FCE/iDVD HELP

iDVD Problems
Two days ago I was burning DVD disks without a problem on my 21.5" Intel iMac with OS v10.6.2. All of a sudden on each try in the Multiplexing part of the BURN cycle, with about 13 minutes remaining, I get the messages: “You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click Ignore”, and, “Multiplexer Error - There was an error during formatting.”
To begin with when starting the burning sequence the program asks for a disk to be installed and a BLANK DVD is a natural.
Concerning the Multiplexing error, I went to the iDVD website and researched my problem with no positive results.
Thinking through this problem I did the following steps:
1 Recorded the program on my PowerBook 15” with OS 10.4.6 into Final Cut Express v2.0.3 and edited as necessary.
I used one “Chapter Marker” to combine two sequences.
2 Exported the project to “Quicktime v7.1.3” and checked to make sure the project worked, including the Chapter Marker, and it worked as it should.
3 I then moved that Quicktime Movie to my main computer, a 21.5” iMac using OS X v10.6.2 and again checked to make sure it still worked, including the Chapter Marker, and again it worked as it should.
4 Opened iDVD and set up for burning the same way I did two days ago.
At this time (13 minutes from completion) I got the above mentioned window messages.
Thinking that the problem was again connected to the “Chapter Marker” I went back to the FCE version and removed the “Chapter Marker” but my result was the same.
I then tried burning the project using another Theme to see if this would cure the problem but that didn’t work either.
I then tried to do the burning on the original PowerBook both with and without the “Chapter Marker,” with the same result.
Ran TechTool Deluxe and ALL areas PASSED.
Eliminated FCE Preference files and even uninstalled FCE and a fresh install.
Now, putting aside my 21.5” iMac and concentrating on my PowerBook where the process starts, I now get, when I try to put the movie into iDVD (Marquee Theme), the movie replaces the words in the Marquee and what I get in the main portion of the Marquee are two buttons, “Play Movie” and Scene Selection”
I moved the movie to my 17” Flat Screen iMac which runs OS v10.4.11. When I tried to burn the DVD on that, I got the same result as before.
I believe my whole problem is something on my PowerBook but I’m at a loss what to do next.
Sorry this is quit long but I wanted to be as complete as possible.
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

2/2/10
This morning I rerecorded my project on my 17” Flat Screen iMac, OS X 10.4.11 then editing in FCE v2.0.3. When done, I imported it into QT Player 7.1.3. When I imported it into iDVD v5.0.1 it worked as it should i.e., The name on the Marquee stayed with my “Now Showing” name and the movie went into the proper place.
I then transferred this QT project to my PowerBook (PowerBook G4 15", Mac OS X (10.4.6)) and then inserted it into iDVD v5.0.1 BUT this gave me the same result I had before i.e. the movie replaces the words in the Marquee and what I get in the main portion of the Marquee are two buttons, “Play Movie” and Scene Selection”
I upgraded the PowerBook from OS X 10.4.6 to OS X 10.4.11, reinstalled FCE v2.0.3 and QT 7.1.3. I then rerecorded my project on the PowerBook, edited in FCE and converted to QT 7.1.3. and then inserted it into iDVD v5.0.1 BUT this gave me the same result I had before i.e. the movie replaces the words in the Marquee and what I get in the main portion of the Marquee are two buttons, “Play Movie” and Scene Selection”
It works fine on my 17" flat screen but not on the PowerBook. Checking the settings on both computers they are set up the same.
Now I’m at a loss and think tomorrow I will start over by reinstalling the original OS X software, zeroing out the computer and build it up again unless someone can give me a better idea.

  • I've lost iDVD help!

    Hi,
I'm new to Macs and have recently upgraded to iLife 08 on my iMac. iDVD will now not launch at all. I tried reinstalling it and even tried to install the 06 version back with my install discs, all to no avail. I have found the following log and wondered if anyone could help me fix it.

  • 2 Questions - iDVD help and Storage -

    I have 2 questions
    1) I recently loaded iDVD 6 from and iLife disc that I purchased and cannot get
the iDVD help to open. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
    2) After creating an iDVD project I moved it to an external hard. When I tried to open it wont work because of all the pathways that point to the movie, audio and video files have changed. Is there anyway to save a DVD project so that you can open it and burn another DVD at a later date. If not it seems stupid that you have to save all movie files, audio files and picture files in thier respective pathways in order to aceess and burn another DVD at a later date. It makes it so you cannot store a DVD project and save on space by trashing those files. Any Ideas

  • Help Viewer can't handle IDVD Help URL

I am seeing the following message when I try to access iDVD Help.
Help View does not know how to handle the seclected URL.
    The selected URL is: /Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iDVD Help/iDVD Help.html
I can open the file if I go to /Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iDVD Help/iDVD Help.html and double clip on the file.
    Has anyone else seen this?

    Hi, Tony.
If you're running Mac OS X 10.4.3 as your profile indicates, update to Mac OS X 10.4.6. See the sections:
    • "Help Viewer displays a blank window."
    • "Help Viewer links do not work"
in my "Troubleshooting Help Viewer" FAQ. That should solve the problem so you don't have to disconnect your Ethernet cable to use Help Viewer.
    Good luck!

  • Rules for iMovie/FCE/iDVD

Reading through many posts seems I find some general rules of thumb not found elsewhere. Thanks in advance for all comments.
For serious video editing work and creation an external firewire HDD is needed, mainly to avoid dropped frames in either FCE or iMovie (iM). The new 20" iMac and external HDD (with 2 firewire connections, for the input device (DV camcorder or DV/SVHS deck) and to the iMac) should be able to run either FCE/iM.
I just did a 45 min project in iM with no noted dropped frames but likely would in much longer projects if I don't get the external drive?
Audio bit rate. Advice I read for iM is that without 16 bit audio the audio gets out of sync in long projects--does FCE also need 16 instead of 12? Not knowing this need, I've recorded a number of projects (with a DV deck and a DV camcorder) in 12--can I capture to the iMac/external HDD in 16 if I'm playing from a source tape that's 12?
Chapter Markers. Seems there are "Rules for Chapter Markers" that I won't repeat here but suspect they apply to both FCE/iM when used with iDVD. Do those rules apply when you use DVDStudio instead of iDVD? One rule I haven't seen yet is that one should likely not use the apply chapter markers option in iDVD as it could apply a marker that violates the "rules" and cause strange results in the DVD when played, right?
Any other rules or concerns I've missed--perhaps always max out on RAM even if its rather costly? What other basic tips or secrets should I know for editing with these products?
    Dale

"..The new 20" iMac and external HDD (with 2 firewire connections, for the input device (DV camcorder or DV/SVHS deck) and to the iMac) should be able to run either FCE/iM.."
This may not be true if you're trying to connect a Canon camcorder to the Mac at the same time as an external hard disc: Canons like to have the FireWire circuit all to themselves, and so you may need to do it in two steps with a Canon ..capture to the internal hard disc, then unplug the Canon, plug in the external disc and transfer the movie clips across to the external, and then use that for editing. This doesn't affect Sonys, which happily work with other FW devices connected to the system. I don't know about Panasonics and other brands (..I haven't tried my Panny with an external disc connected, and am in too much of a hurry at the moment to try it. Maybe later today..)
"..can I capture to the iMac/external HDD in 16 if I'm playing from a source tape that's 12?.."
No ..FireWire's a digital connection system, so what goes in at one end (..12-bit source tape..) is exactly what's captured at the other end (..iMac/external HDD in 16..)
One way to convert would be to play your source video into another camcorder through analogue (RCA) connections, with the 2nd camcorder set to record in 16-bit ..or use some other device which accepts an analogue signal IN, and provides a digital signal OUT. That'll recapture the sound in 16-bit, and it can then be transferred into your Mac in 16-bit. But the video may be degraded a little, and it's rather long-winded.
It may be that, once imported as 12-bit, GarageBand can convert 12-bit audio into 16-bit ..I don't know: I'm not that familiar with GarageBand, sorry..
Just try testing your 12-bit audio in iMovie or FCE first ..some people have no difficulties with it ..others do. (..That may depend on whether you're using only your original 12-bit audio, or if you're also trying to mix it with 16-bit audio within the movie project..)
However, note that - once again - Canons are quirky. Because of the way that their own particular internal 12-bit timing runs, Canon-shot 12-bit tapes may give the audio drifting out-of-sync a little on single clips which are longer than 20 minutes. This shouldn't be apparent on ordinary short clips, but if you've shot, say, a school play or concert as a single take on a Canon in 12-bit audio mode, the audio may slowly go out of sync after 20 mins, and would need correcting in iMovie or FCE.
Can't comment on Chapter Markers in DVD Studio vs. iDVD ..I've never had any trouble with Chapter Markers.
"..always max out on RAM.." ..more RAM usually helps; the most noticeable improvement is when jumping up from, say, 256MB to anything above that. The next jump, from 512MB to 1GB is also useful, but doesn't provide such a spectacular improvement as that first increase. More RAM generally means that your Mac has less need to swap things from RAM to "virtual memory" on your hard disc, so less "disc thrashing" as material's repeatedly swapped back and forth, and greater speed of access if you're not constantly reading to and writing from the hard disc.
Fitting a second internal disc, in Macs which can take it, and putting your movie project on that ..or on an external disc, as you suggest.. also relieves "disc thrashing" and any instances of the OS trying to get access to the hard disc at the same time as the movie program wants access.
To stop any delays in accessing an external hard disc, as soon as you've reformatted it to 'Mac OS Extended' (..using Disk Utility..) then open System Prefs, and the 'Spotlight' preference, and then click the 'Privacy' tab, and drag the external disc's icon into the big square space which is labelled "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations". That stops Spotlight indexing every video clip which you import onto the external disc, which can slow down disc access.
The cup-of-tea icon is a good thing to click on every now and again, in both iMovie and FCE. That lets you stop editing for a while, have tea and biscuits, and come back refreshed, with new ideas..!

  • FCE-iDVD check pls?

I have searched the forums, read with interest http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10663447&#10663447
I have two long FCE files (and 2 FCP) that with a little tinkering can be made to just under an hour, maybe one of them 70mins.
When I burnt some disks for a person to view them, occasionally on some transitions there was what was described to me as a 'juddering' effect... the disk is clean, the dvd player new(ish)so ia that linked directly to quality control? The excellent post from a while ago seems to suggest there wouldn't be a noticeable drop in quality... am I doing something wrong?
I have roxio toast 10 but I like idvd better... should I use roxio's conversion and then send to iDVD??
Thanks all for time and patience. Help is appreciated.

If you follow the instructions in that thread you should get the best quality possible.
If the juddering is only occurring occasionally on transitions there is probably little you can do about it.
However, exactly what transitions does it occur on? Is it on dissolves or the types such as a wipe that have a sharp edged image moving across the screen?
Sharp edges are more likely to judder because of the nature of the TV picture.
What is the original format of the video?

  • FCE - iDVD Chapter issues...

    Hi iDVD users...
I've got some school concerts edited in FCE.
Now i'm having a few chapter issues ...I've followed Ken Stone's instructions to the letter (and the posted suggestions here) and export to Quicktime, choose chapters etc, and when i open the file in QT it sees the chapters.
    iDVD preferences have chapters checked.
Disc one is 50 mins long, 6 chapters. But they don't show !
I'm really sure i'm doing all the right stuff....am I?
When i put the disc into the DVD player, i didn't even get the 'front page' from iDVD, it went straight to play.
I UN-CHECKED auto play in the first place !
I use OS 10.4.5, FCE HD 3, iDVD 6.o.1 and FWIW I have Toast 7.0.2
I'm coming under pressure from work, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it comes to it, I'll import to iMovie and do it that way, but I am loath to do that....
    cheers all...

You don't see the chapters in iDVD?
I'm really sure i'm doing all the right stuff....am I?
You are selecting only chapter markers when you export? Not all markers?
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc3.html
Finally, export using File>Export>QuickTime Movie. If the DVD is to be built on the same computer that has the media, uncheck Make Self-Contained yo create a reference movie. If you're moving the file to another machine, check Make Self-Contained. In either case from the Markers popup select Chapter Markers.

  • FCE & iDVD

i've searched the internet the last 2 days and am unable to find the anser to my problems. can anyone help?
problem 1) I created a video in FCE. 16:9. I want to export so I can upload to a website. When I try every combination of export (quicktime conversion) it comes out as 4:3 when I open it in the quicktime player. In quicktime player I can expand and it scales to 16:9. From what I understand this has to do with the format my camera shot in, not true 16:9? Anyway, I just want to be able to export to 4:3 with letterbox black on top and bottom, or a 16:9 format that looks correct. This seems impossible, unless I do a straight export from FCE but that makes a huge file. Specs listed below.
problem 2) When I take my exported file from FCE (using export > qt movie) and drop it in to iDVD everything works great. Plays on my mac fine, on my widescreen tv fine, even played on a projector fine, BUT when I put it in a DVD player hooked up to an old 4:3 tv it cut off the sides of the video. I can't seem to find any settings anywhere (iDVD or FCE) for anamorphic. It's hard for me to believe that something so basic would be overlooked. specs below. I downloaded an app called anamorphicizer, but it doesn't work with QT player 10.
Can someone tell me what in the world I am doing wrong on either of these?
Your time and responses are much appreciated!
    specs:
    iDVD 7.0.4
    FCE 4.0.1
    QT player 10.0
    Mac Book Pro on 10.6.4
    camera: Sony AVCHD HDR-CX100

    thanks for the reply.
item 1 is a video going straight to the internet. I do believe the camera I used to shoot the video could be causing part of the problem, but since it looks fine (16:9) in FCE and exports perfectly when I use export>quicktime movie, I don't understand why every combination of export under export>quicktime conversion yields a 4:3 formatted video that looks "squished together". I'm looking for a solution that will export a video in the correct format, either a 4:3 that will put on the black bars, or 16:9 like what I get from the straight export, but being able to use the QT conversion export so I can get a copy that is small in file size.
item 2 - when I give out copies of the DVD i want whoever plays them to be able to watch them like they would a store bought DVD. If it's 16:9 it's widescreen. If it's 4:3 there are black bars. I'm even willing to export a second version from FCE if that's possible that is formatted for 4:3 with black bars, and then have a second menu item in iDVD.

  • FCE DVD HELP

I posted this as an iDVD thread too, but I would appreciate more help here, too.
My problem is that I have a Canon XL2 which is supposed to have beautiful quality, and it does when I watch it on it's LCD screen and when it's plugged directly into my TV. But when I edit on Final cut express HD, export to a quicktime file and then burn it on iDVD and watch it on the same set, the picture is washed out and horribly compromised. I've tried it on the highest output settings but the picture is the same, and ontop of that, it will strech a 16x9 image to 4x3. The possibility has occurred to me that apple may not support the XL2, but they do sell it in their store. Please post any advice you have, anything will be helpful
    thanks

Well, first off, this is the FCP forum, not FCE, but we'll see what we can do.
Second, the XL2 is compatible, otherwise you wouldn't be able to capture in the first place.
Third, when you edit, it is best to watch your footage on an external NTSC monitor or TV connected to your system. Firewire from your computer to your camera, then camera to TV.
Fourth...DVD compression thru iDVD tends to wash out things a bit, but not too much...but it is compressed. How are you exporting it to iDVD? It should be exported as a Quicktime Movie, NOT Quicktime Compression...and it should be self contained and use the sequence settings.

  • QT Movie won't drop into iDVD  HELP!

Of course I'm down to the last minute again:
I've got a 540 KB QT Movie exported in full quality DV from iMovie 3.03.
Upon opening iDVD 2.1 and attempting to import or drag and drop the QT movie from my desktop, iDVD appears to do nothing and a button for my movie DOES NOT appear anywhere in my project.
7.6 G available on my hard drive right now. Can I delete the still images from iPhoto I used to make my iMovie to free up hard drive space? (Or are they still linked through some sort of database type of mechanism?)
Any speedy help is greatly appreciated!

I've got a 540 KB QT Movie exported in full quality
    DV from iMovie 3.03.
Full quality DV should run about 13 GB per hour. - That's about 3.6 MB per second.
If what you have is 540 KB, what you have is a Reference Movie and NOT a Self-Contained QuickTime movie. If you have done anything to the pictures/clips used to create this Reference Movie, it won't work.
Please verify the size of your movie.

  • Idvd help

Why won't my dvd play continuously on the idvd movie I just made? After every clip it goes back to the title menu...

    Hi
or if You want my way of saying the very same - Old Toad's description is 100% - but may be I use another word and twist to it that might be of help.
If not - just skipp it - no offence
Play all resp one chapter at a time
    Play All Button
    1. There are NO - Play All - button in any version of iDVD
    2. It can be faked in several ways
Easiest and most fault proof way is to make a doublet movie containing All and with
Chapters set to match. It will take up x2 space but is easy to understand and produce.
Cons: Tried this in iMovie’11 by Exporting out each part as a full Quality QT.mov then Importing back into new events and putting these into a new project (Play All project). Resulting DVD had Audio that was OK (as parts) - BUT the picture was very bad and standing photo were cut of in hight. So the Play All movie has to be created from same material and exactly in the same way as the individual parts + then Chapters has to be set to match.
It's said that one can put all movies into a Photo/SlideShow and this will also
give the function of a Play All button - Tested - and ONE HAS TO un-cheque - Scale pictures to TV-Safe area else it will be a black frame all around and a small picture !
    Mike Evangelist1
You might be able to get close to what you want by using a slideshow in iDVD. (It's not widely known, but you can put videos in a slideshow.) If you set the slide duration to manual, playback will pause after each movie/slide, and you can continue with the 'next' button.
    3. Using another program to do this e.g.. Roxio Toast™ where there is a Play All button option.
    Summary
    a. Making a Play All movie with same care as the individual Part movies - gives a very Good Result
    b. Using Roxio Toast™ - also an usable way to go

  • FCE iDVD Query.

    Hi Gang,
I always use iDVD for the authoring of my final DVD projects, and I'm working on my biggest and longest project at the minute. I was just wondering if any of you know what the maximum amount of video I can fit onto one normal blank DVD is?
By that I mean in "Final Cut exported movie minutes".
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

It's a two hour theatrical show i'm producing a DVD of.
For my own amusment i've produced a 50 minute documentary charting the producion of the show as a special feature on disc one, and a 30 minute "In the Wings" featurette as a special feature on disc two. Plus there's some still slideshows etc.
I was always planning on splitting the show across 2 discs (split by the shows interval) so looks like this will definitelty be the yay to do it.
Thanks for your help as always.

  • Keynote to iDvd: HELP PLEASE

I'm at the end of my wits, can someone please help?
    Keynote presentation to idvd:
when I use the share menu, it works but looks really bad. When I say it works it means that the movie stops where it should and the presenter can hit play and carry on.
How can I make it look better?
I've tried exporting to QT » iMovie » iDVDV although looking much better the movie doesn't stop at the end of a slide.

DVDs are not just video files burned to a disc; they must be authored into a proper format with playback control, menus, and scripts. iDVD makes it laughably easy to do this. But if you want the kind of control that you are used to in a slideshow presentation, then you probably have to get something like Final Cut Studio, and learn DVD Studio Pro. Fine control and ease of use or usually trade offs.
Have you ever used an actual DVD with the kind of interactivity that you are talking about? If so, then it was painstakingly authored with something like DVD Studio Pro, or Vegas, or Encore.

  • Will HD Camera FCE iDVD DVD be an improvment?

If I take footage from a Canon HD10 (just ordered) and edit in FCE (1080i) export to Quicktime then burn it in iDVD (widescreen), will my final project be of higher quality (than if I used a standard miniDV camera) when viewed on a HD 1080i televison and HD upconvert DVD player? What if it is viewed on a standard TV and DVD?
Is there a better workflow I should use?
I've been spending a lot of time reading these forums and haven't been able to come up with the answer to these questions, although I have found answers to a lot of others.
Thanks to everyone who posts...this is great stuff!

    Hi,
I did things the way you describe, using
    Sony's HVR-FX7.
When viewed from the camera connected digitaly to my HD-widescreen TV, it looked very impressive (the raw material aswell as the material send to the computer, edited and send back to tape).
Lookin at the burned version on DVD (iDVD)(standart DVD-player) was a disappointment!
Maybe my expectations where to high, but movies created with my Panasonic NV-GS 400 and burned to DVD (SD video in 16:9 mode)via iDVD looked much better on the same TV-set.
