FCE widescreen to iDVD

I shot a movie in 4:3 aspect and now want to "convert" it to 16:9 for a DVD (I understand I will get some quality loss etc). I used the Widescreen filter in FCE, exported and then imported to iDVD. The problem is, iDVD still reads it as a 4:3 ratio movie, just with black bands on top and bottom (I realize that is all the widescreen filter does), so I just get a smaller version of my film, in a 4:3 box.
Is there any way to actually change the movie's aspect ratio, by cutting off the top and bottom (where the black bands are), so that it will be "read" by iDVD as a 16:9.
thanks

Edit your material in a 4:3 sequence. Change your preset to anamorphic and make a new sequence. Place the edited sequence inside it and scale up the nested sequence so it fills the frame. The left and right will get cut off and the video will look soft.

  • Why does one of my videos show up as "widescreen" in IDVD?

One of my videos, which I exported from FCP, turns out "widescreen" when I import it in iDVD even though it is a regular 4:3. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could correct this.
    Thank you!

I'm having the exact same issue in iDVD. I've exported QuickTime files using Final Cut Pro 6. In a project I'm currently working on 2 out of 10 QuickTime files previewed in widescreen in iDVD - even though they are all 4:3 clips. I tried creating a new sequence, pasting the content into the new sequence and re-exporting the files but so far I'm still having the exact same widescreen preview issue.

  • FCP/FCE anamorphic to iDVD widescreen - A simple solution?

I have seen a lot of discussions about how hard it is to get anamorphic material from FCP/FCE into iDVD. There seem to be a few complex workarounds using third party software etc.
Today I suddenly came to think about a possible very simple solution.
    1. Export to QuickTime from FCP/FCE
    2. Open the clip in QuickTime Pro
    3. Choose the Window menu and choose Show Movie Properties
    4. Select the Video Track and click the Visual Settings tab
    5. Uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio
    6. Change the width to 854 (DV-NTSC) or to 1024 (DV-PAL)
    7. Save the clip and quit QuickTime
    8. Open iDVD and start a new 16:9 Widescreen project
    9. Import your modified QuickTime clip
    10. Author and burn your DVD
Is it really this easy? Are there any downsides to doing it this way? The modified QuickTime clip's Movie Info in QuickTime says: Format: DV, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576)
I just tested this workflow, and the finished DVD looked fine.

I gave the usual dimensions for Standard Definition DV Anamorphic as an example. The actual dimensions for DV Anamorphic NTSC and PAL are: 720x480 and 720x576, but when stretched, the right width is 854 and 1024 as mentioned in my first post. The dimentions you are mentioning are for High Definition 1080i/p
If you are editing 720p, the dimentions are: 1280 × 720.

I prefer using Compressor/DVD Studio Pro my self, but it would be nice to have a simple solution to offer those who ask about bringing anamorphic material from FCP/FCE into iDVD.
I wonder why Apple has not implemented an anamorphic checkbox or something like that inside iDVD. I have not yet found any guidance from Apple on this matter. Have I missed something here?

  • Getting Widescreen on IDVD

Hello, I have a movie I made in FCE, which I've saved as a Quicktime file, which is the only option I've found to preserve my chapter markers for the movie I created. After watching a preview in IDVD I noticed the movie was 4:3 and not 16:9 which was what it was shot at.
I've sent it over to IDVD and had it Widescreen and not widescreen. I'm not sure what has happened but I checked my settings and IDVD is set to 16:9.
I can stretch it in FCE using the quicktime conversion option and stretch it, but than the chapter markers won't be preserved.
    Thanks for any help,

Well I've tried everything, with no luck so far. The only thing to work so far has been to save the movie as a quicktime conversion file, but this does not allow for the chapter markers to pass through.
Against my instincts, I purchased Quicktime Pro and follow the instructions to change the aspect ratio (hesitate, as someone who knows Macs felt FCE had the same features as QTP). This did not work either. In the instructions it states if it looks good in Qucktime, it will look good in IDVD. This was not the case.
The last thing I'm trying right now as we speak, is I saved the movie as a Quicktime file with the chapter markers included. Than I opened it in Quicktime Pro and selected to export it out of Quicktime. One thing I noticed is that I have the same options as the "quicktime conversion" selection in FCE that has maintained the aspect ratio when moved to IDVD. One of the options is "size", in which I selected a widescreen ratio. I'm hoping this allows me to stretch the footage while keeping the chapter markers intact.
    Wish me luck,

  • Sending FCE project to iDVD

    Hi,
I just produced my first FCE project - a short promo video lasting less than 5 minutes. In exporting it as a standalone movie, I now want to write it to DVD using iDVD. But, when I go to 'media,' I don't have any access to FCE files, only iMovie and iTunes. Can someone enlighten me on the best way to write my project to DVD?
    Thanks,
    Terry

    Hi
I do - in FCE or FCP
    When sequence is ready.
    • Export as QuickTime .mov
    • NOT Selfcontained (not important - just speedier)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (important)
This I Import into a new iDVD project - from within iDVD
Just remember. iDVD doesn't care about GigaBytes BUT only duration of movie + menu.
Also important is that iDVD needs workspace - this it can ONLY take from one place.
    • The Internal Boot Start-up Hard Disk (eventually one external one if it boots)
    • THIS has to have 25Gb free space for standard SD 4x3 TV video
    • For WideScreen You need much more eg 5 times more.
    Yours Bengt W

  • How can I get an anamorph movie to widescreen in IDVD

    Hi, I NEED URGENT HELP!
A friend of mine and I cut and created a movie on his PC with Premiere Pro 2.0. Now I need to create a high quality dvd from it but I can't get the anamorph data to play in widescreen on my IMac. neither in I Movie nor in IDVD. I tried and burned DVDs in both formats 4:3 and 16:9 but both times the film didn't convert to widescreen and on top the movies looked bad- really bad quality, even though the orignal data my friend gave me, is very high quality film resolution.
What do I need to do to convert the xxx.mov anamorph (16:9) into a widescreen IDVD?
My friend says the original material is: Mini DV, PAL 720x576 Pixel, anamorph (16:9)
Or in what form/size do I need the movies/data from him to make sure I can burn a widescreen dvd with it?
    Please help!

I am not sure about SWF support in Acrobat 8.x, however, if it is supported, you will have to add it to the PDF after the PDF has been created.  You can leave the space for it in your FrameMaker document and add it via the Mulimedia Tool.
I do know that SWF is fully supported in Acrobat 9.x, but in this case you will also have to add the SWF to the PDF after converting the FrameMaker document.  To do this, marquee and area on the PDF using the Flash Tool; Tools > Multimedia > Flash Tool.  You can also simply double click on the PDF with the Flash Tool.  Support for SWF, and several other multimedia file types is much stronger in Acrobat 9.

  • FCP 6 export widescreen SD - iDVD 7 widescreen plays 4:3

Exporting DV anamorphic, plays in QT as widescreen, iDVD menu is widescreen, BUT the exported video plays 4:3.

    Hello Todd,
apparently the anamorphic flag got lost somewhere, or is just not seen by iDVD. You can try to trash iDVD preferences, repair permissions, make a new iDVD project ... if that doesn't help you can try to re-install iDVD.
I personally would simply make a disk image, then fix the error with myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com/). I know this may sound stupid but you'll need to correct the DVD anyways, since iDVD always outputs as "16x9 pan-scan & letterbox".
    hope this helps

  • Best way to handle large files in FCE HD and iDVD.

    Hi everyone,
I have just finished working on a holiday movie that my octagenarian parents took. They presented me with about 100 minutes of raw footage that I have managed to edit down to 64 minutes. They have viewed the final version that I recorded back to tape for them. They now want to know if I can put it onto a DVD for them as well. Problem is the FCE HD file is 13Gb.
    So here is my question.
What is the best way to handle this problem?
I have spoken to a friend of mine who is a professional editor. She said reduce the movie duration down to about 15mins because it's probably too long and boring. (rather hurtful really) Anyway that is out of the question as far as my oldies are concerned.
I have seen info on Toast 8 that mentions a "Fit to DVD" process that purports to "squash" 9Gb of movie to a 4.7Gb disk. I can't find if it will also put 13Gb onto a dual layer 8.5Gb disk.
Do I have to split the movie into two parts and make two dual layer DVD's? If so I have to ask - How come "Titanic", 3hrs+ fits on one disk??
Have I asked too many questions?

Take a deep breath. Relax. All is fine.
iDVD does not look at the size of your video file, it looks at the length. iDVD can accomodate up to 2 hours of movie
iDVD gives you different options depending on the length of your movie. Although I won't agree with your friend about reducing the length of your movie to 15 minutes, if you could trim out a few minutes to get it under an hour that setting in iDVD (Best Performance though the new version may have renamed it) gives you the best quality. Still, any iDVD setting will give you good quality even at 64 minutes
In FCE export as Quicktime Movie NOT any flavour of Quicktime Conversion. Select chapter markers if you have them. If everything is on one system unchecked the Make Movie Self Contained button. Drop the QT file into iDVD

  • FCE Exporting for iDVD

I have exported movie projects in the past with relatively few issues. I am currently exporting a self contained movie and it is taking about 25 minutes to "cook" (a 38 minute movie).
I save the file to my desktop and then drag it into iDVD and go from there. This time, after exporting the file as a self contained Quicktime movie file and saving it to my desktop I notice the thumbnail is a FCE file.
Normally, if I click the icon it opens up in Quicktime. Now it just seems to open FCE. Here are my questions:
    Is this normal?
    What did I do wrong?
Can I still drag this file into iDVD and render a video?
I am in the process of trying and it is getting as far as encoding the assets and then kind of freaks out after about an hour.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks,

If you exported as Quicktime Movie self-contained, it should work just fine. If you open Quicktime first and use its Open command, the file will open there. When I make a self-contained Quicktime movie, this is normal behaviour on my system. Not sure if it depends upon your OS or not; bottom line, it should work in iDVD
You do not necessarily need to make the export self contained. If you are keeping your FCE project on the same system as iDVD you can unchecked self-contained movie and it will make a smaller reference file that will export much quicker.

  • What are the exact steps to export a sequence from FCE 4 to idvd.

New to mac/FCE, I have attempted to export sequence to quick time movie then save onto desktop. Then I just dragged the quick time movie from desktop into idvd. This worked, but is there a better way. Thanks - Chad

That's the way you do it. If you making the DVD right away and have finished work on the project you can export a reference movie, not self-contained, smaller and quicker.

  • Please help! Video and Audio Cut Out of Project Made in FCE, Burned in iDVD

I made a 20 minute movie in FCE 4 and burned it onto a DVD using iDVD (I have a MacBook that runs Mac OS X Snow Leopard). For some reason, when I watch the DVD, both the audio and the video cut out approximately five minutes into the movie. The audio and video both cut to black at exactly the same time and never come back. I haven't inserted any chapter markers or anything, so I know that's not the issue. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

Open the exported file in the QuickTime player. Does it play all the way through correctly? If yes, you should try the question on the iDVD forum. If no, report back what you've got in the QT player.

  • Final Cut Express won't transfer widescreen to iDVD!

I edited a movie in Final Cut Express, and it plays fine in widescreen in that program. When I export it as a Quicktime, however, it then will only play in 4:3 ratio. I import it to iDVD & it wont play in widescreen either.
(Also... when in Final Cut Exp, how to I change the aspect ratios from anamorphic to 4:3 & vice versa. Just for future reference & to make sure everything is right.)

Yer post has been here a couple days, so I'll take a whack. While researching a similar but different problem (tacked on at the end), I have come upon repeated references to this solution for importing Final Cut anamorphic files into iDVD. They all reference back to Apple support article 75079. Despite the long list of instructions, it only amounts to changing one setting.
First and foremost, you need Quicktime Pro for this to work, because you open the file in QT and then save it with a minor change. You fit the bill because your files are "squished" in QT. If they weren't, then even attempting this would be pointless.
Open the file in QT Pro
    Choose "Window>Show Movie Properties"
In the Property window, click the "Video track" in the "Name" column
    Click the "Visual Settings" Button
Deselect the "Preserve Aspect Ration" checkbox
    Change the "Scaled Size" (NTSC=853 x 480, PAL=1024 x 576)
You will see the immediate change in the QT window.
Choose "File>Save" to save the movie.
If I recall, this saves it as a .mov file. If that's what you started with, then read no further.
If you started with a .dv file and are partial to retaining a .dv file, this other technique I ran across may work just as well:
Open the file in QT Pro
    Choose "File>Export"
In the "Export" drop-down menu, choose "Movie to DV Stream"
    Click the "Options" button
In the "DV Export Settings" window change the aspect ratio to 16:9
Might want to double-check the audio setting to be sure it is what you want it to be.
(The file I tried this on had no audio and was defaulted to 32)
    Click "Okay"
Change the name if you are nervous
    Save the file.
This second method was actually to address a problem when 16:9 QT files import to iMovie as 4:3. For all I know, it won't work on files exported from Final Cut, but I figured I'd toss it in.
As for switching aspect ratios in FC, in my research I have run across references to it just being a button-click.
My own problem has to do with importing (into iDVD) 16:9 QT files saved from iMovie 6. Unlike your Final Cut files that play 4:3 in QT, these guys play 16:9 just fine in QT, so neither of the above techniques changes anything. So far, I have only found a reference to two 3-party programs ("mydvdedit" and "anamorphicizer") as solutions.
Naturally, sharing iMovie->iDVD maintains 16:9 in iDVD, but if I ever get stupid and move to iMovie 08, I understand iMovie no longer shares with iDVD, so then what? I'm just hoping there is some other solution than yet another 3-party program to make an Apple product work right.
Technically, I don't think I highjacked your thread, but if I did, someone can tell me so and I'll copy and past to a new thread.

  • How to get FCE movie into iDVD?

    Hi Folks!
I have a movie that I created in FCE and would like to burn it onto a DVD. When I open iDVD, I don't seem to have access to the movie file that I created. iDVD looks for the file inside iLife. Is there a way I can put the FCE movie into iLife, or is there another way I can burn a DVD from my FCE file?
    Thanks very much!
    Vixter

iDVD looks in your /Movies folder (not 'inside iLife' as you mentioned).
When you export your movie from FCE, save it to your /Movies folder. Then it will show up in the iDVD Media pane, under the Movies folder.
You can also import your movie into iDVD by doing *File > Import > Video* or by dragging the movie (from wherever it is saved on your hard drive) onto the _iDVD main window_ or a _drop zone_ in an iDVD template. Don't try to drop it into the iDVD Media pane - that won't work.

  • FCE movie into iDVD?

Can a FCE movie be exported as a Quick Time movie into iDVD08? How?
When I try to put the QTmovie into iDVD the following message appears:
"The movie could not br opened."
"The file is not a movie file."

I am not able to get a movie into iDVD. Here is my procedure, which is the same as stated on pages 1015 and 1016 in the FCE user manual:
    1) I open the FCE timeline of my 26 minute video.
    2) I go to File > Export > Quick Time Movie.
    3) In the window that opens, I name the movie, specify a location (FC Exp projects folder) and check "Make Movie Self Contained". Then click Save
    4) After exporting completes, I find in the FCE projects folder TWO QTicons of my movie labeled av.mov1, av.mov 2, and a thumbnail showing the first frame of my FCE video.
    5) In a iDVD page that I have prepared, with completed drop zones, I go to Project > Add Movie which puts a box with the words "Add Movie" on the iDVD page.
    6) When I drag either of the two QT files listed above in 4) from the FCE projects folder onto the iDVD page they will not stay, but rather jump back to the FCE projects folder.
    7) However, when I drag the thumbnail of the first frame of my video onto the iDVD page it remains. However, this is a FCE file, not a QT file of my movie, and does not support converting my iDVD file into an image for later burning.
