FCE/Livetype workflow
Hi everyone. I make videos that have quite a lot of titling in them -- for a 3-minute video, there might be 4 or 5 text slides, plus a title slide and some end credits.
In terms of ease of editing -- lots of times I want to go back and fiddle with the appearance and timing of the text slides -- would you advise that I make each text item a separate LiveType project, and then import these LiveType projects one-by-one into FCE, placing them individually into the timeline? The other option is to make one LiveType project, using my rough cut video as a background and creating all of the titles in one LiveType project (with big gaps between).
The main issue is that I'd like to set up a workflow that is most painless in terms of editing the title durations and moving them around. I'm new to FCE -- switching over from Vegas -- and have to relearn my habits.

Thanks, Michel. That was my inclination, especially if I'm going to be revising the timing a lot -- the other way would seem to involve a lot of reimporting the FCE background movie into LiveType. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't overlooking something.

Export to After Effects CS3 in FCE 4 workflow.
I set up my FCE 4 prefs to edit video in After Effects CS3. After I rendered the clip in FCE 4, I right clicked to >edit video in editor, After Effects CS3 opened and low and behold sat my clip with the same settings that my FCE 4 project had. After some AE title work, to get it back into FCE 4 I used Render Queue in AE set at the same settings. I then took the .mov and overwrote the clip in FCE 4. The composite looked like the original ( with the new compositing work of course ). The audio even worked perfect.
I tried to do the same thing in Motion 2 ... um .... no luck. Motion would not open any files... period.
This may work as a nice round trip compositing workflow that was taken away with the export features that were in FCE 3.5 HD.
Since Motion is not available as a separate app any longer, this may be a great alternative for FCE 4 users who what to do some compositing in their projects.
EdCurious, what does Apple want you to do with open video in editor feature in FCE 4?
I think it works with Livetype 2, but it's not a video editor in my opinion.
Can't round trip with Motion and FCP with the edit in video option. I think I saw a tutorial once where after you have done an initial round trip, you can use this feature to go back and forth?
I know that you can open Motion projects in AE by changing the extension. I do not think I would open LiveType in AE, doesn't make sense to me.
At least us FCE users who want to do some compositing work have some options. I still wish I could round trip with Motion though.

FCE Best workflow practices + color flattening?
Hey guys - I'm a relative amateur at Final Cut Express but I can work my way around it easily enough. I've just finished a basic editing project but when I export the movie (using the "Export Quicktime Movie" or "Export Using Quicktime Conversion" dialogues) the colors desaturate and wash out.
It's pretty obvious - all I have to do is open up my final sequence in Quicktime Pro and compare it frame-to-frame with my sequence in Final Cut Express. The colors are noticeably less saturated. It's a bummer because my sequence looks great in FCE. Any suggestions?1. Are you viewing the two versions on the same part of the screen because monitors are notoriously uneven in their brightness. I have 2 CRT Macs together with the LCD iMac and they are all brighter on the left side of the screen. The difference is very noticeable when viewing the identical image simultaneously in the Viewer and Canvas.
2. Have you viewed the video on a TV as you may find it looks perfectly OK? -
FCE crashes during Quicktime Export

FCE consistently crashes when exporting clip as Quicktime Movie. I am new to FCE.
When performing this Workflow (below), if I do NOT add the Zoom keyframes the clip exports fine.
This is the Workflow that causes the consistent crash of FCE.
Workflow
1. Set up as DV-NTSC
2. Import DV clip
3. double click clip in browser to add to Viewer
4. Click motion tab on Viewer
5. Add two KeyFrames
6. Set first Keyframe to 100% Zoom - set second Keyframe to 300% Zoom
7. Scrub Zoom profile in Viewer - looks fine
8, Drag dv clip from Viewer to Canvas
9. Scrub clip in timeline - looks good - zooms correctly
10. Select clip in timeline & select Sequence > "Render All" (it only comments on the audio)
11. File > Export > Quicktime Movie (self Contained or not - still crashes)
12. FCE crashes every time
I've added all Updates (though I cannot find an update for 3.5.1)
I've used StreamClip to alter the compression settings of the dv clip - no success.
I've deleted prefs & User Data folder.
Is there something more that I should be doing prior to attempting to export?

IMovie 6 FCE - odd error, plan B?
Hello!
Bear with me - i'm an old time pro at iMovie (1, 4, 5, and 6), and have just upgraded to FCE HD. As in, loaded it up 6 hours ago!
So, why did I upgrade? I'm pushing the outer limits of iMovie - particuarly with titles, transitions, small video effects, and other motion - exactly what FCE is better at! I see this is going to be a huge learning curve - and i'll work my way up eventually.
In any case, I have been working on an iMovie - er, rather - half a dozen iMovies, which will eventually be combined and iDVD'd. Basically, I've been taking pictures with my Nikon digital still camera, photoshopping together some silly scenes, and placing them in the video track, complete with narration, SFX/VFX, music, and so on. It's kind of like a video comic book, actually. Each is around 5 minutes. Most are done, but there are a couple of fixes i'd like to make in FCE - particuarly with sheer lack of title options in iMovie (and plethora of them in FCE/Livetype)
Well, my biggest worry is about the problem many seem to be having with iMovie transitions not importing, or screwing up the sync between audio and video. It seems many of the posts (that I saw) were posted in 2005 - before iMovie 6 and FCE 3.5. Has that changed?
Said error is as follows: After trying to import an iMovie project via the import command in FCE, It gave a warning - "File Error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
Ooookay...
So, plan B - better safe than sorry. Like I mentioned, most of these "movies", more of chapters really, are finished. It's just one or two I'd like to re-work a bit.
Since this is mainly just a hobby, i'm not TOO worried about pristine quailty, just as long as the timing is correct. So, I should probably just export what I have, and re-tool the resulting movies on FCE. Question is, what format should I use? It's a DV project, so I can just export "full quality", however I don't know enough about FCE to know what it's "native formats" are.
Oh - I have also tried to simply open the "Timeline Movie" from the Cache folder in the iMovie project (control-click the package, "Show package contents"), but it siezes up FCE.
In any case, the one critical condition about the movie is the timing - because I don't have a video camera, and the movies are made with stills, the timing between audio and video is pretty critical.
Well, I hope that made sense - I think I need some sleep!
Just in case: I'll repeat the questions:
1. What does that error mean?
2. Are the iMovie > FCE oddities fixed?
3. If not, what's the best format to export my iMovie, to import into FCE without too much quality loss?
4. Is there any special thing I need to do to ensure that the audio and video of the exported movie sync up?

The problem with converting iMovie into FCE is that it is like changing apples into bananas - a tricky task!
As for an export choice I am not absolutely sure without doing a test but I think "Full Quality DV" will be the best. (I have only got iMovie 4 so don't know whether iMovie 6 has different options).
Just test it and see - it will probably take less time than writing a letter!

FCE 3.5 won't open after installing ProKit upgrade
Hey all
I downloaded and installed using software update what was called ProKit 4.5 (or something like that). Now I can't seem to re-start FCE 3.5. I did try to re-install it but nothing- it'll startup but then not open. Any ideas?wow. no help.
I did find a way to get my FCE working again. After trying to re-install ALL of FCE, LiveType and Soundtrack, it still wouldn't open. So I deleted my personal preferences (the folder held in my profile Library preferences folder) and then it would start. Not sure what in that folder caused it not to open, but maybe someone with the same problem will take a look at deleting it.
My project was still OK. -
FCE HD Crashes when trying to open "capture" window.
The subject line says it all.... I open FCE HD, try to open the capture window (either by shortcut or by menu) I get the "Initializing Capture" and boom, FCE closes down. It's not even the kind of crash that gives me a dialog box with an opportunity to report the crash to Apple.
I haven't used FCE since I upgraded to Tiger...could that be it?

I did the following:
removed:
system library:preferences: anything with Quicktime in name
system library:quicktime: I discarded all of these components, but then had to reinstall them from their various install disks (FCE, LiveType, etc.); I'd save them in another folder and see what shows up after a Quicktime reinstallation, and put back the ones which QT didn't install itself. After install, if everything works, then you've got a good set; if something still is awry, try putting the old, pre-install components back one at a time until everything works. (fingers crossed).
user library:preference: anything with Quicktime in the name
Applications: quicktime player
This is a not a guaranteed comprehensive list: I'm doing it from memory and searching around my system for quicktime system files. The diciest part would be the "components" some of which are part of the quicktime installation, some of which come from other applications.
Then I downloaded the latest Quicktime from the quicktime area and installed it.
Before you mess with this, do a back up of your system so you don't wind up with something which doesn't work at all.
Oh, and one other thought: if you have any antivirus software installed, turn it off.

Boris Title 3D does not appear in FCE 3.5 viewer generators menu
Hello. I've recently installed FCE HD 3.5 (all the options with LiveType, SoundTrack, etc.), and now I'm learning it.
But now I cannot find the Boris 3D text generator under viewer generetors pop up menu. I'm pretty sure that 3D title is installed. Please, any help on how to get Boris under generators menu would be greatly appreciated.

I've done all of that last night: completely deleted all the items (files, folders, plists, prefs, etc) as described on Apple's site. Then reinstalled FCE with all the related components. Still NO BORIS!
I think there is no point to bother people anymore on this forum. I really appreciate your efforts to help. This must be some kind of unfortunate "hidden bug" on my system that I'm going to have to live with.
As a last resort I might try to stop by the nearest Apple store and try to find someone who knows FCE, etc. Or I might try to contact Apple, file the bug report, or something like that (can some one tell me how to go about it?).
If all else fails, I'll just use LiveType for my titling needs. Would this be a viable option?

Two Problems Encountered with FCE
As I was in the middle of editing a sequence, the following message appeared:
"Error: Out of Memory"
I know that ought to be self explanatory, but could someone please elaborate?
Another issue I run into is that on occasion, FCE will unexpectedly quit, whereby I will have to reopen and start from the point I last saved.
I'm curious as to whether these problems encountered are related to me working with multiple projects simultaneously--looking at my Mac's specs, am I operating beyond its capacity?

That would explain your out of memory problems. All of them are heavy users of memory, especially PhotoshopCS. Try not to have them running at the same time you're editing in FCE. You can't use all of them at the same time anyway. Photoshop+FCE ...or... FCE+LiveType ...or... FCE+SoundTrack I could see depending on what you're doing, but not all of them at once. -
LiveType Won't Import into Final Cut Express
I recently purchased the new Macbook Pro and migrated Final Cut Express and LiveType from my old iMac to my MBP. However, when I try importing LiveType text to FCE, I get the following message:

Did I forget to copy something over when I migrated?migrated Final Cut Express and LiveType...
There's your problem. FCE places lots of files at system level, many of them in invisible folders. Migration Assistant does not copy these properly.

I'm fairly new to this business and have the limited version, FCE. Lately I have been having the problem that when I capture a clip (whether it's in a new project or an old one) and drag it to the timeline, I first have to render it before I can play back. Is that normal?

FCP comes with about 3000 pages of manuals. But that's FCP. I've never used FCE. FCE must have something that can help you so open t the online help system and look for sequence settings. Or you can just start dropping every menu along the top till you find sequence>settings.
You will need the manual to figure out how to make them match because you will need to know how to determine what video format you have imported, how you imported it, and if any changes have been made to your media files by you improperly setting the software or if you have a hardware i/o that was not set correctly. None of those questions can be answered easily without you knowing much more about your system and how FCE's workflow is designed.

Transparent background - export to iMovie?
I'm pretty new to FCE/LiveType; I've played a bit with creating titles in LifeType with a transparent background and moved them over to FCE. I have an unfinished project in iMovie 06 and was wondering if I could create a LiveType title with a transparent background and import it into iMovie?
I made a 3 second test title (animated), and then went to "render -> movie"; appeared on desktop as test.mov file. Dragged that into iMovie. Did not knowingly convert that to .dv.
I then created another one, simply went to "save" and it appeared as test.ipr on the desktop. Dragged that one into iMovie as well (no conversion there either).
Both played fine, both had black backgrounds. AFAIK, there are no options in iMovie to set/change the default black background color. Maybe iMovie automatically converts to .dv during import? And, as I mentioned, it occurred to me that it simply may not work because I can't "superimpose" it onto an image or clip in iMovie anyway unless I can find a plugin that will let me insert "picture within picture" or similar. It may be that I only have two options:
Either import an image/clip into LiveType, create the text, render as movie and then import into iMovie, or create text, save as .ipr, import into FCE, export and back into iMovie.

Pixellated titles - how do I get sharp text
I am working on an anamorphic project and am attempting to add a plain page of text to the project.
Have tried to add text and also use Text 3D from within FCE, LiveType and also creating the text in Photoshop and importing into FCE.
Every time the text has been rendered and exported as a QT movie it appears pixellated when viewing in Quicktime. Text for Final Cut Express HD 3.5
I'm hoping that Tom Wolsky will answer this question. I purchased the Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop, second edition and learn a great deal about FCE HD workflow. Now that I've upgraded to 3.5 I'm wondering if there is enough new to this upgrade to warrant purchasing the FCE HD 3.5 book by Tom Wolsky. Thanks.
The main improvements in FCE 3.5 are the Dynamic RT and Keyframing of Effects.
Dynamic RT involves virtually no learning, Keyframing does.
However, many users don't even know what Keyframing is, let alone how to use it.
Are you likely to need it?
I would suggest you hang on to the book you have and if the time comes that you feel it can't cope, then think about getting the new one.
I have used FCE 1.0.1, FCE 3.0 and FCP 5.1 and to be honest, the differences between all three are so marginal that you can hardly tell which one you are using.
Tom and others may think differently.

Storing presentations in Aperture?
can anyone give me a little advice as to how to manage "presentations" on the Mac and in Aperture?
i have gotten started with putting together little "slideshows" in Aperture that i can also post to something like Vimeo on the web and I have also done a more formal KEYNOTE presentations. i also have pdf versions of this which i 'digitally printed' but i now know that Aperture does not like multi page pdf files.
so in addition to .key files that i cannot seem to import into Aperture i am also noticing that i have .avi and .mov and 3gp file types as well that are already in Aperture.
three questions:
1. is there a "best" way to handle the avi or mov or 3gp files such as exorting them and then re-importing as some kind of mac "standard" file type?
2. can i get the keynote presentations into aperture or do these have to stay in a folder in finder somewhere?
3. any other advice on organizing this sort of "presentation data" on the mac?

JonWell, different strokes for different folks. I prefer to manage my photos; I don't care for the "inbuilt" management. I don't want (actually can't stand) "events", "projects", "dates", "faces", or whatever is the default. I don't need tags. I don't want "ratings" - my photos are either worth keeping or they're not. I can find my Columbia river gorge trip photos in a folder I created and appropriately named "Gorge 2012". So, as long as I can remember that I was in the gorge , I can find the pictures, LOL
I can search for camera type, resolution, place, subject, even my custom tags, like height of the sun over the horizon and define smart albums and web pages based on these rules.
Great for you if you need that - I have no need for it.
And Aperture keeps track of the different versions of any image and stores them economically. I do not have to waste diskspace on different versions of the same image by creating duplicates.
Again, I don't have a need for that because I don't keep more than one photo. It is either the original or a digitally enhanced version - whichever I like best is the one that is kept.
The only exception would be my artwork creations, but those are not photos - I will keep my original background for instance because I may use that again in another project (i.e. the birthday card I created for baltwo).

Wouldn't it just be easier to use an app designed for the work you do? Elements? Acorn? Pixelmator? Graphic Converter?
I may use one or more/all of the following with one photo (depending on what I will be using the photo for): Graphic Converter, PS Elements, Image Tricks, Aperture, Digital Photo Professional, Swift Publisher and Photo to Movie. I will also use Photos while making a movie (as a background, for video layering, etc with FCE, LiveType, iMovie HD, the new iMovie and iDVD). I've experienced very little loss since I won't save as a .jpg until I'm done working on it.
FWIW, I believe we had a similar conversation some time ago; I simply want and use folders for my photos: "gorge 2012". I don't want it cross referenced, places, faces, dates, or whatever - just a container (folder) holding those particular photos. I find it much easier to deal with that than having to worry about a previous/future/incompatible library version. I control my Photos folder and can drag a copy of it anywhere I like.
I actually tried iPhoto some time ago and became completely frustrated at the flashing/moving dates "2010", "2011", etc while scrolling and trying to find a photo. I prefer a filing cabinet type filing system: alphabetically arranged folders containing appropriately named pics. I also use column view (never icon view). I never did find what I was looking for in iPhoto - until I went to my folder to find it.
As for keeping all materials in one folder while working on a movie project: since my sources are from half a dozen different people besides myself, I do not want any of those photos or video clips permanently - once I'm done with the movie, they will be deleted (there will be about 300 GB worth of files accumulated). It is therefore much easier for me to keep all of them in one folder (after I've catalogued them, weeded out what I don't want, enhanced others, etc - in other words, once they're the right size, look good, and ready to use). I'm dealing with photo sizes from 480 x 319 to 1920 x 1080 (and video in 720p and 1080p) and I have to find ways to incorporate them all and make the whole thing look good. And, when the movie is done and 20 - 40 copies burnt, the entire movie project folder is Toast (pun intended)
As I said, different strokes for different folks - my system works for me whereas iPhoto's, Aperture's, et al does not.
