FCE audio mixdown

Hello,
I am using Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 and I need to do an audio mixdown. The tracks in my final package must look like this
Video
Audio 1 - nat sound/untranslated interviews
Audio 2 - commentary mixed with audio 1 plus translated interviews
using final cut express, can't find where or how to do an audio mixdown between audio 1 and 2...I'm always left with nat sound on one and commentary on 2. How can I mix these together on to a 3rd track while keeping nat sound on 1?
Hope this is clear and many thanks in advance for any tips
Greg

Hi Tom
I will be shooting a sequence using a Z1 camera and editing using FCE.
Once edited, I will have audio picked up from the camera mic and interviews done using a hand mic on audio track 1.
On track 2, I will be laying down commentary to coincide with the video and voiced translations of the interviews where necessary.
On track 3, I need to have an audio mix of track 1 and 2.
Currently, if I listen to either 1 or 2 then I only hear the sound from that track. I need it mixed commentary and nat sound on one single track.
Hope this is clearer and thanks for your time

  • FCE2 RENDERED Audio has chunks missing (Not an Audio Mixdown problem)

    Hi,
I have been using FC for a couple of years but I have been experiancing audio problems that that baffle me in the last few days(no sw/hw changes).
To cut a long story short, I have found the RENDERED* audio is missing large chunks of audio(although the sequence timeline shows the waveform) so it cuts out when playing back in the Canvas. The file imported plays OK in the Viewer & the source file(s) plays OK in Quicktime & in iMovie.
    * in the "Audio Render Files"/project folder
This has happend using imported MP3 & DV files.
I have tried Audio Mixdown but it didn't help.
Any suggestions as to what the cause/solution might be ???

    Hi(Bonjour)
Is there any song purchased on iTune in your project?.
If so, you can't use this file in this format, because this file is protected with AAC-DRM (digital rights management).
You can export this song to a CD in aiff format (audio CD) in iTune, and import this newly converted file into FCE after copying it on your hard drive.
If you song is in MP3, convert it to aiff from Quicktime player Pro.
FCE "like" aiff file format for sound.

  • Editing FCE audio with Garage Band?

I've never tried to edit FCE audio with anything except FCE itself and SoundSoap. Can Garage Band edit FCE audio without messing up the video? I seem to recall trying to edit FCE audio with Audacity once, but lost the video information when I saved the edit. I never tried it again. It would be nice to be able to cut and past a bit of ambient room noise to cover some unwanted audio.

    Martin,
I thought I'd tried that before and was not successful. I'll try again. And I'll resolve to be more persistent and not give up at the first obstacle.
I recall seeing a tutorial of SoundTrack Pro where you could copy and replace a bit of audio. I suppose that's too much to ask of FCE or the now departed SoundTrack?

  • Audio mixdowns in premiere pro cc - help!

Hello! I am coming to Premiere Pro CC from Avid Newscutter, where there was a clear 'audio mixdown' procedure which i cannot seem to work out here. I need to export a video piece with A1 ambient and A2 ambient + narration. i currently have A1 abient and A2 narration....how do i combine them and move that mixdown onto A2?? help!

One way, assuming you are working in mono, pan A1 center and A2 right, this will give ambience to left and ambience and narration to right. If you are mixing and you don't want the ambience only track to change in level you will need to use subgroups but this will get more involved.

  • Error During Audio Mixdown

I was hoping someone would help me with this issue. I was trying to complete an audio mixdown so I could save my file as a WAV file and I received an error message "an error occurred during the export". I have been able to successfully save files in the past. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rick

Sorry about the lack of detail on this post. I am using the Cubase software that came with the 0404 EMU USB unit. I'll have to do some digging for the sound card that originally came with my Gateway laptop. I have been able to successfully save this as a cpr file. Generally, all you need to do is mark the left and right portion of the audio that you want to mixdown and then just save as a WAV file. What curious about this is that I have recorded a number of files in the past with no issues. Could I have inadvertently changed a setting?

  • Where does Audio Mixdown go?

I've never used the Audio Mixdown feature, so I told FCP4.5 to do it, and it acted like it was doing it, but it doesn't behave anything like Avid's Mixdown (which it puts the mixdown tracks underneath your work). I didn't see anything in the Browser either.
When I do an Audio Mixdown, where will I find it?

Does this mean it "ignores" the 18 tracks of audio I
have and reads only the render file while playing
(until I change something as is mentioned)?
Pretty much, yes, FCP ignores the tracks in the Timeline in favor of the mixdown Audio render files until you change something or delete the rendered files.
Basically, my issue is I made an FCP movie of my
sequence and didn't realize some audio didn't make it
into the FCP movie. So, as I read elsewhere here, an
audio mixdown (or a self-contained movie) is the
ticket. Since I haven't used Audio Mixdown, I
thought I'd give it a try.
Are you looking to create a stand alone audio file of your audio mix that you can add the movie that you've already exported?
If that's the case, then it isn't an Audio mixdown that you need.
    Do one of the following:
    1. Export the entire Sequence again ("Audio and Video" in the QuickTime Movie... Save dialog box). Or,
    2. Export just the audio of the entire Sequence ("Audio only" in the QuickTime Movie... Save dialog box) and then use QuickTime Player (with the Pro key enabled) to delete the current Soundtrack and "add" the revised audio only export as the Soundtrack. Then save the updated movie as "Self-Contained".
If using the second option, make sure that the duration of your "Audio only" movie matches the duration of your prior QuickTime export from FCP.
The Audio mixdown in FCP will help speed the export process, but it won't update the audio in the file that you've already exported.

  • Fce audio export

I recently downloaded a mini DV that is not HD into FCE and created a video. I burned DVDs and now want to save the finished result back to mini DV, but I'm having problems. First, I tried setting my camcorder to record and starting the movie at the beginning of the timeline by hitting the spacebar. I did render only>mixdown. I get video but no audio to my camera.
Next, I tried print to video, but I get nothing to my camera. Help!

I'm running a year 22" old Imac, 2ghz, intel with 2gb memory and 10.5.7. I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV20 since this is not a HD video, connected by firewire. The cable loaded the video with audio into the computer, so the cable is good. FCE is 4.0.1 and quicktime is 7.6.2.
    STOP THE PRESS!!!
I just referred to your p. 309 and found that I had not refreshed the external devices, as you suggest.
IT WORKED. Thanks for your help.

  • FCE Audio

Just finished a FCE (v 3.5.1) project on a Mac G-4 (OS 10.4.8) which included video and photo clips with audio sourced from the video clip or microphone. Exported to QT where both video and audio tracks were OK, then burned the DVD. On some DVD players there was no audio for the first video clip. Audio on the remainder of DVD (which included video clips from the same video camera) was fine.No problem with the video player using other DVD's. I have made many DVD's using the same software and hardware but this is a first. Anyone care to comment? Many thanks, JA

Thanks Tom: There is audio on the exported file. I use iDVD. Will try question on that forum. I'm beginning to think it is the DVD player as the DVD plays OK on other DVD players.....but who knows?? The DVD player in question also plays all other DVD's OK. JA

  • Question about Export - Audio mixdown

Ive been wondering, why is there option boxes for 32 and 16 bit? I understand dithering. But is this just to let adobe know what bit rate it is? why?
Maybe, is it for this?? :  someone being in a hurry, for a quick mixdown for a cd-ready track they could hit 16 bit and enable dither, and youll notice  the "Dither Options" is the same dithering program inside Edit -> Convert Sample Type (F11) in multitrack view.
And 32 bit is just to keep it good if you plan on editing it later, but i dont get this: Why adobe needs to know at mixdown, the actual waves should already be carrying the bit information, right?
But what if the track was already dithered using Waves, Izotope or some other on the master fader for a quickfix...would leaving it at 32 be no problem? And if I put it at 16 would it try to chop it off more?
    Sorry, please someone explain.
Adobe audition is not as simple as protools...sorry about my rant the other day, i understand i made a few mad but they probably took it the wrong way and I probably said it the wrong way, I was really looking for help. it just got me frustrated. I am an adobe auditon user too, as well.
And just wondering, What .wav format do you guys save your Final master in?
me, Ive been using ACM Format .WAV (16 bit 44.1 of course)
    once again, sorry

    djak24k wrote:
Sorry, you lost me there, what do you mean by 2 16 bit files? like 2 in one session? or one on stacked on another? and run out of steam?
Yes, two in one session. If one of them is 6dB louder (or quieter) than the other, then you'd need at least 17 bits to represent all the possible data in the output.
And since i DJ, should I start recording in 16 bit? I have always kept 44.1 32 bit when in adobe because its the default, and mixed down, and had to master and dither in edit view in order to make it go on a cd... And the music is already mastered, but I go ahead and record in 32 bit, which i dont think would cause a problem - BUT dithering on top of dithering like i do to make it 16 again, that could be bad couldnt it?
You shouldn't ever dither twice - you end up with twice as much added noise as you need, and it very likely won't work properly.
Steve, whats your final 16bit-44.1 format? Ive noticed some of my cds havent been playing in 1, later on the cd players motor burnt out (impala 2004- im sure it was just getting old) and got a completely new cd player (the stock tray kind) and i still get errors, but they play everywhere else... and ive been doing ACM ever since I learned what redbook was. Well, at least in adobe.
Ah, I meant to mention that. You shouldn't ever use ACM for anything, because it gets processed by the very dubious processing in the OS. What you should use is Windows PCM, because this is saved directly. So, the only acceptable format is 44.1k 16-bit stereo PCM wav.
The safe way to process your audio is to do a 32-bit mixdown, and then in EV do the dither using Ozone. After that, convert the file (which is effectively a truncation) to 16-bit and do no more processing at all. The rule is "Dither Once - Dither Last". If you look in the Ozone Dithering Guide you will find more information about exactly what to do.

  • FCE- Audio filters

I just started using FCE v.2.01 and i'm having a hard time with the audio filters. I think either i'm not applying them properly or their not working right. I've been trying to get rid of some tape hiss and wind noise on my audio and i cant reshoot or go to an audio house to do voice overs. I know FCE has voice overs but I was hoping the filters would help. If someone has knowledge of the audio filters in FCE 2. please write back. thank you.

  • FCE Audio rendering

    Using Final Cut Express
I import an mp3 audio, and once it's rendered it has pops.  (and creating a music video clip - so not good)
What should I convert to prior to importing into FCE?
(or is it something in the very first step when I export from GarageBand?)
Sequence is Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60

You want the audio to be AIFF 48khz 16bit.
Open the mp3 file in QuickTime 7.
Once open, go to the Menu File > Export
When the Export Pane opens, at the bottom choose Export: Sound to AIFF
    Click the Options Button.
Make sure the sound settings are:'
Click OK, then navigate to where you want the coverted file to be stored and click Save.

  • FCE Audio Question?

Whenever I import a Quick Time movie, slice the footage and render both audio and video at the sam time, the audio when replayed is chopey. What am I doing wrong?

Ok, the file is a Quick Time AVI and the audio is mp3
I used the Hanbrake to rip the DVD which is just a work prsentation from one of our vendors. this is not a Hollywood production.
The files are Audio and Video TS on the DVD I'm ripping from.
The File plays perfect audio in the Quick Time format ripped from the Hanbrake only when I import and rendor in FCE things get a little crazy.

  • FCE Audio/video linking

Excuse the naivete of my question but I am new to FCE and working my way through Diana Weynand's excellent book. My problem is simply this: how can I get to select audio and video together when I want to perform a simple edit. At the moment I have to cut the video and then go and perform the same edit on the audio, I know that i should be able to perform the edit on all 3 tracks at the same time but can't find the way to keep them linked. Someone please put me out of my misery. It's probably something really obvious.

It sounds as if you have linked selection turned off. If the clips are supposed to be linked Shift-L will toggle it on and off.

  • Which FCE audio filter do i use??????

I have a recorded voice over a video in FCE. I am trying to make it look like the person is talking to themself (in there head of course). Does any have any suggestions on which audio filter to use, i was thinking maybe a slight echo and a dreamy voice (not afraid to over do it).

Well, not sure, if this works for you...?  Try Echo and AUPitch...

  • Log and Transfer Audio Mixdown

For some reason, when i log and transfer on FCP, it says, under the import settings tab "(Audio is mixed down to stereo)" I would really like it to not mix down, i would like the full 5 channels that the camera has, there are even 5 distinct mics, on the camera, so I would really like to have this capability. Thanks in advance for any help.
