FCE canvas & timeline disappear

So I'm enjoying the new FCE 3.5, and editing all morning with no problem...when suddenly the canvas and the timeline windows disappear. I go to the window tab and lo and behold the canvas and timeline commands are greyed out. How do I activate these windows again? I'm at a loss...nothing in the literature spells this out. Thanksfor the help.

Thanks for your help...It took me awhile to locate the sequence (I had renamed it)...but a simple click rrestored everything.

Problem getting canvas & timeline to display

The timeline & canvas will not display when I open up FCE. FCE has worked great until now...
FYI - I tried the following to correct this problem:
1. Resetting the display mode (windows, arrange, standard & small windows). Note - The canvas & timeline listings in the drop down windows menu were unchecked & displayed in light gray.
2. Reloaded FCE & checked for software updates.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

FYI - To ensure that I am able to view the sequence "automatically" every time I open up any of my clips, I will save each project when the sequence is opened.
Not sure what I did differently to cause this to happen recently, but now the problem is solved.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

No sound at all in viewer or canvas/timeline

Something has happened to the sound output in FCE. I've been using it for a year and only today no sound in computer speakers when in viewer or timeline. The sound in the computer is fine for anything else. FCE v 3.5
Should I reinstall FCE?
Please help! Any advice would be most appreciated.

I haven't used FCE in over a year, using iMovie 6 for the little video editing I have done. Now I am up to edit a few Christmas videos, and had the same issue as mvh2. Going to View>Video Out and selecting Canvas Playback did the trick. Thanks!

Media Not Recognised In Canvas/Timeline?

So I went out to shoot an interview and I have captured the footage from my DV tapes and edited it all in to FCP 6.
I returned to it toda, and the timeline is not recognising the footage any longer! Although the Viewer plays the clips in their entirety, when you play through the timeline, sound comes through, but no picture. Even more confusing, the wireframes of the footage/images are displayed, but the actual image is just black. Not only that, when you drag a perfectly good piece of footage into the canvas, the picture again does not show up!
Anybody got any ideas what could be going wrong? This is the third project I have "lost" through these bizarre goings-on.

Check that your canvas is set to show "image" and not just wireframe.

Timeline disappears

I have created a timeline with show/hide behaviors that is
functioning correctly when I save a file. When I reopen the file,
the asterisk appears next to the title as if the file has been
updated, but this occurs as soon as I open the file. I have not
made any changes. When I display the timeline window, the behaviors
attached to the timeline have disappeared. It appears that the
following function is being deleted when I reopen the file. It's in
the code when I save the file, but is gone when I reopen it (hence
the * by the file title?).

Double-click On PSD File And Timeline Disappears!?

Have dropped a .psd file on track V2 and want to resize it in Motion window.
So double-click it but timeline seems to vanish and a "negative" clip or something appears in the middle left of where timeline should be.
How do I make .psd behave like a normal clip and prevent the timeline from vanishing?
Incidentally the .psd has a coloured shape with a transparent background.

Hi Ian,
The PSD opens in its own sequence in the timeline to let you change the values of the various layers that it might be composed of. If you make a PNG, it will not save the layers or let you edit their values in FCE.
If you want to change the motion values of the whole PSD file and not change them individually for the separate layers, select the PSD in your original timeline and click Enter to open it in the viewer.

Canvas/Timeline Gone

My Canvas and Timeline are gone. They're grayed out in Window. I can't remember how to bring them back. Help, please.

Cartesian Data Canvas - Label Disappearing

Hello All,
I have an issue in that I currently have a Catesian Data Canvas that is sitting on a line chart. I'm positing some lines and a label on the chart at specific data points, all is working fine. I have a slider which 'moves' the user along the chart depending upon the two points on the slider. What im finding is that when the label moves 'off the side of the chart, it disappears as expected, but when when scrolling back to the position the label doesn't appear again but its actually gone. However, the two lines which i have created are still visible.
Could anyone let me know why this is disappearing? Im assuming its something to do with Flex removing the child label for garbage collection purposes.
Any help would be much appreciated

Interlace issues from 1080i50 to - iDVD, PS3, Apple TV and even FCE canvas

Hello all,
I am struggling to get smooth output from my FCE, interlace is thwarting me at every turn. I can produce a smooth DVD but at low quality with a work around as described at end of post, but really want smooth HD file, here is my workflow an plight
Have captured footage with Panasonic HDC-SD5 AVCHD camcorder in 1920 x 1080i50, imported into FCE with the newer 1920x1080 apple intermediate codec at 25fps
On inspection in the canvas set to 100% I see interlace jaggies, play back is not smooth either. So this is the first question should I really interlace in the canvas at this point?
Export to iDVD, use Quicktime Movie export, import into iDVD and produce DVD - result awful not smooth and blurred.
So try to export a HD MP4 , using Quicktime conversion. I produced in 1080i at 25fps and it's jumpy and blurred on the PS3 in playback. Then I did one at 29.97fps and as expected the video jumped every second BUT there were periods of smooth HD playback so I was so close! But just could not find the correct export setting.
Export to Apple TV directly from FCE produce awful results, however if I use the Quicktime movie and run it through visual hub I can encode for Apple TV using H.264 it de-interlaces correctly but movei not smooth (so it just removes a frame)
So, over a period of 2 days I have tried seemingly every export in Quicktime conversion for PS3 and Apple TV, VisualHub conversions and MPEG StreamClip all producing blurred or jumpy results due to interlacing.
The only smooth output was achived by using technique of another poster
Export Quicktime Movie and use Mpeg_StreamClip exportthat movie in
DVPRO50, set to PAL and 16:9, no deinterlace
then take movie and drop into iDVD and resulting DVD is Smooth
BUT quality is poor.
So, the main question is
How do I get all my nice HD footage out of FCE and onto Apple TV, PS3 or even iDVD in quality and without interlace making it jumpy or jaggy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow thanks for quick reply. Apologies I didn't give full info.
I am viewing DVD on TV - well a plasma being played via DVD on PS3.
BUT, DVPRO50 is the only output that shows a "smooth" movie, if I playback on the canvas at 50% the interlace line are gone due to the scaling BUT the movie plays jumpy, so the DVPRo50 method is the only way I can get a smooth pan for example, every other method just gives a jumpy playback on DVD.
iDVD is set to Production quality, when I do a QT movie direct to iDVD without the DVPRO50, the quality is better but the movie is jumpy.
The movie is also 47 minutes long - it's quite big, file produced is about 19GB.
Also I understand about getting HD quality and BlueRay disk etc, but I would expect to get DVD quality from iDVD, doing the DVPRO50 conversion makes it pretty bad. but smooth!
As I said the anooying things is when I exported to MP4 on quicktime at 1080 HD and 18000kbps and 29.97 it also plays smooth for a short bursts of a few seconds (albeit jumping every second to 25 -> 29.97 issues), in 25 fps it's just blurry and jumpy. (playback on PS3)

How to preview audio in real time in the canvas/timeline

Hello there, I am new to Apple and FCP (though am an experienced Avid editor) and I have managed to get acquainted on many things already but the following is driving me nuts:
Whenever I try to play most audio clips (sfx or music in mp3/m4a/caf format) in the timeline I get a beeping warning sound as if it was unrendered. This happens even when only playing 2 tracks of audio and nothing else. the same clip plays absolutely fine in the viewer but not in the timeline/canvas. The only clip I have tried that I don't have this issue with is the sample audio clip downloadable from the FCP help menu.
I have made some research and believe this is due to sample rate of the source material which is not compatible with that of the sequence. In this forum someone has advised to convert all audio files to 48Khz/16bit sample rate to make things easier. Does anyone know how I can do this and/or offer general advice on this issue?

The list of audio files that FCP can work with is in the manual.... MP3, m4a's etc aren't supported. You need to transfer them to Aif's or WAV files. MP3 and M4a files are delivery formats, not editing formats. Transfering them in QuickTime or iTunes or even FCP or compressor all work to do this. But it has to be done in order for FCP to work with them.
