FCE or FCP for Capturing Now?

I like to use the capture now feature when I use FCP at work? Someone told me this method of capturing works better using FCE. Is that true? Is there a difference? I sometimes get audio and video synch issues using FCP and capture now, would that improve if I got FCE using capture now? Thanks for any input.

They work identically. Sync issues are most commonly related to not using capture settings that match your media.

  • FCP 7, 'Capture Now' suddenly stops working

I have been capturing footage from several tapes for many days now, with zero problems. I started doing some more today,
also with no problems, until about the 4th capture attempt. Suddenly, when I hit 'capture now' during playback, nothing at all
happens. I have more than 2TB of free space on my scratch disk, and no capture settings have been changed. I can control
the deck just fine, so communication between the deck and FCP is not an issue. But it literally went from being fine for one clip,
and completely non responsive for the next. I closed FCP, powered down the camera, re-seated the firewire cables, turned the
camera back on and re opened FCP. Same thing. 'Capture Now' doesn't do a thing. I have imported more than 15 tapes without
a single issue, now suddenly I am dead in the water. What am I missing?
I am using a Sony HC-1 with DV footage; Easy Setup set to DV NTSC, Device Control to Firewire NTSC. As I said, device
control works perfectly, but capture suddenly will not initiate. It's as if the 'capture now' button just went dead,
    so to speak.
    HELP!!

Trashing preferences did the trick, and that app was great. So I was able to get up and running again and get a few more tapes imported. But NOW...
I put in another tape this afternoon, and now when I hit 'capture now' it appears to start the capture, goes for approx. 1 second, then stops and says "searching for media". Nothing I have tried solves this problem. I have powered everything down, unplugged/replugged everything, no help. SO frustrating!
    'Lil help??

  • Fire Wire Control or RS 422 control for capture

I am looking for a DVD player/recorder that can be controlled (via firewire/RS 422) by FCE and FCP for log and capture functions.
Right not I have been HOT Rolling via a Conapus box (ADVC 100)
    Any suggestions

Maybe I should look take video off the DVD via analog method like recording off of betacam SP or other traditional format....
Is there any DVD player/recorder that has RS422 that can be controlled like a standard VTR? Is there any adaptors maybe something via USB that can be converted to control a RS 422
What I am looking for does not have to be frame accurate... just capture.
These may be old school methods... but I believe the quality will be at least as good as capturing a DV or Analog SD video via S-video or even component.

  • Final Cut quits unexpectedly at the end of Capture Now

I've tried searching google and question archives, but I can't tell if anyone is having the same problems as me. I've repaired permissions and verified the disc.
I'm using a new 8-core mac pro (a few months old) with 8 gb of ram. I'm importing from a tape on a Panasonic AG-HVX200. This has happened at least 5 times, where I've captured a tape, and at the end hit "esc" to stop. Instead of putting the new clip in my bin, it instantly quits the program, giving me an error message.
I am able to find the clip afterwards in my capture scratch folder and add it to my project, but it's a hassle.
    So, two questions:
First, anyone have any idea what's wrong?
Second, I've heard the recommendation to log the clip first, then batch capture. As that takes more time, what sort of advantage does it have, besides that it probably won't crash my computer?
This is what the log says. I've compared these crashes to other crashes, and the +662 at the end of this line is consistent when I have this kind of crash, but not other crashes:

If you don't have a Limit set for Capture Now, FCP assumes it may need the entire remainder of the scratch disk and essentially allocates all available drive space for the task.
I'm not sure it is your issue, but it's generally advised to set the limit to a couple of minutes longer than any capture you intend to do.
One reason to Log and Capture, (this is dependent on workflow and needs), is that you become much more aware of what shots that exist on tape and you have an opportunity to more effectively name clips you choose to use and cull out garbage, which saves disk space.
Let us know if trashing prefs helped/didn't help...could be something else.

FCP X?  Then you need to use a different forum...This is the FCP 7 and earlier forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x
FCP 7?  Did it look like it captured normally? Everything go smoothly?  Stop normal?  Did an error occur at any point?  Can you open the file in QT?
In the future...do not rely on ONLY FCP for this task. Get a reputable recorder that can record to ProRes. AJA KiPro, KiPro Mini, Atmos Ninja, Decklink Recorder...lots of options.

  • FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes

Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Just to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

  • Nice discussion on Capture Now (for the Pro's?)

    Hi All,
I want to talk about Capture Now.
Let me first state that I'm a believer in Batch Capture after doing Logging clips.
    But,
I many shows I'm working on will not be captured by me, but by the directors, assistant directors or researchers/editors (not video editors) and camjo's.
Shooting on DVCam there are timecodebreaks in the tapes.
So I write them comments about how to handle the camera to prevent Timecode breaks.
I write them reports about how to do easy setup, System Settings, Proper User Preferences, etc. And I'd like them to Log before capturing. Let tape roll at leat 5 seconds before pressing Capture Now. All reasonable.
Given the available time they capture whole tapes and sometimes provide me with spotlists.
Let's NOT discuss all the above. It's obvious I know how it should be.
Well now I want to have the discussion with you about the difference between Capture Now and Batch Capture concerning tapes with Timecode breaks:
If there are Timecode breaks in a tape and you give an Inpoint at the beginning of the tape. Outpoint at the end. In User Preferences set on Timecode break 'Make New Clip'.
Then, FCP will encounter Timecode breaks. Stops and starts to capture a new clip.
    Now my questions are:
1• Do these captures differ from clips captured with Capture Now? (concerning sync, timecode accuracy, etc.)
2• Is FCP able to recapture those clips in case of data loss? I mean. After a TC break FCP starts to recapture using the preroll time, right? Is that the case in both 'Capture Now' and 'Log and Capture'? Is this preroll enough to do a recapture? Or should one set a longer preroll during the capturing in order to recapture with a normal preroll-time in the case of disk-damage?
I'm asking all this because I'm doubting about the advantage of Log and Capture over Capture Now when it comes to tapes with Timecode breaks.
    Any insight would be appreciated
    Best Regards
    Rienk

1• Do these captures differ from clips captured with Capture Now? (concerning sync, timecode accuracy, etc.)
Nope. As long as you give your footage a reel name, and you have deck control to get timecode, you will be fine and accurate.
2• Is FCP able to recapture those clips in case of data loss?
Sure. Just as long as you give yourself enough PREROLL, or that you don't use footage that is 5 seconds from the start of the clip.
After a TC break FCP starts to recapture using the preroll time, right? Is that the case in both 'Capture Now' and 'Log and Capture'?
Yes...with CAPTURE NOW it will give itself the needed PreRoll if it just continues the capture. LOG AND CAPTURE, you assign the in point so you assign the pre-roll.
Is this preroll enough to do a recapture? Or should one set a longer preroll during the capturing in order to recapture with a normal preroll-time in the case of disk-damage?
If you can, manually set the preroll. But if you do a capture now, stop on TC breaks and then continue, it adds enough.
I do this a lot. Name the initial clip name to be the same as the tape, then capture, and sometimes I get one long clip, sometimes I get it broken up. Then I watch the footage, rename it if needed, or just add descriptions in the OTHER fields, and then edit. CAPTURE NOW is fine when you have TIME OF DAY code...perfect for it. You just need to make sure you have a REEL number, and enough PREROLL.

  • "Waiting for time code" while Capture Now

My Sony DSC-TRV 460 (Hi 8 digital, not HD) camcorder (digital video output activated because the tape is an older, analog) is attached w/firewire. Click File > Capture. The capture window appears and its controls do control the camcorder and I can watch the tape w/audio there. According the Help, I set the tape a bit before I want to start, click Play (or spacebar), click Capture Now. This launches a big black window that says Final Cut Express w/Apple logo. At the bottom it says "hit escape to exit," "device must be in VTR mode" and "Waiting for time code." The same camcorder with the same settings brings video into iMovie HD with no problem so I could workaround that way. How to get FCE to do what I want, though?

I've accomplished the task several times with my Sony Digital-8 camera. Since the tape is analog there's no timecode (which iMovie doesn't look for) and you must use the DV Converter setting in easy setup. I think you're right about the on-screen transport controls: you won't have them. (FCE thinks it's just listening to a converter box -- same as if you connected a VCR to the D8's analog ports, assuming the 460 offers that feature.) Try a reboot to clear things out. Turn on the camera then start FCE and check the Easy Setup settings. Use Capture Now and press the 'play' button on the camcorder.

  • Work around for capturing 24p in FCE

I am working on a clients system its a new Mac Power Book Pro running FCE 4.
Shot some HD footage at 24p. I have discovered that FCE does not natively capture 24p. Anyone suggest a good work around? trying to capture at 29.97 the footage stuters pixilates and creates copius amounts of un usable files.

Try using MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer to convert your frame rate and progressive to interlaced.
Just be aware that changing the frame rate is not a great thing to do, as you are likely to lose some visual quality, especially since you are in an NTSC country and will have to go to 29.97 or 60i. (If you were in a PAL country you might get away pretty good converting to 25 fps, which means only 1 additional blended frame in each 24. NTSC won't be as clean.)
You also need to find out exactly how the original video was shot. There are quite a few camcorders that shoot 24p over 30i or 60i, so you may actually have 60i material. It would help a lot to know exactly what make/model camera was used for the source footage.

  • Is FCE or FCP the one for me?

    Hi,
I'm new to the video editing world, and my main reason for getting into it at all is to prepare DVD demo reels of my film score work. All of my source material is QT movies.
I recently assembled just such a reel using iMovie. Got quite the education in basic techniques of assembling footage, adding titles, transitions, etc. But I also quickly realized that I'm going to need a more "pro" program to do this kind of work more quickly and efficiently (also, once in iMovie, the picture quality went into the toilet for some reason). So I'm considering some version or other of FC.
I'm a music composer first and foremost, and aside from the need to generate promotional materials like my demo reel, I can't make it my life's work to learn a whole new skill. But I do know I need a better tool to dot he job. So I'm looking for advice on what the best program would be for me: FCE or FCP.
I'm going to assume (hopefully correctly) that anything I can do in iMovie can be done in some version of FC. So here's a list of what I'd be looking to achieve from FC. Which is best for me, and, are these things possible?
    1. when clips are imported that the picture quality remains identical to the source
    2. ability to mix QT clips at different frame rates (24 fps and 29.97)
    3. have multiple tracks of video and audio
    4. ability to add video clips and lock them to the timeline so that their placement is more or less permanent (unless I decide later to "unlock" them) and, that their position won't be moved or "rippled" when I edit other clips
    5. ability to maintain permanent lock between video and audio extracted from the video file (iMovie isn't predictable in this aspect)
    6. ability to edit audio with a high degree of precision (see proper waveform displays, maybe even a tempo grid?)
Thanks to anyone who can share their thoughts.
    -=iS=-

    Hi Ian,
That link was very helpful. Just one more question... from my original post, "when clips are imported [into the program] that the picture quality remains identical to the source", what feature of FC would indicate that characteristic?
(To be more specific, all of my various footage is the output of various well-known animation houses, and is all top notch in appearance even in QT format. But when those QT's are imported into iMovie the appearance becomes grainy, backgrounds become splotchy and pixelated, and edges become aliased...)
    Cheers!

  • Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?
    HDV 1080i60
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • No longer able to use Capture (only capture now)

I used to be able to capture with the full capture functionality (in Final Cut Express) and now I can only 'capture now'. I have not changed any of the system settings.
I confirm my camera (Sony HDR-HC7) is recognised in system profiler and I can also use the full capture (import) functionality in iMovie. But not in FCE.
    Please advise.
    Thanks
    Paul

I think your confusion is caused because FCE and FCP handle HDV differently and therefore have different capture windows.
For normal DV they are both the same and you get this window:
However, FCE cannot edit HDV natively so it is converted during capture to the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).
To do this, FCE uses a simplified capture window which only permits "Capture Now" like this:-
FCP on the other hand can edit HDV natively so it uses the normal Log and Capture window like this:-
FCE has always used the simplified capture window.
The only way you can get the full window is by upgrading to FCP . . . . . . . . which is a rather expensive way of changing your capture window!

  • Fcp wont capture

on my g5 fcp aborts capture and i get a dialogue box saying that there is a problem with the tape. i have the same problem with multiple tapes from different sources and 2 cameras. fortunately, i have a macbook pro and am not having any problems capturing to it; the same footage from the same cameras. any ideas. never had any issues capturing b4 on the g5
    thanks

Hi! I have the same camera and had (have) the same problem. I am running a PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.4.9. As my computer is brand new, and the only software I even have loaded is FCE HD 3.5, I knew it wasn't a memory problem. I finally got so frustrated that I called the FCE support people. They told me that the Panasonic isn't on the "list" of cameras that work well with FCE. (I had a small heart attack at that point considering I've sunk a considerable amount of $$ into getting a 'good quality' set up to basically make small little movies.)
BUT the good news is that there's a decent work around for this. In the Easy Set Up menu, choose DV-NTSC DV Converter. This will allow you to do a Capture Now, but you won't have any control over the footage, so you'll have to make sub clips later. I've also been experimenting with the DV-NTSC Firewire choice from the Easy Set Up. That will give you control of the footage, but I did have one crash and one "abort due to dropped audio" yesterday. So... Not sure if that's the best way to go.
I'd really love to hear how this works for you and if you've discovered any other work arounds to this problem.

  • Long FCP user considering FCE or FCP on mackbook pro

I've been using FCP on my PowerMacs for years, since version 3. Right now I'm still using FCP 5.1 on my Quad PowerMac G5. I work in broadcast cable and but use my own computer for freelance gigs or personal projects.
I want to buy a new MacBook Pro, and am considering installing the Pro version or having FCE pre-installed.
Is there a side-by-side list of what FCE can't do and FCP can? I consider myself an advanced user of FCP and would be annoyed if I needed to do something on my laptop that FCE just can't do.
Also does anyone know, if I have Apple CAre and FCE is pre-installed and, say, the hard drive dies and must be replaced, they replace it with FCE pre-installed again at no charge? And will Apple Care try to resolve bugs/errors if FCE is pre-installed?

While I agree with Ian, I'd like to mention a couple of features that I expect FCP pro users might miss in FCE: +Media Manager+ and +Log and Capture+ (about other missing features: Render Manager, probably you can do without, source timecode display, time remap, etc. there are some plugins filling the hole..., etc.). Personally I can easily live without them... but I'm not a pro.
Another point: while you can easily migrate a project from FCE to FCP, you cannot do the reverse: you cannot edit an FCP project in FCE. So having FCP on one Mac and FCE on the other doesn't allow you to switch a project back and forth between Macs.

  • No longer able to mute or change playback output device for capture.

I have no preview button to turn off in my capture window and have instead gone into the FCP preferences to change the playback output device to something other then my Fireface800 IO device, such as the built in output so that what's being captured only comes out the little speaker in the tower.
Thus I am free to work on other stuff. (8 core mac pro, gobs of ram, multitasking has never been a problem, even while capturing HD.)
But as of the latest update (I keep all my apps up to date), capture plays through the System default device no mater what the FCP setting. So with out a mute button for the capture, I'm screwed.
I'm screwed because I have to Mix down an EP while I capture 26 hours of conference footage at the same time. Obviously, I can't mix properly with that chatter playing loudly over it.
Apple said I have to reinstall because there's no preview button and there should be but I am curious if there's any other way (because it's a huge pain in the *** and tends to screw up other things) and I would like to know if the way I usually do it is broken for other people, so I know if I can upgrade to the latest version again because it was some goofball problem with the framework that reinstalling fixed or if not because that's a bug in 7.0.3
    1. Choose one audio output (say, Built in Line Output or your default sound card) everywhere that matters in the Final Cut preferences for Audio output, including Audio Playback Output which is what I've been using to switch this for, gosh, years probably just out of habit.
    2. Log and Capture, capture some footage from tape. (I happen to be working with a basic HDV firewire profile.) What device do you hear output from?
    3. Stop capturing... and, if you wish, for good measure, close the capture window.
    4. Go back to FCP preferences, now choose a DIFFERENT audio output, say, Built In Speaker Output.
    5. Try to capture some footage. Is the sound coming out of the built in speaker now?
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO QUICKLY SILENCE THE AUDIO FROM FCP DURING CAPTURE?
    Thank you.
