FCE with AVCHD - unhappy marriage?

Hi! Problems with stuttering clips
+My system: imac 2,2/2Gb Leopard 10.5/+
+Camera: Panasonic hdc 300 AVCHD 1920x1040+
+Audio system: Protools digi rack 44.100+
I am making a sequence and about ten minute into the sequence on a clip about 35 second long the viewer halts and freezes. I have no idea how to get over this. Please help someone?
It also seem hard to get the right audio speed either a bit to quick or a bit too slow.
FCE seems to make your hairs grow grey beofre you know it. Is it really so outdated that it doesn´t handle avchd or is it just me...?

This seems to be a unique problem. I'm wondering how the Digirack fits into your system. AFAIK FCE doesn't support any third party hardware.

  • Losing Quality in FCE With AVCHD Import/Export

    When I plug my Canon HF-100 directly into my 1080p 45" LCD Sony the quality is excellent.
    When I Log and Transfer into FCE, then add clips to the queue and immediately export them as a QuickTime Movie, the quality degrades noticeably. Especially on those scenes where there is panning. There is considerable motion blur.
    Have I done something wrong? I am using full quality settings on the camera at 1080-60i with a tripod and OIS off in order to eliminate this panning blur. I am even using 1/500 shutter speed, and it still blurs whenever I pan. I am using the top end MBP.
    But, as I said, playing directly from the camera is much better. Any feedback or suggestions? I have tried everything I can think of.

    What I don't understand is this. I have seen some highly compressed 540P and 720p video on the web that is remarkably clear. (With bit rates as low as 2500 kpbs) While it doesn't have the detail of the plants and trees I film, it is undersea video with quite a lot of detail.
    I am losing all of this detail going from AVCHD to AIC. No compression yet at all. The file size is still huge, and the bit rate is "up there." 1.2 GB for 45 sec. and 230,000 kpbs and it is still blurry.
    For anyone interested, here is a sample 45 sec clip. While it is compressed for your viewing, it is still very clear and illustrates accurately the panning blur I see in the uncompressed AIC. This is the same blur I see when viewing the 1.2 GB/230,000kpbs file.

    The reason I am asking these questions is because I am being told elsewhere that this is the nature of the AVCHD "beast." That it is impossible to get the clear panning I desire with any AVCHD/CMOS camera. They say because of the way indivual frames are treated (something to do with a long GOP), it is impossible, and I need a 3 CCD camera with a different codec.
    If this is true, then fine. But I don't want to spend $5-10,000 and still have blurry pans.

    Why don't my clips appear when I open the Log and Transfer window?
    Make sure your camcorder records AVCHD in a format supported by FCE4. It should be connected to one of your computer's USB ports (never connect it to an external hard drive or other external device such as your keyboard or a USB hub), powered on, and set to video playback mode.
    If the camcorder +does not+ mount on your Desktop your USB port or cable may be malfunctioning. Try plugging it in to another port or using a different USB cable to see if it makes a difference.
    If the camcorder does mount on your Desktop but the clips do not appear in the Log and Transfer window you will need to point the program to the directory that contains your media.
    First, click the Add Folder button in the upper left of the Log and Transfer window. The button looks like this:
    Then, you will need to navigate to the root directory in which your media is stored. Most camcorders call this folder "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD" and it should be located at the very top level of the camcorder when mounted.     I would like to keep a working backup of my original clips so that I can delete them off the camcorder's internal memory. How should I do this?
    There are two main ways to keep a backup of your clips. The first is to ingest every clip on your camcorder through the Log and Transfer process, and store the Apple Intermediate Codec files the application creates in an easily accessible place such as an external FireWire drive. As long as you maintain the original file structure, you will be able to ingest your clips again at a later date using the "Add Folder" process detailed above to navigate to their new location.
    My clips appear, but when I attempt to ingest a red exclamation point appears and the window displays the message "Error: No Data"
    This is one of the most common problems that users experience when trying to ingest their media through the Log and Transfer process. Luckily, it also has one of the easiest solutions.
    In the Log and Transfer window, click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Preferences" in the contextual menu that appears.

  • Capture HD with AVCHD apple intermediate codec

    I have captured video from my Canon xha1 previously. Today I went to capture some video. I have my presets to HD with avchd apple intermediate codec. When I go to capture I receive the message "capture preset must have video or an audio digitizer set to capture. Please change the desired preset in the audio/video settings. I go back to system settings and the "audio capture" is not highlighted. I'm not sure if this is how I set the capture preset or if there is something else I am looking for. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

    The camera settings are on HDV/DV. I haven't changed the setting, that I am aware of. I have tried a few easy set up settings. Last night I set to all formats and HDV. I was able to import video but not audio came through. I also tried HD with HDV or AVCD and received the message about needing a digitized audio preset. Today I received the message my deck could not be recognized. I loaded the footage into imove hd just to check my firewire. Video and audio both came through. Interestingly enough when I tried to import an imovie hd into fce, I received an error message. So my problem went from bad to worse. The other devices connected to my imac is an external hard drive and a printer. In the system profiler my camera is listed under the firewire device tree.
    I am going to call Apple again tonight. I have only had this machine a month. So I am not very experienced with what can go wrong. But I guess I'm learning. By the way I have enjoyed your tutorial. I have learned a lot.

  • FCE and avchd how does it work?

    Hi everybody,
    I'm interested in FCE for editing avchd but I don't know how it works.
    I mean, when I log and capture from my sony hdr sr12, can you see and edit it straight as it is or is avchd to be converted into another codec more FCE friendly?
    That would mean one more step and as consequence there would be a quality degrade.
    Does anyone Know how it works?

    "iMovie ’08 and Sony HDR-CX11, HDRCX12, HDR-SR1 and HDR-SR7 cameras work with AVCHD (high-definition) and MPEG-2 standard definition (SD) content when you follow these guidelines.
    If the Sony HDR-CX11, HDRCX12, HDR-SR1, HDR-SR7 and HDR-SR12 cameras contain both HD (AVCHD) and SD (MPEG-2) content, iMovie ’08 can import the SD (MPEG-2) content. However, to import the HD (AVCHD) content to an Intel-based Mac, you must first erase the SD (MPEG-2) content on the camera."

  • Import/export codecs/settings for FCE with HMC40 footage?(lengthy post)

    Hi all,
    I am pretty new to video editing in FCE, and brand new to 'tapeless workflow' (just bought a Panasonic HMC40)
    so am not sure of all the technical protocol yet.
    What is AVCHD as opposed to DV or HDV?
    What is meant by 'transcoded'?
    For the following series of questions, my final usage will be for the web, flash video (.flv file as converted in Adobe Media Converter from the quicktime file exported from FCE, unless there is a method to export directly to a flash video file from FCE i.e. what is the FLC format?) streaming from my server and played with a flash player (.swf file)
    Obviously, I would like to achieve the best quality possible while still maintaining a fast streaming time

    I see that if I go to menu-->final cut express-->easy setup I get a window with default import settings as in figure 1 below

    Wow! A huge amount of questions, almost all of which are available using search engines. The forum isn't really designed to give you a detailed instruction on digital video or on basics of how to use the application.
    AVCHD is a highly compressed MPEG-4 based HD format. DV is a standard definition format. HDV is an MPEG-2 based HD format.
    FCE does not encode Flash. You need third party software.
    24p is not supported in FCE.
    If you're shooting HD you should select HD.
    25fps is for PAL based formats. 29.97fps is for North American based video standard. 24fps is a film frame rate. Most video cameras do not shoot 24fps, but 24fps recorded at 29.97 with pulldown. If your camera shoots true 24fps, it is not supported in FCE.
    What you select depends on exactly what you shot. Read the camera manual carefully for the different options of frame size. Native 24p is not supported in FCE. 30p can be ingested using a 1080i60 preset.
    How you export depends of where you're trying to get to. If you're going to third party encoding software you should export to QuickTime Movie.

  • Aspect ratio problem with AVCHD in iMovie 08

    I am importing footage from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 into iMovie 08. the footage gets in there fine and looks great EXCEPT that the footage (all shot in 16:9) is squashed a little bit. in the preview clips below, it looks fine, but in the player above (and if I export it as a Quicktime file) it is squashed slightly. there are black bars above and below the footage, and (I'm guessing) were the video stretched to fill the entire area, eliminating the black bars, it would be the correct aspect ratio. I've tried importing footage form the camera supposedly shot in 4:3, and the same thing happens.
    I know that I can simply do a quick edit in imovie, export it, import it into final cut pro, and stretch it back. however, I'm worried about losing quality, and more importantly, I don't know the exact ratio, since I can't even figure out what imovie is doing to the video to make it squashed, let alone in what manner.
    the footage from the HDC-SD9 is AVCHD, and I understand there is something about square pixels vs. rectangular, but I don't know much about it. I have tried every iteration of imovie's limited aspect ratio settings, and I can't get it to work. I know it's meant to work well with AVCHD, so I'm assuming I'm missing something fundamental and simple. (some box to check to let imovie know I'm importing AVCHD?) it's maddening to see the footage correctly in the thumbnails, but squashed for (seemingly) no reason in the playback. can you help me out? otherwise I am going to film myself holding something that is a perfect square, then import it to imovie, then export to quicktime, then import the quicktime file into finalcut, then stretch it til the rectangle becomes a perfect square, and write down the settings for the future. seems ridiculously complicated, especially for the mac world.
    I love imovie 08 (seriously, some of the new toys are just so amazing, and no render time at all!), and I love this camera. please tell me they can get along!

    I think I'm having a problem similar to this. I'm using a Sharp MiniDV camera, and shooting in 16:9. When I used to import to other versions of iMovie it worked fine, but w/ iMovie 08 it is squashing and stretching the incoming video to more like 20:9 (I have no idea what the actual ratio is, this is just a guess). I tried changing import to PAL 25fps, but that didn't do any thing. Any other suggestions?

    I have a sony handicam and I imported the clips to iMovie and they lost quality and converted the audio to stereo. I want to import the project to final cut X and import the AVCHD in 1080p and surround sound and export the movie in bluray. Can I relink the clips without editing everything again?

    Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
    Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
    You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

  • Premiere Pro/Prelude CS6 not working with AVCHD from Canon HF G10

    I just tried switching from Final Cut Pro 7/X to Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and have not been able to get Premiere Pro or Prelude to work with AVCHD footage from my Canon HF G10.  The system runs Mac OS X 10.7.4 on a 3.4 GHz quad-core iMac with 16GB of RAM and 10Gbit/s Thunderbolt RAID for video storage.   Adobe Updater ran yesterday and installed CSXS infrastructure updates which did not fix the problems.
    After importing several short (less than 5 minutes each) 1080p30 clips into Premiere Pro, I can scrub over the first few seconds of a clip but afterwards it stalls or mixes in frames from the beginning of the clip.    Rendering 30 seconds of video does not complete in reasonable time, i.e. takes more than 5 minutes.   I figured I would try ingest the footage with Prelude and am running into the same problems.   Scrubbing does not work, only the first few seconds from a clip are available.     When configuring Prelude to transcode on ingest, I am getting "Import XMP failed" errors.   I already spent several hours trying to figure this out.   In the meantime, I finished the project using Final Cut Pro X :-\
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Any chance this gets fixed soon?  I'm shooting with an AF-100, and at this point I'm still using Final Cut to transcode my footage so I can have audio.  I've also noticed the video jumps around even when it does have audio.  Prelude has been extremely problematic for me, and it doesn't have a way to bring in clips that returned errors upon importing, I have to write down the clip numbers and bring them in individually.  I've also tried just dropping the file structure from the card straight to the hard drive.  It's a huge problem, and is keeping me from making the switch fully from FCP 7.

    Working with AVCHD & P2 in FCP 6.  I brought the P2 in via Log & Transfer.  I converted the AVCHD to ProRes 422 with ClipWrap (renamed the files with NameChanger) & then imported the .mov files into FCP.   I just wanted to make sure this sounded like the best way to import & make the clips compatible before I go any further.  Thanks. 

    Bring both P2 and the AVCHD into FCP, Log & Transfer, use DVCPRO-HD since it's what P2 is anyway, and P2 is less compressed than AVCHD.  You'll have about as good a quality as you're going to get out of those codecs.  No need to go outside of FCP.

  • Working with AVCHD in Premiere Pro CS5

    I'm editing a small promotional video for a new client and they have provided me with the footage. The problem is that I have never edited AVCHD in premiere before. I thought i would be okay as long as I used the AVCHD sequence presets, but I am already running into problems: 1) upon initial import, there appears to be artifacting in the bin footage that was not present when I viewed the raw files and 2) when i try to lay footage onto the sequence, no audio is imported. Someone please help! The footage was shot on a Sony HDR SR5 (1080i, 1440x1080, 29.97 fps, 6-channel compressed 48k audio, MPEG in .m2ts file extension).
    Additionally, are there any other major obstacles I risk running into moving forward working with AVCHD?

    Welcome to the forum.
    Along with Harm's suggestion, make sure that you set up your Sequence with a 5.1 Master for that Audio.
    Also, what is the Audio CODEC for that Audio Stream, AC3?
    In addition, be sure to allow PrPro time to completely Conform the Audio and Index the file. There is a little progress bar, that will appear. Let it complete 100%.

  • Premiere Elements 9.0 no sound with AVCHD

    Hi all I'm trying to work with a new camera that I bought (primarily for stills, but the HD video is so good I'd like to use with prelements) which is the Panasonic Lumix FZ35 U.S model but when adding a AVCHD file form the camera on to PC and then into elements the video looks fine but there is no sound channel.
    I've tried changing the extension to the file (.MOV) but the same problem remains.
    I can switch the recording format to Motion Jpeg but the files are huge and vastly reduce my recording time
    I'm wanting to know if A) these files can be easily imported into PE or B) if there is a way of converting (hopefully not a lengthy process) and how best to do it without loss of quality.
    Any help or advice on this would be great.

    It looks like that camera records in AVCHD Lite, and that the Audio is recorded with DD Stereo processing, and I would guess that it uses a single mic, but processes the Audio to simulated stereo. What I could NOT find from the specs. page, was exactly what format/CODEC is used for the Audio stream. I can only guess that it is DD AC3, which should Import fine into PrE. May be that I just missed the Audio spec.
    What Project Preset did you choose?
    With AVCHD (and possibly AVCHD Lite), one should have the choice of either stereo, or DD 5.1 SS. In this case, I would choose the stereo option.
    When you Imported the footage, did you wait for PrE to Conform the Audio fully? This ARTICLE will give you some background and some tips.
    Also, there are a couple of things to consider with Audio.
    Can you hear Audio in other programs?
    Can you hear Audio in PrE with other source files?
    Can you see the Audio portion of the Clip, in an Audio Track in PrE? Note, depending on how one has set up the Project, one may have to use the Scroll Bars to find this, when in Timeline View Mode. The Scroll bars are to the far-right of the Timeline Panel, and are not easy to see.
    Let us know about your Project Preset and the Conforming process. Then let us know about the general Audio on the system and in PrE. This ARTICLE will give you some things to check out, but those will depend on the answers to those general Audio questions.

    - works good and fast
    - But better don't try to use an external monitor on DVI connection
    my system slows down if srubbing time line
    - couldn't find out yet why

  • Workflow questions with AVCHD footage

    I copied the entire content of a SDHC card that was shot with an AVCHD camera to a folder on my desktop. I just used the Media Browser in CS6 to double click on the files to view them. I'm coming from Final Cut Pro where I had to convert all of these files to Pro Res 422 before being able to edit them.
    1. Do I just leave the content of this folder as is? Do I need to do anything to the files before editing them? So if I start editing clips from this card after opening them in the Media Browser, and assemble clips in my Timeline and then export, is that all I need to do?
    2. If so, to number 1, then after every shoot I would just copy the entire content of a card to a folder on my hard drive and just leave it there until I'm readt to edit it, and after I edit it the folder structure and contents of the card remain the same?

    With AVCHD, it doesn't work that way.  It all goes into the same fodler regardless of when it was shot.
    If you shoot something you don't need, the best option in general is to just leave it there anyway.
    For organizing different projects, always format the card in the camera before a new shoot.  Or use a different card.  In other words, don't mix projects on the same card.
    Sorry Jim, I hate to take issue with you, but that is not the case with my Canon AVCHD camera. It behaves just as I described in my post.  The AVCHD video *.mts files, together with matching *.cpi files are contained within a folder for the day's date inside a TVD_ACHD folder.
