FCE not recognizing my Sony J-30 via Firewire

I hooked up my MacBook Pro running Final Cut Express 4.0 to a Sony J-30 Digital Betacam Player with Firewire (or iLINK as Sony call it).
Using "Easy Setup" in FCE I chose DV-PAL... however my Mac complains that it can't detect any device connected to it. I've checked my FW800->FW400 cable and it's working with my portable hard drive, so I'm not sure why it won't interface with the J-30 - other than the possibility the Sony device is faulty.
Grateful if anyone can point out if I'm missing something obvious. Is there some hidden setting on the J-30 I need to set?

UPDATE:
It turns out that my FW800-FW400 cables are working fine with my hard drives, just not the J-30.
However, I've found a workaround. If I daisy-chain the J-30 to my Firewire hard drive using a FW400->FW400 cable then my Mac sees it.
This is rather odd. Can anyone explain this? Seems as if the J-30 doesn't like converting directly over a FW400->800 cable???

Nikon D810 RAW format support was added in ACR 8.6 you need Photoshop CS6 or newer.  Or you can create DNG file for your NEF files and convert then with older versions of ACR.

  • Sony digital8 camcorder via firewire port, is it digital or analog?

    hi all,
I was successful to view & record from my Sony digital8 cam via firewire port. I'd like to know, is this connection analog or digital? Has anyone been successful to record, back up and edit their precious home videos on a G4 PowerMac? And how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?
    Thanks for your help
    Web dude

is this connection analog or digital?
A Firewire port is all digital.
Has anyone been successful to record, back up and edit their precious home videos on a G4 PowerMac?
Yes. Before the G5 came out, many people used G4s (and some still do) to edit not only home videos, but commercial television programs as well.
how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?
A standard DVD-5 (single layer disc) will hold about two hours of DVD-Video ... video AFTER it's been properly compressed to meet the DVD-Video standard.
However, if you're asking about raw footage (not compressed more than it was recorded), you should be able to get close to 14 minutes of footage per 4.7gb disc. Digital8 uses the DV codec which requires about 13.3gb per hour of footage. If you recorded the tape in SP mode, you should be able to get just over 1 hour of footage per tape.

  • Ipod not recognized on sony xplod

Recently I plugged my daughter's ipod into my car stereo usb and got an error message that said "not supported". My own ipod plays fine as does my other daughter's ipod.(so 2 of 3 work fine).
Wondering if this could be because of the itunes update to 9.0.2.25. All of our ipods are the same versions of nano. The only difference is the versions of itunes on each of our computers. If that is the problem is it possible to downgrade to an older version of itunes?

    Hello jodyfrommarmora,
If you are not seeing your iPod showing up in iTunes on your computer, then refer to the article below to get it sorted out. It will have you check the drivers on your computer to make sure that it has a proper connection.

  • My 1st gen Ipod is not recognized by Itunes 9 (connected by firewire)... is there thomething to do ??

    Hello,
everything is said in the tilte. The ipod (the one like a white brick) is seen by my powerbook (shown on the desktop), and it is recharged, but it's invisible in the last version of Itunes.
    thank's for your help

    See:

    I would start with

Have you tried on another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem?
The iPod Classic uses different drivers than the Nano

  • FCE not recognizing camera

I have a Sony HDR-HC1. FCE HD will recognize the camera when in down-convert mode but not when in HD mode.
    Any suggestions?

Not quite sure what you're asking. Do you mean the HD resolution on the camera? It shoots in 1080i. There are two settings for vcr mode. One is HD and the other is HD-DV mode in which it automatically down-converts the HD to SDV. FCE has no problem seeing and digitizing the video in that mode. But it will not see the camera when in HD mode.
Is there a specific setting in FCE for it to recognize HD? I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • FCE not recognizing camcorder

    i have closed and restarted
all cables are in place - iMovie recognises & uploads fine
    just not FCE!
    h e l p please
    thank you

I'm kidding, aren't you? I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way anyone can help you based on this.
Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using?

  • Certain Music CDs Not Recognized by SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A Superdrive

Subject drive recognizes all DVDs, CD-ROMs, and some (but not all) commercial Compact Discs. Case in point is "Diva," published by Nemo Studios under license to Angel Records. This is an audio collection of Sarah Brightman's performances. Inserting this disc (and probably others) into my PM Dual CPU 2.7 GHz G5 results in "spin-stop-spin-stop-eject." No icon appears; the disc will not mount. I have verified that other CDs mount and their contents will play in iTunes with no problem. The disc in question also mounts, opens, and plays perfectly on my wife's Windows PC.
The firmware of my Sony drive is "KAS7." Is there an available update? Could that be the problem?

"as I wrote above, after it failed to mount, my wife put it in her Fry's PC CD drive and it played perfectly. "
Mac drives are more sensitive than the pc drives. My pc drive plays anything including cracked CD/DVDs.
Again, try a drive cleaner. Another thing you can try is to repair permissions & restart your computer. Sometimes that is all it takes.

  • 3rd Generation iPod is not recognized in iTunes or Finder with FireWire

My refurbished 3rd generation 30 GB (used the battery replacement plan) all of a sudden is not recognizable in either iTunes of the Finder when connected to a FireWire port, which it has done many times. However when I connect it with a USB connection it is recognized, but when I go to restore the software, I’m told I need a FireWire connection by the warning windows from iTunes.
    Any suggestions?
Looking at the postings, it appears that other iPod users are having the same problem.
    Hank Kearns

Strange. Both of my Macs are PowerPC Macs running 10.4.10. My Third Generation iPod works fine. The only problem is that when charging it from the wall using the iPod Power Adapter it won't charge to 100 percent. Even after syncing it up directly to either my '17 iMac G5 1.8 GHz or '12 PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz it won't charge all the way. The Knowledge Base Articles I've read seem to indicate that in rare cases the iPod's logic board or Hold Switch may need to be replaced. So far I've replaced the 10 GB hard drive that died with a 20 GB hard drive, replaced the Hold Switch & replaced the Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. I think in my case the iPod logic board may need to be replaced. I originally bought mine refurbished & replacing the iPod costs about $299 according to Apple. Replacing the logic board only costs $65 though if you Google iPod with Dock Connector parts. The link shows up in one of the ads in the right pane of the search results. I really think Apple should recall the Third Generation iPods with defective logic boards. The least they could do is offer a logic board replacement program like they do for Macs.

  • IPod Classic is not recognized by iTunes

    Hie There,
my i Pod Classic latest generation (Video) was a view days ago recognized by iTunes.
Now it is not recognized when i plug it via USB to my Mac Book Air (2013).
Why is that happened? I did`t changed any settings in itunes.
I Thought about to reset my iPod Classic, but even this ist not working and itunes don`t recognizes my iPod Classic anymore.
    Can somebody help.
Thank You and have a nice Day all!!!!

Hi I had a similar issue with my 160gb Classic
Went through many things with Apple on the phone all to no avail.
Took it to the Genius Bar and managed to get it recognised by iTunes and then restore....but when i plugged it into my MBA or IMac it was not recognised by iTunes and just appeared on the desktop..again.
Given that i am using Yosemite and iTunes 12 and reinstalled iTunes, Apple answer was to do a reinstall on my MBA!
Reluctantly i did this and it worked!!!!!!!!
It was recognised by the ancient iTunes9 before updating to 12 again and it was still recognised....
Just got to reinstall all my music, photos, documents.....at least i have my retro 160Gb iPod Classic to load everything on....
    hope this helps

  • IPod not recognized since upgrade to iTunes 4.9

I haven't done any extensive troubleshooting yet, but at a first glance, it appears that since the installation of iTunes 4.9, my iPod is no longer being recognized when it is connected via Firewire.
It does not mount on the desktop, cannot be seen by iTunes, and iPod updater does not see it as being connected.
I've done the usual maintenance, repaired permissions, deleted plists, etc... and nothing seemed to help.
I'll be playing around some more tonight, but I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything similar. I read a few posts here that were somewhat related, but most were USB issues, and not Firewire.

Yes! I too have the same problem. I initially thought it was because I have an "old" 3rd generation iPod and a G3 iMac. I was ready to buy I new iPod today, but now I see the problem is something larger.
Before I spend more $$$ on an iPod, I will watch here for a possible solution. Oh, iPod Updater doesn't work for me (again, it's an old, 2003 model iPod). I tried the "battery drain" thing- no luck either.
Was Apple's haste in delivering iTunes 4.9 (with Podcasting) a goof? Why was this not tested? I can't believe they would make a mistake?! Not Apple. Was Microsoft involved with the development of iTunes 4.9? I bet that explains it! (wink, wink)

  • External HDs not showing up on computer via firewire and usb

All external hds do not show up on the computer via firewire or usb. I must have perfomed some updates with my hardware plugged in. Does anybody know how to get this fixed?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!
    DALE
