FCE FX plugs explained?

In the logic Pro manual, the FX plugin section is thorough. Every plugin is explained. The FCE manual seems to fall short on this issue. It details the function of some of the filter effects as examples of editing procedures, but not much else. Where can I go to learn about my FCE FX plugins?
Thanx
Boe

Here's a recent example.
I was making an opening screen in LIVE TYPE with a motion background and then had another 6 layers of motion objects that apperared and disappeared at different times. Some of the objects I chose played at full opacity and didn't give a smooth appearance of fading in and then fading out as another object was coming on.
The sceen was supposed to be similar to the big bang, but with other things happening before it and then dying out.
I discovered that there was no way to vary opacity in LIVE TYPE over the length of each layer (sort of fade in and fade out).
I realize I could export each object layer separately from live type to FCE HD and then change opacity in the time line, but the little light bulb went on and I said , hmmm maybe it's time to buy "MOTION" or some thing like it.

  • FCE HD Plug-ins for effects and transitions?

    Good Morning
does anyone know if there are any software companies out there that make plug-ins for FCE HD like there are for iMovie?
    Thanks for your help
    PG
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There are a number of companies out there that make plugins - just do a Google search for them.
In the meantime how does a hundred FREE effects, transitions and generators sound?
If you are prepared to spend a couple of hours (Broadband speed) exploring these sites you will find them:-

Though it says FCPro they all work with FCE. Each site has at least one free plugin amongst numerous commercial ones and some sites have ten or more.

  • FCE HD plug-ins available?

Does anyone know of video effects/filter plug-ins that work with FCE HD?
Specifically, I am looking for effects that were supported in Slicks plug-in's for iMovie as well as some of the native iMovie Video effects (eletricity, flash, fog, rain, etc.)
    Thanks.

  • Tom's videos FCE help!!!

Hey, I am new to the Mac world and thus new to Final Cut Express. Interested in getting one of Tom's instruction videos. I have a questions first. Is there a way within Final Cut Express to create, for lack of a better term, a JibJab type effect in a video clip. Let's just say I want to take a still shot of anyone's head and put it on the body of someone else in a video clip and have it move along with the body! Is this easily done and if so, which of your videos related to FCE would best explain this process? I have pretty much learned what I know to date free lancing through the program and while it seems completely awesome, I have to believe there are many many things I can do but am unaware of them or how to do them! Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction on how to master this software...

I recently purchased After Effects CS4 and am doing my best to learn it as quickly as possible. While a lot of compositing and keyframing can be done within FCE, programs like After Effects are the industry standard for this type of work and certainly make your life a whole lot easier.
Advantages of using After Effects for this type of work over FCE (what I've seen so far):
    • Not only can you keyframe value graphs for animations, but you can also keyframe speed graphs which gives you a lot more control over the final look of the animation.
    • Much more extensive support for keying and tracking. After Effects allows you to track a single point or a group of points and apply that data to effects or use it to replace certain images with other images.
    • Advanced control similar to Photoshop for composite modes, custom mattes, mask paths, etc.
    • Expressions and a built-in scripting language allow you to further customize and randomize your animations.
    • More control over building and animating text.
    • A keyframeable time parameter similar to FCP.
    • Ability to manipulate video and text in 3D space, and the ability to animate cameras and lights around that space.
    • Extensive support for animating vector shape layers.
I'm sure there are many more uses that I have yet to discover, but that's what appeals to me so far. You can find more information and even get a two week free-trial at http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/

  • External Audio recording to be imported & used in FCE

    Hi there,
I am thinking of using this audio interface to record some vocals. It is a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. It comes with a software called Ableton Live that can record the sound in wav or aiff format.
    http://www.focusrite.com/products/audiointerfaces/saffire_6usb
According to this spec, it uses a *24bit 96kHz a/d covertor*.
    http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR326826
    +TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:+
+2 channel USB audio & MIDI recording interface+
    *+24bit 96kHz a/d & d/a converters+*
I am using a standard defintion miniDV tape video camera and in my FCE, in the Easy setup, I have selected DV-PAL 32kHZ Amorphic.
My question is, will the sound recorded using this Focusrite Saffire audio interface be imported into FCE4 for editing together to mix together with my video clips (recorded in my standard defintion video camera) ?
    Thanks you.
    Cheers

    QUESTION 1:
I also discovered something strange when I check the settings of all the previous video & audio clips imported into FCE4. Those that imported in from video camera, the values are 16 bit 32 kHz (How come ? My video camera is set to 12 bit 32 kHz)
Despite the material is recorded in 32 bit, the capture process with 48kHz setting are allowed, but on long shot, you can expect a audio drift from video if sequence's audio is not the same as original sources.
    QUESTION 2:
Then, I look into all the audio clips I bought from iTunes & imported into FCE4, they are all listed as 16 bit 48 kHz.
The funny thing is that both these type of different clips (ie, 16bit/32kHz & 16bit/48kHz) can be rendered without problem. How come ? FCE4 can mix clips of different audio types ?
BTW, importing iTune purchased song into FCE is prohibited by iTune EUA. Any non-natively supported media can be rendered in FCE, but as explained in question 1, you can expect audio drift on long clip. This problem is not relevant with music track audio which is it not part of a video footage.
    QUESTION 3:
If I set the Ableton software output to 16bit 48 kHz, does that mean that I actually cannot make use of the hardware abilities to produce sound of 24 bit 96 kHz ? Is there much difference ?
96 kHz is used for professionnal multi-track audio editing. You have to use high-end audio monitors to ear the difference... if you can. Usually only audio engineers can ear the difference.
Audio CD use 44 kHz and the quality is pristine on hi-fi deck. 48 kHz is the standard in video production and even used in dolby 5.1 home theater configuration.
    QUESTION 4:
In the Easy Setup, I cannot find 16 bit 48 kHz. I only have the following option in the Easy Setup of FCE4:
    a) DV-PAL
    b) DV-PAL 32 kHz
    c) DV-PAL 32 kHz Anamorphic
    d) DV-PAL 32 kHz Anamorphic Basic
    e) DV-PAL 32 kHz FireWire Basic
    f) DV-PAL Anamporphic
    g) DV-PAL Anamorphic Basic
    h) DV-PAL DV Convertor
    i) DV-PAL FireWire Basic
So, which one do I chose ?
    Use DV-PAL.

  • Problems ingesting AVCHD in FCE 4.01

When I connect my Panasonic camera to FCE or plug in the SDHC memory to a USB reader, FCE 4.01 crashes in an almighty heap of errors. I am new to FCE and i had it working one time - now it abends every time.
I have tried deleting cache and prefs as Tom Wolsky suggests but to no avail. I would be really grateful for some advice and help here. The files are MTS and the camera is a Panasonic SD700 with AVCHD set (not 1920x1080p) . Many thanks to any and all

Hi the AVCHD is 1920x1080 but not "p" and the files are MTS. The setting is the highest on the camera.
The Easy Setup settings are HD, 25fps and Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50. This is the correct codec I believe. Yes I am using Log and Transfer with the SD card in a USB card reader; I could try the camera but don't think that would help
The error is Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x00000000000000b8
    Crashed Thread: 9
To both of you : Many thanks for taking the time and effort to respond I really appreciate your help

  • Quicktime Conversion Settings

Recently I tried to use Quick Time Conversion to prepare media for my blog.  I have no idea what the optimum settings should be.  For example,  The FCE manual only explains what each setting does, not what is optimum for a particular output.  I really have not idea on which setting and size to use and why?  Is there a book out there that explains how best to export your media?  Something that is perhaps a work guide.  I am coming from still photography, and I feel lost in this media.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Which export settings are the best is hard to tell...
It’s all depending on the quality or file size you would like to achieve...
Encoding a video to any media or target audience is rather an art-form than science...
There are to many possibilities and variables to choose from...
Resolution, frame-, data-rate or codec, to mention only a few...
The end-result is highly dependent on the quality of your source material...
Keep the original as uncompressed as possible until you compress for export...
Probably a good codec for web-use is H.264...
Do a few tests and see what works best for you...
Otherwise check out Ken Stone’s highly informative article:

FCE 4.0.1 won't open when I click the icon in the Dock or in the Applications icon of FCE. It had been working well but I had trouble when I trashed the reference Scratch disk to a project and I was asked to get it back. I checked all my drives through verify in Disk Utility and a couple needed repair - eventually were given the OK. I then Shut Down and rebooted, I then trashed the FCE App and reinstalled from the Install discs and , finally, I tried opening a FCE project. None of these caused the FCE App to open with Browser, Viewer, Canvas,. Time Line. All that happens is the the first FCE window, the one that says FCE registered to...and the other that says loading AE Effects, Video Effects does show but then nothing except my Desktop with it's various folders and files I also downloaded the Plug In Tom Wolsky suggested to a recent query.
All I can think of is to backup everything to HDs and take this iMac in for a service. It is only six months old - I reckon it will be poor driving by it's proud but unskilled driver!

    Don't panic . . . . . yet!
You may not have trashed FCE properly.
Deleting the application icon is useless as there are a number of files hidden elsewhere which may be corrupt.
Download this free app to uninstall FCE completely and then reinstall it.
FCS Remover - Uninstall Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Compressor, Soundtrack Pro, Color, DVD Studio Pro, LiveType, Cinema Tools
I know it is called FCS Remover but it also works for FCE.

  • FCE plug ins for different USERs

I searched for an answer but couldn't find one.
My dilemna - When I'm in the ADMIN/main user environment I have access to all my FCE 3.5HD plug-ins. When I switch to USER1 enviroment, only a few plug-ins appear. I tried to put the FCE plug-ins from the ADMIN application support into the USER1 but only have limited access to the plug-ins. Is there something that I am missing?
    Any help is appreciated.

Plugins may be set either in the central /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Express Support/Plugins, available to all users, or in each single user home/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Express User Data/Plugins, available only to that specific user.
Probably those plugins that are available only to your main admin account are in the admin private Plugins folder, while the others are in the central public folder.
    You should first verify that.

  • Can someone explain the FCE "Levels" Video Filter to me?

    Hi,
I need help with the FCE "Levels" Video Filter - I cannot find any documentation anywhere which explains precisely what this filter does and how to use it properly (Googling 'levels "input tolerance" "final cut express"' yields no results!!).
There are five sliders (Input, Input Tolerance, Gamma, Output and Output Tolerance) but playing with them, it's not obvious what they do or how they compare with the Photoshop "Levels" filter for still images.
In particular, I would like to map settings on a Photoshop "Levels" filter to settings on an FCE "Levels" Filter to achieve the exact same results in terms of adjusting the underlying images.
If this can't be done exactly, does anyone know of an FCE Filter which replicates the Photoshop Levels Filter.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

It's not a very useful filter, and is not directly comparable to the Photoshop Levels filter. There is no histogram, which I consider essential.
Input & Input Tolerance lighten the image (they work together)
    Gamma adjusts midtones
Output & Output Tolerance darken the image (they work together)
Problem is, you have to drop the sliders off their default settings to get them to work at all. Start by dropping the Input and/or Output sliders to 20. Then adjust the companion Tolerance sliders down to see the effect.
I think you'll have more luck with the Color Corrector filter, which has sliders for Whites, Mids, Blacks & Saturation. Among other things, you will find the numeric levels sliders more comparable to the PS Levels controls.

My G4 desktop won't cold start. I have to plug in to the outlet for about 15 minutes every time. Can anyone explain why? Otherwise, the desktop runs fine.
The battery is new, and I zapped the little button on the main board once. I've noticed that the power supply plug is a little longer than the usual one for G4, and the AGP slot has an extra slot, which is black and about half inch long.

    Hi Ursula,
the AGP slot has an extra slot, which is black and about half inch long.
I believe that is for ADC Monitor power if you had one, or a card with ADC, like the little tab on this one...
I think your startup problem is bad capacitors in the power supply or on the logic board, and the need to bleed off their charge before they work right to start.

  • FCE Support of Third-Party Plug-ins based on FxPlug - iSight

I wish apple would make FCE Support of Third-Party Plug-ins based on FxPlug.
I would love to be able to record to FCE with the iSight plug-in from Noise Industries....
Is there an other way to do this??? Record audio and video to a quicktime movie from my iMac???

What ever happened to plug and play, or simple english to explain the tech stuff.

plug and play. well that is a windows term.. Apple decided they didn't need uPnP on the Time Capsule because that is just so windows.. so they use there own system.. called NAT-PMP.. (port mapping protocol). Just to make sure that things like playstation, xbox, etc could not open ports properly. And windows machines of course should be excluded from playing.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAT_Port_Mapping_Protocol
"simple english".. unfortunately networking requires the use of a fair number of terms people are just unfamiliar with.
The big lie was computers and networking are easy. Computers in isolation might be fine.. but as soon as you link things in networks.. it gets much harder.. and people who do study for a couple of years just to diploma level in networking haven't done it because they are dumb and could have read the simple english manual overnight. But because it is complex.
I try and explain it this way.. if your washing machine goes bung, do you start pulling it to pieces and trying to find the fault.. or do you call the washing machine repairman.. who has trained to fix washing machines.
If your computer or networking goes bad.. then "who are you going to call?" The manufacturer and complain about how hard it is to setup a $100 piece of equipment and expect them to give two hours of hand holding for free on the phone. People would never call a computer support technician.. no this is easy.. it is in simple english somewhere.. and you only need to spend an hour and all will be fine. Even though you have as much training in networking as in washing machine repairs. Would you call the washing machine manufacturer and expect 2 hours of free phone support for you to strip down their washing machine.. after all it cost 6x times what the router cost?? Or has some strange lie grabbed hold of you that this is simple.

  • Plug-ins - cannot install in FCE HD

I have FCE HD and After Effects 6.5 (standard). I have copied several plug-in effects into the only FC plug-In folder I can find on my drives - but I cannot locate them when I open my FCE program.
I have followed the guidance I've found on these forums. Odd thing is, though I have HD, my folder for FCE is labelled "Final Cut Express" with no mention of the "HD" (I started off with Version 1.0 then upgraded). Is there some hidden "HD" folder that I have not been able to locate on my system?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
As I know plugins for after effect cannot be run under Final Cut Express (any version).
There are 2 locations where you can place plugins modules. (there is no "HD" letters in those directories).
    1) This one for all users:
    Hard disk--library--application support-final cut express--plugin
2)This one for specific user: (if you have multiple account on your mac and want to restrict access to your plugins, use this place)
    User-Home--library--application support-final cut express--plugin
