FCE doesn't recognizing my HV30 camcorder

So why doesn't FCE find my HV30 camcorder while iMovie has no problem?
I thought FCE was a step up? The Canon software (yes I updated to the latest) doesn't find it either.
I find this quite odd and don't want to have to import into iMovie and then import into FCE. Seems a bit backward.
Any tips?

  • FCE won't recognize my sony camcorder....

I have a 27" imac running on OSX 10.6.4. I'm trying to connect my sony dcr-hc46 to it via a firewire cable. so far my computer, or FCE has yet to recognize a device connected. I am going from a four pin connection from the cradle of the camera to a 9-pin connection in the back of the computer. Is the camera just not supported? Is my cable bad? Is the port shot? How do I troubleshoot, or get this thing to work?!!!! Any help would be appreciated. Nobody at sony or apple has been able to help.

    Hi
Turn on and connect Camera in VCR/Play mode - Then first start FinalCut.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)

    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.

    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Connecting a Canon HV30 camcorder vai a thunderbolt port to a new imac

    Hi all
I was using imovie 11 with my old imac (purchased Summer 2008) using the firewire connection to transfer DV/HDV video from my Canon HV30 camcorder (tape). I just bought a new 27 inch imac with the thunderbolt ports and now I am stuck as there is no firewire
The camcorder had  a 4 pin firewire output so I have tried the following
Used the original camcorder cable (Firewire 400), converted to firewire 800 with an adapter and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter
Used a cable that converted the 4 pin firewire to firewire 800 and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter.
In each case, imovie is not seeing the camcorder.
I know that my camcorder is not listed as being supported by imovie but has worked fawlessly on my old machine running the same software and operation system (Mountain Lion)
    Any ideas - thanks
    Kevin

    Hi epjustin,
What I said in the previous post (Oct 9 2013) works for me but I can try to explain in more detail if that helps.
Firstly. remove the battery or the ac power connection from the camcorder. - VERY IMPORTANT
Turn on the Imac and login
Attach a thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter to the IMac thunderbolt port - you can get this from the Apple Store
Now attach a firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter to the the end of the previous adapter. You should now have the appropriate firewire 400 connection so that you can attach the original firewire cable that came with the camcorder.
Now connect the camcorder cable to complete the connection between the camcorder and the computer
Now connect the power supply or the battery to the camcorder and turn on the camcorder. Set the camcorder up so that it exports through the cable as normal
You should now be able to detect the camcorder in imovie. If you can't see the camcorder in imovie, go into system report from about this mac and you should see an entry in the thunderbolt section relating to the connected camera.
As I mentioned above, turn on and disconnect the power from the camcorder before disconnecting the camcorder from the Imac or turning off the Imac
If you can't get things to work, you may want to try connecting the camcorder to another computer as there is a chance that the board is fried if it doesn't work
Please let me know if you need any further help

  • FCE doesn't recognize my HV 20

I have a new Canon HV 20 and FCE doesn't want to drive it.
I tried to capture with iMovie 8 and I worked.
What's wrong with my camcorder ?

Hi, I am also using a Canon HV20 and have figured out how to capture HDV with it. A couple of things that I learned:
1 - The "easy setup" on FCE needs to match the "playback" setting on the camera
2 - I need to follow the directions in the HV20's manual: First turn camera on to "play", then connect Firewire cable to computer, lastly open the application. It recognizes the camera every time, but since there doesn't seem to be any ability to control the deck through the computer, I rewind the tape to the place that I want capture to begin before going through that sequence of steps.
3 - my screen saver coming on during capture was causing the application to "freeze" and capture to cease. So I set screen saver to "never" and haven't had any problems.
    Hope this helps.....

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

why mac 10.8.2 doesn't recognized yahoo messenger?

If it's the Yahoo Messenger app that doesn't work for you, then consider downloading and using the Adium app.
The Adium UI is somewhat cryptic, but the tool does work with Yahoo IM and a whole bunch of other ways that are commonly used to chat.
But yes, more details on the errors or problems or dialog boxes or messages are needed, if there's something going wrong with Yahoo Messenger app.

How can I transfer my pictures off an old iPod touch to my new computer if it doesn't recognized the device??

    - Does the iPod work?
    - If you have a PC, it just has to appear in My Computer to get pohtos saved to the iPod. Those are in iPod's Saved Photos) album into a computer
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
    - If the photos were synced to the computer you need a third-party program like TouchCopy or Phone view to get to to a computer.

  • FCE Doesn't Recognize My New Cam

Final Cut Express doesn't recognize my new video camera that I just plugged into the computer. Is there a thing I'm supposed to do within FCE to make the camera recognized? Thanks.

You should specify, what camcorder you try to connect. If it is tape based then there should not be any problem, but with AVCHD you can expect difficulties. If it a new Panasonic HDC-SD9 for example then it is practically incompatible with any editing video software. I checked iMovie08, FCE 4 on Intel Mac and Sony Vegas on Windows machine. All programs crashed on import attempt.
BTW, did anyone find solution for SD9 problem except Voltaic conversion? I searched over internet and did not find even single case of successful direct HDC-SD9 files import.
And no, I do not have Perian installed on my Mac.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • My imac doesn't recognize my HV30

Just bought a canon HV30 and Final Cut Express. When I connect the HV30 via firewire to my imac and turn to play nothing happens. It is only recognized if imovie is running.
Is there a setting that I'm missing.
I also have the same problem with my Powershot G7. My imac will only recognize it when iphoto is running, but I by-passed that problem with a card reader.

Change your Easy Setup to an _HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec_ that matches the cameras output.
    Restart FCE.

I've used FCE for a while now.  A couple years ago I switched to an HD camcorder and have imported via log and transfer no problem.  But I am plugging in my old camera to view some old DV tapes, and I can't get FCE to recognize the camera.  Any help on what to check?

  • If your Mac doesn't see your firewire camcorder, you might give this a try

If this issue has been resolved, please accept my apology.
The first time and ONLY the first time I connected my Sony DCR-TRV17 camcorder to the firewire port on my Leopard MacBook (Oct 2008 I think), iMovie recognized it. After that time, the MacBook never recognized it again. After lots of fooling around I gave up and just imported the tapes into my eight year old iMac running Tiger, saved them to an external hard drive and connected that to the MacBook.
A few weeks ago I was thinking about the problem again and an idea came to me… what if I play the camcorder tapes on the TV screen and send the A/V outputs back to the laptop? I did some searching and found a device that transmits analog signals through a USB connector. I bought an iGrabber on Amazon for $35 and it works… no need to connect the camcorder to the Mac… you connect it to the TV! The iGrabber connects to the Mac's USB port.
    1. connect a cable from the camcorder to your TV inputs so it plays your tape on the TV screen
    2. connect the iGrabber's included A/V cable to the outputs on your TV
    3. connect the iGrabber's included USB cable to the Mac's USB port
    4. run the iGrabber app (there are settings to be configured)
    5. start playback on the camcorder and the Record function in the app
    6. I chose to capture the video to a 1TB hard drive in MPEG-4 format
When you finish capturing, open iMovie and import your video from the hard drive.

I'm having the same problem. My machine is doing 1 GB per hour. Excruciatingly slow to backup 395GB. I do have Norton Anti Virus on my machine. I will try and remove this. I don't really want to reformat my entire G5 just to be able to back it up. If anyone else can suggest other programs that might be interfering or other solutions let me know. At this rate it will be 16 days before my 395 GB is on TC. Unacceptable Apple!

  • IPhoto doesn't support my digital camcorder -- what Apple application will?

It's looking as if iPhoto doesn't support my Sony digital camcorder (DCR-TRV280). It's not listed among the Sony products it supports. I don't need it for video; just downloading still photos. But the Sony website resolutely refuses to recommend image-capture software. The ImageCapture application that also came with my Mac (OS 10.4) doesn't support my camcorder either. Is there a place where I can look up what application I can use -- perhaps another version of iPhoto or a modification to it -- to capture images off of my camcorder? A bonus would be if I didn't have to pay for it.
Thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas (including perhaps another forum to pitch this question in if no one knows?).

    Hi Chris,
Image Capture should work getting the stills over the camcorder. Use a USB cable for the connection.
