My humble apologies. Did I mention that I am new to Mac as well as FCE. I changed my e-mail in my profile. to one that should work. I have been receiving messages on the .mac address for my subscription to this forum; however I cannot send mail out from that account or apparemtly receive from anyone but Apple...I digress... that is a topic for another forum or my Apple pro.
Did I also mention my new Mac arrived just a couple of days before our baby girl. Sorry for my ignorance. The mail should go through now if not here's the address that has been working since setting up my Mac [email protected]

  • DVD from Tom Wolsky's "FCE 4 Editing Workshop" Book won't load

    Greetings:
I recently purchased FCE and Tom Wolsky's "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop" Book & DVD. When I put the DVD into my MacBook Pro, it sits for about 20 seconds, then gets ejected. The computer seems not to recognize the DVD. The DVD drive is otherwise functioning perfectly (for example, I used it to load the FCE application with no problem). I've tried restarting the computer and cleaning the (spotless) DVD. Anyone else have this problem, and can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks!

You should return the book to wherever you purchased it if the DVD is defective.

  • Media Folder on DVD from FCE HD 3.5 Editing Workshop won't copy to harddriv

I am trying to get started with the Editing Workshop book lesson 2. When I drag the Media folder that is provided with book to my hard drive it stops copying less than halfway and gives me the followig error message- The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Backstage" could not be read or written (Error code -36)
    Am I doing something wrong?
Is it a bad disc or what....?

  • NEW BOOK: "FCE  HD 3.5  Editing Workshop" - Just a bit too late for Xmas!

In case anyone hasn't heard yet, there is a new book coming out in February - "Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop" by Tom Wolsky.
UK FCE 3.5 editors can pre-order it from Amazon:-
    Tom's New Book
If it's anything like his others it will be a useful addition to anybody's library.

  • CD/DVD won't load

iMac G5 slot loading SuperDrive won't accept discs. Put a music cd in to transfer to iTunes, worked fine. Then put in a blank cd and it won't accept it. Feels like there is some sort of resistence, slides in easily but just sits there without being 'grabbed'. Won't take DVDs, CDs (blank or music), or installation discs. Ran permissions, cocktail, restarted, unplugged and restarted...still nothing. Purchased on 12/7/05 so I'm just off the 90 days -- any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I understand your intent, but this is a user-to-user help & discussion forum, one with specific rules of behavior that you agree to by posting here. One of those rules, intended to benefit everyone, is to keep on topic.
The topic here is CD/DVD's that physically won't load into the drive. This is almost certainly a mechanical problem that requires service by a technician. Teresa should know that the warranty is generally one year for parts, so she should contact Apple ASAP.
Your problem is entirely different. It is unlikely that it is caused by an innate flaw in the drive, since tens of thousands of them are in use & relatively few people report problems. Lumping all the various symptoms together helps no one since it diverts people from looking for the real cause of their particular problem -- after all, why look for any other issue if you are convinced the hardware is to blame?
Sample a few threads. You will see that people often blame Apple for problems that turn out to be caused by corruption of the OS, third party login items or drivers that are incompatible with it, user error, substandard RAM, cheap media, or other factors limited to a few users. Only by treating each set of symptoms individually can anyone help them solve their problems.
This is why the rules are as they are. Abide by them & you will find many people willing & eager to help; otherwise, you will probably find mostly people looking more for something to blame than for a solution to their problems.

  • Tom's FCE3 HD DVD vs Tom's FCE HD 3.5 Editing Workshop - Which one

I have Tom's first 2 FCE books and I like reading technical stuff and being able to refer back to sections as needed - rather than loading a DVD.  But I am wondering what others might think if they have exposure to both of these products.  I don't do a lot of editing but I am prepping for a number of projects in the coming months.
I have FCE 2 but will be upgrading and I also just upgraded to an Intel iMac.
Which would you pick - book or DVD?
    Tim

    Hi Tim.
The difference between FCE 2 and 3.5 is very little so any later books might not add a lot.
The major differences are improved Dynamic Realtime Playback (which needs no explanation) and the keyframing of effects (which does - if you don't understand keyframing). Having said that, many people go through life oblivious of keyframing!
The really big advantages you will get with FCE 3.5 are Soundtrack and LiveType.
Unfortunately, there are no FCE books describing how to use these two programs.
    Ian.

  • 2 questions from Lesson 3 in FCE HD 3.5 Editing Workshop

    1) My MacBook Pro needs a "Fn Home" keyboard shortcut to flip the play head to the beginning of a Sequence - the Book says it should just be the "Home" key:
and 2) I don't get an "out point" marker in the upper right corner of the picture in the Viewer after I set the "out point" of a subclip.
Is this normal, doctor? The Titanic only hit the tip of the iceberg, so I do worry about little things...

  • 10.4.11 upgrading to Snow Leopard - DVD won't load

    Hello fellow users,
I could use a bit of help updating my macbook from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. I have 10.4.11 and i'm updating to 10.6, Snow Leopard. I've already checked basic requirements, backed up and i'm ready to install...
I chatted with a apple specialist when I purchased the dvd for snow leopard and asked if it was what i needed to upgrade all three of my macs; 2 running 10.5.8 and one running 10.4.11. They said yes. I had no trouble updating the machines running 10.5.8.
But the one running 10.4.11 isn't so easy. The trouble is the install DVD will not boot and just shuts down the hard drives (the machine says 'restartto begin install' but when i restart the dvd spits out on restart). Does anyone know how to get the disk to install? Mounting the disk didnt work either, it allows me to begin the installation but then the machine reboots.
I'd done some research previously and was told by Apple that i needed to get the Box Set in order to upgrade my machine running 10.4.11. However according to apple's support forums (http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MC574Z/A?pqid=QH49CCDXJ9DA24K TKTDPCKYKUDDDXKHTK) the Snow Leopard upgrade should work. I just don't know if there are special steps.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

@ BDAqua > I tried your suggestion but no luck. holding opt+command just gave me a blue screen and it rebotted, pushing the disk out of the drive. Yes, the macbook has 1 gb of ram. I realize that the min req. call for 2 gb of ram so i've got an order in for another dimm to put into the machine. Thanks for your suggestions.
@ a_brody > Yes. The machine was plugged into a power source. The disk promts you to do that and i recall aspect this form other installs. Thanks for the reminder tho! ( btw your second post is like greek to me man!)
@ Kuncklesmac > You're right about Snow Leopard being an upgrade from Leopard. I'm aware of this. And yes previously i've been told by Apple that I needed the Box Set (not the family pack.  i am using the family pack for OS Snow Leopard) to upgrade my 10.4.11 mac - they never mentioned adding ram but i figured that out on my own and an apple specialist recommended it when i purchased Snow Leopard and confirmed that I coul duse the Snow Leopard to upgarde from Tiger (10.4.11). I've also read extensively (as i said above) that it isn't necessary (always) to buy the box set. Several 10.4.11 users report having upgraded using the Snow Leopard upgrade disk only (not the Box Set) without trouble on intel macs (also see the apple link i posted). So i'm just ondering how they did it and i cannot.
    Thanks fo rall yor help!

  • DVD won't load.

CD or DVD immediately ejects after being pushed into the slot drive. I tried different disks, so the disk isn't the problem. I've tried resetting the system management controller (SMC), but the problem persists.  What is the next step?
In case these are related, I'm also experiencing sluggishness on the internet and when opening applications such as Word.  I'm also experiencing loss of sensitivity in the trackpad - the clicking function doesn't always work.

according to Apple, if the SMC reset does not work, you need to take it in for diagnosis/repair, or get an external superdrive.

  • DVDs won't load

Okay, my Macbook Pro has worked fine in the past, and played many movies in my collection without problems. But now it seems to not be able to read certain DVDs in my library. When I put a DVD in, it seems to attempt to read it three times from the sounds, then it ejects, but other movies it plays fine. As far as my software is concearned, it doesn't seem like I put it in at all.
The best instance to use in this case that I've noticed is with a trilogy of movies. I bought as a retail boxed set together, so I know they are the same format (at least one would assume). When I put the first one in (Star Wars: A New Hope) it doesn't load it, but when I put the second one in (The Empire Strikes Back) it plays just as expected.
At first I was thinking it was just that DVD, but it just happened with two anime DVDs which are not related at all to Star Wars, unless by chance. When It worked with the third in the series, (on the second attempt by sound anyway) I went back to the first one, and now its working, so its not exactly an issue with the DVD and the player compatibility.
Any ideas on what is wrong (or how to tell what is wrong) and how I'd go about fixing it?

I suspect that the lense on your optical drive is simply a little dirty. If your computer is under warranty still take it to an authorised repair centre or contact Apple, who will probably replace the drive.
If it is not under warranty, then buy a DVD drive cleaning disc for a few dollars and it will probably resolve the issue.
    Cheers

  • Photoshop elements 12 dvd won't load windows 7

    Hi,
When I insert other DVD's including Canon EOS solutions DVD, they load and install without issue.  But every time I try my new PSE 12 DVD nothing happens.  Should I try to download it and then insert the serial number? Thanks!

I have the same problem after upgrading to PSE12 about a week ago.  I'm running Win7.  When I try to open the Organizer, an error message says the catalog is in use by another propbgram.  I uninstalled and deactivated PSE11, thinking the Organizers might be in conflict, rebooted, but no luck.  Any ideas?

  • Add/Edit Account page won't load! - BT Mail

    Hi there
I've recently bought my own domain name and wanted to receive my mail through an external program (e.g. Mac Mail/Outlook).  BT has sent me an error 553 message, saying I need to verify my new email through the 'add/edit accounts' page - but this page will not load!  (I've been re-visiting it now for over a week now and it's driving me up the wall!)
I wondered if anyone else had the same problem and/or knows a way around it?
    Thank you.

    Hi Geri.
See my shortcuts option 0e, however if the page doesn't load that wont help either.
Have you tried another browser, e.g. firefox, opera, Chrome or Safari ?

  • OS X 10.5 won't load TDK -R DVDs but 10.4.11 will?

I can't understand why -R TDK DVDs won't load on my Powerbook G4 (15") which is running OS X 10.5, but work perfectly on my wife's Powerbook G4 (12"), we both appear to have very similar internal superdrive's (in System Profiler under Disk Burning mine is shown as a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 and hers is shown as 845, although my Firmware revision is FAAG while hers is DMP2 but everything else seems to be the same)
Could it be a problem with OS X 10.5, as I am pretty certain these DVDs worked in my machine before I updated to Leopard?
As always any help or suggestions most welcome (as I've just been bought 100 blank DVDs as an Xmas present and it's a pain having to wire up to a disk burner to use them every time) and if it is related to installing Leopard, is there likely to be an upgrade which might resolve the problem any time soon
Wishing one and all a Merry Xmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year
My utmost thanks in advance for taking the trouble to respond
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

I would suggest trying different media in your 15"...we had the same problem, sometimes certain drives don't like certain media...

  • G5 1.8 DVD Won't Mount/Startup

    Hi folks.
My trusty (yet dead slow LOL) G5 1.8 won't load any DVDs. I am trying to install either Tiger or 10.2.7 (the startup DVD that came with it) and not a single DVD won't load, including other DVDs.
I insert it, it spins, tries tries tries, then spits it out, giving me no feedback. Tried starting up using C during reboot, and the same spit-out.
Any idea what I can do? I don't see it as a current OS issue, but more of a DVD player issue.
    Model: SONY DVD RW DW-U10A
    Revision: A43h
    Serial Number: EA48866F
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Cheers

It very likely means your DVD drive is dead. Many only last 5 years, but that's no guarantee. You can try using a lens cleaner disc (buy in a media store - often used for home CD players) but that's no guarantee unless you're lucky and it's simply a bit of dust. Will it play a CD? CDs aren't as finicky as DVDs.
With a tower model it shouldn't be too difficult to replace it yourself for US$40 or less.
In the past Pioneer drives have been a safe bet (e.g., from [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR116DBK> or [Newegg|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129023]). However, check [Jeff's January 2010 post about re-branded Pioneer drives|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10839236#10839236] that are no longer really Pioneer manufactured.

  • FCE 4, Editing Workshop (Tom's Book) Questions

    Hi Everyone:
    First off, Happy New Year
I'm new to movie creating, FCE and the lingo. I am trying to make a DVD and thought I better try to walk before I run.
Based on recommendations here, I purchased Tom's book FCE 4 Editing Workshop. At first it was easy (sorta) but now I'm getting frustrated. Not Tom's fault, just too much info all at once.
I have searched the forums for answers and have found some, but am stumped so am probably going to ask questions that have been asked before, but here goes.
    1. What is the difference between the Viewer and the Canvas. In the book it says I'll spend a lot of time in the Viewer, I get that but what is the actual reason for two screens.
    2. I'm only up to Lesson 5 (still in it) will the Timeline be explained more?
    3. Is Marking I/O on clips how I remove what I like and leave behind what I don't? Do I use clips to make manageable pieces of viewing tape?
    4. Specific lesson instructions... Page 85 Tom says to Open clip in Viewer, mark specific I/O and then drag that "clip" into a newly created Bin. How the heck do I drag the small 9 seconds of marked I/O to a folder in the browser? I feel like an idiot but I can't get just that small 9 seconds dragged over. I just keep getting the entire clip dragged into a new folder.
Sorry to be do dense and ask so many questions. I'm technical, but just can't figure this out and it's aggravating.
I appreciate the help and thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Kim Cassidy

    G'Day Kim,
    1. What is the difference between the Viewer and the Canvas. In the book it says I'll spend a lot of >time in the Viewer, I get that but what is the actual reason for two screens.
    I'll tackle this one.
The Viewer is a way to play a clip that is listed in the Browser.
The Browser does not contain any real media. That sounds crazy, right?
What is actually in the Browser are file paths to the real clips stored on your Scratch Disc. When you click on a clip in the Browser the file path to the Scratch Disc is established and the real clip plays in the Viewer.
It's like a short cut to actually going to the Scratch Disc and then playing the file in the QuickTime Player.
The Canvas and the Timeline are really the same thing displayed in different ways. It's settings are governed by the Easy Setup selected before a Sequence is started.
Think of the Viewer as a device that plays raw footage and the Canvas a device that plays edited footage.
