FCE NTSC video source export to PAL?

I have an NTSC video source in Final Cut Express. How do I export this as a PAL video file? I've looked under the export settings, but I do not see any options there to convert it.

It can't be done during export from FCE. What is the intended use?
If you want to burn a playable DVD, use iDVD and don't worry about NTSC vs PAL. Virtually all PAL DVD players will play an NTSC DVD.
If you must absolutely have a PAL video, use JES Deinterlacer

NTSC Project Export to PAL?

I have a project that I edited in Premiere and a DVD project designed in Encore CS6 - all in NTSC. A client in the UK needs a copy in PAL. What is the best way to approach this? Encore does not allow me to change the standard in Settings or Prefs. The DVD project is made up of mostly Dynamically linked Premiere sequences, shot and edited in NTSC

Neil, I am able to export PAL from an NTSC sequence in Premiere. Or I can create a PAL sequence and cut and paste from the NTSC sequence already edited - without timeline markers, though. This is pretty frustrating stuff to keep track of. And I have no idea it will playback in England.

I understand your pain, believe me - and if your client is specifically asking for PAL, then that is what you have to deliver.
Exporting a PAL asset from an NTSC sequence is indeed possible in PPro, but be very very careful as the frame rate differs from the NTSC, and you will have to check playback very carefully to make sure you are not just dropping frames which could result in twitchy playback. (NTSC is 30fps, PAL is 25 - all sorts of room for catastrophe there)
There are settings in the render dialogue that can help with scaling (your footage will be scaled as well) and different render frame rates compared to sequence frame rates.
Just tick the "Maximum render quality" and "Maximum depth" options & cross fingers & toes.
Personally I have had much more success with After Effects than PPro for this type of work - the thing to remember in AE conversions is to be absolutely sure ytou set the option in t he render dialogue to "composition length" instead of "Whole timeline" or whatever it is called (memory fails me right now) or else your run time will change. To explain what I mean, we recently had to create a title where there were 5 film clips, one in NTSC, 2 in PAL and 2 more in 4 and 12 fps stop-frame animations. Without the "composition length" option ticked the thing simply ran out a hell of a lot faster than it should have done but with that option checked, AE just created new frames and the results were great.
Menus also have PAL resolution of course, as well as the different PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) earlier discussed. Scaling these will ruin text in mnore cases than not & t he best approach is to rebuild all menus from scratch - it is actually quite simples in PhotoShop - just open your original NTSC screen, create a new PAL menu template from the presets given and then (after turning off SPHL layers) merge or flatten the original NTSC screen, and then drag the background onto the blank PAL menu, hit CTRL-T (make it a scalable object) and resize to fit your new screen - you may well need to fill in the blanks - and then just drop your button layers in & tweak.
Final option is to check with client & ask them why they need PAL - which I have to congfess raises one question in my mind:
WHen you shot the footage, had you been asked to supply NTSC or PAL originally? If they asked for NTSC, then you should charge them for the reworking to PAL.
However, if they wanted just PAL in the first place then you have to bite the bullet on this one.

Merging two versions; one w/PAL Audio one w/NTSC Video

Here's an oddity...for a project was given a 2 hour video file in NTSC w/really bad sound levels. When I asked for it to be given a corrected copy, I got one with PAL video, with bad picture but great sound. Trying to get a third copy (third time is the charm) but for fun trying to see if there is a way to merge the two. First thing I tried was using the PAL Audio under the NTSC video (which of course didn't work, as the audio was longer due to frame rate, I assume). Then tried to change the length of the PAL audio in ProTools, changing it's speed by a small percent so the final length matched the NTSC video (fun experiment, but the synch wasn't at all right). Even tried converting the footage via Nattress, but no such luck.
Curious if there's anything else I should try for experimental learning...

I say downoad as it has to match this when people have a asymetric service like most (A)DSL services are.

Jerky video on export

I recently bought a camcorder (Samsung Q11TP) and edited a video in iMovie. The clips imported fine (50 fps) and all edited ok with clips also from my iPhone. However once exported and played in Quicktime the scenes using my camcorder clips were jerky. The scenes from the iPhone were fine. The clips from the camcorder were full HD but as I say played fine in iMovie, it was only once exported did they play jerky.
I also exporteed to iDVD with jerky results also when played on my DVD player. I now notice that the original clips stored on the harddrive play jerky.
I have since imported some more clips but this time not directly in iMovie. I copied them on the hardrive and then exported them from there. On a quick edit test, this seems to prevent any jerkiness.
But I still have these clips that I want to keep and edit - I no have the originals on the camcorder. Is there a way of bringing these clips back to their un-jerky states? or is it because I edited a project with a mixture of sources?

One common origin to Jerky DVDs are that iDVD is factory set to NTSC (29.97fps) and if PAL (25fps) material is used then it will do a DVD but a very jerky one.
Set iDVD to PAL first when starting a new project.
Keep Recording, iMovie/FinalCut and iDVD at same fps. Or convert material via JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to the standard needed. This will do it much better. There are Professional alternatives to astronomical costs - and to nearly no visibly gain.

Premiere Elements 7: share/export DV-PAL in FLV/QT/WMV, black bars on top/bottom

During export (step "share", export for "PC" - sorry, if I use some wrong terms, got a german interface) of only DV-PAL video to FLV/QT/WMV there are always black bars on top/bottom of the video and the picture is wrong in aspect ratio. I can't help.
I tried different resolutions (original 720x576, 502x402, 320x240) and, as only possible with QT/WMV, different pixel aspect ratios (PARs), even user-defined PARs and 'wrong' aspect ratios (like 512x402). No chance. (I think precise user-defined data like "1,094" is not possible, because results did not change anyhow and this value is shown as "1".) With e.g. QT, 640x512, PAR 1,067 there are black bars with 6 px each.
My project settings must be correct I think: DV-PAL, 720x576, 4:3, 25 fps.
DV-PAL- and MPEG-Export/Share is no problem.
As a workaround I export DV-PAL and convert with XMediaRecode to FLV. But I want direct and clean export with PrEl. That's what I bought it for recently.
I wonder why there are only NTSC-setting suggested in FLV-share. I have to change the size by myself.
And I wonder why Wikipedia says PAR for DV-PAL is "1,0940" and Premiere says "1,067".
I'm new to Premiere Elements 7 (although I got some experience with Premiere 5/6.5, FinalCut, Cinelerra ...) using Windows XP.

I had to deactivate sound because this is Creative Commons stuff and I don't want to give credits. And I changed fps to "like original" because 30 fps as standard in PrEl is wrong. It's PAL here.

FCE crashes during Quicktime Export

QT 7.4.5
FCE consistently crashes when exporting clip as Quicktime Movie. I am new to FCE.
When performing this Workflow (below), if I do NOT add the Zoom keyframes the clip exports fine.
This is the Workflow that causes the consistent crash of FCE.
Workflow
1. Set up as DV-NTSC
2. Import DV clip
3. double click clip in browser to add to Viewer
4. Click motion tab on Viewer
5. Add two KeyFrames
6. Set first Keyframe to 100% Zoom - set second Keyframe to 300% Zoom
7. Scrub Zoom profile in Viewer - looks fine
8, Drag dv clip from Viewer to Canvas
9. Scrub clip in timeline - looks good - zooms correctly
10. Select clip in timeline & select Sequence > "Render All" (it only comments on the audio)
11. File > Export > Quicktime Movie (self Contained or not - still crashes)
12. FCE crashes every time
I've added all Updates (though I cannot find an update for 3.5.1)
I've used StreamClip to alter the compression settings of the dv clip - no success.
I've deleted prefs & User Data folder.
Is there something more that I should be doing prior to attempting to export?

How to copy all video sources to one central location?

Hello
Having picked up excellent tips from the forums and now overcome my initial hiccups I am now running Premiere Elements 8 very successfully and am, delighted with the results BUT I still have a nagging query.
I am using a USB memory stick and an external HDD to bring video sources into my project to be editied and rendered. This works fine but of course whenever I want to amend the project, I need to plug in these devices again, no problem until one day in the future I don't have that particuilar stick or drive!!!!!
Simple question is : How do I copy all these resources to one central location for current and future use please?
I suppose this is a dumb question but please take in to account I'm a keen but very green newbie!!! Many thanks in advance,

Steve, I just went through your Basic Training toturial and I have to say it was one of the clearest, well paced and immediately understandable series I've seen yet. You cover it all quickly and logically and I now see where I made soooooooooo many mistakes. Haven't Adobe head hunted you yet? One minor suggestion. . . being a Brit, PAL is our standard and, because you have all nationalities viewing your material, it might be helpful for the PAL area to be mentioned in the initial project set up too. I know about PAL and NTSC but others may not. Hope you don't mind this tiny point? I can't thank you enough for the guidance you've given me already . . . you're a very patient guy with us newbies! Bill, thanks for the "thumbs up" too on those Harm set ups, it's good to get confirmation from someone who's done it and proved the case. I don't have RAID either but the settings below that level are perfectly fine for me. I'm really looking forward to my next, properly configured project.

Aperture slideshow export to Pal

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way I can export aperture slideshows to PAL to import in dvd studio pro for a dvd in the UK?
I have tried converting the videos with ffmgegx but the quality is not great?
Any ways around this would be very helpful, thanks

Aperture only produces a digital file of your slide show PAL refers to the encoding used when making a video disk.
Whether the video disk is encoded PAL or NTSC is determined by the software you are using to create the video disk.

Export for PAL DVD

I've worked on a project completely in NTSC, have exported it and burned DVDs using DVD Studio Pro, but now a festival in Scottland wants a screener and it has to be in PAL. I've never made a PAL DVD before, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to export and compress my video correctly so there are no "NTSC assets" when I bring it into DVD Studio Pro. I've tried a number of things, but am missing something.

Any chance of asking them to try an NTSC DVD first? - all PAL DVD players (and all recent PAL TVs and projectors) in Scotland (one "t") will play NTSC discs - thereby avoiding the considerable quality loss.
(NB: this does NOT apply the other way - NTSC players don't play PAL, unless specifically designed to.)

Apple DVI to Video Adapter vs Apple PAL DVI to Video Adapter

I've just bought my mum a Mac mini (for Christmas) and although it will almost certainly be mostly used with a VGA monitor she has it would be interesting to see what the picture would be like on her fairly new (CRT) television. (If it's good enough she might prefer it plugged in there - especially since I've also got her a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard - plus wireless networking for accessing the Internet et cetera.) The Apple Store (UK) shows two "suitable" connectors...
a) Apple DVI to Video Adapter
b) Apple PAL DVI to Video Adapter
My local Apple Store (Meadowhall / Sheffield) only has the former and someone I spoke to there yesterday reckoned that it does exactly the same as the latter. I found that hard to believe so called the online Apple Store - yet they couldn't tell me the difference either. So, perhaps someone out there in the Big Wide (European PAL System User) World can help me. If so then perhaps you could also tell me what the quality of the picture is like - though I appreciate that such would be dependant on the television itself.
Incidentally, my girlfriend has a current range iBook and I bought her the corresponding lead for that a while back - the image quality on my (admittedly aging) television not only being rather poor but also only in black and white regardless as to which of the two connections we used. (Her digital still camera plugs into the Composite Video port on the television and a colour picture appears.) The problem sounds like NTSC is being output (the television's not able to handle that) but given that she's got a "British" iBook I suspect the problem is with the television itself. I've actually yet to try that with my mum's television but I will soon - so, perhaps, proving if it's my antique display that's at fault. The VGA output on the iBook is, by the way, fine.

I'm fairly sure you will need the PAL adapter if you are feeding a PAL television set. VGA is VGA, regardless of country of origin (so to speak), but composite video is specific to the TV system in use!
The other reply, about the setting the iBook for PAL output, sounds sensible if the IBook produces composite video directly.

I was at the Apple NAB presentation in Vegas a few weeks ago, and one of the things they showcased in regard to iChat AV was the ability for an editor to videoconference with several other people at once and one of the video feeds in the chat window was actually the output from the editor's Final Cut Pro timeline. As he made changes in the FCP timeline, he could play it out in real time and all the people in the chat could see the video feed and make comments on the edit.
OK- so we were excited because that's a workflow issue we have here. So, we bought some iSight cameras and Tiger and started to do some testing here. The only problem is that it doesn't seem very easy to set up. At first I just thought, "well, they are just playing the timeline out of the firewire port on the FCP machine and another computer is ingesting that firewire stream as a video source for iChat." except when you connect 2 Macs together with a firewire cable, the FCP system doesn't detect a DV video device to output to and the iChat system doesn't detect the incoming firewire stream as a "camera". I spoke to tech support and they said it's not something they support so no luck there.
I did find an article on Creative Cow about someone doing something similar, but it involved exporting the FCP timeline out through a Kona analog video card into an external tape deck that does analog to DV conversion which then can be imported back into iChat as a DV stream, but last time I checked, a Kona card would run me around 1500 bucks.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Based on the Auto Responding iChat Accounts that play films I would guess they were either using an AppleScript to import FCP as the Video sourdce or usiing an Add-On like iChatUSBCam that also alows you to change the video source to the desktop.

Weighing in on NTSC video-to-24p conversion

24p deinterlacing after the fact - from regular NTSC video I find to be inherently flawed. I love the idea of it, and it comes very close to being acceptable. But the more I fuss with it, the more I encounter its "silent movie/image dropping" effect.
Every fifth field is parted with in one way or another, though there are various choices in choosing fields and blending deinterlace protocols and motion blur. However, current technology offers wonderful options for controlling the image in terms of contrast, gamma and diffusion.
True 24 frame per second film and HD divide each passing second by 24 and convert to interlaced video via the tried and true 3:2 pulldown process . On the other hand, the "24p from NTSC" conversion process forces dropped fields leading to a subtle staggered motion. In the end, its a choice between choppiness and excessive motion blur.
The eye is much more accepting of the core math of the 3/2 pulldown. When you think that you are viewing 3 fields of a still image followed by 2, followed by 3, (etc) you would think the eye would react against it, but not so.
Of course, there's 30p conversion from NTSC. I think this is much more useful.
I have deliberately avoided mentioning any product by name here. After month's of toying with the technology, I've arrived at my theory on what the limitations seem to be in practice, and am submitting my opinions for what they are worth.

Specifically, Nattress Film Efx. I find the 24p frame rate option to be an issue for the reasons I described. I've been seeing a lot of stroby 24p images from various sources lately and it finally dawned on me that there's just no way to make NTSC to 24p completely smooth like film or HD. I am very happy with the Nattress program in all other respects. It is excellent and a great value. In fact, from what I've seen of Graham's approach to technology, we are quite lucky to have him. Check out his Cool Blur and G Beauty filters sometime. They are awesome.

Exporting to PAL FLV

Hi Guys,
I can export quite happily to NTSC FLV but there don't appear to be any options to export to PAL
As I'm trying to update work that I have shot in PAL at high res this is a pain.
Any ideas?

How to keep audio synchronized with video when exporting?

I have a few .mp4 source files that I'd like to combine into a single file. I've done the editing and exported. When played, the audio is misaligned to the video. As a test, I've tried exporting a single clip rather than joining a few and the same thing happens. I end up with audio that is misaligned to the video after export even though they are perfectly synched in the source video. As another test I've tried exporting a single clip to .mpeg rather than .mp4 and the audio stays perfectly synched with the video. It seems the misalignment occurs whenever I export to .mp4. I'm obviously missing a fundemental concept here. Can anyone shed some light on it for me? Thanks in advance.

One solution is to set the column width after manually or programmatically refresh the PivotTable, for example:

Another option is to set the column width, then protect the columns from been updated by the user, before refreshing the PivotTable, unprotect the worksheet. For example:
