FCE, tape vs hard drive and SLR cameras
i believe I am correct in stating that in the past FCE would not accept video from a video camera that recorded on to a hard drive, only mini DV tape. I have recently read that there has been a change, does anyone know about this? Also is there a distinction in video cameras as there is in still cameras between point and shoots and SLR's thank you joanl
The only hard drive camcorder that FCP supports is the P2 system by Panasonic. I can't say anything for FCE though.
If you are looking for a professional camcorder, look for 3 CCD camcorders. Then look for a manual focus ring. Those two things will probably lead you to some professional camcorders. Some of Panasonic's camcorders have 3 CCDs but are small and don't "look" professional, but the image quality is excellent. It's better to have good image quality than a cool looking camera (although the latter never hurts.)

How to connect external hard drive and DV camera
I have just bought a macbook pro with only one firewire 400 port. My question is, what is the best way to connect up an external hard drive and a DV camera so I can import video to Final Cut. Should I be plugging the camera directly into the external hard drive's firewire port and conecting the hard drive to mac via USB or connecting DV to mac via Firewire and then mac to hard drive via USB? Or does it make no difference!

If the drive does not have two firewire ports, you'll need an Expresscard 34 firewire card to create a second firewire bus. The card goes in the slot on the side of the computer. Hook up either the camera or the drive to it.
The cards can be found online for a reasonable sum of money.
Do not use USB.

Firewire800 hard drive and dv camera problems
Currently I have two Lacie FireWire 400 drives daisy chained together, using the back FireWire 400 port, as well as a Lacie FireWire 800 drive using the back FireWire 800 port. I have a canon dv camera plugged into the front firewire port as well.
When all the drives and the camera are on, and I try to open Final Cut Pro 4.5, the FCP gets hung up - with the spinning wheel of death.
This set up worked fine before the firewire 800 drive was added today.
Any ideas why?Four devices, and one firewire bus.
And you are using the front (problematic) port for your cam.
Anyway, some cameras do not play well with FW 800 devices, usually Canon from what I read. Particularly true with FCP 4.5 and 5.x

Saving data to external hard drive and which camera to buy?
Hi everyone! I'm getting started with my editing and shooting in the next few days and I had a couple questions.
1. If I want to save all my date to an external hard drive, so that it wont take up space on my MacBook Pro, how do I change the pathing so it'll save on the external and not the Macbook.
2. I have 1000 to spend on a camera. I know a 3CCD, mini-dv with an external mic output is best, so what's a good camera considering? The Canon XL2, GL2...? If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

-RoI looked on eBay and saw that you can get a used GL2 for under $1000. I have a GL1 and like it very much. I capture to a second internal HD so I don't have any connection problems. With a MBP I recommend an external drive connected by Firewire as you are planning.
I see on this forum some people have had trouble with Canon cameras on a Firewire port shared with other devices. As a test I tried connecting my GL1 to my external backup drive through a second Firewire connector (I believe that's called daisy chaining) and I had no problem with FCE recognizing my camera by switching to the "Basic" Easy Set Up setting.
In the System Settings you can set where you want to save your files. -
Emac Hard Drive and Cleaning Question
Hello to all,
Sorry for all the crazy questions about this emac. I have never owned a mac before so this is a learning experience as I go and I hope no one minds the questions.
Here is my latest question. I needed a new hard drive and it came out really easy. Within in about 20 minutes I had the hard drive out and in my hands. Wasn't as tough as I read. Anyway, my quesition is, I don't have the original software that came with the mac but I can get that from apple.
If I would put a new hard drive in would I still need the original software for the mac or would I get a new disc with the hard drive that would now be the software for this mac?
Also, I noticed on the green pc board that there is some slight corrosion around some of the solder points and things. Could I use a electronic contact cleaner on this to clean it up? Or is there anyway to clean it up safely without messing up the board. The mac runs but wanted to clean it up.

XrayApple does not bundle Mac OS X with any replacement hard drives; you must purchase OS X (or contact Apple for a replacement set of the eMac's original discs) separately. You can then boot from the OS X Install disc, launch Disk Utility from the Installer/Utilities menu, and use Disk Utility to format (and if desired, partition) the hard drive as Mac OS X Extended.
I've not heard of corrosion internal to the eMac. Do you know if the Mac was kept in an unusually humid or wet environment, such as a beach house? While contact cleaner itself should be harmless if it's dried thoroughly before re-powering the computer, I'd be reluctant to do any sorrt of scrubbing, even light pressure with a cotten swab, on the wires on the logic board. -
I have adobe CS6 on my old hard drive and i wish to transfer it over to my new hard drive. I no longer have the disc which it came on. How do I do this? also i have only ever put a single copy on a laptop and it is alowed 2........if that matters.

Can I use a plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak? I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity on the iPad to have everything on that I'd like for the kids.
So basically I want a hard drive with X amount of films etc on. Can I then watch them on my iPad?

I just replaced my hard drive due to failure in my Mac mini. I am trying to load the Snow Leppard OS from the DVD's that came with the unit. Is there a step-by-step procedure somewhere that would help me? This is my first problem with my first Mac. I thought getting to the hard drive and changing it would be the hard part but I made it through that with little trouble. My lack of software experience on the Mac is really slowing me down. I believe I'm not making the right choices in the Disk Utility program.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Prep the new drive:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Upon completion quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X. When the installation has completed you can proceed to restore your data from your backups. If you have an existing backup from Time Machine or another hard drive then upon completing the Setup Assistant you will have an option to restore from another Mac, a TM backup, or another drive. Use the appropriate option. -
Daisy chaining external hard drives and a video camera from a single firewire 800 port on my imac
I have only a single firewire 800 port on my imac and want to know if I can daisy chain two external hard drives and my video camera, please? If not is there another solution using USB 2?
Are the external HDs self powered or powered by the FW port? If they are self powered there should not be a problem. If they are port powered they may put a strain on the port's power output but I'n not positive on that.

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
Then, install OS X. -

It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

If you are trying to recover photo stream photos, they are only held in iCloud for 30 days. All you would be able ro recover is photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
If you have an iOS device that still has the photo stream photos one it, you can save them to the camera roll by opening the my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll. Once in the camera roll, they can be imported to iPhoto on your Mac as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083. -
My teacher today, totally messed up my head.
He seas that camcorders who record on tape are better than hard drive.
Than I thought: "How the heck can you get HD on tape?"
He showed some HD tapes. OK.
I remembered that using hard drive cam I had to convert to start edit in FCP.

Does someone even makes tape camcorders? (Mostly home use t.i.)

Hope you get the idea!HD to tape is QUITE normal. HD was shot on tape far before tapeless HD came along. DVCPRO HD, HDCAM, HDCAM SR...then HDV. Tapeless is a NEW format.
Which is better? Depends on the format. There are roughly two dozen or so HD formats. Some tape, some tapeless. Some tape formats are better than tapeless formats, and some tapeless formats are better than tape formats. HDCAM SR, great tape format that blows away AVCHD and DVCPRO HD. But then AVCIntra (tapeless) rivals it, and RED (tapeless) kills it.
HDV is the only consumer, and even PROSUMER, HD tape format. DVCPRO HD would be the next step, but those cameras go for $45,000-$85,000. But DVCPRO HD tapeless starts at $5300.
Which hard drive camcorders have the format so you don't have to convert it to use FCP, because converting messes up the quality.
Where did you hear that? Your teachers? If so...they stink. Converting does nothing of the sort. But the tapeless formats that require no conversion are XDCAM EX, DVCPRO HD, AVCIntra (arguable)... JVC is the only camera to offer direct to QT recording for drag and drop into FCP.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
3. Go to
Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.

I erased my hard drive and now my Macbook pro won't boot
I bought a new macbook pro the other day, so I decided to erase the hard drive on my 2010 Macbook pro and reinstall my OS cleanly. I erased the hard drive and tried an internet recovery. It downloaded the recovery and would not boot. Tried resetting everything you could name of and it doesn't help. Can't get anywhere with command R, it just freezes. Safe mode won't boot. Command V, eventually ends with an error saying to return to old smc. I pulled the hard drive out and put it in another mac from about the same year and through internet recovery, actually loaded OS Lion back on it. I put it back in the problem mac, and it just freezes at the apple logo and spinning wheel. Can't understand why erasing the hard drive would effect any hardware, but maybe it messed with logic board somehow? I've now tried using the Recovery partition, since OS Lion was loaded on the drive, but it freezes there as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
