FCE Transition Problems

randomly FCE will not allow me to add in transitions longer than 1 frame. I add one (any available transition), and it puts it in as 1 frame and won't allow me to change it (the normal default is 1 second). I checked to see if it is clip duration causing the problem, but they are plenty long for a 1 sec trans. In the past when this happened to one of my students, restarting the computer without saving seemed to work. Currently I have 2 students each experiencing that problem, and restarting did no help.

Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE handles transition this way:

  • FCE 4 problem with transitions

I only installed FCE 4 yesterday so I'm probably doing something wrong but..
I have imported .dv files from iMovieHD which seems to be fine (apart for the need to render). If I add any clip to the timeline followed by another clip (both several minutes long) then try to drag a transition to the end of clip 1 or start of clip 2 on the timeline it doesn't let me because it thinks there aren't enough frames to add the transition but there are. If I the drag the second clip to the right leaving a gap between the 2 clips then drag it back again to how it was, I am then allowed to add a transition! I can't make the transition very long though. This seems like a bug, it's very weird anyway and annoying. Could it be some sort of incompatibility with the iMovieHD .dv file?

You need to learn how the application works.

  • Apply Transition problem / pg. 138 FCE 4 Editing Workshop book

I have opened lesson 8 and followed well up through having two sub clips and applied -15 to the first and 15 frames to the second at the join point using the ripple tool. Step 6 on pg. 138 says in conclusion 'apply the transition.' I then drag the transition 'Cross Dissolve' from the Dissolve bin to the edit point between the two clips I have rippled. This is where it falls apart, or nothing happens but a clip of a lady squealing while serving food fades in and cuts abruptly off at the beginning of the second sub-clip. This lady seems out of context with the two scenery shots and worse yet, the timeline does not show the two halves of a pyramid leading into and out of the transition, only a clip of this lady shows up similar to a 'shuffle edit' but with a fade in transition from the end of the first sub-clip and an abrupt end where the second sub-clip starts.
I am thrown for a loop and don't know where to go from here.
Does anyone have a successful application of this transition from the book and DVD that could tell me where I may have gone wrong?
    TIA,
    Ken

The transitions should be applied from the Effects tab next to the Project tab, or from the Effects menu. It sounds as if you're dragged one of the transition samples that I provided on the DVD into the timeline.
I'll try it again, and yes, even though now, with a few trials going back through the process I was able to get the visible pyramid on the timeline and the two sub-clips now visually transition with dissolve from one to the other, there is still the audio 'woo hoo' sound of the lady serving food from what appears to be another unrelated clip. This must be from the transition sample I thought was the cross dissolve effect as it is labeled 'cross dissolve' and is in the effects tab from the Transitions folder I imported for chapter 8. Thank you Tom, I'll bet this works on the next try - I'll use the Effects menu this time.

  • Frustrating transition problem

    Hello All
I'm having an issue I have yet to figure out, I create a lot of slideshow movies with an app called Photo to Movie, render then import into FCE , now when I preview the movie in QT it looks great but, after importing the .mov into FCE, my transitions get screwed up. when the image zooms or movies back, they leave a trail in a sense. almost looks like a time laps...a thin series of lines stemming from the edge of the image.
Any idea why or how I can resolve this frazzling issue, I have on some just cut out the bad transitional lines but, this cuts into my image viewing time .
    Thanks

One day Tom, I pray I'm as good as you are at this..
There is the problem, FTM is set to export at 29.97fps but, QT is showing it to be slower at a rate of 22.49 fps , how can or can I resolve this ?
As for the information it's from both
    Photo to Movie data :
    Compression ; type animation
Motion ; frame rate 29.97 fps
Key frames ; every 24 frames
compressor ; depth millions of colors+, quality medium
    FCE Data
    Vid rate ; 29.97 fps
    data rate ; 6.6mb/sec
    alpha ; straight
    composite ; normal
    Thanks again

  • Transitions problems

I'm a complete tyro and have got to ch. 8 in Tom Wolsky's 'Editing Workshop'. My problems are these:
    (1) I have no effects tab in the browser and can't work out how to get it. The FCE manual is no help.
    (2) When I use the ripple tool to trim the clip, I get no timing window as in fig. 8.6.
    (3) I've got overlays switched on in the Timeline, but see no sprocket holes in the Viewer, but a large 'L' shape bottom left.
I'd really appreciate help with this.

Many thanks. Cmd 5 brought my Effects tab back in the browser.
But I am still at square one with the ripple tool. I follow the instructions to the top of p. 124, and with the scrubber on the edit point between Village 1 and Village 2, click with the Ripple Tool to the left of the edit point and get the picture in fig. 8.5 on p. 123 (Ripple Tool in the Timeline). So far so good.
The problem is the next step. It says 'With Ripple active, type in -15 for 15 frames', showing in fig. 6 a rectangular window with 'Ripple' on the left and '-15' on the right. I have never been able to get this window.
If I hold down the left mouse button, I get a small window with 3 double zeros separated by colons on the left and on the right (Media limit on V1). But it disappears as soon as I release the button.
If I right click, I get a window with 'Trim' and 'Add Transition Cross Dissolve'.
But I cannot get the Ripple Value window shown in fig. 8.6.
By the way, the figure numbering in Lesson 8 is faulty. The numbers go 8.5 (p.122), 8.6, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7 and then 8.10.
A couple of other points: Shift O takes me to the end of the sequence, not of the shot, and I cannot see sprocket holes on the right side of the Viewer window, although 'Show overlays' is switched on in the View menu.

  • Video Transition Problem

I've been using FCE for awhile and I've just recently run into a problem with my video transitions between clips. For some reason my fade in fade out dissolve transition will only go to the second clip rather than bridging itself between both the previous clip and the next. I've got the cursor marked between the two clips and I'm having zero success in figuring this out. Can anyone help?
    Thank you!

I do. There's plenty of footage before and after the in and out points. I tried dragging the duration of the transition over to the previous clip and it won't drag. I also tried to increase the duration to the right onto the clip that the partial transition was on to see if I can change it and it wouldn't budge. So there's something going on completely with the video transitions, and unfortunately I'm clueless.

  • Transition problems and also making a clip appear to spin around

    Hi all,
I seem to have problems sometimes putting transitions between clips. WhenI drag the transition to the clip nothing happens. Also is it possibe to get an effect that will make the image in the clip spin around?
    Cheers saxman10

Try my page for an explanation and a tutorial on how transitions work.
To spin a clip around, put it in the timeline. Then double click the clip in the timeline to get it into the Viewer. Move the playhead in the Viewer to the start of the clip and make a keyframe (press the tiny button third from the right at the bottom of the Canvas - look at the button's tooltip for confirmation). Then move the Viewer's playhead to the end of the clip and then activate the Viewer's "Motion" tab to reveal a line concerning rotation. Change the rotation to suit and then make another keyframe. Then return the timeline's playhead to the beginning and play the clip in the timeline.
(I use FCE 3. 3.5 has slighly different layout concerning keyframes.)

  • FCE transitions

I have been working on a project and the transitions were working fine, now i am 28 minutes and 3 video tracks into this thing and all of a sudden, every time I try to use a transaction it comes out like a 'blip'. I have gone into another sequence and they work fine, so I am thinking it has something to do with this particular project, maybe the use of multiple tracks has something to do with it, that i am not aware of?? Does anyone have any clue as to what might be causing this?
I just want to say this forum has helped me thru many problems...THANKS FOR BEING THERE!! And as a fairly new user to FCE you were right it IS worth all the trouble it takes to learn it.
Tom's book has been a fantastic guide even though I didn't get the DVD with it.
    thanks

Thanks Tom, I have been trying to figure this out STILL, but unfortunately I am still stumped. I have 2 clips in my timeline right now (I am doing a test) one is 1:25:22 the other is 44:14. I tried to do a ripple inbetween the 2 clips then insert a cross dissolve and I am getting the message insufficient content.ARRGH! This has been very aggravating to say the least! I have read and re-read that section in the book, yet I still can't seem to figure out what i am doing wrong. I am sure this can't be as hard as I have made it, but I sure can't figure it out.
    HELP!
    thank you

  • Transition Problems in Full Screen View

    Hi.
I've created a Powerpoint presentation on the Bayeux Tapestry which I now want to convert to a PDF document so that I can add multimedia.
My Powerpoint presentation features photographs of a section the tapestry with each photograph placed on a separate slide. I've used the Powerpoint 'push left' transition to create a panoramic effect which creates the illusion that the tapestry is being scrolled from right to left  as the viewer clicks through the presentation. It all works very well in Powerpoint as the slides butt up against each other in transition without any 'seam' between them.
I thought I could simply replicate the effect in Acrobat 9 by converting the presentation to PDF and selecting the 'push left' transition from Advance/Document Processing options then launching the document in full screen view. However, I've found that using a push left transition in Acrobat creates wacking great gaps between the pages as they scroll right to left: this absolutely ruins the whole effect.
As you can probably tell, I'm pretty much a newbie with Acrobat 9 (but not with other Adobe applications) and I can't work out for the life of me how to get around this problem. Is there someting simple that I'm overlooking on the full screen view options or perhaps in the Powerpoint conversion settings or do I have to start adjusting resolutions etc? Or maybe it's just the nature ofthe beast (do hope not)?
I'd be very grateful for any enlightenment or advice.
PS: Forgot to mention the Powerpoint was created in default landscape layout and hence so is the PDF.

Do you have the PDF version to fill the full screen and not leave borders? If you print to PDF (not create PDF), then a margin is added by default (as when you print to paper). The border can be reduced to 0, but that is an extra step with the print. As I recall, the PDF Maker (create PDF) does not include the margins. Thus the whole margin bit may be the issue.

  • Importing from Imovie 08 to FCE 4 - problems

    Hi
Why cant I import projects from Imovie 08 into FCE 4. According to the manuel it should be possible. All I get is a "File error, wrong type" ????
    The manuel:
    To open an iMovie project:
1 In Final Cut Express, choose File > Open.
2 In the dialog that appears, select the iMovie project you want to open.
The iMovie project opens in the Browser and contains the sequence and the clips as
they appeared in the iMovie Clips pane.
Important: Final Cut Express does not import iMovie sound effects, audio levels, or
transitions. All other applied effects are imported.
3 Double-click the sequence to open the iMovie project in the Timeline.
    4 Render the sequence.

    Look at FCE tutorial page:

  • Blurry Ken Burns effect and transitions problem in IPhoto6

I've never seen an answer for these problems, so i'm hoping someone can help. Whenever I use the Ken Burns effect (both the auto and when i do it manually) the photos are very blurry. I have tried large hig resolution photo's as well as lower es. Same result. I thought it might be proessing power or a graphics card issue, but even if i export it to Quicktime or IDVD it's the same blurriness. Is there a setting I need to change? Is my current set up just not capable of utilizing this?
Second problem is transitions. If I do different transitions between slide they frequently will be wrong. Mostly they default to dissolve. If I begin with say Mosiaic, it will work fine until i switch to dissolve, and then it will stay on dissolve, no matter what I change it to. Any help?
Sorry for two seemingly different issues, but I'm trying to do both at once.

Excellent. The generator suggestions worked like a charm. Just curious. What did you mean by adjustment layer. Surely it's something simple, but forgive me for not knowing.

  • Transition problems when exporting to flash

I built a DVD menu with transitions to the different submenus and when I exported the project to flash the transitions were in the wrong aspect ratio and at a lower quality. Is there a way to make it look more seamless?
    Thanks,
    Matt

You may have encountered a problem that does not have a solution. I’m afraid you’ll have to use other software to generate large JPEG files.
    See this technote:
    http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_18893_en-us
    ------- quote ------
Large files are giving out of memory errors when trying to export the files from FreeHand MX. For example, when exporting a file as JPEG with the settings of Resolution: 300 DPI, Anti aliasing: 2, Include Alpha: selected and Quality: 100% the program will generate an error: "Not enough memory to complete command."
    Solution
No workaround has been found for this issue. It has been reported to the engineering team._

  • CSS transitions problems..

I'm using this Page Visibility code in my project, it was perfect in the last version but the latest version not quite..
First off, when I tabbed out of the project on a web browser and when you tab back into it..
(On the previous version) It completely stops the animation and i'll be able to trigger the code.
(On the latest version) It skips few frames then play again.
So, my solution was to stop the timeline of the symbol which is playing whenever it goes to another tab but another problem occurs; once you tab out again on the time when the CSS transition is happening; the transition will stop the animating object and it will not resume the transition.
Oh btw, I'm using animate.css as my presets to my animations. I was adding and removing class and still nothing. I'll try to upload a sample but hopefully some of you will give some thoughts about this. Thank you!

    Hi Paolo
Sharing a sample will quickly help us get to the root cause.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Still and title transition problem

    Premier Pro 1.5
    Encore 1.5
    1H 52Min finished SD video
All video content SD DV, same settings, same camera, same master tapes
All stills 480 max or 720 max with a black video layer below
    All titles made in PP1.5
Many music tracks along  with native audio from the clips
Everything went great, all transitions, stills and titles look good in the timeline. All looks good in the single file avi export from PP1.5 as played with windows media.
As soon as I import the avi into Encore 1.5 to author the DVD, a few transitions between stills and/or titles get scrambled. It happens on about 3 random transitions out of maybe 50 - 100 of them. Sometimes a transition effect (fade) is involved, sometimes there is no effect. An example is 2 stills or titles adjacent to each other with the same duration. After the import to Encore the durations get hosed and the second still or title flashes for less than a second.
Any ideas? Other than this problem this long and involved video is flawless.
    Thanks,
    George

For anyone following along at home. George got his Project done, and reports on it in this THREAD in the PrPro forum.
