FCE to Disk to FCE

From home movies, I created an FCE project, burnt a DVD, and discarded all supporting files and sources. (Boo!) Now I need to get the project back into FCE. I used MacTheRipper which generated a bunch of VOB, IFO, and BUP files. Now what? How to get the project back into FCE? Thanks

Hi
Answer to iMovie but will work with FCE(P too.
*DVD back for futhur editing*
A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a trayloaded DVD burner/reader
B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 can import from DVD (homemade without copyprotection)

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in
recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
• DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
• Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
• Cinematize >60$
• Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
• Toast 6/7/8/9/10 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
• connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
• Drop2DV (free) a free tool claiming to convert DVDs into dv-stream...
• Use iSquint for your conversions : www.iSquint.org

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm
              PLAYLIST
                   .MPL file
              STREAM
                   .MTS files
    AVF_INFO
         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
    Thank you in advance

  • Final Cut Express not opening, error says final FCE disks are missing.

    Hi there,
Recently I got a WD Fire Wire 800 Hard drive for christmas so I could move all of my final cut projects over to the HD.
When I moved my final cut express documents including all of the folders it now says this error.
    To preserve the integrity of the data used by final cut express, it is necessary to ensure the existence of the following paths;
    - My HDD Chris is missing
Then it gives me the option to reset scratch disks, check again or quit.
So I'm not sure what I do.
Should I simply move back all the folders and documents that I moved to my hard drive (btw I tried this but it still gave the same error message). I have deleted final cut express 4.1 and re installed 4.0 to see if it works but it didn't and has the same error message.
    Any tips would be helpful.
    Chees, Chris.

You moved the software? You can't do that. That's fatal. The software must be on the system drive as it requires system resources. Move the application called Final Cut Express back into the top level of the Applications folder. Do it move it, rename it, or put it inside a folder.
Do not assign the scratch disk to a folder anywhere. If you want the scratch disk to be on your external drive select the top level of the external drive. FCE will create the folders it needs in that location.
    Hi,
When you say move the application final cut express into the application folder.
Do you mean move my folder of final cut express that I moved onto my HDD?
If so it's copying the 20GB folder as I speak. Hopefully fixes this frustrating problem..
    Cheers, Chris.

  • Trying to install final cut express keep getting error message "FCE" can't install on this disk.  A newer version of this software already exists on this disk.  Have remove all FCE elements with no success.

  • Does a Gbit ethernet disk work with FCE

I am new to video editing and now looking for an external harddisk.
What I have read here a Firewire drive is better than USB-2.
I could not find any information if FCE 4 will work with a network drive, such as the LaCie Ethernet Disk 500GB - with Gigabit Ethernet,
In theory the Gbit connection is faster than FW or USB2.
    Anyone experience?
    thanks, 1000Zen

Network Attached Storage drives (NAS) are better suited to non-realtime file-sharing systems.
If you really, really want to head down this path then things get much more tricky (assuming you have more than one network device, i.e. not NAS directly connected to your MAC via ethernet cable) if you wish to record/play directly to NAS as the network traffic needs to properly prioritised and configured to prevent web browsers, email, software downloads, itunes, etc from interfering.
Not to mention networks are far more painful to diagnose technical issues, particularly at the protocol levels.
As Tom says go with Firewire, much less work is required and much easier to diagnose issues.

  • Best workflow from FCE 4.0 timeline to Blu Ray disk?

I'm almost done creating a video in FCE4.0.1 and I'm wondering what everyone's experience is in producing a quality blu Ray disk on the Mac.
I'm using an iMac I7 and FCE 4. I will be buying an external blu Ray writer (suggestions?) and I'm assuming I'll need Toast and the blu Ray plug in to create the disk.
Perhaps not. I know others have already fought this bleeding edge battle so I'm hoping I can learn from your experiences.
I'm looking to output 720P quality. So, suggestions? Ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    DC

I have had satisfactory results burning short Blu-ray quality movies using Toast and standard DVDs. I export my work from FCE to QuickTime then import it into Toast. I select the Blu-ray video option (top left) and also select the standard DVD (bottom right). The results are quite good viewed on a HD TV using a Blu-ray disc player. It takes a long time to burn and patience is required, but I have compared the Blu-ray video to DVDs burned in the normal manner, and the results are pretty amazing. This process does not require an external Blu-ray writer, but it will only work for short videos of 20 minutes or so.

  • FCE Express is writing render files to startup disk not external hard drive

    Hi
I'm using FCE Express HD 3.5.1, with a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB memory.
I'm using a Lacie big disk extreme as my scratch disk, and FCE is set up to write all render files to this. However, I noticed that my startup disk was becoming full and realised that FCE is writing render files to the startup disk not the external hard drive.
    I've quit, shut down, etc...
Any ideas what is going on?
    Many thanks
    Helen

Whenever FCE is behaving strangely, one thing to try is trashing the preferences. Here's how:

  • FCE won't launch without external disk

I've just noticed that FCE 4.0.1 won't launch unless I have my external disk attached.
The external is set up as the primary scratch disk, and first place for 'search folders'. My MBP is designated as the secondary scratch (video capture only) and second for search folders.
FCE launches immediately with the external attached. Without it, the icon bounces once in the dock, no splash screen appears and soon after the app is shown (in the Force Quit) window as not responding.
Can you tell me what do I need to change to allow FCE simply to open, without the external?

As a test, I deleted the external drive as the nominated scratch disk, and set the MBP as scratch instead.
    FCE then opens straightaway.
But that's not the set up I want to have. I'd like the external to store all the media/render files but still be able to launch FCE on the MBP without the scratch in case anything goes awry with the external.
Any ideas what's happening at the moment, and how to fix it?

  • Scratch disk FCE

I recently bought a new laptop. I had been capturing my video files on my old laptop to a external hard drive.
Today i received a message that my scratch disk was full. Upon further research it turns out i had not made the external HD the default. I have located the new FCE documents file on my laptop HD.
Do I move the filefolder to the existing file folder external HD.
or go in the FCE system settings and reset the scratch disk location? if so will the program know to move the files?
There are over 30 hours of video captured here.
My reference book has nothing on moving files.
    thanks

I am in the middle of a project
I do already have the a older scratch folder on the external hard drive.(made by my old laptop)
This file the same name as my project file on the hard drive of the new laptop.
Do i still need to force FCE to make a new folder?
Or could i use the existing file on the external drive.
    Its all new to me
    Sorry
I have been using capture now. Then sifting through all the footage.

  • Getting my new Sony Handycan DCR-DVD92 mini disk data into FCE

Getting my new Sony Handycan DCR-DVD92 mini disk data into FCE?
The mini disk will not work in the Powerbook G4 slot reader, so I hear, and the software for editing the data runs on the dark side.
I am aware that I could do it OK on the PC and probably burn a regular DVD disk that I could then read into FCE.
However, I would like to leave the PC and the dark side behind and do it all on the Powerbook. Addonics has an external tray firewire reader supposed to work OK on a mac. Is their stuff any good?? This is their Mobile DVD/CDRW 16x52x24x52 Firewire unit. $125.00. Will it really work on my Powerbook?
Assuming it works, can FCE work with the Sony format? Probably not. Is there any software to convert the Sony to FCE's liking?

    Dear Mr. Chroma,
Al, you may have supplied the answer. I do have a DV tape camcorder and perhaps I can dub from the Sony mini-disk to the DV tape. And then go to FCE! Yea!
The Addonics thingey is an external DVD drive with a firewire link and it has a tray for the input. The mini-DVDs cannot be used with the Powerbook DVD slot, but can be read with a tray drive.
Thus, I could read the mini-DVD data into the Powerbook. However, I am not sure that I am out of the woods at that point. Maybe I am. I have read that the mini-DVD is in MPEG-2.
I like your suggestion because I already have the DV tape camcorder and can find out if the data is compatible with FCE without spending more money.
I do not believe that there will be any analogue to digital conversion. Everything is digital all the way. The results when playing the mini-DVD from my camcorder seem to be very good, according to the Amazon reviews. And, Wikipedia says that MPEG-2, with some modifications, is also the coding format used by standard commercial DVD movies.
However, the proof will be in the pudding.
I do not have FCE yet. It is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I am just doing a lot of homework right now.
    Thanks again.

  • FCE can't see my FCE files on my scratch disk

I have about 2500 feet of Super 8 film footage that was telecined to 2 mini DV cassettes. I transfered the cassettes to a firewire scratch drive where they sit, with .fcp extentions. I'm trying to teach myself FCE4 using Tom Wolsky's book, FCE4 editing workshop and doing well. I started at page one and now I'm ready to start working on my existing footage -- except when I try to open my files from the scratch disk, the file names are grayed out. And if I do get them imported by selecting 'all files' they are offline. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Katierose

It's old Super 8 film transferred to MiniDV tape, which I then captured onto my external firewire drive attached to my Mac Pro. I had a One to One appointment at my local Apple Store to get a start on the editing, so took the scratch drive and my laptop (MacBook Pro0. Now I'm back on the Mac Pro.
Yes, the two .mov files are one for each tape and they are indeed about 13GB.
For the most part, they are edited movies strung together on the long MiniDV tapes and what I want to do is separate them out to individual projects and if possible, put a soundtrack on them -- music and/or v.o.
When I looked at the .fcp files at the Apple Store, they were fine on the laptop, and what I needed to do was simply separate them. I got some good instruction but the program was pretty overwhelming to me for one hour in the midst of shoppers and a time limit. Then I had to let everything sit for several months while I completed another project, and now I'm going back to them having forgotten most of it. And I really want to learn FCE as I love editing. In the interim I've bought a Canon HV30 (which I now have read has issues with FCE), which I haven't even used yet, but will want to shoot some new footage I can then edit.
So the immediate thing is to get the transferred movies into separate projects, and then go out and play with the HV30.
I truly appreciate your help and advice.

  • Can FCE 4 import directly from Panasonic Hard Disk Drive camcorder

I have FCE 3.5, and to import from my Panasonic SDR-H18 hard disk drive camcorder I need to convert from MPEG-4 to DV using MPEG Streamclip.
Can I import video directly from my Panasonic via a USB port to FCE 4, reading MPEG-4 without converting to DV.

FCE can only capture via FireWire.
FCE 4 will only capture DV and AVCHD. It won't capture the MPEG formats used by standard definition HDD and DVD cameras.

  • FCE export to disk - file big! help

    Hi there friends...
Ok, I have completed/exported my editing on FCE but my 1 hour 13min video comes in as 12 gig to the quality i want.
How can i compress it to a 4.7g dvd disk??
    Thank you

    I'll contribute a few more tips ...
Before you export your final movie, do the following. This will ensure all video is rendered and your audio is also prepped for exporting:
*Sequence > Render All > Both* and
*Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown*
Then, when you export to QuickTime Movie, UNcheck the option called "Make Movie Self-Contained." This will give you a relatively small file that will export quickly. Import it into iDVD the same as you would any self-contained QuickTime file. Doing this will greatly speed up the export from FCE and does not alter the quality of your movie.
If you have placed chapter markers in your Sequence, when you export to QuickTime Movie, be sure to select the option *Include > Chapter Markers.* Also, in *iDVD Preferences >Movies*, select *Create Chapter Submenus* before you import the file you exported from FCE.
    Also, in *iDVD Preferences > Projects > Encoding,* select +High Quality+ or +Professional Quality.+

  • LiveType in FCE 4 - no extra data disks

    Hi,
I noticed in the FCE 4.0 packaging that the 2 Livetype data DVD's are not included. Just fyi... There is about 500 MB of extra LiveType stuff you can install on the FCE 4.0 install DVD, but there was also this same option on the FCE 3.5 install DVD. Am I missing something or did Apple skimp on the LiveType data with FCE 4.0?
    Mace

    tonyoppenheim wrote:
No you're not missing anything. It appears that the large LiveType Media collection only comes with FCP now.
I think they lowered the price of FCE from $299 to $199 (for a new license) but I think the things they left out (Soundtrack, Soundtrack Loops, & 8 gigs of LiveType Media) were worth more than the $100 they took off the price.
Is it actually printed anywhere that the Livetype with FCP is different from the Livetype with FCE? For example, did they change the name to Livetype Pro or anything? I've looked and can't find anything.
I definitely agree...they lowered the price $100 and took $200 of features out. It's the first time I've ever felt a lack of value from an Apple Product.

  • EMac and FCE using an external firewire hard drive as a Scratch Disk

I am about to purchase a new hard drive for use with FCE as a scratch disc.
I am looking for people who are "actually" using an external firewire hard drive as a scratch disc with FCE on an eMac.
I am interested in the following info.
    1. What Make, Model, size HD are you using?
    2. What rpm speed and cache size?
    3. Any problems? Crashed HD's? Working good?
    4. Do you have any other firewire devices plugged into your eMac?
I blew up 3 eMacs last year. Apple could not figure it out or anyone else.
I was using a Lacie P3 250/8mb firewire drive as a scratch disc.
    Thanks in advance.
    eMac 1.25ghz/1gb RAM/160gb HD/Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    1. What Make, Model, size HD are you using?
I have two LaCie Porsche drives, one 160 GB and another 250 GB (more like 159 GB and 233 GB in actuality).
    2. What rpm speed and cache size?
They're both 5400 RPM if memory serves me. The 160 drive has 2 MB cache and the 250 has 8 MB cache.
    3. Any problems? Crashed HD's? Working good?
The 160 GB drive caused me some problems, but I'm chalking most of that up to a bad FireWire cable. LaCie replaced the cable for free, and I haven't had any significant problems.
    4. Do you have any other firewire devices plugged into your eMac?
Since I've got a 15" PowerBook, I'm limited to 1 Firewire bus, so the two drives, a LaCie DVD burner, and my Sony Handicam are all daisy-chained together. Having the Handicam on the bus tends to slow things down, but I can certainly capture to the drives with no problems. If I'm doing a lot of editing, though, I'll unplug the camera to speed up the bus.
I use the 160 GB drive primarily for backup, storing finished projects, and storing stock footage. The 250 GB drive is used solely for video capture and render.
The only thing I might caution you with is that the LaCie Porsche drives are rather picky about how they get turned on and plugged into the FireWire bus. You need to plug the power in, turn them on, and THEN plug in FireWire -- it won't work if you have FireWire plugged in when you turn them on. It's not a big issue, as long as you're aware of it. (It could be that my PowerBook is a little wonky, too.)
