FCE capture doesn't capture HD signal, captures as SD

I'm using a firewire converter box to turn an HD HDMI signal to firewire for capture in FCE. I have the captures settings at HDV 1080i, but the signal comes in as SD. Basically, the capture sees an HD source, but the actual video has black bars around it to fill the screen. (See attached image).
Obviously I'd like to have the video fill the entire capture screen. Hany suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Your converter will output HDV in several sizes.
HDV 1080i is what your current setting is on the A/D Covnverter.
My suggestion is to set the FCE Easy Setup to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i 50 or 60.
The 50 or 60 refers to whether you are a PAL or NTSC user respectively.
Start a New Project in FCE so the new settings are applied to the Sequence that the converted HDV files will work with.
The incoming files and the Sequence do need to match.

  • Capturing from non-controllable device doesn't give a signal in FCE

I have the same problem as in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9458819 but I only have Final Cut Express. If I use the DV Pal setting, there is no problem, I can capture the video (from VHS connected with a Canopus ADVC-55), but it keeps stopping to look for timecodes (which it won't find, as it's a VHS player). During this searching, the video doesn't get captured, but the tape keeps playing (it's what VHS players do). I seems I have to capture using the DV Pal Converter setting, but when i do this, FCE doesn't get a signal, no preview, no nothing. What am I doing wrong?

The device is connected properly, like I said, with the other option it gets the signal,... but skips parts due to the Search for the Timecode (sounds like a Hollywood blockbuster doesn't it?).

  • Why Does FCE capture DV audio as dual mono instead of stereo?

FCE captures DV audio as dual mono audio files instead of a single stereo audio file. You can see this if you "Show Movie Properties" in Quicktime. Files I captured in Premiere 6 years ago have a single stereo file. The problem is that the new dual mono format for DV won't play on the Final Cut Pro 3.04 installed on my wife's G4 (OS 10.4.11, Quicktime 7.6.2). FCP 3.04 doesn't see any audio for these dual mono files though it will play the video. It won't even create an audio waveform. But FCP 3.04 plays the older stereo audio clips captured in Premiere just fine. And if I export the dual mono files out of QT as a stereo file, then FCP 3.04 will play them just fine.
This lack of backward compatibility is quite frustrating. I can't seem to find a setting in FCE that will capture audio as a single stereo file. Why isn't NTSC DV always stereo? I guess maybe they had to go dual mono to facilitate surround sound panning in 5:1 or something. If nobody knows how to do this in FCE, I guess I'll just capture in FCP 3.04. I spent the better part of a day figuring out this hidden little tidbit. The lesson is don't try to go back!! We must always accelerate forward into newer versions and formats.

The problem is in your wife's machine. She is using a version of the OS and QuickTime that are much too new for the version of the software she's using. She really not not be using an OS newer than 10.4.10 and QT should 7.2 or earlier.
Yes. I was beginning to suspect that this was at the root cause of my issue. Thanks for the info. Frankly, my wife needs to buy a new Intel iMac so we'll both be able to work on the video I'm dumping. I had FCP 3 lying around from years ago and it's the only thing that might have worked on her old G4 AGP, so I thought I'd give it a try.

  • FCE Capture error

I have a JVC GRHD1 and FCE captures control of the camera great but when i click "Capture Now" and and an error message comes up saying there is no video when obviously i have video playing. please help! this is getting very frustrating.

Consult the camera manual and determine what the menu settings on the camera will produce. Your camera can produce differing types of video so only you will know what menu settings are selected.
If your display on the camera is set to show info it should be seen there to confirm.
Another method is to get some footqge into FCE then in the Browser select a clip, right click and check what the Item Properties for the clip are.
From what I know about the camera I'd start with the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 Easy Setup, create a new sequence before you capture.

The 8 pin Lightning connector can only output 720p and lacks all iPod Out functionality unlike the full iPod Out functionality and 1080p that the 30 pin connector has and I suspect that they are coding iOS 7 specifically for the new devices which have severely reduced abilities and perhaps skipping adding the code needed for 30 pin devices to use their functionality with HDMI, etc.

  • FCE Capture Settings Help Please!

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to set the capture settings correctly in FCE. I have a Panasonic AG-DVX100BP and when I capture the video, the quality is terrible. Now I know that the capture viewer doesn't play the video in the quality that it is recorded. But I tested what I captured by exporting it to a QT movie and it still looks terrible. Yet, when I view the video in the preview window, before I capture, it looks exactly how I want it to look, how it was shot. My current settings are: Format: DV/Panasonic DVCPRO Rate: 29.97fps Use: DV-NTSC. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Is your clip in the QuickTime player set to high quality playback? You really need to view this material on a video monitor, not a computer monitor.

  • FCE Capture-sample rate error

After capturing Digital8 footage off my Sony DCR-TRV310, I get this error.....
"The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the video and audio of these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the audio sample rate of capture preset matches the sample rate of your tape."
So far, in spot checking the media it seems to be OK, but I'm anal about errors! I couldn't find the audio sample rate for the camera/tape in the sony manual, any ideas? Also were do I select the audio sample rate of capture preset, even if I knew the tapes sample rate? Or is this nothing to worry about
    Thanks, Schooner

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Usually, camcorders allows to set the audio sample rate to 12 bit (32 kHz) or 16bit (48 kHz).
The audio sample rate for DCR-TRV 310 can be set to 12 or 16 bit. See page 57 in this user manual:
    http://www.mediacollege.com/equipment/manual/sony/camera/dcrtrv315.pdf
FCE easy setup allows to select DV-NTSC 32 or 48 kHz for sequence. This settings apply to capture session too. The message you've got means that the audio sample rate on tape doesn't match the sequence audio format.
This problem may give a drift synch between audio and video.
First check the item format for video clip in browser. The audio sample rate should be 32 or 48 kHz. Note it and select the right setup in easy setup dialog. Create a new sequence and insert your video clip.

  • FCE capture from my Canon XHA1 captures as one long clip

I've never had this problem capture using FCE before. I'm capturing from a Canon XHA1 and it's capturing the video as one long clip rather than the many short clips I shot. And unlike when you capture DV, you can't use the "DV start/stop Detect option" when the footage is HD..so that's not a solution.
I'm using a new Macbook pro and was wondering if that has anything to do with it given that i"m using the newest OSX as well.
Any ideas? It appeared to do the same thing when I captured into iMovie.
Or or is there a setting on the camera that I've failed to change?

    Dear Phojo1,
I also have a XHA1 and am experiencing the same problem. I was wondering if you shot your footage in HD, and what are your settings on your camera for recording and outputting. The first footage I captured I used hd with 1440x 1080 apple intermediate with 29.97 rate. I had no problem. It captured each clip separately. Now I can only capture with dv/ntsc settings. I'm am trying to see where the problem is. By the way this started happening when I upgraded to 4.01. It also does the same in imovie. Thanks for any information.

  • FCE: Capturing footage from my Canon XL1

Got FCE and when capturing footage from my Canon XL1 I get the video however there is no audio!
Tried capturing footage via iMovies and works no problem!
Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I'm using a external mic. on my XL1 into one ch. on the audio inputs. Also scratch disks is on a external 1TB WD drive. Finally tried virtually all the set-ups on the 'easy set-up' but still no joy.
Can anyone throw me a life line on this one?!

sorry I should have made myself abit clearer.....when the tape is played back in my XL1 I can hear audio when my headphones are pluged into the camera also the camera has audio monitors which I can see movement verifying there is audio. However in FCE I don't see any audio level movement.
In terms of equip. I just have a external WD 1TB drive (USB), firewire cable for video camera and the USB cable for the keyboard & mouse.
Additional application: Flip video s/w (however had fce issue prior to installing this).

  • FCE capture from iSight on iMac?

    Sorry for the newbie question..
I just tried my new iMac and FCE, and I was wondering how to capture from the builtin iSight camera?
I know this is 2 questions, but can I also capture from my home movie DVD's?
    Thanks
    Gray

Neither. I believe the current version of iMovie will capture from the iSight.

  • Split FCE Capture Scratch files?

I have some captured video I'd like to archive onto DVD, but I hadn't set the file size limit in Final Cut when I did the importing and now the video files are too big. Is there a way to split these video files into smaller pieces without messing up my Final Cut project?

Not without breaking the relationship between the clips and your FCE project file.
However, you can use FCE to 'split' your video clip files into smaller pieces. Just place one of the clips on the timeline, select a section that is less than about 20 minutes and Export it to QuickTime Movie, be sure to CHECK the option for 'Make Movie Self-Contained'. The resulting file will be an exact copy of that portion of your original clip file. The reason for the 20 minute limit is that for DV material that is about all you can fit on a single-layer data DVD.

  • Help! New to FCE - captured audio out of sync

I just switched from a PC to a Macbook Pro. I had been using Sony Vegas on the PC and have switched to FCE since Vegas isn't available on Mac. I tried capturing my first footage last night into FCE. The audio on the tape was 32kHz, so I went to EasySetup and selected the DV-NTSC 32kHz setting. After capturing about an hour, it gave me a message saying analyzing or rendering audio for about 5-10 minutes. When that was done, I tried to play the clip, bit the video and audio were about 1 sec out of sync (video was ahead by 28 frames). In this case, I was able to unlink the audio/video and manually re-sync them, but can anyone tell me what might have caused them to be captured out of sync, and what to do to ensure that it won't happen again?
    Thanks!
    Erich

Thanks, I'll give that a try later today and see if that solves the problem.
One other question, does video imported through iMovie need to be rendered in FCE? I tried capturing some footage in iMovie (with the same setup) and it played fine in iMovie (no sync problems) and when I imported it into FCE, it played fine in the viewer, but when I dropped it into the sequence timeline and tried to play it there, I couldn't hear the audio, just a beeping sound, and there was a red bar over the sequence to indicate that it needed rendering.

  • FCE capture

I have recently purchased FCE 3.5 but cannot get it to talk to my JVC GR-D70 camera. The camera talks fine to iMovie so connections are okay. The camera is about 2 1/2 years old and does not appear on the "qualified devices" list for FCE 3 or 3.5. I've tried different set-ups and none seem to work.
I rang Mac Help and because my camera wasn't on the "qualified" list they could not help me.
Will a firewire DV converter help my situation here or have I wasted my money buying this program?
Do I have to but a new camera?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is extremely unlikely that you will need to buy anything else.
The problem is most likely caused by incorrect Easy Setup, bad connections or a bad installation of FCE.
First disconnect and reconnect ALL the FW connections.
Set Easy Setup to DV-PAL (or DV-NTSC according to your camera).
Have the camera switched on in VTR (Play) Mode BEFORE you launch FCE.
Then in the File Menu select "CAPTURE" (Not "Import" or anything else).
    That should get things going.
If your camera is still not seen go to View>Video Out and click "Refresh Video Devices".
    Ian,

  • FCE Capture Window

I am using FCE HD 3.5.1 and when I view material in the capture window I can't hear any sound. I prefer to clip capture rather than capture all my rushes and doing this without sound is a pain.
This must be a simple user error...

FCE does not play the audio through the Mac's speakers or audio out during capture. It has always been this way. If you really need to monitor the audio during capture you will have to connect headphones or external speakers to your camera's a/v (audio) out. The audio is captured with the video, it's just not played out during capture.
