FCE and prosumer cameras

Hi All
Does anyone know or, even better, has anyone tested wether the Panasonic AG-HMC150 or the Panasonic AG-HMC40 cameras can be used directly with FCE?
They are AVCHD cameras, but having recently had some adventures with the JVC GY-HM100, I've realized that some animals are more equal than others...
What codecs would be used to get these cameras to work?
cheers

As an alternative to a direct capture through FCE you could try a software based AVCHD converter. There are quite a few programs available, most of them with evaluation copies to make sure your camera works with them.
Advantage would be, besides not being restricted to the import capabilities of the editing programs, that these programs often contain feature to store the less memory hungry original files, instead of the uncompressed intermediate formats, which FCE converts to.

  • Saving data to external hard drive and which camera to buy?

Hi everyone! I'm getting started with my editing and shooting in the next few days and I had a couple questions.
    1. If I want to save all my date to an external hard drive, so that it wont take up space on my MacBook Pro, how do I change the pathing so it'll save on the external and not the Macbook.
    2. I have 1000 to spend on a camera. I know a 3CCD, mini-dv with an external mic output is best, so what's a good camera considering? The Canon XL2, GL2...? If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!
Thank you so much, looking forward to contributing to this community!

I looked on eBay and saw that you can get a used GL2 for under $1000. I have a GL1 and like it very much. I capture to a second internal HD so I don't have any connection problems. With a MBP I recommend an external drive connected by Firewire as you are planning.
I see on this forum some people have had trouble with Canon cameras on a Firewire port shared with other devices. As a test I tried connecting my GL1 to my external backup drive through a second Firewire connector (I believe that's called daisy chaining) and I had no problem with FCE recognizing my camera by switching to the "Basic" Easy Set Up setting.
In the System Settings you can set where you want to save your files.

  • Firewire and DV camera prob... not sure why

I have been using iMovie 4.x and FCE 2.0 for years to capture DV, and I have always always always connected the camera via firewire thru a firewire hub and have never had any problems... until now.
When launching iMovie or FCE and then connecting the camera, it detects the camera and I can control it (at first) with the program interface, but it will not capture, and it will not show the video supposedly being captured on the screen--I get a blank blue or black screen. If I try to stop the capture or the camera thru the iMovie/FCE interface, I get the spinning rainbow disk of death and I have to give the force quit command about 25 times or just turn the computer's power off because of the total system freeze.
Back in January I added an external LaCie 350GB firewire HD, and am using it to store my captured video, but that worked just fine in that configuration for months, and until last week, didn't cause any problems--I could still connect the camera via the hub with no problems or conflicts. I've unplugged everything and replugged everything in a different port configuration and that does nothing, makes no difference, and the same problems persist. The only time I can get the camera to be recognized and properly controlled is if I plug it directly into the computer and bypass the hub. It works, but I've never had to do that before. I thought it was a faulty hub, but my iPod connected thru the hub just fine, just like it always has, and in every firewire port on the hub so it isn't the hub.
I've read that there may have been some issues with Quicktime 7.1.1, a very recent upgrade, and I did a downgrade to 7.0.4 and then to 7.0.1 with Pacifist, but that didn't help either--the problem remained with both older versions of Quicktime.
I'm going to try resetting the PMU next, but I'm looking for other suggestions or to see if someone else has had a similar issue. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Flat Panel iMac G4 1GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Even the voodoo GarageBand fix didn't work--a major bummer.
I've done other things too: cleared my user and system caches; deleted all the log files; ran disk repair permissions and UNIX scheduled maintenance; trashed iMovie preferences; unplugged the whole computer from everything, including power, and left it like that overnight, reconnected and restarted; booted to open firmware and reset the NVRAM; and tried every possible configuration of firewire devices with and without the hub. The only constant is that same 'ol can't-control-or-capture-from-my-camera-thru-the-hub problem.
I've been holding out on the PMU reset, but unless there are any other ways that I may want to approach the problem, that's what's coming next.

  • Advice for prosumer camera purchase

I have worked with both HDV and AVCHD in FCP and know the pros and cons. I also know between these 2 cameras one is HDV and one is AVCHD (avccam as panasonic calls it).
I am ready to purchase a prosumer cam, and although this isn't related to FCP, I would assume some of you have used these cameras and maybe even own them. So, which would you purchase? I am looking to shoot weddings, musical performances, and my own freelance/enjoyment of recording in state parks, downtown Pittsburgh, etc...
    Panasonic AG-HMC150 or Canon XH-A1s
    Thanks!

I do not have any experience with the cameras that you are considering, though i thought i might throw the cat amongst the pigeons here, i also dont know what your budget is,
but I use the sony FX1 and Z1 cameras, both are HDV and both are excellent in low light conditions.
Being a discontinued line they are quite cheap, I bought a 2nd hand Z1 three month's ago for AUS$3,500 with very low hrs.
They use mini DV tapes, some may consider this a draw back but for me it doesn't make a difference the quality of the footage and colours are exceptional.
Are quite robust, have been using them filming bull catching, cattle mustering, pig hunting and fishing in outback australia on the ground and in the air (helicopters) and touch wood have not let me down yet, but have been through several consumer type cameras.
This is my experience, hope it helps.

  • Quality and aspect ratio with FCE and iPhoto

Project started by importing hundreds of slides shot by different cameras with difference settings. Slides were imported into i-photo where I used the slideshow function to make several segments.  As I was choosing the photos and dragging them into slideshows I cropped them all into 16x9 ratio so they would all be uniform.  I then sent to QuickTime movie using the built in iPhoto export button and selected “custom export” setting with DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression with quality set to “Best” and aspect ratio to 16x9.
Then imported into FCE and did serious editing (music, effects, titles, etc.).  When finished I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9) but the quality is terrible and when I make a iDVD the picture is squeezed and distorted into a 4:3 ratio despite the fact that the IDVD is set to 16:9. I have spent over a month on this project and have fellow travelers waiting for my “creative” touch.  Can anyone tell me where I went wrong on both aspect ratio and quality? Thanks.
PS: Am using MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.4 FCE 4.0.1 and iPhoto-11 9.3.2

    Hi
I'm not shure - but I can share my thoughts
I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9)
I DO NEVER - Use Export as QuickTime CONVERSION
I DO - Share as QuickTime .mov - straight off
I had problems with 16x9 until I understood that
    • I had to select type of project as WideScreen in FC
    • Browser Window in FinalCut E and Pro - can extend far to the Right with several Columns. One Column states Anamorphic. When set my material to this. THEN introduced it into TimeLine. Can not be done in after hand.
    • Export as above
    • In iDVD there are TWO places to set 16x9
    - When creating a NEW iDVD Project - SELECT --> WideSrceen
    - In iDVD Project / Projectinfo [ Shift+cmd+I ]- ALSO set 16x9

  • No conversion Prosumer camera

I am shopping around for a prosumer camera to use with Final Cut Pro 7 that does not require you to convert footage to an editable format. Currently use the Canon 5d Mark II all footage needs to be converted to APR from the native h.264 on my system. But after coming off a huge project, this created problems with time and space. I was coming off a Panasonic HVX200 before this camera so I got spoiled.
Looking for something small and portable where I can grab my footage in native format and start editing right away in 1080 or 720. Any suggestions or help with this appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
.. you have a first class camera in the 5DMkII .. I would not waste money on a different canera .. find a work flow to help .. I use Magic Bullet Grinder to batch convert the files from mine to ProRes422 which I start off go have a coffee and come back all done! The finished files are put into a matching sequence which needs no rendering. It is a cool app .. check out the video and their site for more info (I checked lots of reviews before buying it all good)..

  • The End Of The Road For FCE And Other DV Editing Programs?

I am just curious about how long the average amateur will be able to continue using FCE etc. The reason for my pessimism?
Mini- DV cameras do seem to be on their way out.
A popular UK "catalogue" chain-store called Argos is currently selling around 30 camcorders. Only 5 of them are mini-DV !
The same trend is also obvious in the "serious" camera shops. DVD and HDD sales are rocketing amongst the general public who have little or no desire to edit.
The day will come - probably extremely soon - when no amateur DV cameras are made, and any professional ones will cost the earth, along with their tapes.
OK, we will still be able to use our existing equipment until it goes to that happy-camcorder-hunting-ground in the sky, but tapes will probably be sold at a premium.
If this scenario were ten or twenty years away, I wouldn't mind, but I fear it will be the case by the end of this decade.
Our only hope is that DVD, HDD and Flash Memory camcorders have been improved so that their video can be edited as easily and to as high a standard as DV can today.
At present I can't see any sign of this happening.
    Have a nice day!
    Ian.

One of the major issues with HDD and card based formats is workflow. A good way has to be found to archive the material you shoot. You're shooting a once a lifetime event if you're an amateur, or you're shooting something professionally that has perhaps been staged at great expense. Your card is full or your drive is filling up. You have to offload this material into a secure format which can be stored and from which it can be retrieved. Professionally this means you have to do it on location . The card media doesn't hold very much; cameras with drives built-in are not really practical as you don't want to be in a situation where you have to take the camera out of service, stop shooting while the material is downloaded. This also means the material has to be backed up onto a hard drive and stored on the hard drive. Hard drives have a high propensity for failure over time. For production media and important personal media that means you're going to have to have archival redundancy. You can burn your media to disk or DAT tape or put it on multiple drives. All of this takes time and expense. The workflow issues for memory-based formats still need to be resolved, and the camera manufacturers, just have they have done nothing to facilitate post production with their choices of compression formats, have done nothing to create viable workflows for non-tape based system.
Most of my professional work is done in FCP. We shoot in HDV, recording on tape and simul-recording onto a DTE. The DTE material, QuickTime clips, is dumped to a separate hard drive for editing, and the second drive is shelved as it fills and projects are completed. The tape is kept as a redundant second source. I've rarely had to access the tape. Only when there has been an operator error. The problem with card-based and HDD based formats is that for safety's sake a second archive, the redundant backup, needs to be created before the camera card can be erased and put back in service. That either needs having a lot of camera cards available (which are still really expensive), or having someone on location with an edit system processing and backing up your material to re-cycle the cards.

  • FCE and FCE HD Firewire Connection Issues

Hello, I just recently cleaned out my hard drive and reinstalled Tiger 10.4.11. I reinstalled all my previous applications with out any problems, but I had an issue with both versions of FCE. For some reason it won't recognize my firewire port. I don't know if there was something else I had to do to get it to recognize. The cable is fine and the camera, because I got it to work with my Power Mac G4 last night, but it doesn't work for my laptop. Any ideas? Thanks, Matt

All HDV is MPEG-2 based. It's an HDV tape camera. The problem is QT7.4 and the older version of FCE. Some people have got this to work. I don't know how, but many others have had problems using that and older versions of FCE and newer versions of QuickTime, 7.3 and probably 7.4 as well.

  • Use of DV and HDV cameras with Final Cut Express

I have both a DV and HDV camera. How do I switch between one and the other in FCE?
Somehow I was able to change FCE to work with my HDV camera but now, when I want to work with my DV camera (to print an edited piece to video tape, for example) FCE keep telling me it cannot find the HDV camera.

Thanks for your response. Dumb question. I edited a piece while FCE was set to HDV (although the original video was not HDV -- it was a transfer from 8 mm home movies) so I assume FCE thinks the video is HDV. Just how, then, do I put the edited sequence into a new DV sequence? As you can see, I'm fuzzy about the finer points of FCE. Thanks.

I purchased Adobe Creative Suite with my Mac so I have an installed version.  I have tried rebooting, but to no avail.  When I search for help on the site, none of the help explanations fit (e.g., delete a folder that doesn't exist on my computer).  I have a 27 inch iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1.  Thanks.

Sscrase what specific error messages did you receive within the installation log files for the update?  You can find details on how to locate and interpret the installation log files at Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cc.html.

  • I purchased a blu-ray of The Hunger Games and it came with a code for a digital copy. I redeemed the code on iTunes but the download has been continuing for 2 weeks now and it never finishes! The time just keeps going up. Never an issue in the past.

I purchased the blu-ray of The Hunger Games and it came with a code to redeem for a digital copy. I redeemed the code in iTunes and the movie downloaded fine, but the "EXTRAS" have been downloading for 2 weeks! Everytime I launch iTunes it starts the download again and the counter keeps going UP, at one point it said it would take 3 weeks. I have paused and restarted the download, I have deleted the download, nothing works to finish or stop this download! Does anyone have a clue what's up?

ps when syncing it jumps through steps 1 - 4 real fast, i seem to remeber iphone showing the number of tracks transferring and names, but i see nothing? then it sits on 5 saying "waiting for changes to be applied"

  • I have an Air running Mountain Lion. I also have a digital point-and-shoot camera, but have never downloaded any images from the camera to this Air. If I connect the camera to the Air, what might I expect? Will connecting the camera to the Air by a cable

I have an 11" Air with lots of remaining capacity running Mountain Lion. I also have a digital point-and-shoot camera. I have never downloaded images from the camera to this Air. However, if I just connect the camera to the Air's USB port, with the camera's available cable, and the Air is open, will a program like ImageCapture or iPhoto, auomatically come up, and I can begin to download wanted images? Or, will this sort of connection delete or fry everything on the Air? Do I need any other software on board? Will current Apple onboard programs allow me to download images from my camera and not destroy everything else?

    Answered. Thanks.

If you don't have a backup then the only possible solution is to go back to the store and see if they can get your old phone and create a backup of that. I know very often that Apple employees will wipe the returned iPhones clean before shipping them back to wherever they ship them.
When you say your old phone was "broken" does this mean it is dead and won't turn on?
Do you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, or a clone that might have this info on it?
Other than that I hate to say you may be out of luck. Time Machine and/or a cloning program performed regularily will inevitably save your a** in situations like this.
    Good luck
