FCE crashed. Project gone!

Spent 22 hours on a project and regularly saved. Added a M4p sound file and when I tried to render an information bar flashed up and I couldn't get rid of it. Had no option but to force quit. Now my project has vanished. Please help.....

Before you start editing again, make sure you convert any non-standard audio or video files PRIOR to importing them into FCE. .m4p is not a format that works with FCE or FCP. Convert audio files to AIFF format at 48khz, 16 bit.

Sudden FCE Crashes

I'm about twelve minutes into a 20 minute video. I'm working on a Macbook Pro with source files on an external G Force Firewire 800 drive. The video is mostly narration, simple stills, and text. Everything is going fine and then out of the blue as I'm dragging an element out of a bin from the browser in the monitor of my MacBook Pro to my second monitor and into the timeline - FCE crashes. This continues to occur even after a restart. I open the file and it appears to be OK.
The only work around I've found so far is to keep the browser and timeline in the monitor of the MacBook Pro - rather than dragging the element from one monitor to another. I had been dragging from one monitor to another for months on other projects and for days now on this project with no problem.
I looked through the crash report but couldn't make any sense of it.
Any suggestions what might be doing this and how to fix it?

FCE crashes when I export

Everytime I export to a quicktime movie, FCE crashes. I can export short movies sometimes but anything over 12 min or so causes it to "unexpectedly quit". I have tried trashing prefs, repairing permissions with no luck. Could a drive be at fault? Disk utility says its ok... but it could be wrong.

You know...I may have solved my own problem. I found out that I was creating too many scratch disk folders (capture scratch, render files, audio render and the like) I was creating a new set of these with each project.
I deleted all but one that I will use for all my future projects.
After trashing the prefes, I was able to export a movie. I guess I was confusing the heck out of final cut.

Final Cut Express FCE Crashes when exporting to Quicktime or Quicktime conversion!
This started completely out of the blue last night. The export gets about 30-50% done and FCE disappears from the screen and the "FCE quit unexpectedly" message pops up. This has never happened before and I was doing exports of this very project all week. All other projects won't expect, the current project won't export when brought into a new file, I tried reinstalling FCE, and I deleted the pref files spoken about in the forum.
Any Ideas!!!????

Try repairing permissions and re-boot.

FCE crashes on iMovie import

I have some iMovie HD 5 projects that I'd like to convert to FCE, but FCE crashes ("quits unexpectedly") when it tries to open most iMovie projects.
I now have iMovie 6 - is that the problem?
None of the projects contain iTMS music.
I did manage to open one very small iMovie project, but when it opened, it was empty!

Try to empty the hard drive or might need more Ram. Usually when hard drives has little space FCE or iMovie wont open cause enough space to moves files. Its always best to use an external hard drive.

FCE crashing

Every time I try to open one of my FCE 4 projects it always crashes and says FCE closed unexpectedly. Other projects work but I'm wondering why this one doesn't and if it is possible for it to work?

Since FCE seems to be working fine with everything except that particular project, it's possible that some of the media or renders associated with that project have become corrupt. Try opening a recent backup copy or Autosave version of the project. If it still crashes, then I'd try trashing the renders for that project to see if they're the cause. If it still crashes after that, I'd suspect corrupt media.

FCE crashes with canvas playback

I installed FCE 3.5 by bypassing the installation check and everything is fine until I choose canvas playback and FCE crashes evey time. (audio meters are active) In the system settings audio capture is dimmed. There is also an audio plug in that is 'not supported'(HAL-DVCPROHD) Any suggestions?

Full computer hardware specification would be

Perhaps you didn't hack the installation file
correctly.
Perhaps the unrecognized audio software is not
compatible.
I'm sure I followed hack instructions carefully, everything was fine except for the no audio part. I've tried re-installing and trashing pref. files and cache. I think it must be the HAL plug-in, which I've looked at and can't see anything that I could change.
Am I destined to buy a new mac?

FCE crashes after validating audio data

I have just started using FCE and I'm having a problem with it craahing. I am capturing from a DV tape that was recorded in 12bit audio. I got the audio synch warning message a few times and, after reading the manual, realized that I needed to change the NTSC setting in Easy Setup to NTSC 32kHz for 12 bit audio, which I did.
I used the Capture Now button and pressd the Esc key to stop the capture. If the clip I capture is several minutes long I get a small window titled "Analyzing DV Audio" and the text in the window says "Validating Audio Data". This window remains in view for a minute or more and then FCE crashes. I have tried this several times and get the same result. I tried repairing permissions and rebooting and still it crashes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion. I trashed all the prefs and tried capturing the same footage again and experienced another crash. I then moved to another section of the tape and tried again and it worked without crashing. I also captured footage from another tape without a problem. I suspect that particular section of tape is somehow corrupted and was causing the crash. I was able to take this section of tape into iMovie without a problem. I guess I'll bring it into FCE from iMovie.

FCE crashes when export using Quick Time

Hi All,
When I select "Export - Using Quick Time Conversion", FCE crashes. I tried to repair permissions and rebooted but it did not help.
Export using QT was working fine last week. I did some maintenance checks with Onyx over the weekend. Could it be the problem.
Any suggestions for fix?

FCE Scratch Disk is an external 500GB drive (it has always been and it's been working fine the last 1.5 years) External drive is connected via FW800.
In Final Cut, I use HDV1440X1080 1080i. Please let me know if you need any other settings.

FCE crashes when import Live Type Files

FCE crashes everytime I try and import a Live Type file. It even asks if I want to report a bug to apple. I have tried reinstalling both Live type and FCE with no luck. Any other ideas? Has anyone had this problem?

FCE 3 Project in FCP 5

That's it. Can my buddy, using FCP 5 open my FCE 3 project? If so, will anything be "lost" in the translation?

i forgot to mention that you should make a copy of the fcp3 project first, and upgrade from this copy, ....if there are problems going to fcp5 you can always go back to fcp3 with the original file
my fcp3 projects had been in OS9 and some of the project names had backslashes, i had to remove the backslashes before going to OSx,
you probably know that OSx, a unix system, will not treat files well with backslashes in the name.

FCE crashes during Quicktime Export

FCE consistently crashes when exporting clip as Quicktime Movie. I am new to FCE.
When performing this Workflow (below), if I do NOT add the Zoom keyframes the clip exports fine.
This is the Workflow that causes the consistent crash of FCE.
Workflow
1. Set up as DV-NTSC
2. Import DV clip
3. double click clip in browser to add to Viewer
4. Click motion tab on Viewer
5. Add two KeyFrames
6. Set first Keyframe to 100% Zoom - set second Keyframe to 300% Zoom
7. Scrub Zoom profile in Viewer - looks fine
8, Drag dv clip from Viewer to Canvas
9. Scrub clip in timeline - looks good - zooms correctly
10. Select clip in timeline & select Sequence > "Render All" (it only comments on the audio)
11. File > Export > Quicktime Movie (self Contained or not - still crashes)
12. FCE crashes every time
I've added all Updates (though I cannot find an update for 3.5.1)
I've used StreamClip to alter the compression settings of the dv clip - no success.
I've deleted prefs & User Data folder.
Is there something more that I should be doing prior to attempting to export?

Large compound clip crashes project at every start

hey guys,
i've been working on a 90min project on my mountain lion mbp late 2011 (fcpx 10.0.5) but since a few days ago, it crashes as soon as a try to open the project.
reading from some posts here, one of my last actions before the first crash (making the "main" video a compound clip for clarity reasons) might be the cause of the constant crash at startup.
i really need to finish this project asap (2 months of work). fcpx starts and works perfect when i remove the crashing project to a new folder, but of course it's missing then in the programm.
i tried double-clicking the backup-file but that crashes fcpx, too. (the backup might be after the point when i joined the clips to one big compound clip)
any help & ideas would be greatly appreciated.

okay ... so here's an update ...
thx to some advice i got i let my mbp fight with the beachball for almost 13h (!!!) ... et voila ... the project was open ....
BUT (and that's a j-lo type butt) ... my 1st action was trying to convert the 90 min compound clip that seemed to cause the problem back to it's original files. it is not yet finished, so i could not just export the project (which of course would have been the "safe way").
now guess what ... simply by trying to select (= highlight) the big compound clip to achieve this, i GET THE BEACHBALL AGAIN !!! ... :-/
the activity monitor says my cpu is runnin' at 100% on fcpx and the memory at 3,43 gb ...
task manager says "fcpx doesn't react" and the beachball keeps rollin' and rollin' (4 about 20 min now) ...
do you guys think it'll recover if i keep runnin' it like that overnight again or is there another way of converting the compound clip without selecting it?

FCE crashes when importing from camera

I'm using FCE 2.0.3 and a Panasonic NV-GS300 camcorder. I've installed the program with the camera on and connected (as recommended by Apple).
No matter what 'easy settings' (or otherwise) FCE crashes before importing anything.
The camera isn't included in the Apple list of supported camcorders- does this mean it will never be possible to use this camera with FCE?
Importing into iMovie works fine. But I'm trying to avoid going through iMovie then into FCE.
Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Opening FCE 4 project in FCP 7? Is it possible?

Hi All
I am on the verge of buying FCE 4 to rough-cut a doc project that will likely end up being finished on FCP. Budget is tight at the moment and my current 'field' machine is too slow to run FCP 7 properly.
I know that FCE cannot export an edit decision list, but that FCE 4 projects can be opened in FCP 6, according to Tom Wolsky (see http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/995580).
I assumed that FCE 4 projects could thus be opened in FCP 7 -- but this website http://www.answers.com/topic/final-cut-pro says that FCE 4 is NOT compatible with FCP 7.
Can anyone advise on this? Is it possible to rough-cut a project in Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE 4 and then open this project in FCP 7, re-import footage as ProRes, and finish?

I've split this question into two parts:
A) I'm not entirely sure what the implications of FCE 4 losing 'all timecode' when converting (in this case AVCCAM .mts) files to AIC on import are. Apparently the original timecode is still there -- it's just not visible unless you use a filter like FCE Timecode Display (http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/TimecodeDisplay.html).
I'm on a steep learning curve here, so please excuse me if I sound a bit dumb, but does the fact that AIC 'loses timecode' mean that if I open an FCE 4 project file in FCP 7 and try to re-capture media (and convert to ProRes while recapturing) from my original AVCCAM files using FCP 7, that FCP 7 will not know where to find the clips to re-capture?
B) I'm also not sure what you mean by capturing media as DV anamorphic downconverted to retain timecode. Presumably this does not apply to AVCHD footage, as you have indicated elsewhere in this forum (and chapter 16 of the FCE users manual says) that the only transcode (ingest) option with FCE is to convert AVCHD footage (including AVCCAM footage) to full-size AIC? Please clarify.

KNOWN PROBLEM BUT NO SOLVING: FCE CRASHES ON QUICKTIME CONVERSION EXPORT

Hi to all,
i'm an italian new user. I already use FCP on my Mac Pro 2007,and i purchased FCE for my new MacBook 2008 3GB Ram.
I use Snow Leopard for both machines. FCE is installed only on MacBook. The issue is:
When i put ANYTHING on timeline (effect,clips of ALL formatsetc) indipendently from Sequence presets,FINALCUT EXPRESS CRASHES IMMEDIATLY WHEN I TRY TO EXPORT TO "QUICKTIME CONVERSION". No messages,no report,nothing.
I searched and read many pages of this forum,i found a similar thread where the suggestions were the erase of preferences in Libray and reinstalling. I DID THAT but FCE crashes again.
I'd like to resolve the problem on this machine,because i will use FCE on this computer.

This is an excellent tip. I really learnt something I wasn't aware of. FCE always seemed to render anyway but it takes longer if you did not render first. But you are right. The manual mentions it as well.
Anyway, it does not explain really why, with Quicktime X installed, I and others experience FCE crashes. Before with Leopard , FCE really never crashed.
Contrary to what I mentioned, I still experience crashes, also after full rendering. Strangely enough, it does not happen all the time. It seems difficult to reproduce the circumstances when FCE crashes on export. Any suggestions?
