FCE suddenly dosen't recognize camera?

OK, story time.
I use FCE for about 4-5 months out of the year, all in sequence, when im working on yearly project. It's time for that project to start up again and i tried downloading footage into it to send off some quick clips of what was shot. I have gotten a brand new Canon XL2 and used it to shoot this year's project.
I hooked up the camera to a TV using composite cables to find what i wanted on a couple of the tapes. I got the tapes into position, got out the firewire cable, hooked it up to the computer, and it basically locked the computer up when I went to start up FCE. Unplugged the firewire, re-started the computer, and tried again. This time firing up FCE first and waiting until the prompt comes up to check for devices. It came up, I plugged in the cam, same result. This time however i just unplugged the camera from the computer, and FCE continued to boot up like I had no camera attached (which i didn't at the time). So I plugged the camera back in, tried file>capture, and still... same thing... spinning pinwheel that never ends. Unplug the firewire, and everything is back to normal. I also noticed that it didn't really effect the computer, but it seemed to be just the program when the firewire was hooked up.
Restarted the computer several times, unplugged replugged and turned on and off the camera, unhooked all the cables that were hooked up to the tv, completely unhooked the camera from the power source, etc, etc, etc. I tried many little things in hopes it would do something, all resulting the same.
It gets stranger. Since all I needed was 2 quick clips (less then 15 seconds each) I then tried to import the video through imovie, and a similar thing happened. Except the only difference was that having the cable hooked up didn't really lock up the program, but the it just plain didn't recognize that there was a camera attached.
And to top it all off, there was a nearby imac i could try it out on. I fired up imovie on it (no FCE on this comp), plug in the camera... and it worked flawlessly.
I really have no idea what could have happend to my computer inbetween now and when I last used FCE to cause this (which would have been, maybe march?). It makes me think that something went haywire with downloading video onto the computer as a whole, no matter the program. I have used the exact same firewire cable to import video onto the computer before, in the same (front) port, just the camera is differnt, but it obviously works on other computer(s).
Im on a power mac dual 2 G5, just updated to 10.4.10, FCE HD v3, and the imovie version was HD 6. The imac was running imovie 5 on (i believe) 10.4.10 as well.
Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this or where to even start would be appreciated.

Alas, there is an issue with FCE 3.0 (and earlier version) and Mac OS X 10.4.9.
It seems that 10.4.10 solved it:

Canon's camcorder are prone to capture problem. Be sure to use firewire basic NTSC in easy setup and stay away from daisy chaining camcorder and LaCie external hard drives situation.

IPhoto suddenly won't recognize camera

I've been importing from my camera all day because I'm making a claymation short but it has stopped recognizing it for no apparent reason. It's a jvc everio hd camera, it still shows up in the finder but iphoto doesn't say anything. I haven't changed any of my settings, so I don't understand why it stopped working. image capture doesn't recognize it either. could I imported have too many photos? I don't want to start deleting things until I've finished and the piece is safely on a dvd, just in case something goes awry with imovie.

Additional Information.
On my Mail Accounts setup it was set to "verizon.net" on incoming.
Now it faintly reads, "incoming.yahoo.verizon.net"
This came up automatically .... I did not do it and I cannot change it

Satellite L50-B suddenly didn't recognize any USB devices

My laptop suddenly didn't recognize any USB.
The USB sticks or external hard drive does work on other computers, but not on my laptop.
Only SD-cards are recognized.
I've tried to delete the usb-portals on the control panel, but after restarting my computer the all came back again.
One does keep popping up with an warning that it doesn't work, but when i search for a new program to run it, it can't be found. After deleting it, it comes back with the same warning.
I've also tried to download new drives (chip set utility) but that doesn't work either.
I don't know what else to do.
Can anyone help me so I can have access to my USB-products again on my laptop?

No not even an USB mouse works. I haven't changed any settings at all.
I also haven't installed new OS. My laptop came with Windows 8 and I'm still using that. If i'm correct I have USB 3.0 ports. I have the preinstalled OS.
A friend of mine advised me not to do the system recovery cause usually this does more damage than it recovers anyhting. I've got the laptop for just two months now so I want to keep it as good as possible (obviously though).
So there is no other driver installation I can do to make my laptop recognize usb-devices?
Still so confused over why this happened. One day everything was working just fine, the other day nothing worked anymore...

You could try to use a motion sensor - in a do-it-yourself store you can buy motion sensors that turn on the lights when a burglar approaches the property. Connect this sensor to the remote control of your camera instead of to a light.
Probably you can buy ready-made motion sensitive remote controls, the photographers here will know. You would need this kind of remote control for wildlife photography.

Media Encoder suddenly won't recognize Quicktime files...

Hi there...
I'm on a Mac, and out of the blue, Media Encoder suddenly doesn't recognize Quicktime .mov files. It says this file format is not supported. Which is weird, because it was supporting it just fine this morning! Does anyone know what might be wrong or how to fix this?

Image Capture won't recognize camera under other user log in

Image Capture won't recognize cameras under another other users log in on the same computer even though it works perfectly under the main user log in. Can some body hep me pleeze? What am I doing wrong or how can I let my daughter use her digital camera under her log in?

Hi G-Man,
It's probably something in the Preferences folder; Users/herusername/Library/Preferences. Start by removing com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist and trying again. If that doesn't do it drag the entire Preference folder to the desktop, log out and back in. Launch it again and if it works you can either reset preferences for all System Preferences and apps or drag the preferences files a group at a time back to the new Preference folder in Library and test Image Capture each time. That way you can narrow it down to the one offending preference file.

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Computer recognizes camera, but does not log & capture

I teach in a classroom where we have 23 new iMACs and the new Final Cut Studio. FCP recognizes the Sony miniDV camcorders we have, but some of the computers, although they recognize the camera, will not log and capture. The new iMACs plus the loading of FCP (making an image and transferring it to all the computers) was done by the tech dept. The question: Why does FCP on most of the computers recognize cameras and log and capture, while on others it does not? It was suggested I go to a FCP users group meeting to ask the question. Does anyone out there know? Thanks.

If it's working correctly on some machines and not others, and all installs were identical, then here are a few things to try:
• First, are the FireWire cables good? Test one from a working machine on a non working one.
• Also, are they inserted securely at camera and mac ends?
• Do any of the non working macs have other firewire devices connected to other firewire ports? The iMac has only one firewire bus, even though it has multiple ports, and this can sometimes cause a problem.
• Is everything being turned on and connected in the proper order? Usually it's best to have the firewire cable connected at both ends, and the camera powered on before the mac is started up.
• Check the cameras themselves; in the camera's record in/out menu, it should be set to play out DV, and when the firewire cable is connected, most Sony cams will display a DV in/out message on the LCD screen.
• And, finally, are you using the same Easy Setup for all of the macs/cameras? I'm guessing you would want the NTSC DV setup; this should be chosen before a new project is opened to capture into; are all machines set up the same way?
Sony camcorders generally work pretty well with FCP, so I'm guessing one of the above choices will solve your problem.

IMovie recognizes camera, but no longer the clips

Not anymore.
Since last week iMovie sees the camera, but not the clips. They are there, but not visible in the Import-window.
Not changed anything in the settings.
Has anybody faced a similar issue also? What is the solution?

FCE V4 does not recognize Panasonic SDR-H20 Camera connected via USB

I've just got FCE V4 and connected it to my imac and started using FCE V4. FCE says it cant locate my video camera 'Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)'. I chose DV-NTSC in the Easy Setup because that was the default and I don't know what else to choose. I don't have a firewire cable, just the USB. The camera is recognized okay by iMovie. Does anyone know whether I need to:
1. Get a firewire cable and connect that to the camcorder and imac
2. Choose something other than DV-NTSC in 'Easy Setup'
or if this camera SDR-H20 Video Camera does not work with FCE?

This camera will not work directly with FCE.
FCE needs TAPE cameras shooting DV or HDV.
The only other types of cameras that will work are those shooting AVCHD (High Definition).
You will have to download the video files and convert them to DV with something like MPEG Streamclip:-

IMac will suddenly not recognize camera

I have a Canon PowerShot A510 camera from which I have previously downloaded pictures to Canon Image Browser and then to iPhoto. Now the computer will not recognize this camera (I have checked Image Capture and System Profile in the Utilities folder and it is not there). I cannot account for my family's actions -that is, I do not know if they disconnected the camera improperly or if the computer went to sleep with it connected.) The computer will not recognize the camera...
Does that mean
1.either canon image browser or iphoto no longer auto open when you connect the camera,
or
2. the camera no longer appears as a drive mounted on your desktop
If (1), then perhaps a software setting has changed - I have my system set to not open any particular program when my camera is attached.
if (2), then it could be the cable or port.
Your follow on post says the camera works as expected on another machine.
on the second machine - did you use the same cable to connect the camera, or a different cable?
If the same cable was used, then I'd suspect the USB port itself (try using a different one), or a lack of power on the USB bus. (Too many USB devices plugged in - disconnect a few and try again)
