FCE won't recognize my DV camcorder

I've used FCE for a while now.  A couple years ago I switched to an HD camcorder and have imported via log and transfer no problem.  But I am plugging in my old camera to view some old DV tapes, and I can't get FCE to recognize the camera.  Any help on what to check?

  • FCE won't recognize my sony camcorder....

I have a 27" imac running on OSX 10.6.4. I'm trying to connect my sony dcr-hc46 to it via a firewire cable. so far my computer, or FCE has yet to recognize a device connected. I am going from a four pin connection from the cradle of the camera to a 9-pin connection in the back of the computer. Is the camera just not supported? Is my cable bad? Is the port shot? How do I troubleshoot, or get this thing to work?!!!! Any help would be appreciated. Nobody at sony or apple has been able to help.

    Hi
Turn on and connect Camera in VCR/Play mode - Then first start FinalCut.

    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.

    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • Please Help!!! FCE won't recognize HV-20

Hello, I tried to capture some video and FCE won't recognize the canon hv-20. I tried to go from the hdv/dv output on the camorder to the firewire port on the computer and also from the usb to usb and nothing. On the easy setup I have dv-ntsc selected. I have a macbook osx 10.4 so it should work. Any help would be great. Thanks!!

Look in the Easy Setup for "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec".
There may be several, so if you don't know which to use, try them all until you find one that works.
It's only going to take a minute or so to find which one recognises your camera.

  • Imac won't recognize dcr-trv19 camcorder

After trying all the usb type cables (which used to work), I've just bought a new firewire cable and that doesn't work either. Before I return the cable is there some trick I don't know to get the camcorder to show up?

I realize this is an older post, but my son just dug up our old digital tape recorder (Sony DCR-trv19) and it isn't recognized by our older version of iMovie 09. We've connected it to an iMac that we used to import movies to all the time, but the setup doesnt' seem to function anymore. HELP! I have a very disappointed budding movie director who would love if his dad figured this out.

i tried to get the installation disc for the camcorder but mac wont' recognize it becaue it is windows based i guess.
i just bought the camcorder a few months ago and when my computer crashed thought i'm finally getting a mac...it's been a costly venture which has resulted in more frustration than before my pc.
now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • Elements 3 won't recognize a camcorder

Have version 3 installed. It won't recognize a Sony digital camcorder which it has in the past. Used both USB and firewire. Firewire works with Microsoft Movie Maker Using Windows XP.
Also have version 4.0 but didn't install it because of the negative comments I read on forums such as this one.
May have to reinstall version 3 to solve problem. Other question is, should I reinstall 3 or install 4? Or should I just buy the new version 7 bundle?
Any suggestions on how to get version 3 to recognize the camcorder? Or, if not, which version is the most stable, etc. I have not progressed to HDV or Blue Ray yet and have no need for this capability. At least, I don't think I do.
    Thanks for your input.

Using only the FW connection, as PE cannot work with the USB connection, if WMM can see your camera (is that what comes up, when you plug it in, and turn it on?), it does sound as though something is getting in the way with PE.
I've seen instances, where the exact order of things seem to affect the operation of a Capture operation. These seem to be camera and system specific.
Try plugging in (FW only) the camera, turning it on, letting the Windows pop-up come up and exit out of that. THEN, start PE. Does this help? If not, power-off the camera and unplug it. Cancel any pop-ups about hardware unplugged, should you get any. Start PE. Plug in the camera, and then power it up. Exit any pop-ups, and put PE into Capture Mode. Does this work?
If still no go, then try plugging in the camera, but NOT turning it on yet. Start PE, go into Capture Mode, and THEN turn on the camera. Exit out of any pop-ups. Does this work?
Note: always plug/unplug the camera with the power OFF. Though there has been discussion on this (as most camera FW ports are 4-pin and unpowered), but be safe. No power on, when you plug/unplug. I even turn off power to the computer, when doing the plug/unplug operation, but then one could not have PE going, without always having the camera plugged in, but powered off. Just be careful with the plugging of the FW into the computer. We do not want a fried FW port on either your camera, or your computer. Yes, there is a little "catch-22" involved with my above suggestions.
Steve's suggestion to use WinDV is a good one, and might save you bothering with the test. Most folk do not have a problem with a FW-attached mini DV tape camera and Capturing via PE.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

  • IDVD won't recognize imovie project

    Hello people.
I have an 09 Mac desktop computer. I have now made seven iMovie projects ranging from ten minutes to almost two hours. Each time I shared the project with iDVD to burn the finished product to disc. Each time I made sure I could play back the movie on our DVD player.
I was able to play back each of these movies on my computer as the files ( I am assuming they were files ) were automatically stored in a movies folder right after they were shared with iDVD from iMovie. Since they take up space on the hard drive, I decided to store the files on an external hard drive. I believe each one copied to the hard drive. Once each one was on the hard drive, I made sure I could play it back. Then I trashed each file on the computer, again making sure right after that I could still play each file on the external drive. They would open in iDVD and I could play them. All was good.
Recently I made another iMovie project of my children's high school play. As I did before, I shared it with iDVD and it appeared to be working as usual. It was to take approx. 30 minutes to create the movie from the project. HERE IS MY FIRST PROBLEM! Usually after the movie is created, it then opens in iDVD and from here I can burn to disc. iDVD did not open! I tried a couple of times and nothing. I then tried a short 30 second clip from iMovie with no titles or transitions or anything. This worked. iDVD opened after creating the short movie. My project is an hour long. Consequently with this project I shared it with the media browser and made it into an avi file. I then used a program ( Toast ) that came with my Roxio Converter ( VHS to DVD ) software to burn the movie to disc.
HERE IS MY NEXT PROBLEM!  I went to view the movies on my hard drive and iDVD won't recognize them. It says it can't find the missing audio and video files. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks

    Hello darrenfromnanaimo
Cross your fingers for a satisfactory answer to the "NEXT PROBLEM."  When you copied the iDVD files to your external drive and deleted them on your computer -- hopefully you just deleted the iDVD files and not the iMovie files.  If that's the case, you can reconnect the external iDVD files to the original iMovie files and you're back in business (open the external iDVD project and use it's browser to find the original iMovie files).  If the iMovie files were deleted, that's a more difficult problem -- you'll need to recreate the iMovie files (re-import from the camcorder and re-edit), or you'll have to "rip" your DVDs back into an electronic file (which gives you only the finished product of your original editing, with slightly degraded video resolution).

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.
    Thanks,
    Knapper
    Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • Mac won't recognize my Sony DRX-830UL-T DVD burner

    Hi,
I have successfully used this burner in the past, but for some reason now my computer won't recognize the existence of my burner. When I go to Toast and attempt to burn movies, it only recognizes the DVD machine that comes with the computer, which does not burn DVDs. I believe I have it connected right. It's plugged in, and on. the top cord is connected. Please any help you could provide would be great. Something always seems to go wrong when I try to make a home movie! Thanks!

That's a High Definition camcorder with CMOS not CCD chip so it's recording at 1080i I believe ...
It has an s-videdo output and others have had success with iMovie etc. using that feed.

  • Log and Transfer: FCE4 won't recognize files from my camera

    Hi ...
I have a Sony XHR-NX5U and am capturing video on an optional Sony 128GB hard drive built for this camera. I've shot AVCHD video in both 1080/60i HQ and 1080/60i FX formats, and the camera produces video files in an MTS format (nestled in a series of folders), along with accompanying CPI files (I don't know what these are for).
My FCE4 program doesn't allow me to either import these files or use log/transfer. I've been forced to buy an external program to convert the MTS files into MOV files and then import these (Log and Transfer still won't recognize these MOV files).
What can I do to get FCE4 to recognize and allow the files directly from my camera?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
    - matt

I see your camera can be switched to record a bunch of ways.
    Try this one:
    AVCHD FH (17Mbps) 1920x-1080/60i
It should work with Log and Transfer over USB.
Also make sure you start a New Project in FCE with the Easy Setup AVCHD-Apple Intermendaite Codec1920 x 1080i60 selected and active.
Some cameras do not seem to transfer if mixed media is on the card. Try a test with the above media ONLY on the card.

  • Won't recognize camera

    Hi everyone,
I haven't used my Final Cut Express in a few months. I just connected my camera but it won't recognize it. I entered the program but clicking continue at the beginning so I could maybe capture video that way but when I click capture it closes on its own. iMovie recognizes my camera fine but I just can't get FCE to work. I also tried deleting preferences as suggested in another post but nothing's working. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

Assuming you haven't updated OS-X or QT since the last time you used FCE, here's what I would try first -
Shut down your Mac and disconnect all external FW devices. Then restart & log on. Then connect your camera & turn it on in VCR mode. Then start FCE. See if it works.
If not, I would create a new user account (with admin privileges by the way), shut down the machine again & restart all over as above. Log in to the new account. Connect your camera & turn it on. Start FCE and see if it recognizes the camera. If it works, then something is awry in your original user account, not FCE or QT. I'd trash FCE prefs in the original user account, check the FCE settings and go from there.
If it still doesn't work in the new user account, then I'd look closer at FCE and QT.
By the way, did you add any new FW devices since the last time you used FCE & are they connected at the same time as your camera?

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod Nano (1GB, 1st generation)

I have been having problems Sync'ing my iPod nano with iTunes, however, the more I read help articles and follow the steps, the worse the problem gets. (I'm on a PC using Windows XP)
I've gotten to the point where I updated my iPod software in Disk mode (up until then it was being recognized only in Disk mode), but when iTunes failed to recognize it when not in Disk mode I preceded to restore my iPod to factory settings, as instructed in the help articles.
Now, up until then, I still had music in my iPod, and I was being able to charge it and listen to my music even though I couldn't sync the iPod anymore. After restoring, I not only lost my music (which I was aware of), but it STILL did not fix my problem. So I started to get annoyed.
I then noticed that my iPod was being recognized by My Computer, just not by iTunes, so I began to perform the steps indicated in the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I restarted my iPod service - no luck
I removed iTunes - no luck
I emptied my Temp directory and restarted...
That's when iTunes stopped recognizing my iPod altogether, not even in Disk mode. Not only that, but it seems to have affected the iPod itself, since it won't turn off or exit Disk mode anymore. So now I'm scared of going though with any more steps on whichever "help" articles and making the problem even worse than it already is (if that's possible).
The only other information I can provide is that windows is still recognizing my iPod, no problem, and when I connect my iPod, iTunes actually launches... but DOESN'T recognize a thing. So I ran a diagnostics using iTunes and here's what I got (iPod diagnostics):
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

    Connected Device Information:
IPOD (H:\), iPod nano running firmware version 1.3.1
All green lights, and as you can see, according to iTunes, NO PROBLEM! Except that it won't recognize the iPod that the disgnistics says exists and reads... ?!?!?!
If anyone could shed some light on my situation, i would be VERY greatful!

My IPod Nano will charge when connected to my computer but it won't come up on My Computer or iTunes. So I can't update the songs. I've already tried reseting the iPod. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it.
