FCE to produce movies, but must build DVD elsewhere?

iDVD wasn't upgraded in the 2009 iLife series, and I've found it disappointing in that it doesn't give a lot of freedom for DVD Authoring, mainly because it is so template driven and doesn't offer a blank slate for one to start with and build on top of.
From FCE once can create only the videos to be added to a DVD build in a separate DVD Authoring tool, right? FCE doesn't have any DVD Authoring capabilities itself, so is there better DVD Authoring software than iDVD that FCE users often prefer?
Thanks,
Rich
Context (repeated for a number of questions about FCE I'm asking separately): Trying to escape the Windoze world where I've been using ProShow Gold to make still images (and video) slideshows somewhat easily, I'm thinking I'll be fine with the "more work" to build slideshows in FCE, and would enjoy using the increased power of the program eventually for working more with video. Already hip to the Tom Wolsky posts and links that look great for how to preprocess still images via Photoshop to ready them for FCE, along with lots of other info. Also have looked at all the free Apple web tutorials, as well as the FCE 4 Manual.

and I've found it disappointing in that it doesn't give a lot of freedom for DVD Authoring, mainly >because it is so template driven and doesn't offer a blank slate for one to start with and build on >top of.
That's mostly true. The templates however can have your own material reworked over the top, audio and video. There's is some flexibility so you can loose the canned package look.
The other Mac app to consider is DVD SPro.
It's only available in the FCS package now or you may be able to track an older version down as it was sold as a separate app.

I have a complex project, for commercial proposes.
It's include menu in portuguese and english, audio Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 and subtitles in english, espanish and portuguese.
    The problem:
When I simulate it on DVD studio Pro 4, everything works fine, It looks pretty goog, but after build or format a DVD on my hard drive, I test it on Apple DVD Player, selec menu in english or portuguese and play one interview with the artist, on extras menu. Ok, but if I press menu, then go to the setup menu, and select the spanish or portuguese subtitles, when I go back to the extras menu, and play the interview again, the subtitle is english only.
Somebody help-me, I cheked all the scripts and it's ok, as much that on the simulator, all works fine.
    thx,

2 - Jump Aviso PT (warning screen)
Script PT (sets the menu language to english)
    1 - mov GPRM 1,2
2 - Jump Aviso EN (warning screen)
On the setup menu, I have five buttons that call:
Script AUDIO_5.1 (sets audio to dolby 5.1)
    1 - Set System Stream Au(Audio Stream 1)
    2 - Jump menuconfigpt::button LEG_EN if (GPRM 1 = 1)

    2 - Jump menuroot_en::butextras if (GPRM 1 = 2)

  • I'm trying to download a movie, but I keep getting message error that I have no more room and that I must delete some photos or videos in order to download more movies. How do I delete the videos in order to order more?

I'm trying to purchase and download a movie, but I keep getting message error that I have no space. The error states that I must delete some photos or videos in order to download. I've gone to iPod then edit and deleted some videos, but I'm still getting the message. What is the correct way to delete the videos and should they still be there.

They wont still be there if you delete them, but if you have those same photos on the main computer.

  • How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts?

How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts? Additionally, what does 'File' 'Finalize Project' do?

Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead.

  • I can import (RIP) my music CD's but not my DVD movies. Huh?

All I want is to be able to watch my DVD movies through iTunes/Apple TV on my HDTV. Is that so much to ask for? Apparently so. At least with iTunes (although from a quick Google there are "those we do not speak of" third-party apps that'll do the job). And yet oddly enough it's no problem importing my CD music collection. So what's the difference between the music industry and movie studios copy-right protection in this case and Apple's position?
I've wanted to import my DVD movies for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I thought it would be a simple process. Little did I know, and should have realized after an early try to play a DVD movie in iTunes and the fact that Apple TV would not allow it either (main reason I didn't purchase it when first released). But isn't that the point of it, to play movies? Before the advent of Apple TV and other movie download sites there were DVD's. Or have they forgotten this? It didn't make any sense except greed. That Apple and the movie studios want us to have to repurchase all of our DVD movie collections. But not music CD's?
It's my DVD movie. I paid for it. I own it. I should be able to copy it to my Mac for playback either from iTunes or Apple TV, more so since I no longer have a DVD player. That's the whole point of all this digital technology. All my music and movies,..etc in one place, transportable, streamable. Which brings me back full circle to my question; "Why can I import (rip) my CD music collection into iTunes but not my DVD movies? This is a contradiction.
    < Edited by Host >

I've wanted to import my DVD movies for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I thought it would be a simple process
It would be if the law didn't make it difficult and/or illegal.
So what's the difference between the music industry and movie studios copy-right protection in this case
CDs generally aren't copy protected. Commercial video DVDs are almost all copy protected.
    and Apple's position?
Apple's position is that since breaking the copy protection is illegal, there's nothing they can to vis-a-vis iTunes and the Apple TV. If you want to read up on one company's attempts to come up with software that can import a DVD and the movie industry's reaction, read this:
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2345931,00.asp
    It's my DVD movie.
No, it's not. It's your physical DVD. It's not your movie.
I paid for it. I own it.
No, you don't. You own the physical DVD. You've purchased certain rights to use the content on the DVD.
I should be able to copy it to my Mac for playback either from iTunes or Apple TV, more so since I no longer have a DVD player.
Yes, you should. But the movie industry doesn't want you to do it and as such has gotten legislation written in the US and some other countries that prevent you from legally copying the DVD to any other medium. The answer the movie industry has come up with, though with only limited adoption thus far, is the "digital copy" included with some DVDs.
Bottom line, as has been said many times: US law makes it illegal to break the copy protection on any medium, be it CD, DVD or anything else.
Enough said. There's absolutely nothing Apple can do about this unless and until such time as the law is changed.

  • TS3297 rented movie, but won't download. Keep getting "download error". Does anyone know what's the next step?Is it possible to purge and start over?

Hi all! I rented a movie and it actually partially downloaded but the connection must have not been very good because it never fully downloaded. I actually watched a little of it thinking it would just finish eventually but it never did and now it just keeps trying to download the whole movie again and gives me a "download error. tap to retry" message after about an hour.(I'm back home now and have a great connection) I have tried deleting the video and gone back to the Itunes store to even re-rent the movie but it just says "downloading". Not sure what to do next, it seems to have fallen into a loop that it can't get out of.  I have also tried turning off the Ipad and turning it back on but it doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?? I can't seem to find any help on the support website.

In case anyone is also trying to get their hands on the debug build of InDesign, I'll add some points that are important.
The email address that Roddy Ide gave is a good address that has let me progress nicely. A big thanks to Roddy for the pointer.
However, recent changes at Adobe require that a person join the "Technology Partner Program" in order to get access to the Debug version of InDesign.
This is by invitation only. I'll repeat that because it's important. You can only join the Technology Partner Program if you are invited to join.
Only someone who works at Adobe can invite you.
What this means is that you should talk to your Adobe contact and ask if they would be willing to sponsor you in joining the Technology Partner Program. You can then email [email protected] with the name and contact details of your sponser so that you can join. You'll then be assessed to see if you can join the program or not.
Once you have joined then you be given access to the Debug version of InDesign.

  • Audio drops out of movie but not menu

I have an iMovie that I burned to disc successfully via iDVD. Then, I went back to the movie, made one small text change to a title page, resaved, and tried to burn again. Since then, I have lost the audio every time I try and burn the DVD again.
What's odd is that the movie audio drops out, but the menu audio is still there. Also, when I 'preview' the movie in iDVD, the audio is working just fine. I have five songs in the movie.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much!
(These are iMovie 6 and iDVD 6 btw.)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.1 GHz, 512 MB Memory

After you made the change in iMovie, did iDVD ask you to update the project?
First go to iMovie and "extract audio" This is often a catch-all for some audio issues. Close iMovie.
Then go back to iDVD, open the project - if iDVD asks (and it should) choose "update" Then "delete encoded assets"
Then use "Save as Disk Image". This will do everything but burn your DVD - it will save the encoded project to a .img file. After iDVD is finished encoding, double click on the .img file, and it will mount like a drive. Use the DVD player application (it may launch on its own) to view the image.
If this .img file has good audio, then burn the image with Disk Utility (in your Applications/utiltiies folder - see Disk Utility help for how to burn the .img file)
If this still has audio that drops out, I'd suggest building a new iDVD project with the edited move.

  • Extracting movies or clips from DVDs

Let's say I have a family made DVD and I want to extract a clip from it (either a video or slideshow). I ask this for several reasons: if I want to extract a clip from a previously homemade movie that I then deleted or lost, and to take out clips from actual hollywood movies and save them or just clips to mix with my movies.

I'd have to say it's not hard - just not 'simple'.
It'd help if you'd be specific about the formats you're wanting to produce/work in/deliver/mix with etc.
DVDBackup & quite a few others will get any dvd onto disk... a simple copy will get an unprotected VOB there. A number of tools will read the VOBs, demux to mpeg2 ... (including plenty of 'free' *NIX tools - many with a nice, neat Mac OS X face ..)
From there it's a matter of what format you want or need to work in etc ..MPEG2 to RAW ? DV ?
But, starting from DVD/MPEG2,, transcoding to and mixing with DV , editing, then transcoding to a delivery format is not the best approach - the 'mix' of different sources/formats is likely to be pretty obvious ... unless you TC your DV to same MPEG2 .. then recode back, filtering to match etc..
I appreciate that this is an iMov forum but that doesn't mean iMov is the only - or correct tool - for the job ...
It rather depends on the details .... - please advise if you'd like some help.
    best wishes,

  • Can't Export from FCE to QuickTime Movie w/o recompression

I have problems with choosing the correct settings for export of a FCE video clip to QuickTime Movie. I want the best possible quality (without recompression).
    In the manual it says:
"Exporting a Self-Contained Movie Without Recompressing the Media
If you choose to export a self-contained movie, you have the option to not recompress the media in your clip or sequence. If you deselect the Recompress All Frames option and choose Current Settings from the Setting pop-up menu, Final Cut Express simply copies frames from existing media files into the new file with no recompression."
I can't find that option in FCE 4.01 - is it a mistake in the manual? My source media was captured from miniDV tape and the captured media file has the following formate:
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Color profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Total bit rate: 29,794
My exported file has this format:
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
    Codec: Linear PCM, H.264
    Color Profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total bit rate: 2,151
I have seen this question in the FCE archive and people simply say there is no recompression in FCE Export to QT Movie, but clearly there is since I see the H.264 codec listed in my output file and the bit-rate is a about 1/14th the rate of the original source material. The output file size is also much smaller. What gives. How can I get an unrecompressed file out of FCE so I can send it to a coworker for futher editing with his FCE.

Does anyone else have anything to add to this thread. I'm, sure I'm using Export to QuickTime Movie and not using QuickTime Conversion and from the file specifications I've given above, it is clear that a 14:1 compression took place.

    Double check:
There are only three options in the QuickTime Movie export window.
    1. Include: The Audio and Video, Audio Only or Video Only.
    2. Markers: Select whateve you want or don't want.
    3. The Make Movie Self-Contained selection check box.
    Is this what  you see?
The export will mirror the Sequence or selected part of the Sequence.

  • Animated Gif/movie not following build order

Animated Gif/movies do not build in proper order.
For example, I have an animated clock that is suppose to come in as Build No 29
and run. However, it loads as though it is Build item No 1.
It does run at the proper time in the build.
Must I hide it with color or other tricks. The problem is it shows immediately as the

Never-mind. I have it working properly now.

  • Why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?

I am using iTunes 11.0 and can sync a movie (Miracle on 34th Street) to my new ipod nano 7th gen but when I try a TV Show (a Planet Earth HD episode) or even a brief video clip taken with my camara I am told that such an action is not permitted on this ipod.  So why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?  Thank you.

Before you can sync video files, it must be converted into a format compatible with ipod.  If you can’t sync a video convert it by doing the following:
In iTunes, select the video you want to convert. Do one of the following then sync again after:
    1) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPod or iPhone Version.
    2) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPad or Apple TV Version.
    I hope this works.

  • Can you burn multible movies on one bluray dvd disc with final cut pro

how to burn two completed quick time movies to blu ray dvd with final cut pro? Ive tried but wont play

    Mark,
Welcome to the wild and wacky world of DVD's and Mpeg2!
Here are a few things that might help.
it seems to want everything as a QT. This presents size limitations.
Not really, iDVD simply takes the QT files that you feed it and uses its own compressor to encode them to mpeg2 files. As long as your source material is not over 2 hours iDVD can handle it.
I'm planning to export from fcp using Compressor in the hope of fitting everything onto one disc
You can do this, but you might find it simpler to simply export a QT reference movie from FCP and drag that into DVDSP. DVDSP will then use compressor to create the mpeg2 files that you need. I say this because some find compressor a little intimidating at first. (I know that I still do.)
Now, go find the manuals that came with your software and start reading, DVDSP is a powerful program and the manuals are the best place to start.
    Good luck!

I converted the movie, but no sound
the movie was converted from mpg. to m4v.
    any reason?
btw, to convert 3 minutes of video takes like 30 minutes!

I have started using HandBreak to convert my DVDs.
I am currently using the Linux command line version and wrote a script to mass convert all my DVDs and its doing a really good job and taking about 1/2-3/4 hour to convert 1 DVD.
There are windows and mac versions of the program too.

I was trying to burn a DVD from files in a burn folder. They were pictures from my Nikon camera. I can play videos and movies from the same dvd player.    Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Thanks for your reply:
I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

I may have had a breakthrough in that, after removing several media converter apps, I now seem to have dependable DVD production. I thrashed around and removed a few things before I checked again, but my suspicion is that ffmpeg might be the culprit, (but I don't have time to reinstall it to verify that notion now).
I'm happy if that fixes the problem, but still can't help but feel that it's a program flaw if its able to zone out so silently, without an error message, or even reporting that it's not responding, (but just perpetually idling). That was a frustrating and erie problem that I hope can a least be improved on to the point of crashing with some kind of diagnostic if not surmounting whatever the conflict is. So far, 4 DVDs without a hitch. Yea.
