FCE HD Won't Import my iMovie 4.0.1 Projects

Hello everyone,
For my birthday on Sunday, I recieved the latest version of Final Cut Express HD. Having used Final Cut Pro 4 on my machine before, I knew that Final Cut software can usually open the older iMovie projects. So naturally, upgrading to FCE from iMovie, I'd want to continue work on old projects in FCE. Well, all of my project files, upon opening them in FCE, return the messages: "Unable to open project file.", and either "Insufficient content for edit." or "File error: Wrong type." Now keep in mind that some return some of these messages, some return all, and some open just perfectly.
I would appreciate it very much if someone could provide me with an answer to this issue.
Thank you,
Tim Desrochers

There may be something in the iMovie project that's prohibited in FCE, perhaps iTunes purchased music, perhaps some effect or other element, especially third party element that doesn't translate.

  • IDVD5 won't import specific iMovie into project. (Others work fine)

I'm utterly baffled. Over the course of a year I made six short iMovie films composed of a mixture of stills and video set to music. Each time I successfully used iDVD to burn DVDs for grandparents.
I'm now trying to create an omnibus edition with all six films in. I've successfully created a menu using one of the templates and can drag most of the films from finder to iDVD. But one of them just won't import. It still plays fine in iMovie, with no stray files or corruption that I can see. All settings (permissions etc) seem to be identical to the other five movies, but when I drag it across I don't get the green "+" sign indicating that I can drop it onto the menu.
I've eny tried re-importing it from a previously burned DVD using MactheRipper, converting it back to DV format using Streamclip and using that file in iMovie. Same result.
If anyone has any suggestion I'd be most grateful.
I'm using iDVD 5 and iMovie HD.

    Hi Bengt,
    Thanks for the questions.
    a. Plenty. I forget exactly how much, but I had run out once, which caused other problems, so bought an additional HD and moved everything onto that leaving my boot drive as lean as possible.
    b. Each is less than 10 minutes, so total duration well under an hour. In any case it's not when I go to add the last one that the problem occurs. And I tried a new iDVD project containing only the problematic movie and it wouldn't work even on its own.
Menu is a single opening with one link to each movie.
    c. Can't think that there's any odd formats involved, as all the movies were built up in the same way: photos from iPhoto, film clips imported from DV camera directly into iMovie. Sound track is made up of MP3s, butthen so have all the others AND I've successfully used this movie in iDVD in the past.

  • Some photos in iphoto won't import to imovie

I have 196 photos in an iphoto album and only 37 are imported to imovie. When viewing the photo info it is apparent that the ones that won't import were created by scanning color slides. These have missing information such as origination date, digitization date and all camera and exposure information.
Does imovie prevent importation because of this type of information that is missing when the colr slides were scanned?

Try opening one of the problem jpeg files in Preview, then Save As a jpeg with a different name. For some reason, certain jpegs created in 3rd party applications are not always recognised as such by some Mac software. It could be to do with how some scanners save files. Some time ago I had an issue like this - re-saving the files in Preview fixed the problem. From memory, it related to an Epson photo stitching program (for doing panoramas) - the files were saved as jpegs, but wouldn't import to iPhoto. Saving again with Preview solved it.
It's worth a try! If one works, they all should work once re-saved (quite a few to work through though).

  • IDVD won't import any iMovie project

    Hi,
For the last 2 days I've been trying to import ANY type of video file from iMovie into iDVD 7.0.3 but again and again, I get the error: "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format"
    I tried:
    - Using iMovie to Share my project with iDVD but after coding etc, iDVD gives the error: "Not a movie"
    - Using the Share -> "Media browser..." but every time iDVD gives the above error.
    - Reinstalling iMovie and iDVD with Appcleaner.
The thing is that I can still import mp4 movies but not if I make them with iMovie. And when I for ex. try to drag a iMovie project that I Shared via iMovie, I don't get a green plus when put it in the menu of the DVD...
I really need to burn this DVD,
    Please help me!

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • Why won't my video won't import into iMovie. There is a red ERROR message underneath clip.

I just imported 40 out of 43 clips of HD video from my JVC HD Everio camera into iMovie '11. It's my first time using either equipment for editing. I selected import all but only 40 of the clips successfully imported. 3 of the clips were not able to be imported but I can still play the clips fine from the import window. The clips all have red error messages underneath them. This is an issue that I've seen posted other places online but it doesn't seem to be resolved. It's very frustrating for me, I've been researching online to try to fix this for hours now. The closest I have come to a solution involved deleting extra 3rd party plugins from my quicktime folder however I don't have a folder named "Quicktime" in my Library. So I don't know what to do. Please help!

The error message appears under video clips already imported into iMovie. Like in this screenshot http://km.support.apple.com/resources/sites/APPLE/content/live/VIDEOS/0/VI57/en_ US/imovie-start-poster.jpg on my mac out of the 6 clips shown per row, only 5 of them have the word "imported" underneath them in white letters and then one of the clips has the word "error" underneath it.
I don't think it's a corrupted file because yeah I can play the three clips just fine. The page that I read that had that fix in it (deleted plugins) was here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1893021?start=0&tstart=0 The correct answer is near the bottom of the page and was posted by iphonejunky. Maybe the fix would be that simple but like I said, I can't find a folder named quicktime in my library. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what.
I don't think I have Flip4Mac installed because I never consciously installed it. I use VLC for playing most video. The clips imported are all .mov

  • Movie file won't import into iMovie

I have a digital camera that records video (Nikon Coolpix L4). It saves videos as .mov files. When I try to import them into iMovie, it gives me an unknown error. I have tried converting the .mov files into another format using MPEG Streamclip, but that also reports an error.
Any suggestions? Is this fixable or does it have something to do with my camera, not my software?

    Hi
iMovie 1 to 6 is for miniDV Cameras and connects only via FireWire.
All other material has to be concerted.
.mov - is no specific file type - just a container.
Has to be converted to streamingDV to be imported into iMovie 1 - 6.
If You try iMovie'08 it might be able to import.
Or use MPEG Streamclip. Why this doesn't work I can't figure.
May be You need to buy and install: Apple mpeg2 component - BUT NOT SURE at all.

  • Movie clip won't import into iMovie.

    Hi
Ok at the risk of sounding like a complete dumbo...
I have a JVC Everio G 30Gb Hard disc camcorder. I can't get my clip to import into iMovie. All I get is the following message...
"The file could not be imported: The file “File Name Here” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048"
Can anybody help or know some way around this?
I sorta figured that like iPhoto, where you can pretty much download from any big brand digital camera, it would be the same with iMovie.

Hi iMovieNewbie - welcome to the forum!
Many people have your ailment!! The problem is that your camera records in MPEG2 format which is really not compatible with iMovie. iMovie's native format is DV, which is designed to be a no-loss, editable format. MPEG is really just a viewing format.
There are workarounds, but they involve converting MPEG into DV, for which you will need:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    and
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack($20):

  • Sony HDR-CX160 won't import into iMovie

Hello! I am desperate for some help. I have had the Sony HDR-CX160 for over a year now. When I first got it, I remember having difficulty with iMovie reading the camera. I found a Youtube video that told you the order to hook everything in and it worked great. I was able to import my video with no problem.
I am once again having EXTREME difficulty. iMovie will absolutely no read my camera. I hook it up and it boots up iPhoto and even imported pictures off the camera. In iMovie, it shows that it reads the camera, but there is a weird error symbol next to the camera and it won't boot up the import screen no matter what I do. I'm inserting a screen shot to show what I mean.
Does anyone know what I can do? I recorded my friend's birth of her son and now I can't get the footage off my camera which is very nervewracking and stressful for me. Please help!

  • DVD Converted to MP4 But Won't Import to iMovie

I have converted a DVD to mp4, using iSkysoft. But I cannot import the mp4 into iMovie (import function won't recognize). Any ideas?

The iPod does not require a special kind of quicktime anything.
The iPod accepts MP4 video-an industry standard codec.
    Exact specs here:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • .MOV file won't import to iMovie

Hello. Quicktime player is playing it fine, and the movie I'm trying to import even shows up in Finder under the Event I'm trying to create... yet it won't show up on the clipboard. ?

    It's an mp4 file ... mp4!
There are many "flavors" of MP4/MPEG-4 files (MPEG-4 and H.264 can be in standard profiles as supported by QT or proprietary combinations of profiles not supported by like QT or DivX, Microsoft, 3ivX, XviD, etc., or simply standardized HQ profiles which are not included in QT). In addition, if the file contains extraneous tracks like a "Tween", Text, Chapter, etc. track, then iMovie '08 won't like it. So, what is the source of your file? Did you drop it into the Event folder using the Finder or use one of the application's own import/drop options? If the former, your problem could be any of the above. MP4 slideshows imported from iPhoto, for instance, are not compatible because they have a "Tween" track. If deleted or stripped from the file, the clips can be imported/edited normally.
If the file was "imported" normally, then iMovie '08 at least things the file is compatible. It could be that the file is actually compatible and the cache/thumnail data was "scrambled" during import. In this case, closing the application, deleting the folders, and then re-opening the application may fix the problem. If it doesn't, then there is a good probability the file is a properly defined profile but one not supported by QT. Some HD digital camera files suffer this problem.

  • 2.98GB .m4v File won't import into iMove 11?

I ripped a family movie off a DVD converted from a VHS tape, using Handbrake into an .m4v file and have tried twice now to import it into iMovie 11 without success.  Is there some kind of limit that would make this fail?  It starts building a .mov file in the iMove projects directory and I can see the file size increase until the very end (2 hours later) and then it gets deleted.  Ugly.  What am I doing wrong or are my expectations of iMovie too high?

So after waiting all this time, iMovie simply deleted the file the end without adding it to my event.  No error.  No joy and almost 13GB.

  • IMovie 10 won't import IOS imovie 2.0?

I have the latest version on both iPhone 5s IOS7 iMovie 2.0 - latest verison 10 on my Macbook - Mavericks.  When I go to import a movie I brought over via iTunes iMovie on Mac says only imports version 1.4 or earlier.  So Apple updates both on my phone and Mac and now I can't go from phone to Mac.  Seems very strange that the latest Mac update wasn't set to be able to update the latest IOS version.

The movie that's in the iDVD folder (of the Shared Movies folder) contains chapter information. If you imported that movie to iDVD, iDVD should have delivered chapters.
Make sure your iDVD preferences are set to accept chapters.
If nothing works, this failure of iMovie 5 to export to iDVD suggests some kind of underlying problem. I suspect something is corrupt in the video or audio content.
Try importing that made-for-iDVD movie I mentioned to a NEW iMovie 5 project. (Drag it to the Timeline of the project.) That should deliver "cleaner" video/audio. Add your chapters to THAT project, send it to iDVD. Everything might start working as it should.

  • My iPhoto videos won't import in iMovie?

I have my iPhoto library connected and everything and I open up iMovie, hoping that that popup will come up asking if I want to import iPhoto movies. It doesn't come up. But there iPhoto Videos event is on the column. I click the iPhoto Videos library and all it says is "Movies are being loaded. Currently 0% complete." Now I'm not sure if it just staying at 0 because I have lots of files or it's not going.
I also tried copying files from iPhoto onto my desktop then importing those manually into my iMovie but the files just imported out of order and Mobile Quality when all of my video files are HD quality. Help.

Please confirm that you are really running an outdated version of Tiger 10.4.9, and what version of iMovie and iPhoto?

  • My MPEG1 movies won't import into iMovie

I have two cameras. My Canon saves the movies in .AVI format and is able to import and be edited in iMovie. However, my new Sony H9 camera saves them in MPEG1 Muxed (have no idea what that means but inspector said it was that format). I can't open that one in iMovie. HELP!!! Anyone know how to get around it in anyway (either saving the movie in a different format on the camera or while it downloads from the camera onto the computer, or how to get iMovie to import them)?

I also have a sony camera and cannot use imovie unless I purchase something else to change file formats! Why would imovie not allow mpegs to be brought in? Maybe they could come up with a software update that would allow us to use their program with mpegs! I am very disappointed that I cannot use imovie unless I purchase another program.
