Fce Freezes

First I get a buzzing sound and then everything freezes. I have to restart computer. I am using an Imac 10.6 It seems to happen at least once an hour while editing. Any suggestions ?

Only using FCE?
This sounds like an hardware issue rather than software.
The info you can providethe better.
What is your OS, computer type, hard drives attached etc.

  • FCE Freezes while importing video

While importing video, FCE freezes, usually within 3-4 minutes of capture. I have to force quit. I am using Capture Now. I have no problem importing with iMovie. In fact I've been importing in to iMovie and then copying the clips into FCE to get around the freeze. I have my clips saved to a 500GB external drive and my camcorder is a Panasonic PVGS-300. I have imported into FCE many times before. This is the first time this has occurred and I haven't changed anything in my setup or added anything to the system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    I'm having the same problem.
Yesterday, I captured 45 minutes in 4 minute sections, and spent the morning editing.
It got slower & slower & slower.
I saved all, quit & browsed the internet for a while.
The computer continued to whir for some time.
I went back into FCE & it was back up to speed.
I suspect imminent hard drive failure.
Does anyone have an opinion on my diagnosis?

  • FCE freezing computer.

I'm using FCE 1 and DVD Studio Pro 2.
Both apps are installed on my boot volume, a hard drive on a PCI controller and my scratch disk is a hard drive on my onboard IDE-ATA socket. I save project files to the scratch disk volume.
When I try to export a sequence to MPEG-2 with Quick-Time Pro, the computer usually freezes before a sequence over 20 minutes long is finished encoding. The only thing I can do then is a hard restart.
I can export to a DV stream and use Compressor, but that makes extra work for man and machine, as well as taking longer to start up a conversion to MPEG-2 for my computer to work on while I'm at work.
At first, I was getting freezes on playback.
I had initially selected the wrong volume as a scratch disk upon installation after my last restore, so I deleted FCE and all FCE app-support, cache and preference files in both library and home/library directories and re-installed and re-serialized the software. This helped some, but it only took me to my current state of affairs.
I suspected it may be vid-card related, but I've tried using a Radeon 9000 Pro card and my current G4-modified Radeon 9600 Pro, (both eBay hardware left over from a failed Quicksilver salvage project) as well as the stock Rage 128 Pro. Same situation.
    Anything else I can try?

Processor upgrades are not supported by Apple with video editing applications.

  • FCE Freezes on playback?

When I am editing and I want to watch what I have already put together, the video freezes and the audio continues (most of the time). I do have everything rendered? It also never happens in the same spot. I also have to force quit sometimes to get it to "unfreeze"?
I work at an Apple reseller, so I brought it in here to get looked at. They "defraged" my HD and checked over stuff. They could not get it to stop doing this?? Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Also, after updating to 10.4.5 now every time that I open up FCE on my computer it asks me to enter my registration again?? (Name/org./serial #) Any ideas?

"video freezes and the audio continues"
(Same as for Matthew in a different thread...)
    Did you try Sequence/Render Only/(Audio) Mixdown ?
This solved a similar problem I had in the past. Basically it prepares a premixed audio track that prevents skips to occur.
"after updating to 10.4.5 now every time that I open up FCE on my computer it asks me to enter my registration again"
Sorry cannot halp you here: it never happened to me.

  • FCE Freezing Playback

    Hi Friends
I've been continuously troubleshooting and searching for answers, but now I have to bother you because the problem is getting worse instead of better.
I've been using iMovie 09, but I'm now working with projects too big, so I bought Final Cut Express 4 HD.
I exported the iMovie footage in FCE XML format to FCE.
If I remember correctly, for the first day, the footage seemed to work alright in FCE.
Then the playback in the viewer would start to freeze after one second. (But the footage counter kept running smoothly.)
Then the playback from the timeline began to freeze (insert joke here about being in Canada).
Now I can't playback any footage in FCE.
Instead, I get the "One or more frames were dropped during playback" error message.
    What I've tried:
I checked and RT is set to "safe".
Lowered real-time audio tracks to 2.
Deleted the only 2 plist files and one pref file I could find.
Checked for Perian (whatever that is!) and cannot find it.
I repaired permissions on the internal drive where the applications (FCE and iMovie) are located.
    It gets weirder;
I dragged FCE to the trash and emptied the trash.
    Then I re-installed FCE.
I knew something was funny when I opened the new FCE and it didn't ask for a serial number or a settings set-up.
It appears that even though I threw away FCE, it is still there and it opened.
I am trying to run FCE on my MacBook Pro 2.5, with all software updated.
I bought the biggest graphics card Apple offered with this MBP, specifically to avoid problems when editing video or graphics.
It's the GeForce 8600M GT, with 512 MB of VRAM.
At this point, FCE is completely unusable.
    Any ideas?
    Maybe a hardware problem?
    Thanks for any help.

    SOLVED!!
    (Or is it?)
    I'm not sure what happened.
Instead of exporting the iMovie footage as FCE XML, I exported it from iMovie as a DV stream and imported that into FCE.
(I feel like I had tried that before and it had not worked.)
Anyway, for some reason I tried it again, and I opened iMovie's .DV footage in FCE, and it played back perfectly!
So I was able to export edited footage from iMovie, into FCE and have it playback smoothly for editing.
The solution seems to be to export the footage from iMovie as a *DV file*, instead of as the FCE XML file that Apple recommends.
( I hope Apple gets that fixed soon, because Apple is advertising iMovie as a way to create rough cuts, and then to export it for finishing, to FCE as an FCE XML file.
That will be very frustrating to a lot of users who then put lots of time into the rough edit, only to find they cannot finish a fine edit in FCE because of whatever is buggy in the FCE XML files. )
I'm marking this thread as "solved", since I was able finally to get my footage from iMovie 09 to FCE 4, without resorting to export to camera or any other external solution.
    To recap:
If you're trying to get footage from iMovie 09 into Final Cut Express, I recommend exporting the files from iMovie 09, as .DV streams (instead of FCE XML files), and then opening those .DV files in Final Cut Express.

  • FCE freezing at point of reading project

    Hi
I have just spent may weeks working on a project that i have also backed up on different Hd's. No matter which save i open of this project it always freezes when the loading gets to the point of - Reading Project - (Preparing video for display).
All the other projects that i have worked on before are opening up as normal.
    Help please

Ok now i have tried to find one of the files only - in the FCE Browser where all the film files are i clicked on the first in the list that is not showing in the viewer. I right clicked the film file that was in one of the bins on the Browser and selected Reconnect media which took me to the window of - Reconnect Files -.
It shows there the name of the Online file that i am looking for and where it is in the HD.
I clicked the search button at the bottom and it directed me to a selection window where the file is, i clicked the option OPEN in the bottom right.
It then shows me the Reconnection window again with the box at the bottom reading -
Files Located: Amount located: 1 Amount with conflicts: 0
In the box i see the file listed with the options bottom right - cancel - connect
    I click the connect option.
Now i am back with the three windows as before (Effects, Viewer and Browser)
I double click the file that should have been found but in the viewer its just the same, it has the effect but the view is of only a green colour.

  • FCE freezes when moving between clips!  Help?

Not with all transitions, but with some, sometimes even moving between clips from the same batch of film(!) FCE will stop playing through in the timeline, sound will jerk to a halt, and I'll then see what I call the "Colorful wheel of death" as FCE tries to deal with it and stops responding, making me Force Quit, which is a Jedi ability I now have much use in, btw... I have tried to Trash Prefs but still no good, and as I am fairly new to this software, with less than a year's experience, I need help!
I have three major projects to do before year's end!
    What do I do?

First be sure you've correctly trashed your preferences. Follow the advice here: http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
Be sure everything is rendered before you playback. Be sure none of the windows (particularly Canvas) are overlapping.
Move your RT playback quality to low.
Sometimes it helps to reduce the opacity of an offending clip to 99% (via the motion tab in the viewer)before playing your sequence in the timeline. I can't explain why this works but its saved me alot.

  • Sudden spinning ball - FCE freezes

I recently upgraded from FCE 1.0 to FCEHD. I am editing my first project in FCEHD and in the middle of playing from the timeline, I get the spinning beach ball (with no warning or explanation). This started after about one week of working on this project. My system seems to be frozen and I must do a Force Quit. I have watched the ball spinning for several minutes (thinking it would stop), but it never does. This now happens EVERY time I try to edit my project and play from the timeline (sometimes after adding only one clip) My project files (as well as my scratch files) are all on a LaCie external HD. Could that be the problem?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Gail

To Repair Permissions you have to open: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, then choose your HD and click "Repair Permissions".To see your crash log, hit a search for FinalCutExpressHD.crash log to see if there is something you understand.Even better when the crash occurs and before you turn off look at Applications > Utilities > System Profiler > System log. It may turn out to be CGDrawbitmap is obsolete etc.
If you can initiate a completely new project, even a very small one, it would indicate if the problem is in the project or in FCE.

  • FCE freezes when loading project

    Hello everyone!
I have a problem when loading a final cut express project. The program freezes when its in the process of opening the file.
Here is a link to a video so you can see whats happening.
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18576059/iouiou.mov
I have tried to wait for over 8 hours to see if it would eventually start but no. It´s still just the "ball of death"
Hopefully someone have a solution for this.
    I use a 2011 27 Imac with 6 GB of ram and a i5 processor.
    Running Lion
If you need any more info just ask!
    Sincerly Henrik

The movies are .mov with H.264-MPEG4 kodec.
I think that you are right about the codec creating the problem, because only projects with this codec is freezing. I checked all my projects and those with different codecs was working fine.
I have no problem opening a new project.
Does this mean that I have to convert the movies and reedit everything or can a just convert the clips to a propper format and then reconnect them?
    Thanks for your help!
    Sincerely Henrik

  • FCE problem with Snow Leopard

I upgraded when it came out and have been have trouble ever since. I did not do the clean install, which would more than likely fix the problem but I don't want to resort to that just yet because I've got a few programs which I don't have the install disks anymore, and I've also got a big project in the works (feature film) and I don't want to risk losing anything... I know, I shouldn't have even upgraded in the middle of such a big project.
The problem is that FCE freezes up ALOT. It makes it very difficult to get a decent editing session going. It does the thing where the audio keeps going but the video freezes, and I can't stop it til it stops on its own. When I try to stop it I just get the color wheel. Sometimes it helps to restart FCE, or restart the computer but sometimes it doesn't.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard 3 days ago and it first it seemed to take care of the problem but now its at it again. I've got a brother with an identical computer (editing the same feature with me) who also upgraded from the same disc (family package) and he hasn't had a single problem.
I've talked to Apple and they recommend reinstalling FCE, then doing the clean install as a last resort. Is there anything else I can try first before going to the extreme measures? Maybe adjust my render or playback settings?
    Scott

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Reinstalling FCE is a simple way to solve a such problem, but trashing preferences files worth a try:
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
*You have to keep your project file, capture scratch, render folder* etc.
Look at this link about FCE uninstall:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38198?viewlocale=en_US
Ignore files for Soundtrack and livetype.

  • Final Cut Express (4.0.1) keeps on freezing (not responding) when i import files (pics). Have force quit 3 times already. Also rebooted Mac. Any help please?

Frustrating experience with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 today. Started a new project. Imports pics, but every now and then FCE freezes and I have to force quite. Any advice please. Thanks

CMYK is a colour system used by specialized publishing businesses so unless you have got your pictures directly from one of these sources they are unlikely to be CMYK.
If the pictures have been produced by you they are likely to be the normal RGB.
To check, ctrl click on an original picture and in the Get Info window check the colour specs.
As you can see this one is RGB.
Click image to enlarge for clarity.

  • Capture Error- Operation could not be completed as there is no video.

Hi. I'm using Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 and I seem to have a problem importing video. I successfully imported one DV tape (out of several for a film project I'm working on) using the DV-NTSC Easy Setup.
I use a Canon Optura 40 camera connected via a Fire Wire 400 cable. The cord runs straight from the camera (where it has a 4-pin connector) to the computer. As a longtime iMovie user I followed all the proper procedures - the camera is in VTR mode the tape is ready to go.
Now, Device Control says "VTR" OK and the playback controls in the program actually control the tape. Everything seems right so far. But when I click "Capture Now" in FCEHD it says, "This operation could not be completed as there is no video." What's more is that FCE freezes up (processing cursor) until I take the camera out of VTR mode.
Apple reccomends using the Fire Wire Basic Easy Setup. I've tried that. It still doesn't work.
Another curios note - iMovie seems to have the same problem, which I've never encountered until I've tried to use the camera with this computer - I'm running on a recently purchased MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz, 2 GB RAM) off of an external hard drive (G-Drive 7200 RPM 500 GB).
    I am stumped.
    Can anyone lend a hand?

So, I tried sending the camera into the FireWire 400 Port on the back of my external HD and I still got the same problem in FCE.
Here's what's really interesting - it will import into iMovie with the new setup.
Whenever my camera is in VTR mode and the Capture Screen is even just OPEN in FCE, the computer freezes until I take the camera out of VTR mode.
I'm really stumped. If I would have to install new components inside of my laptop I might just vie for loading the footage into iMovie and transferring it (if there's no loss of quality. Is there?) but I'm still hopeful for a simple solution to getting FCE to recognize the camera.
I can't really load the footage into my Mac's HD because it's not big enough. I have a video project with about 12 DV tapes of footage, and my internal HD definetely couldn't hold that.

  • Problem with aLpha channel export to quicktime

Hi! after hours of trying this here is my last hope:
I masked an imported qt-movie with chroma key a person in FCE 4. That was fine. But when I export Quicktime (million+, without compressor, etc.) there is no alphachannel anymore. I need that for the web (FLV). I f I export FLV FCE freezes at 0%.
I am shure out there is somebody who has an idea. Pleaes

Do not render the contents of the sequence. If you render, the sequence is exported using the render files. With the sequence unrendered export using the Animation codec with colors set to millions+.

  • Newly encountered capture problem

I have a frustrating capture problem that just cropped up in a system that worked close to flawlessly in the past.
    Aluminum G4 powerbook, 10.4.11, 1GB
    FCE 2.0.3
External hard drive: Mercury Elite Pro FW800 on powerbook FW800 bus
Camera: Canon ZR45 attached via FW400 on a PCMCIA card FW bus
In the past (i.e. about a year ago) this system has worked almost flawlessly (i.e. 1 hour captures from tape, no problem)
In the past few days I have tried to use this system, and everything works fine for 5 minutes (i.e. the camera is recognized, I initiate capture now, it writes a file). Then at 5 minutes, the disk starts making a rhythmic click at about 1/sec and FCE freezes capture. (image frozen on screen). The tape keeps going. If I hit "esc", nothing happens. I get the whirling rainbow of doom, and nothing I can do will allow me to escape. The disk keeps ticking, FCE keeps ignoring the esc. If I attempt force quit and to unmount the disk, I have to keep doing it over and over. FCE even after force quit returns, as does the disk even though in theory, it has been trashed. After a few minutes of continually force quitting FCE and unmounting the disk, things settle down. But none of the captured material is usable ("is not a movie file") in general.
As I said, this is the same configuration of interfaces, disks, computer and camera that I have used without hitch in the past.
Oh, I also used the disk utility to check the disk and it says it doesn't need repair.
This is very frustrating, because it took me about a year of fiddling with different disks and interfaces before I got a system that could reliably capture onto my powerbook, and now it no longer seems to work.
Does anyone have any insights? Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for your response. I checked and it is Mac OS Extended. As far as the actual drive manufacturer, I can't figure this out from anything on the case or in the About this Mac info (posted below). It is about 2 years old, and has not been used that much. I guess it depends on what "that much" means. I transfered 18 hours of DV to it over a month period, and then wrote out 18 disks worth of qt files and dvd files to another drive. When I run "verify disk" it says "passed verification".

  • Trashing QT Receipts

After upgrading QT7.3 last week, I've started experiencing Final Cut Express capture issues....capture freezes after about 5minutes and FCE freezes. The folks on the FCE discussion group suggested that I trash the QT receipts and then reinstall QT7.2. This may be a silly question, but I cannot find any QT files in the "library" folder.
    Any suggestions or advice?

    QT receipts are found here:
    Machintosh HD>Library>Receipts.
If what the FCE users recommended do not work, then in order to downgrade you will need to do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
