FCE project to DVD and to actual film for film festivals

I'm almost done with a documentary around 1 hour in length. I want to enter it in a few film festivals. Some require DVD format, another needs an actual film copy of it after submission (if it gets in). I'm also trying to get use of a movie theatre to show a private screening of it when finished.
Here's the question. Will everything be messed up because FCE uses 30 frames per second and film uses 24 fps? Can the transfer be made from a DVD itself or what steps do I need to take to have a good quality copy of a DVD and film too.
I've just learned FCE for this project and haven't output anything yet. Only have experience with iMovie to iDVD or using Toast to burn DVD of past projects.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Anne Z

The film will cost you around $20000 and if you think now about this issue - that is kind of very late in the game. If you need help look here:

  • Panic-can't move FCE project to DVD

Help. I have completed a FCE sequence, saved it, but when I attempt to export it to a quicktime self-contained movie I get an "General error #34" Message. The original video is from a Flip camera in the AVI format. I used Streamclip to convert the footage to a QT movie then imported to FCE and edited with no problem. But I cannot get it to export. Must have a DVD by tonight for party. Help.

Does Sequence>Render All have Full checked on? Have you rendered everything in the sequence? Did you mixdown the audio? What are the specifications of the media that's in the timeline?

  • Recommendations for an External Hardrive to burn AE and PrPro projects to DVD and/or BluRay

Needed for a Retina display Macbook. Would be using this external drive to export and burn 10, 30, 60, and 90 minute projects.  Reliability is key.  Would love to export directly to DVD.
Looked at this drive, but cannot find evidence that it worked well with Adobe software: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AO1XFM0/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk

  • Convert DVD and other video files for playback on  iPhone, iPod, PSP, etc.

So, how are your holidays going? Or, if you're reading this on the weekend, how'd they go? Watching various sorts of DVD movies and videos is a better idea for a pastime during your free time. To make your holiday be more colorful with movies, I prefer to recommend an application to help you guys deal with different kinds of video resources, no matter the DVD files or footages shot by camcorders, or videos in formats of FLV, AVI, MKV, etc., in a word, the converted videos will be supported by whatever portable devices you have, including PSP, iPod Classic, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPhone (3G), iPhone, Zune, Zune 2, Blackberry, Nokia, Creative Zen, Sony Walkman, iRiver PMP, Archos, PS3, Apple TV, Xbox, iPAQ, Pocket PC, Mobile Phone, etc. The software is Pavtube Video DVD Converter Ultimate, which combines DVD ripper and Video Converter together, and enables you to edit and convert any DVD, video, audio and image files to other popular formats including MP4, 3GP, FLV, MPEG-4, AVI, MPG, MOV, 3G2, VOB, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A with super fast conversion speed and excellent image and sound quality.
The detailed user guide will be shown in the following part:
Step 1: Add video and DVD file
You are allowed to add videos to this program via clicking "Add Video", and add DVD files to it via clicking "Load DVD". DVD files can be loaded in three ways: "Load DVD ROM", "Load DVD Folder", and "Load ISO/IFO".
Step 2: Select output format and set destination folder
Videos and DVD files can be added to this program at the same time, after that, you can click the drop-down list of "Format" to select an output format for your portable devices. The format profile provides you with formats for iPod, iPhone, PSP, PS3, BlackBerry, etc. Meanwhile, you can click the folder icon at the end of "Output" to decide where to save the output files. Moreover, if you want to combine multiple files to be a single file, you can tick "Merge into one file".
    Step 3: Set advanced settings
If you have the needs of adjusting video and audio parameters to make good control of the output file quality and size, you can click "Settings" button to do it, and all the options like codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, audio channel, etc. are changeable on the following window.
    Step 4: Start conversion
As soon as the above steps are finished, you can click "Convert" button to start conversion, the following ripping window will show you clearly about all the conversion info. After finished, you are able to find out the output files via clicking "Open" button.

We're not supposed to talk about DVD conversion according to the terms of service ...
So I'll assume these VOB files are from your HOME MOVIE DVDs you burned yourself and suggest the Videora iPod Classic Video Converter.
    http://www.videora.com/
It's a really nice program that converts not only your HOME MOVIE DVD VOB files, but AVI, MPEG, and others. You can set the CPU usage from high to low with five settings, it has a queue which you can add multiple files to, and it will minimize to the taskbar for compact convenience. There are other Windows programs that do much the same, but I prefer Videora. Oh ... and it's freeware!!

  • 2 complete FCE projects, files moved or missing, and memory full----help!

    I have a
    MacBook Pro version 10.4.10
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    and purchased the FCE HD.
After completing FCE projects-exporting to iMovie-sharing it over to iDVD-and burn to DVD, I was and is still in a blur from what happens next.
When I tried to create another FCE project, it said low disc space, so I purchased a 160GB Seagate, and attempted to copy the finished FCE projects into the Seagate, but when I try and open the project so I'm certain if I need to go back and edit or burn another DVD, it will be there, then it says there are files missing, or error code 1309.
I then got nervous, read through the FCE .pdf for assistance, started moving files around, trying to copy whatever over to the external. Now, when I try and open the existing project, I can't
I may be over cautious, but because of it, I've used up all my memory. Now, I can't open the projects because I've moved the files around.
Right now, I am at a halt. Can anyone help me please, is there a way for me to reorganize my files so that I can open my existing FCE project as the final product, and then archive and move to the external drive, and still be able to open, edit, and burn again? I'm trying to clear the memory from harddrive so I can work on add'l FCE projects.
When I check Disk Utility for my Macintosh HD, the capacity is 148.7GB, and my available is 479.7 MB.
The 160GB Seagate's capacity is 149.0 GB, and the available is 93.0GB.
    Thank you for any assistance.

When you purchased the Seagate, did you format it Mac OS Extended?
    -Go into Disk Utility
    -Select the disk
-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:
-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.

  • CS6 Error Message When Burning a Blu Ray Project to DVD

    Hi,
I'm trying to burn a Blu Ray project to DVD and I'm getting this message when I try to build the project:
The project is an excerpt from a larger one and contains only 2 video files and no menus. However it's particularly worrying because the project from which this is an excerpt is large and complex. I have created it as a Blu Ray project but my final deliverable is DVD. I really don't want to have to rebuild as a DVD project because it took half a day to link up all of the menus and chapters.
Is there something I need to do in my encode settings?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your reply John.
It's extremely frustrating that this is the case. I'd have started with a DVD project in the first place had I not read this: http://helpx.adobe.com/encore/using/building-finished-project.html , specifically the following excerpt:
"You can build the same project to DVD and Blu‑ray formats no matter which format you select in the New Project or Project Settings dialog box. Encore makes the appropriate adjustments to transcode the elements to the correct format."
Reading that gave me the confidence to go ahead and build as a Blu Ray. I now have to find another half day to rebuild the project as a DVD.
    Thanks again for the information.

  • Outputting a finished FCPX film to Vimeo, DVD and .mov

I have just finished editing a film and now need to get a DVD copy for sublitting to the film festivals, and a .mov file for uploading to Vimeo and also for putting on my website.
I created a .mov file by going to the Share menu and choosing Export media. That gave me a 2.5gb file [for a 3min film] and the quality seemed great. I then also used the Share menu and chose the DVD option. The quality of this was not great though and it gave me a very soft image.
Would I be better off using something like Compressor to make a DVD and then also being able to create different size .mov files for things like VImeo or should I just burn my existing .mov file with Toast?
If I use Toast [or Compressor] can I create a region 0 DVD as that is what a lot of the film festivals seem to want submitted?
Sorry if these are all stupid or obvious questions.
    Mark

It sounds like your project is HD. A DVD is SD, so you lose detail, which is the softness you are seeing. Going from HD to SD can look a little better if you use anamorphic rather than letterboxing to deal with the aspect ratio.
Compressor has a very high-quality resizing option (frame controls ON, best quality) which can make the result look better.
Although Compressor will produce the correct codec and file type to use in a DVD, it will not combine them to make the actual DVD. Since the region code is part of the DVD authoring process, Compressor has no effect on region.
Toast can both compress and author, or you can just use Toast to make the DVD from the Compressor files. Toast makes DVDs playable in all Regions, which is essentially the same as region-free.
You can also make the DVD directly from within FCX, but there are fewer options than Toast:

  • Do I need original fce project to create dvd if I have a quicktime version

    Hi,
Need to free up space. I finished a project in FCE and exported it as a quicktime movie. I am ready to make a dvd and need to clear up some space.
Can I delete the original project and still be able to create the dvd from the quicktime movie?
    ...feeling kinda loopy!
    Beth K

When you export from FCE and select QuickTime Movie, there is a checkbox that says "Make Movie Self Contained".
If it was checked at the time you exported your QT movie, then your movie is self contained. The resulting QT file will take quite some time to create and be rather large - at the rate of about 13GB per hour of movie.
If you uncheck that box, FCE will export what's called a QuickTime Reference Movie, and it will be created very quickly, often in less than 1-2 minutes. QT Ref Movies are also generally quite small - the largest one I've had so far is about 1GB and that was for a 3-hour movie with a fair number of title effects & multiple video tracks.

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • Ripping dvd and importing it into an hd 1080 60i project

So ive recieved a dvd and im trying to use handbrake to rip it and import it into my hd 1080 60i project. Ive tried doing either an avi or mpg4 files with different frame rates but still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're trying to import it into FCE, it needs to be DV/(HDV), not AVI or MPEG4. Try using MPEG Streamclip + the QT MPEG2 Playback Component. Handbrake isn't going to get you where you need to go.
