FCE media offline but not reconnecting

edit 2:  Alright, so if I select and highlight each individual clip on the timeline itself it allows me to reconnect the media.  I would still like to know if there's a solution though because I have a lot of clips and having to reconnect media for each individual clip is incredibly frustrating when I know FCE is capable of doing this in batches.  So... any help would be wonderful.
Original post:
Hi!  I've been working on this video project for a while.  I tend to prefer Premeire or Final Cut Pro but my workplace only has Final Cut Express.
I needed to log out and log in a different user since I was going out of town and when I logged back in because some of the files were on a share drive, I had to reconnect media.  Which is fine - I've done it before, no problem.  I got the media reconnected, re-rendered and then looked down at my timeline and realized that there were clips that hadn't connected.
Here's where it gets weird though. Everything looks connected in the Bins.  I found all the files, connected everything.  FCE has greyed out the reconnect media button.  I can't connect anything else.
And yet as you can see below, despite the media being there, I am still getting the media offline message.
Does anyone have a solution to what's going on here.  I'm completely baffled and I've never had anything like this occur before.
I'm running FCE version 4.0.1 on OS X 10.6.8
edit to add:  The three other videos that I've been working on simultaneously did not have this problem.  I still had to reconnect media but this is the only video that's doing this.
Thanks for all your help!  If you need additional details just let me know.

Here are is a larger image of what's going on.

I figured out what has happened.  The clips were all from same original source, but somehow some had audio coded in mp2, others in mp3.  The first clip was mp3 and Premiere CS5 version spotted that codec.  For some reason PCS5 is not spotting the mp2 codec, while CS4 could, which is why I didn't have this problem back then.
The initial "media offline" message is terribly misleading, and the audio problem message is not specific enough.  I'll try to get CS5 to use the mp2 codec CS4 worked with.
Thanks for your time.
Just to confuse things more, It's worth noting that the mp2 clips show up in Bridge cs5 and the audio plays fine there.  What's with Premiere Pro?  Irritating.

  • Media offline (but not first clip) when import cs4 project to cs5

I've several clips in a cs4 project.  All original clips, all from the same footage, are in the proper folder.  When I imported the project into my fresh cs5 install, the first clip shows up properly -- video and audio are present -- but the rest in the sequence show "media offline."  When I search for the clip and select it to be linked, I'm informed that "The selected files do not contain audio media used by clip references in one or more sequences."  Clicking yes then gives me a clip in the project resources and timeline windows with no sound.
This makes no sense, since all clips are from the same source footage.  If the first clip in the sequence is fine, what's the problem?  Thanks for your help.

  • I click on "add to library" and the file shows up in my iTunes media file, but not in my iTunes.

That didn't work - I'm so confused - it just doesn't make sense.  How could it be there, but not show up on itunes???

  • FCE claims media offline, but it's not

I opened up my project today and noticed that two of the video clips on the Timeline have turned black with the red stripe across the middle that says "Media Offline." Both of these clips were derived from a single clip in the Browser, and that clip is still sitting right there in the Browser with all the rest of the clips, although it too has turned black with the red message stripe across it.
I looked on the hard drive and the original clip is still there in the folder I took it from when I dropped it into FCE's browser (It's in a Media folder inside of an iMovie project). And the clips play just fine in the timeline--the playhead moves right through them normally and the video plays smoothly. Nothing is amiss at all, except for the colors of the clips and the false claim that the media is offline.
What causes this? Although everything is still functioning just fine, I don't like the look of those clips sitting there with that big red warning on them, false though it is, and I worry that iDVD might not like them either when I go to burn this project to a DVD. Any way to fix this annoyance?

I had this problem a while ago, and the reason was that the clips went in fact offline for a short while and then back online (they were on an external drive), but the clip thumbnails were not updated.
I used the trick to force thunbnail updating by deleting the Thumbnail Cache (I guess this is the file name - cannot check now) in the FCE Documents folder. FCE will rebuild all thumbnails at next restart.
Probably there is a better way, but this worked.

  • Timeline thumbnails show media offline, but media is not offline.

Short version: I opened a project today that I had been working on for a long time. Some of the thumbnails in one of my timelines show up as the red "Media off-line" image. But the media is not off-line. I can play the clips just fine. Everything else seems (more or less -- see below) normal except for a handful of these off-line thumbnails. It's not a disaster, but it makes it hard to find my way around. And I'm worried that it's a sign of something more serious wrong under the surface.
Long version: I'm using an older Macbook Pro with an ESATA expresscard. My media is all on external ESATA drives. My project file is on the Macbook's internal hard drive.
I use my Macbook as a desktop machine. The computer sits on a dedicated shelf on my desk. My cat makes a habit of sleeping on top of the machine. (You can probably guess where this is going.) Most of the time this is not a problem, but about a week ago he decided to stretch in just the wrong way and pushed the expresscard out of its slot. After screaming and throwing the cat across the room, I saved the project file, remounted the disks, re-opened the project file, and breathed a big sigh of relief when everything seemed to be fine. I quit FCP again and put the project on hold for about a week.
Today I reopened the same project file and the trouble started. At first all the timeline thumbnails showed up as media-offline, even thought all indications were that it was on-line. In addition, all my audio and video renderings were gone. I re-did them, and after a while some of the thumbnails restored themselves as well. But not all of them.
All of which has me a little flustered.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Is there a way to force FCP to refresh the timeline thumbnails? It's hard to find my way around now that all the clips look the same.
    Thanks.

i've experienced this before, but i can't really remember how i sorted it,
i may have deleted the thumbnails out of the scratch disc, or it may have been that i switched the timeline view to name only saved and closed down, then opened it up again and switched them back on to refresh
but i know on no refresh thumbnails button in fcp itself

  • Random "media offline" try to reconnect audio but reconnects to camera audi

for some odd reasons FCP just told me multiple sequences are offline but I didn't do anything to cause this.
I wouldn't care but the sequences are made up of video clips with audio from a seperate device linked to it so when I go to reattach the files it thinks the audio is the wrong file and says there isn't the correct timecode etc. How can I make it so I don't have to resync all this! Thanks!

It happened spontaneously? Mid session? After re-opening FCP? Details needed.

What version of FCP? Where did the media come from? How was it ingested? Where is (was) the media stored? Why is the audio separate from the video? Where does the audio come from? How is it "linked" to the video?
    What are your sequence settings?
Have you tried to restore to an earlier version of the project where things were working correctly?
The more information you provide, the higher the chance that someone can help.
    Thanks

  • Thumbnails in one project "Media Offline" but Canvass OK

One of my projects now has replaced the thumbnails in some of the clips in the timeline with red and "Media Offline. However, the media is online in the browser, and viewing the clips in the Viewer and playing the Timeline in the canvas perform normally. Other projects are not affected. How can I correct that please?

Probably those cplis were offline for a while (external disk temporarily not connected ?), and when they were reconnected again their thumbnails were not updated.
When it happened to me I just deleted the thumbnail cache and FCE automatically rebuilt them.

  • Media file thumbnails in browser say "media offline", but files are online and available for viewing/editing. How do I get a thumbnail of the clip back?

I am moderately experienced with FCE, but cannot figure out this issue. The thumbnails in my browser say "media offline", and no longer show a thumbnail of my video clip. When I try to reconnect the media files, the reconnect dialog box only checks for "online" media. I am able to view and work with the media files in my project even though it says they are offline. This issue seems to occur after a power outage. Its more of an annoyance than anything else, but I would still like to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Figured it out.

  • FCE media offline changes with each click

Alright.  This is an extra weird one.
Anyone have an explanation for this?  (video:  http://instagram.com/p/uqOE5cgAkn/?modal=true )  (my apologies for instagram but it was the easiest)
The fun begins when some of those clips ARE actually offline (and not working in the timeline) but most of them are?  Any suggestions?

If so, what are the advantages of:
DVD -> Streamclip -> FCE -> Streamclip -> Web via Flash
    over:
DVD -> Handbrake -> iMovie -> FCE -> iMovie -> Web via Flash
Anything other than one less step, and not having to deal with iMovie clunkiness?
Generally when working with digital video, it is the case that the less steps you take to get your video from the source to your final creation the better. Every time you use a program such as Streamclip or Handbrake to convert your media, you are losing a little bit of quality doing so. Secondly, Handbrake should really never be used as a conversion program to prepare your video for editing. It is meant to convert to delivery codecs such as MPEG-4 and not to prepare the video for more editing. Ideally, the best editing process for your workflow would be:
DVD -> VOB files to Streamclip -> converted files to FCE -> use Quicktime Conversion to make a web friendly video -> Web.
Anyway, glad the crisis was averted and you're getting used to the new OS/program! I wish you luck with all future projects, and if you need more help we'd be happy to offer assistance.

  • Media Offline but it's there

Brought up a old show, when it launched in FCP 5.1.4 said it was from an older version, should it update and I clicked OK to update. All the video clips in the time line show a image, if I open the original clip in the Viewer it's there & plays correctly but when I play the show in the Canvas all the video clips say Media Offline.
I've tried to re-render everything, I closed FCP and trashed the preferences using FCP4 Rescue but nothing I do seems to work. When I open the show it warns me there is one file missing and that's it. There's a glitch somewhere but I can't figure out what to do.

I didn't update the app, I had FCP open editing a show, I closed that show - not FCP - then opened an older show (probably edited with FCP 3) it said:
+"The file format of this project is from an earlier version. Would you like to update this project file?+
+Note: Once saved, this file cannot be opened by previous versions. To avoid overwriting the original project files, you can use Save Project As from the file menu when the project updating is complete"+
Problem solved now, I saved myself by doing the Save Project As once it opened the first time (and second). When I opened the file the first time something obviously glitched. Went back and opened & updated the original file a second time everything worked fine, just the one missing file. Go figure.

  • Media Offline but it's there - quarky FCP behavior

FCP7, have been working on a show and everything is fine until today. When I opened the project some of the clips and JPEG graphics I'm using show Offline in the browser and they show Offline in the timeline though when you play the sequence it plays correctly. If you select either a clip or graphic in the browser suddenly other clips show they are offline and some that were showing offline show correctly. Select something else and others change randomly.
I have used Preference Manager to trash the prefs to no avail. Opened an autosave of the show after trashing prefs & rebooting and have the same issues. I can manually reconnect clips in the timeline and they are staying for now, but I reconnect clips/graphics in the browser and it causes others to show offline.

doesn't sound like the clips are actually going offline, just that the thumbnail cache has gone utterly wonky ... the location of your thumbnail cache is set in your FCP System Settings window, so go there and find out where its hiding, then quit FCP and go and delete that thumbnail cache folder and throw away the key (or empty the trash) ... now reopen FCP and see if it starts behaving itself a bit better

  • A video clip that works fine in windows media player but not in Premiere

I have an AVI video clip file that I recorded from an old VHS tape many years back. The file plays just fine in Windows Media Player but when I import it into the latest version of Premiere Pro CS6 the video portion shows nothing but a green screen. The audio track plays fine. I've tried using Adobe Media Encoder to change it into a variety of different formats. Some don't even produce a file and some do but don't work any differently than the original within Premiere. Any suggestions?
    thanx a bunch,

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... A screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

  • Reconnecting Media...Not reconnecting

I open up my project and it says that some files are off line (acutally all of them are) and when I go to reconnect them, nothing shows up in the "Reconnect Files" window. I went to the Browser window, highlighted the files, control-clicked and selected Reconnect Media and the same thing happened.
Where are my files? Could this mean my external Lacie went bad or something? Does it have anything to do with Quicktime?
    Please help.

I open up my project and it says that some files are off line (acutally all of them are) and when I go to reconnect them, nothing shows up in the "Reconnect Files" window.
Once in the reconnect window, the clip name should appear in the top of the window. Select the drive you want to search, then click on search. FCP should find the first file, select it, and enable connect all files in relative path. then click reconnect. It should then reconnect everything but if it does not, you may have to find them one at a time using the same method.

  • I have an issue with Add to iTunes folder incorporating mp3s in iTunes Media folder, but not into my iTunes library.

I am using iTunes 10.5 on Windows 7 (64bit).  This has only started happening since the 10.5 update.  When I add mp3s to "Add to iTunes" folder, the mp3s will be added to a folder within the iTunes Media\Music\ directory, but the song will not show up in my iTunes library.  If I open the mp3 from its location in the directory, it will open in iTunes and be included in the Library go forward.   This issue is not consistent, it has happened the first time I tried to add an mp3, and not the second that I tried to add the exact same file.  Oh also, I have always had the option selected to allow iTunes to keep the media folder organized.
For the time being I have to keep a list of everything I am adding and verify whether it shows up in the library.  If it doesn't I have to run a search to see what exact directory path iTunes put it in, go there and open the file - frustrating and time consuming.  Even more frustrating to me however is that I really don;t know if I have recovered all the added mp3s from before I recognized the problem.
Any ideas?  I was wondering if there maybe was a way to have iTunes refresh its library from the folder?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
