FCE won't launch without external disk

I've just noticed that FCE 4.0.1 won't launch unless I have my external disk attached.
The external is set up as the primary scratch disk, and first place for 'search folders'. My MBP is designated as the secondary scratch (video capture only) and second for search folders.
FCE launches immediately with the external attached. Without it, the icon bounces once in the dock, no splash screen appears and soon after the app is shown (in the Force Quit) window as not responding.
Can you tell me what do I need to change to allow FCE simply to open, without the external?

As a test, I deleted the external drive as the nominated scratch disk, and set the MBP as scratch instead.
FCE then opens straightaway.
But that's not the set up I want to have. I'd like the external to store all the media/render files but still be able to launch FCE on the MBP without the scratch in case anything goes awry with the external.
Any ideas what's happening at the moment, and how to fix it?

    Hi Janice,
What version of Mac OS are you using?
Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • HT201250 My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1

My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1
I have tried everything, even buy new external disk from different manufacture.
If I cant get a fix soon, I am downgrading back to SnowL.

Still no luck. I tried all the tricks, reconfiguring TM (remove selected disk option, and re-setting it, and trying different disks). Tried new combo updater, and the newer TM update after that. Tired two different disks too (one is my older firewire WD MyBook 1TB, and my brand new 3tb Seagate GoFlex USB... either one plugged into back of computer - no intermediary devices). I did get the TM buddy wiget and it produced the following log, from the last attempt, where I setup lots of exclusions so that backup quantity was small (under 10gb). Still it failed to complete. Here is that log, for what it is worth:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/TM-Disk/Backups.backupdb
9.56 GB required (including padding), 911.15 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Copied 0 files (0 bytes) from volume Mac HD.
    Backup canceled.
To prove a point, I will take these disks are run them on my other Tiger and Snow Leopard laptops to prove TM works fine on those with these disks. But I fear the only options are to either have my tech re-install LION... or just have him reinstall SL instead. Im at wits end.

  • FCE won't launch

I can't get FCE to launch. I've had the program for months and it was working fine. Recently stopped working (maybe after a couple of programs were updated?) Won't launch at all. I've tried all the stuff in related posts:
    * Updating Quicktime
    * Trashing prefs
    * Repairing prefs
    * Uninstalling and re-installing FCE
I've also disconnected various devices (Sony DCR-HC26, firewire splitter device, M-Audio Solo firewire audio input interface) and restarted the computer, re-installed drivers for the audio interface, etc. All to no avail.
Incidently, iMovie won't launch either, so the problem would seem to be related.
    Thoughts?

These are the exact instructions as described in the Disk Utility Help Manual:-
Testing and repairing your startup disk.
If you have problems with your startup disk, you can use Disk Utility to test it for errors and repair it. To repair your disk, you must start up from another disk, such as your Install Mac OS X disc.
You may be able to test your startup disk without starting up from another disk. Open Disk Utility, select your startup disk, and click First Aid. If the Verify Disk button is available, click it to test your disk. You need to start up from another disk only if Disk Utility finds errors or if the Verify Disk button is dimmed. When testing your startup disk, Disk Utility may report errors when there are none. Starting up from another disk and then running Disk Utility gives more accurate results.
You can always test and repair disk permissions on your startup disk without starting up from another disk.
Start up your computer using another disk.
To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc and restart your computer holding down the Option key, then select the Install Mac OS X disc and click the arrow.
    Open Disk Utility.
If you're using the Mac OS X Install disk, follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it., and then choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility.
Select the startup disk in the list of disks and volumes, then click First Aid.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. If you can't see it, be sure you selected the hard disk your volume is on, and not the volume itself.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "About to Fail," back up your files on the disk as soon as possible and replace the disk.
If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "Verified" or "Not supported," click Repair Disk to repair the disk.
If Disk Utility tells you to look for links to corrupt files in the DamagedFiles directory, two or more files occupy the same space on your hard disk and at least one of them is likely to be corrupt. Examine each affected file in the DamagedFiles folder, which at the top-level of the affected disk. If you can replace it or recreate the file, delete it. If it contains necessary information, open it and examine its data to make sure it has not been corrupted.
If Disk Utility cannot repair your disk or reports "The underlying task reported failure," try to repair the disk again. If that doesn't work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat your disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and restore your backed up data. If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced. See an authorized Apple dealer for more information.

  • New MacBook won't boot from external disk

I have a new MacBook that I am trying to boot from an external disk that had the system from my first gen MacBook Pro. When I restart holding the Option key, and select my external disk, the system restarts again and won't let me boot from that disk. Is there something different with the OS (10.5.6) that is installed on a newer MacBook that won't allow it to boot from the same OS from an older MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

    golferx,
Will any other Intel Mac boot from the drive? If not, it's possibly because the drive uses an Apple Partition Map (bootable for PowerPC Macs) instead of a GUID Partition Table (bootable for Intel Macs).
To check: open to Disk Utility, select the hard drive on the left, select the Partition tab and look at the text at the bottom right corner of the window under Partition Map Scheme. If it says anything other than GUID Partition Table, you will need to erase and repartition it as such before it will be bootable.
Just a thought. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I can boot an prev gen MacBook and also my iMac (current gen). I took it to the Genius Bar and he could not get it to boot a new MacBook either and didn't have a solution.

  • After upgrading to Itunes 7.2, it won't launch without crashing

Itunes was working fine on my pc. When I opened it, it prompted me to install an updated version of Itunes and Quicktimes. I followed the prompts and installed it. After it installed, I launched Itunes and it crashed with "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I sent the report to Microsoft, without any results.
In my application event log, I see 2 events:
Faulting application itunes.exe, version 7.2.0.34, faulting module itunes.exe, version 7.2.0.34, fault address 0x00a33ac0.
    Fault bucket 438926550.

  • FCP Won't Startup Without External Hard Drive

I tried posting something about this earlier, but I don't think I titled or explained myself well.
I cannot get FCP to startup unless my external hard drive is running and mounted. This is happening on 2 different computer with different drives (1 is firewire 800, the other and eSATA minitower). With the drives off, FCP stalls on startup and I have to force quit it and sometimes 2 other identical applications titled the same: MultiMediaImporter.
After the drive is turned on the FCP opens to a new, untitled project and works normal. I can unmount the external drive and run FCP as normal as well.
I can't open any past project until that drive is up and running. I have some projects that contain no media on the external drives, and other projects that do. The only thing that is stored on these external drives is P2 media that I have imported into the FCP projects via XML.
I don't know what else to post, I'd add the problem report, but each computer seems to be stalling out at different points on boot up. However, those positions are strange, one being CoreGraphics the other on FamilyControls.
Oh, and I have tried deleting the prefs. No help at all.
    I appreciate any ideas. Thanks

From the FCP menu bar: Final Cut Pro > System Settings > Scratch Disks.
What drives are set to be used as Scratch Disks? If those two externals are included in the list FCP will always look for them. As it will if the project file contains pointers to media that it expects to find on those disks, even if the media is no longer there.
You need to open each project, reconnect the media to the location where it actually is and save the project with that updated information.
Did I mention that it is not a good idea to keep FCP media on your system drive?

  • ITunes won't launch after running Disk Slim

In an attempt to regain some free space on the hard drive of my Intel iMac, I ran the “Drive Slim” application contained in the Drive Genius 3 suite of applications. It was set to find, and remove, all Universal Binaries (non-Intel Support) items and all Cache/Temporary Items (not accessed in the last 14 days).
When the application had completed the task of finding and removing these files, I rebooted to find that iTunes could no longer be opened. When I click on the dock icon for iTunes 9.1.1, the icon bounces 5 times and nothing happens – no even an error message. Because iTunes opened before I performed the Drive Slim operation I am pretty certain that an item was removed that is required for the proper functioning of iTunes. I did a clean install of the Snow Leopard System Software and of the iTunes 9.1.1 application and it still will not launch.
Please help me understand - short of a complete backup restore (because I will lose about a month of data!) - what I can do to correct this issue.

I got in touch with Drive Genius tech support (you'll have to call, they are 'backed up' and aren't answering email).
The analyst was good. Got my info, told me he'd be in touch with engineering and would be back in touch.
He got back to me in about an hour with a suggested solution that worked.
    De-install flip4mac and reinstall it.
That's all it took for me. I hope this works for anyone else with the problem.

  • [SOLVED] KF5/Plasma won't start without external monitor

I have connected an external monitor through HDMI, it works fine in plasma5, the only problem is, if HDMI isn't connected I can't start Plasma 5. I just attached the monitor again, disabled it in the setting (the monitor stopped showing any display, but now Plasma gives black screen if HDMI is not connected, but if HDMI cable is connected the laptop screen would turn on just fine.
I have tried removing the kwinrc and all plasma* from ~/.config but to no avail.
    How can I reset it?
P.S: I created a new 'test' user, and Plasma works fine with it, so it's not an installation problem but a configuration problem.

Ya, I run dual monitors on a single nvidia card and on about every second or third reboot, I would end up loging into mirrored screen 1. I would have to disable compositing, reset screens in nvidia-settings, then re-enable compositing. Someone else was complaining about the artifacting and said he cured it by removing those two applications. I figured I could skip the disable and enable of compositing and was pleasantly surprised to find that it also cured the mirrored screen issue too.

  • HT1926 itunes won't launch without Bonjour; where do I do to download Bonjour (and maybe Safari is needed too)

Cannot launch itunes; says I need to download Bonjour; where can I go to download Bonjour.  And do I need to download Safari too?  if yes, where can I get that as well. Thxxx.

Uninstalling and then reinstalling your iTunes should also get your Bonjour reinstalled.
For the reinstall, use an installer downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
... or you could get it back via your Apple Software Update for Windows.
If you'd prefer not to uninstall iTunes, try the following procedure.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the Bonjour.msi (or Bonjour64.msi) to do a standalone Bonjour install.

  • Most apps won't launch - Safari, Disk Utilities, FontBook, Help, Systm Pref

This morning my MacBook powered down because the battery ran out. When it powered up everything seemed fine. A couple hours later Safari crashed. Now it won't launch at all. Most Apple apps won't launch now, including Disk Utilities, Font Book, Help, System Preferences, etc. My software update says I am up-to-date on all software, nevertheless, I used Windows Explorer to download the OX 10.4.9 update and re-installed it. • DVD Studio Pro Won't Launch

When I try to launch DVD Studio Pro 4.02, I get a series of error messages saying that it can't find specific files. These files are from an old project that I deleted, so they no longer exist. The real problem is that it eventually freezes and doesn't open. I reinstalled from the disks, reinstalled the upgrades, tried deleting every project file and all files in the DVD Studio Pro folders and I still get the error messages and the program freeze. Any help would be appreciated.

Solved the problem. I had to clear out all files from the "Movies" folder. Still a bit annoying that the program won't launch without having all of the files.

  • CSS 8.3 in Win7 won't launch - error re: css_admin.exe Entry Point not found... Help

New install of Win7 / all Win7 drivers installed & working
Except... during launch of CSS 8.3 (w & w/o patch installed - tried both ways), an error window pops up with:
css_admin.exe - Entry Point Not Found (title bar)
    (Red X in window)
    The procedure entry point
    ??0LocalFileFormatTarget@xercesc_2_7@@QAE@QBQAVMemo
ryManager@1@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link
    library xerces-c_2_7.dll.
?? What is all this stuff mean ??
(the underscore is NOT present in the window, by the way...)
HELP!  Anyone have ANY idea what the above lingo is re CSS and why it won't launch without popping up a window with this error, whatever it is??
I'm days into this reinstall and this is my "last" hangup / called support and they won't touch it since i didn't BUILD it with Windows 7 from them... just don't get this mindset.  Only spent 5 digits (around $20,000 +) with Lenovo so far last year / may be the last dollar - I've run into many issues with support lately, for one the T61p I have has had 2 sys boards swapped, processor, 2 keyboards (after "loose screws from sys board swap" were found rolling around inside - yes, loose) among many other issues / only TP I've ever had issues with / want to stay with them, but if I have to fight city hall to swap out a lemon, heading out into the wild blue.

    Try the following user tip:

  • External USB drive won't mount without running Repair Disk

I have a Seagate external USB hard drive.  It's a 1TB FreeAgent drive  that's USB powered.  I use this to share data across several computers.  Every time I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro, it does not mount.  If I try to mount it, I'm told to "try running first aid".
So, I run repair disk, and then it will mount.  I just did this, and Repair Disk reported "The volume /dev/disk1s1 appears to be OK".
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.  It is formated NTFS, and I have an NTFS driver installed, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you!

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?
