FCE is Quitting on me...

I'm working on a 3.13 GB iMovie Project that I want to import into FCE. Every time I try to open it, FCE quits. Originally, I thought it was a memory issue, so I went to the Apple store and plunked down for some more RAM. I went from 1GB Ram to 3. I tried the file again, and the same thing happens.
To eliminate the RAM issue, I've tried to open larger (5 GB+) iMovie files into FCE, and they come in just fine. It seems to be just this one file. Is it corrupted somehow, and if it is...how do I repair it?
Any ideas?
P.S. The file was originally on an external HD. I tried moving it to the CPU's HD, and it still didn't help.

Regardless of starting new projects in FCE, which is certainly a better option, I need to understand why FCE quits unexpectedly as I try to open one of my iMovie projects. The reason is that this iMovie project is initially a VHS import that showed out of sync audio when burned to iDVD (sync is fine in iMovie itself). I'd like to test the audio sync problem from FCE, but I need a successful import into FCE first!

Capture worked perfectly before, but now causes FCE to quit.

Suddenly now, using the "Capture" command causes FCE to quit completely, without even the message "The application..." appearing.
Up until now, my setup worked fine, and I was able to capture perfectly with this setup:
OS X 10.3.4
QuickTime 6.?
Final Cut Express 2.0.3
Sony DV camera in one FireWire port,
External HD in other port (turned off)
For two years, the above setup worked perfectly and I was able to capture DV from the camera with no trouble.
I recently upgraded the system software and now I am using:
OS X 10.3.9
QuickTime 7.1.3
Final Cut Express 2.0.3
Sony DV camera in one FireWire port,
External HD in other port (turned off)
I also recently added AT&T/Yahoo DSL service, but that is on the Ethernet port so I don't see how that could affect the FireWire port or Final Cut Express. The camera and hard drive have not changed. All that has changed is upgrading to OSX 10.3.9 and upgrading QuickTime to 7.1.3. Now, when I attempt to capture, Final Cut Express simply quits without any messages at all. Any suggestions?

I think you may have lost the ability to capture because of updating your software. Try what the above link instructs, then report back.

FCE HD Quits instead of Exporting

When I attempt to "Print to Video" FCE HD instantly quits. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this?

I'm on a naff mobile internet connection at the mo so I'll be brief:
- 99% likely that getting your camera to recognise FCE will stop it quitting when you go to print to vid (How have you imported footage by the way?)

-QT7 has given a few people probs. There are various solutions (see above)
-Canon cameras on the same bus as firewire drives isn't usually good. Search here. Usually people have to capture to internal and transfer to external

FCE HD quits when opening unless I trash prefs EVERY time.

I'm running FCE HD 3.5.1 on an Intel. When opening the app, the FCE HD opening/loading window pops up... the external a/v connection window pops up... I click continue... the opening/loading window disappears and FCE quits without warning or message.
For a temporary fix, I have to delete the prefs before opening EVERY time. I've tried searching for a permanent fix, but haven't found anything that works. It's quite annoying to lose preference settings every day because of having to delete them.
Any Suggestions?

If that doesn't work you should consider reinstalling FCE but before you do you must completely uninstall as detailed here:-

FCE-HD quits when I try to export a movie

I’m trying to export a movie (Quick Time), but as soon I choose the folder where to export, FCE quits. I’ve tried to export to 2 different drives:
- The Main (Macintosh HD) OS Extended: 240 GB, 42.89 GB available
- Lacie HD OS Extended: 160 GB, 10.78 GB available
Previously, when I tried to Render All, a notice appears sayin’ that there’s not enough space available, I had to render little by little.

FCE-No quit option after quicktime export...

Hi everyone,
I've noticed that after saving a large movie as a quicktime file, that FCE does not give me the option to save and then quit. It saves the initial project fine, but I've had to force quit FCE from the dock.(maybe i don't have to?)
After this I have been fine to drag the FCE movie file to iDVD and burn away, so no probs there, but I'm curious as to why the application is still... I suppose "in use" having finished converting the file to Quicktime. (I hope this makes sense).
The only reason I've wanted to quit FCE was to ease the workload on the machine from having large apps./projects open whilst it's trying to burn.
Am I being over-cautious here?
BTW, the discussions here have been a fantastic help in my first 2 months with FCE, cheers to all contributors !!

I don't know the differences between FCE and FCP, so not sure how much help I'll be...
I can't imagine you should be having to force quit FCE after an export. Could be corrupt preferences...
search this forum or FCE forum for 'FCP Rescue'. There may/may not be a version for FCE, but it might help. There are also manual processes for this as well.
Hopefully someone else may chime in with better info.

FCE Unexpected quit upon selecting audio interface in voiceover tool

FCE runs fine. I've just installed a Tascam US-122mkII USB audio interface which is also running fine in all other programs. It outputs sounds perfectly and inputs fine from the attached external microphone.
When I go to the Voiceover tool in FCE, the US-122mkII is displayed in the dropdown list, but five seconds after I choose it, FCE quits.
I'm running the latest version of the Tascam driver and teh internets seem to agree that this driver is pretty solid. I've reinstalled the driver just in case, updated firmware, deleted preferences...and now I'm out of ideas.
Anyone got any ideas?

HDV playback in viewer causes FCE to quit

I don't know what I did, but I managed to get one successful capture without artifacts. When I try to look at them in the viewer, FCE quits. When I view them in Quicktime, it quits. Capture looked great, but playback is full of junk.
I tried everything you kind folks have suggested, but to no avail. I loaded the latest version of Quicktime, I've re-installed FCE. I've tried every concievable connection. I've trashed my prefs. I'm baffled as to why it worked once but subsequent attempts fail. Any other suggestions?

Happy new year!.
As I remember, iMovie 5 can handles HD content, and you cannot see nor capture in iMovie.
iMovie can easily "see" camcorders in general (more than FCE).
So I think your problem is more related to your camcorder settings, firewire cable or hardware configuration. Not software one.
Can you test another firewire cable ?
Please give us items properties for your captured HDV clip in FCE.
Can you open you clip file in Quicktime player and use "command-i" and "command-j" too seek for video an audio properties too ?

Importing JPEGS into FCE 'unexpect quit'!

Any ideas as to why when importing JPEGS (2mb) into FCE it 'unecpectantly quits'? Its very consistent even after dumping plist.

So the file gets into the application OK. It crashes when it goes into the sequence. What are the specs for the JPEG file? What's it say in item properties? Was it made in RGB not CMYK?

FCE 4 "quits unexpectedly" @ launch despite trying all suggestions.

I have been searching for suggestion as to what might be wrong with my FCE 4 to no avail. Despite searching for everyhting I can both here and elsewhere online, I can't fix the issue. Hoping a specific layout of the problem here might help.
Apologies up front for the long post if that's not protocol here. Just though I would cover off a lot of the questions I've seen in other threads to save everybody time...
FCE 4 has always worked fine on my machine. All of a sudden, the other day, I tried to launch it, and without any title/credit pages (in fact, without anything FCE-related displaying at all that would suggest that a launch is underway), I get the prompt: "Final Cut Express quit unexpectedly."
I have:
- Removed program using FCS Remover and re-installed (multiple attempts).
- Tried the re-install with LiveType unchecked.
- Installed Pacifist
- Attempted to remove ".plist" file and "FCE User Data" folder, but both seem to have been removed by FCS Remover, as they don't exist (and won't until I can launch the program successfully). They also don't exist in my time machine back-ups, which is wierd...
Because I am doing a complete uninstall using FCS Remover, and the issue is still happening after re-install, its almost as though FCE 4 can't be run on this computer, which I know is impossible.
Although I had not used FCE for several weeks, no maintenance had been done in the meantime, and no other issues had arisen. This seems to be random.
The one thing I did do recently was launch ONYX 2.2 for the first time on this machine, and it seemed to do a very extensive permissions fix. Got to the "cleaning" tab of that app, and decided that I didn't have time at the moment to learn the new intricacies since the older version I had been using on my OSX.4 machine, so I quit out of it.

I have followed said instructions to a tee without any success.
I proceeded to do a complete reinstall of FCE and am still encountering the same problem.
On any given project (be it video or photo slideshow) I am compelled to hit Cmd-S literally every 5 seconds.

FCE quits upon initializing capture

When I start up fce 3.5, it won't recognize my dv canon camera(don't know the model number). It worked fine before. If I continue and start up the capture anyway, fce will quit. I have it set to capture to a internal seagate 120, don't know if it's important??

FCE quiting while capturing

Hi, I'm trying to capture a tape but for some reason when click on capture Now, at the 3rd or 4th second of capturing FCE HD quits and a dialog comes up asking if I want to Close, Try Again or Report...
I've tried in an iMac OS X 10.5.6 anda Laptop 10.4.11 from a Camcorder DVX100B Panasonic.
I've used 400 and 800 firewire.
I've done this before and never had a problem. What could it be the problem?

Whenever FCE starts behaving strangely, it's wise to trash preferences. Here's the procedure:

You should also:
Check your Easy Setup in FCE. Check your Scratch Disk settings. Check your firewire cable. Check your disk space (you should have 15-20% free for good performance).

Help! FCE quits immediately!

I recently started editing a new project. FCE started quiting (with no messages or warnings) after just a few operations. Then it began quiting after every move. Now it won't load - it begins to open and then quits just about he time it has loaded everything.
The project is huge (25 hours of raw footage), but I'm trying to cull that down to 30 min or so.
I tried trashing my preferences, rebooting, but no luck. I tried reinstallling FCE HD 3.5, but the user info screen won't let me get past entering my serial number.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You say you trashed the preferences BUT did you do it properly as detailed in this article (Deleting the .plist is NOT enough):-

Also, if you intend to reinstall FCE you must first completely UNINSTALL it or you will be trying to build on corrupt files:

FCE quits on me randomly

FCE unexpectedly quits on me randomly during use. i dont know why, i meet all the requirements and have plenty of memory. can somebody please give me a direct answer or suggestion without giving me a link to another thread?

well, usually its right after i render, or right after i put some clips together. i then go to press save, because it quits frequently, but as soon as i click on file, it quits on me. i found that i have to just press command "S" every 5 seconds because sometimes it saves, and others it doesn't. i have a titanium powerbook g4, with 1mb of ram, and 74 gb of internal hard drive. any more information you want to know?
