FCE Capture Window

I am using FCE HD 3.5.1 and when I view material in the capture window I can't hear any sound. I prefer to clip capture rather than capture all my rushes and doing this without sound is a pain.
This must be a simple user error...

FCE does not play the audio through the Mac's speakers or audio out during capture. It has always been this way. If you really need to monitor the audio during capture you will have to connect headphones or external speakers to your camera's a/v (audio) out. The audio is captured with the video, it's just not played out during capture.

  • FCE4 - Capture window goes red when Safari open on my second screen

I have a Mac Pro 2008 Model with an nvidia 8800 graphics card and two 20' screens.
When I capture any video into FCE4, if I have Safari open on my other monitor, FCE capture window goes red and I am unable to view footage being imported. Exit out of Safari and the capture window appears. Sometimes, only half the window is red (diagonally)!!
Is there any software fix for this or does it mean anything else?
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Have just checked with Firefox and it doesn't happen!! :-))
I only have one user on this mac and that's me.
My wife and two sons rarely use this machine as I use it for work.
Maybe I should have a second user just to check things like this out!
    Thanks for your help.

  • FCE HD Crashes when trying to open "capture" window.

The subject line says it all.... I open FCE HD, try to open the capture window (either by shortcut or by menu) I get the "Initializing Capture" and boom, FCE closes down. It's not even the kind of crash that gives me a dialog box with an opportunity to report the crash to Apple.
I haven't used FCE since I upgraded to Tiger...could that be it?
    Any ideas?

See this article: it may be all you need:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
    I did the following:
    removed:
system library:preferences: anything with Quicktime in name
system library:quicktime: I discarded all of these components, but then had to reinstall them from their various install disks (FCE, LiveType, etc.); I'd save them in another folder and see what shows up after a Quicktime reinstallation, and put back the ones which QT didn't install itself. After install, if everything works, then you've got a good set; if something still is awry, try putting the old, pre-install components back one at a time until everything works. (fingers crossed).
user library:preference: anything with Quicktime in the name
    Applications: quicktime player
This is a not a guaranteed comprehensive list: I'm doing it from memory and searching around my system for quicktime system files. The diciest part would be the "components" some of which are part of the quicktime installation, some of which come from other applications.
Then I downloaded the latest Quicktime from the quicktime area and installed it.
Before you mess with this, do a back up of your system so you don't wind up with something which doesn't work at all.
Oh, and one other thought: if you have any antivirus software installed, turn it off.

  • Capture window preferences? (canon hv20/fce hd)

When i select file/capture, i am only given a small dialog box for naming the file, then it immediately starts to "capture now" and obviously triggers the playhead on the camera. I can't find anything in the preferences that would seem to control the capture window (which i dont even see at all)...if i hit esc to halt the "capture now" then it just takes me back to the browser/etc windows.
maybe I am missing something obvious? or maybe this is a compatibility issue?
any ideas would be superfantasticawesome as I am on a deadline...
    thanks,
    trace

Let's start with what format you're working in. If you're using HDV, that's the way the application works.

  • Preview doesn't show up in the capture window

When trying to capture, the video preview doesn't show up in the capture window, only the color bars. I am able to run my transport with the buttons and the key commands, so I know the Canon ZR500 is really communicating (easy setup: DV-NTSC), via firewire. My scratch disk is a G-Raid hooked up through the firwire 800 input. The crazy thing is, it worked only one time. I've wasted one whole day and this morning, restarting, rebooting, unplugging, different tapes, etc. Next step is takew my entire setup to the so-called Genius Bart and see if Apple's Geniuses know anything about Apple software. Frustrating as ****. I will never buy Apple again.

Careful about editorializing. There are lots & lots of Mac users who are successfully capturing from Canon camcorders. I am one of them, and have never had a problem. So there is something in your setup that needs to be uncovered, it's not FCE or Canon per se.
One observation, you have a small hard drive (100GB) and even though you appear to have 59GB free, that's actually not a lot of space. One hour of DV consumes about 13GB and during capture the Mac temporarily needs nearly 2x that space, which means your system is using the 'inner' cylinders of the hard drive, where performance slows down; this could explain your dropped frames problem. Can you move some stuff off your system HD onto your G-RAID (say, your iPhoto and iTunes libraries if you are using those apps, they often take a lot of disk space)?

  • No Capture window

I have my Canon HV20 connected properly, but when I click on Capture on FCE 4.0, I am simply asked to name the file but I don't see the Capture window that is supposed to open, as all the tutorials show, including on this Adobe site and Lynda. I therefore can't pilot the camera from FCE and capture from my HD tape.
I must add that I have chosen HD in Easy Setup and Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50, as I am in France and presumably recording in PAL.
If I name the file as asked to, a capture does seem to start, but in a simple window that offers no interface to pilot the tape or create an entry point, etc. The capture lasts only a few seconds, and then I get an odd message saying "Encountered end of tape"... when I am clearly not at the end of the tape.
Please help! I saw somewhere that people capture in iMovie and then import the files in FCE, but I can't imagine that this is the only solution...

OK, I follow the instructions, but I'm unable to capture more than 10 seconds or so. And that's only when I start playing the video on the camcorder before I click on 'Capture' in FCE. Then, very quickly, I get this same message: "encountered end of tape", but it's not the end of the tape, far from it. What could be triggering that 'end'? I do capture 10 seconds or so, using this procedure, but that's clearly not enough...
So I tried something else: I decided not to start the playback on the camcorder and to let FCE manage that. So I clicked 'Capture' in the FCE File menu, and then was prompted to name the capture, and then I saw the camcorder start it's playback, but NO view of what is being captured shown in FCE, only a black window, with this at the bottom: "CUEING TAPE, press esc. to stop". Meanwhile, the video is playing on fine on the camcorder screen. At the end of the tape, close to 60 minutes later, nothing has been captured whatsoever. No trace of the file that I had named after clicking on 'Capture'. No capture at all, in effect.
So this is where I stand and I do hope you can help. Very grateful in advance.

  • Why is there no capture window when I capture?

I just started learning FCE today and am going through Apple's online tutorials. When I go to File->Capture, it automatically starts capturing. I don't get a capture window with options that the online tutorial talks about.

I use a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and I'm capturing HDV footage from a miniDV tape. I'm using Final Cut Express 4 and capturing in "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60"
Help me understand please. Thank you!

HDV has a more limited capture window without the controls of the DV capture window. You can read about it in the FCE manual.

  • Capture Window difference between DV and HDV

I have recently changed video cameras.
I was using a JVC standard def camera and used DV-PAL in easy set up. The capture window was as per the manual (timecodes, reel, device status and controls). All was hunky dory.
I am now using a Sony HDR-HD7e and in easy set up have chosen HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50. It captures fine but there is no device control, timecodes, reel selection etc which were pretty handy things to have... is this normal?
Is it worthwhile or problematic to use Imovie 6 or 8 to capture and then place the Imovie clips in the FCE project?
All praise to the providers of answers in this forum as they have helped me no end in attempting to master FCE.

Many Thanks too Ian and Al.
I suppose if i can afford a HD camera i can afford a nice big hard drive to capture entire tapes with and forget fiddling about capturing little bits here and there.
Thanks for the ACHDV capture info, i will need to use some footage in that form soon enough.
    all the best

  • "Unable to capture window image"

if I select a window to be screenshot, I get this error:
Your screen shot can’t be saved.
    Unable to capture window image.
    (shortcut: cmd-shift-4 and then space)
It seems to be new in Lion. Never had that problem before. And regular screenshots seem to work fine (cmd-shift-3).
Thanks for any help! ~ Kai

    Thanks Davide ...
I created com.apple.screencapture.plist with Terminal and restarted the Mac.
The first couple of window screenshots worked on a Chrome browser window (command-shift-4, then space bar). But it did not work on other app's windows (Finder, Carousel).
Then I switched back to Chrome and I didn't work there too anymore. Crazy thing is that now it works on Finder windows. Very very strange.
All this is only true for capturing a whole window content (command-shift-4, then space bar)

  • Is it possible to resize the log and capture window?

    Hi,
Using Final cut pro, I would like to make my capture window a bit bigger while capturing. I am capturing footage via my Blackmagic Infinity card and get the input through an HDMI cable. I'm capturing in Apple Pro ress on 720p, 59,59 fps.
For a good overview of what I'm capturing at the moment, I would love to have a bigger capture window. For all I know, FC pro doesn't support the resizing of the log and capture window. Anyone an idea on how to solve this?
    Thank you.

In my case, the capture window is adjustable if I am capturing SD (DVCAM) video. I can also use the scopes in this case. (Good if you are recording to disk, or using a laptop for monitoring.)
However, both features (adjustable capture window and scopes) are not available if capturing HD (HDV in my case) video.

  • SCCM 2012 R2: Build and Capture - Windows 8.1 prompting for network

I have upgraded my SCCM 2012 SP1 (CU2) to SCCM 2012 R2 and I am attempting to Build and Capture Windows 8.1 Enterprise. Everything is perfect except for the OS prompting for a network selection during the process, if I click "next" on that screen

Is this a bug from my upgrade?

    Hi LillonelC
Can you point out how and where to do this?
When capturing with MDT 2013 on VMware I do not see this, naturaly, since the "machine" only has one network adapter.
But when deploying to a Laptop I get the wireless Setup screen...
    On beforehand Thank You!
    With kind regards
We aren't using MDT but what we did was create a package called Windows 8.1 - Compnents. In it  placed a file named "32Bit-Unattend.xml" and 1 named "64Bit-Unattend.xml".
During the capture in the "Apply Operating System Image" I put a check in the box "Use an unattended or Sysprep answer file for a custom installation". The package was Windows 8.1 - Compnents the File name was "32Bit-Unattend.xml".
I did the same for 64-bit and used the 64-bit version.
Here is content of the 32-bit file:

If that doesn't help I can try to clarify it a bit further.

  • What is the size of capture window for MX440-VTD8X?

I am trying to figure out how best to resize video I have captured with my MX440-VTD8X. For the application I am using (AVISynth) I need to calculate the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio), for this I need to know the size of the capture window for my video capture card.
I think that this card uses a Philps SAA-7114H, although I cannot be certain as MSI don't seem to publish this fact anywhere. (I found a few references to the 7114 via Google so that is the best lead I have had so far).
Anyway, even if I knew it used a 7114H that doesn't much help as I can't find any published data that tells me what the capture window (in microseconds) is for this card. The WDM driver might modify the window so how, so I can't just look it up in the datasheet for the 7114H.
I am looking for figures for the capture window for both PAL and NTSC,
    could someone please help?
    many thanks,
    Kevin

To quote from the article I have been using which gives step-by-step instructions on how to calculate to aspect ratio ..
(Pixel Aspect Ratio, Source Aspect Ratio and Target Aspect Ratio)
"To determine your source PAR, you first have to know what the aspect ratio of the capture window of your capture device is. This capture window is fixed, but again it is rarely exactly 4:3. The device always digitizes the same area of your video and resizes it to the size you set in your capture application. The raw captured height is always 480 lines for NTSC and 576 for PAL. The width of the capture window has to be determined. A table with known values (and a more elaborate explanation) can be found in section 5.4. A method for determining this value yourself can be found in chapter 11.
Once you know the capture window width, the Image Aspect Ratio of your device can be calculated as:
    PAL IAR = (4 / 3) * ([window width in µs] / 52.0 µs) / (576/576)
    NTSC IAR = (4 / 3) * ([window width in µs] / 52.6555 µs) / (480/486) "
The 'window width' is given for some capture cards in the guide, but unfortunately not the MSI one I am using, and the 'window width' does vary from one type of capture card to another.
Without this information I am at a brick wall. There is a method to determine the window by using a PAL DVD player as the source video, playing some test image, the problem is that I only have an NTSC DVD player so I can't use that technique,
this is something that the manufacturer must know, but unfortunately they rarely publish it,
    Kevin

  • Capture window always uses the wrong name-

Hello everyone, I'm having this problem… when I go to capture HDV footage the Capture Window always remembers the name of the LAST clip I captured, when I change it and do all my capturing I find out that all my clips (and with HDV that can be a lot) have still retained the wrong name (in the browser and on my scratch disk). I tried trashing preferences and it works for the first time and goes back to this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes i did read your post. And please do not write in capital letters, that is considered shouting.
But there are people that want to use the capture window for the wrong reasons. Hence my explanation.
Hold shift+alt while opening Premiere that resets some features.
    See if that will help.
Bob: the capture window is under File and Window. Shortcut is F5.

  • Closing the Capture window crashes Premiere

    Hi,
I'm attempting to capture video from a Sony DHR-FX1. The capture window doesn't show the video as it plays, but it appears to record it; when I stop and save the clip, the saved video appears in the Library window with a visible thumbnail of the video. As soon as I close the capture window, Premiere suddenly shuts down.
    The settings in Premiere:
    HDV 1080i30 (60)
    29.97
    1440x1080 (1.33 anamorphic)
    16x9
    48kHz 16 bit
The computer is a MacPro Tower with OSX Snow Leopard and I'm running version CS5.5.
    Thanks much,
    --Chaz

My version of OSX is 10.6.2
I purchased the Master Collection just this week so this is my first time using CS5.5 (and on a Mac no less). I downloaded the latest updates for Premiere [5.5.2] and there was a small improvement. Which now means the program doesn't crash immediately after closing the capture window, though it does eventually. I'm wondering if the crash when closing the capture may have been a coinidence before anyway.
There was a small delay before my latest crash which gave me enough time to save a short 5-sec test snippet. The footage was still in the file when I restarted so we're headed in the right direction. I'm attempting to record the entire tape at once to see if I can manage to save that with the same results.
