FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)
Thanks for your time!

Cheers Tom, I think you just saved me a small fortune..
Here's the camera: http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/camcorders/0,39029967,49263047,00.htm

  • Raspberry Pi B+ capture a image from a video cam

    Hello,
is there any way to capture a image from the video camera. I didn't find any media class for video. Nor did I find any Runtime.exec to use a native linux command.
    Did I overseen something?

    Hi Klaus,
There a few ideas in design stage, but nothing solid enough to talk about. And actually it should not have been possible with older ME as it's specifically prohibited by the spec. I mean native methods in Java applications. Of course there may be other means to communicate with native applications, like files, sockets etc. But no direct calls
The date for ME 8.1 GA (General Availability) release is not confirmed yet. But it should happen quite soon, stay tuned

  • Capture from digital video camera

I am so new to this. My computer runs Windows XP Pro.
I am a baseball hitting instructor that uses a digital camera to record swings for training. For the past 18 months I have used video capturing software called RightViewPro that allows my clients to view thier swing while with me only. But now I want to send thier video clips via email or post them Online for customer viewing. RightViewPro does not allow that unless my customers order the $250.00 software as well.
Frame by frame viewing capability is a must. I just downloaded the free version of quicktime 7.6.2.
What must I do when I plug in my USB cord to my laptop? When connecting the USB cable from my camera to my laptop I get a window that gives access to Windows Movie Maker, Nero, and "Take no Action".
I thought after downloading quicktime I would get a command or prompt to open and use "quicktime" as well.
So I clicked on "take no action" and then openned the quicktime link from my desktop. I can not find where to capture video in the quicktime program??
Do I need to purchase and download Quicktime Pro. to capture video from my camera to my computer?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and help me.
    James

Sorry, but QuickTime for Windows cannot capture directly from a camcorder. You'll need to use other software. Did your camera not come with capture/transfer software?

  • HELP NEEDED CAPTURE DV FOOTAGE WITH HDV VIDEO CAMERA

I'm trying to capture DV video footage I've done years ago with my Sony DCR-HC40E PAl into FCP version 6. with my new camera HDV video Sony HDR-HC7 1080.i/mini dv so I can capture it into FCP but it's jerky, An yone know the setting for both the HDv camera and FCP to get the footage perfect as the rginal video.
    Cheers

From the FCP menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DV-PAL > OK. (Use DV PAL Anamorphic if you shot wide screen).
Menu bar once more: Sequence > Settings > Set Sequence Preset > OK.
That camera should detect the DV format tape and playback with the correct settings automatically.
All you ned to do is connect it via FireWire and capture.
For everything else, here's the manual for that camera: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDRHC5.pdf

  • If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this.

If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this. Thank you.

The DVD recorder I'm referring to is one I've use for years. It is not attached to my aging iMac in any way. I simply play the video from my camcorder (mini-dv tape based Canon HV20)  into the DVD recorder and create a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. I can only do minimum editing so what goes in is what I get. This has been fine for creating dupes of the various things I shoot.
If I buy a new iMac (21 inch), I'd like to be able to download the video to the iMac through iMovie, work with it to whatever degree I wish, and burn it to a DVD that can also be played in any DVD player -- or to use as a master to dupe copies.
What I'm understanding from you and others is that this would be possible if Apple had included iDVD in the software that comes with the iMac, or if I purchase the iLife Family Pack, or buy the correct version of Toast. I'm hoping I can persuade Apple to sell me an iMac with iDVD installed.
Essentially I want to move from a basic process of creating DVD copies to the more sophisticated process of creating one from an iMac.
Thank you again for your help and wisdom.

  • Capturing a photo from a video

I am running Adobe Photoshop Element V6.0 on Windows XP.
I have read the Photoshop help on how to capture a photo from a video, but have not successfully done it.
I click on File > Import > Frame from video. When the video is playing, I click on the "Grab Frame" button; the "Frames Captured" button shows that I did capture the frame.
This is where I'm stuck. What is supposed to happen next or what do I do next? The "help" just just shows a big blue arrow pointing down to the bottom of the screen.

    > the video blinks as if it really is capturing the frame
    I've never seen a blink.
I would start by deleting the prefs: Quit the editor, then restart while holding down ctrl+alt+shift. Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Video Transfer from analog video camera

New Mac user here. Anyone know how to transfer video from a video camera(that has 8mm tapes/ with RCA output jacks) to the MacBook. I know I need some type of video capture system or software. I want to ultimately put the 8mm video tapes to DVD'S. I do have a DVD Burner. I think my info should be listed, but if not, here it is. Mac. OS X10.4.8, 2USB Ports, 1 Fire Wire Port. iMovie, iDVD, and other essential programs came with the computer. Thanks for any help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 USB Ports, 1 Fire Wire Port

What you need is a piece of hardware to convert the analog signal to a digital signal that your computer and its software can work with.
    There are some available here:

There are probably some others but this is the ony brand I can think of off hand.

  • Resource Info for new Digital Video Camera.

    Hello.
Can anyone suggest a good resouce/magazine/website to research digital video cameras?
I have used the same Sony DCR TRV120 for the past nine years. It ran out of steam. Mostly used it for family, nature and even spots for a local hokie TV station. Time for a new camera to use with FCE. And I have no clue where to begin researching.
    Thank you.

Well l will ask this another way.
I'm in the market for a prosumer camera.
I want to video both SD (NTSC) and HDV.
If I went with a camera that _did not record_ in NTSC but rather 1080i or whatever, would it be possible to convert the video to NTSC in FCE? I do lots of family videos etc. Not everyone has an HDTV & widescreen at this time.

  • Digital Video Camera with USB connection

If anyone can help me please let me know. I own a Sony Digital Video Camera that's 3 years old. It connects to my iMAC through a USB port. I can not figure out how to load my videos to iMovie. Is this camera too old? When I connect the USB port nothing happens; nothing appears on my desktop.

    George,
i'm not sure if you can download Image Capture from the Apple Website separately or if it comes as a total download of a specific version of OSX. If you have the original system discs that came with your computer, maybe that would have it, or worst case, an option to "Restore Software." Since you camera records to a DVD, you have another option: Do a Google search for MPEG Streamclip and download it (free). Basically, MPEG Streamclip will convert the files on the DVD back to DV files for editing in iMovie. I don't have any first-hand experience with a DVD camera, so you might also need to download Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple's site) if the video on your DVDs is in MPEG-2 format. Come to think of it, I downloaded some MPEG movies from my digital still camera (it takes simple movies) using Image Capture and I still needed to use both MPEG Streamclip and the Apple Component to get it into iMovie, so maybe skip Image Capture and go for these two programs. I know it should be easier to do than this, but unfortunately getting video back off of a DVD is not what Apple wanted you to do. They setup their movie edit programs to accept DV files. The movies on a DVD are already highly compressed, so you actually need to reverse the process and get these compressed movies back to DV. Most PC computers allow, and even suggest, that you import MPEG movies for editing, but that is toally backwards. That explains why the PC discussion boards are filled with toally frustrated and confused people. Most PC computers still don't come with Firewire. They just don't get it.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

What type of digital video camera (DVD, HD or miniDV) should I buy to have the least trouble importing and editing my footage in iMovie????

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.
