramas occur learning FCP X because users try to think and use FCP X the the old way.
It took me some adjusting to get into the new methods and thinking and terms used.
Advice: Read the manual and unlearn FCE. Search the FCP X forum or ask a specific question, the info there is mounting.
    Question 2.
    Better is a subjective term.
I have sold all my old legacy FCP stuff and moved on to FCP X.
As a broad statement it makes it easier for someone who knows little about editing and the quirks of codecs to Import and Edit a Project.
That being said the underlying complexity of the app is very powerful.
Like all apps it's not perfect, the current version is 10.0.8 and I made the shift at 10.0.7 when it had matured to the extent I was personnaly happy to make the jump.

  • Intel Graphics HD 3000 and FullHD TV

    Greetings!
I'm using arch Linux with the intel driver installed, version is 2.17.0-2 and it is working almost great!
The only issue I am trying to fix is with the FullHD TV.
When I connect the HDMI cable, the TV is recognized and xrandr shows it supports 1920x1080.
But the TV stays at 1024x768 with "missing" edge of the screen.
When I try to change tghe resolution for any value higher the TV loses signal.
I have no idea of what it can be.
    Does Anyone saw it before?

    Hello, thanks for replying.
I tried disabling the laptop monitor and the result was the same.
But about set the virtual display size I tried somethings, but no result.
I tried, with xrandr, set the HDMI1 rightof LVDS1 and then set HDMI1 mode to 1920x1080, but, same result: TV loses signal.
I tried, with xorg.conf, create a Screen1 and set it rightof Screen0, use the same video card and other monitor ("HDTV" I created with preferred mode 1920x1080), but nothing happens, seems like I have changed nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • About FCE and memory

    i have a powermac G5 1.8 GHz with a dual processor.
i recently bought more memory for it (2 GB) because i do a lot of video work in FC. This is the first time using final cut since ive added more memory to my machine and i am trying to render a very simple and short clip in FC but i keep getting:
"Warning: Insufficient disk space for render. Please free up space and retry."
this is what i got before and why i bought more memory! I installed the memory myself and it seems to have been done correctly.(it shows me how much memory i now have when i go to "about this mac".)
can someone please suggest what i might be doing wrong?
    thanks

The message is about disk space, not memory (RAM). FCE (like many applications) needs hard drive space to work, both for temporary working area as well as to store render files.
What is the size of your hard drive(s) and how much space is used on each?
Generally, you should not let a hard drive(s) get more than about 80-85% full. Beyond that you are subject to all kinds of problems, especially if it's your system drive. So, if you have a 250 GB drive, you shouldn't let it get more than about 200-210GB full. I suspect that's why you're getting the error message.

  • Aspect Ratio between FCE and LiveType

I've been working on a project in FCE 3.5 and doing titles in LiveType 2.1. I noticed that when I import into LiveType there is a thin checkered line at the bottom of the video window. When I looked at the aspect ratio setting in the Livetype "Project Properties" it was set on "CCIR 601 NTSC" which has an aspect ratio of 720x486. In my FCE project, my clips are all 720x480, which seems to explain the thin checkered line. So I went back to Livetype and changed the aspect ratio to 720x480. Sure enough, the checkered line was gone, but the mode automatically changed from "CCIR 601 NTSC" to "NTSC DV 3:2". The problem is that my clips in FCE have the "CCIR 601" pixel aspect, but not the 720x486 aspect ratio that Livetype associates with that. Eventually I'm hoping to export this to DVD.
My questions are: is this something I should worry about? Should I use the 720x486 or 720x480 aspect ratio in LiveType?
    Thanks
iMac Intel Core Duo 2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Type cmd+zero and open the project properties in LiveType. then choose DV NTSC for the properties... you'll be good to go.
