FCExp to PCP5 - Render Files Offline?

I can't export a movie file that I converted from FC Express to FC Pro 5 because it keeps telling me that render files are missing...but apparently it's not the clips at fault but the transitions. Yet, try as I may to render, it will not render. Any help out there? Do I need to replace all my transitions with those in FCP5?
Thanks from Gina

1. In the timeline: select all your clips and then hit Ctrl B and then Ctrl B again (do it twice). This toggles the visability of everything off then back on and will delete any references to prior renders.
2. On the menu bar: Sequence>Render All
Make sure all the colors are selected.
This should get you able to render then export.

  • Render File Offline; Project in a Loop

I was rendering a complex part when FCX stopped and said a render file was offline or something. It was so many steps ago, I forget exactly.
Eventually, I had to force quit FCX because it "froze up" on me. I went back to the autovault and got a slightly earlier version before all this started but now if I try to render that same part, FCX stops with the message "La Cie 250/Sequence 2 Op-FIN-0000015d" Render file offline. I had to force quit again because the program won't let me go anywhere.
Am I going to have to trash preferences, repair permissions and restart again? Just had to do this a few days ago. If so, what is the problem? I try not to have too many apps open at a time, do things one at a time, etc.
    Any help MOST WELCOME!!

See if you can play the material using Opt-P without
    rendering.
    Sorry. . . . .what does "using Opt-P" mean?
Look in the capture scratch folder in
column view and see if there are preview windows for
all your clips. If any show up with a generic icon or
the preview is a generic QuickTime icon the file may
    be corrupted.
There seem to be files all over the place in the folders where I designated what was to be the destination for the scratch disk. (I wasn't 100% sure about how to set up the files for the scratch disk because I had to transfer all the project files from one external hard drive to another when the first drive died. I was so afraid of losing all the work that I did what I thought best at the time. Have been a little afraid something like this might rear its head.)
Tom, I don't even know how to begin explaining to you what is where in that external hard drive.
This may be too much for a discussion group question.

  • Render Files Offline

I am using Final Cut Pro 7 and each time I open the project Render Files show as offline and no matter how much I try I cannot reconnect them, cannot find them.
I have the main folder for the project and I am the only editor using this computer yet it happens every time. I read couple of discussions but nothing helped I still have to render every day I open the project.
I am working on two projects at the same time, but each projects has its own folder and I reset the scratch disk. Even when I work on the same project for a week it happens the same.

  • Render files missing? - need help

I was organizing my files and folders, and I must of moved something that had some render files in it. When I start up FCP, I get the "offline files" message that says all my render files went offline.
It says I have 1 media file offline and 228 render files offline. Th puzzling part is if I just continue, the video plays just fine - no rendering needed, no rendering bar. But I can't export using compressor because it says it can't find any render files.
So when I hit "reconnect", it takes me to the menu to reconnect the media. When I search, it finds nothing.
When I look at my media hard drive, I see my projects and see render folders. So there are render folders there. The only thing I can think of what happened is I had duplicate render folders, and when I cleaned up and organized, I must of deleted the duplicate and erased the trash.
I would think when you render, it would create the render files into the appropriate folder. So I guess the solution would be to re-render the whole video, which is fine since I have the time. Would that the best solution?
And if so, what is the best way to accomplish this?
Sidebar: In my media hard drive, I have a folder that says 'render files' and each video project I'm working on has a folder within. Is that the best method for storage? Or is it best to have each project as a folder, with it's own render files folder within the video project folder?

From the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > System Settings > Scratch Disks.
The second entry will tell you where FCP expects your Render folder to be.
If you have moved the folder with the Finder to another location, the path to it is broken, as far as FCP is concerned.
Either, move the folder to the location that Final Cut Pro expects, change the location in the Scratch Disks window to where the folder currently resides or delete the individual subfolders and render again.

First, it's always been impossible in my experience to reconnect render files.  Just the way it is.
People report offline render files every once in a while here so you might do some searching to see if there's a solution.
Make sure the drive with the renders is on the desktop BEFORE you launch fcp and the project.  Are all your drives formatted macosextended?  Do you have a minimum of 10% free space on all drives (and 20% on your startup drive)?  You might try launching a recent autosave of the project to see if that makes any difference.  Are any of your drives connected via a network?  Probably not a good idea.  Try and render to a local drive.
Have you tried deleting your fcp preferences?

  • Losing link to render files

Here's the situation. Final Cut 6.0, running on client's Dual 2.3 OS 10.4.9. Feature film, project was fully rendered the last time I opened it. Now I open it and nothing is rendered, but Final Cut does not prompt me that any render files have gone offline. I check in the Render Files folder and the render files are all still there. I restore the project to the last autosave from last week, when I know it was good. Project reopens, everything now appears rendered in the timeline again. Great, so I Save it (also tried Save As... with same results), close the project, reopen it, timeline appears rendered for a brief moment, then the spinning beachball of death appears for several long seconds, and when it disappears, suddenly everything is unrendered again.
    Explanations? Solutions?
    Thanks,

  • Missing render file/project will not render

I'm new to using FCE - just got my iMac with FCE pre-installed a few weeks ago - and have run into a big problem with current project. When I open the program, it tells me one render file is offline and I can reconnect or continue. I have no idea where the file could possibly have gone, so I select 'continue'. But now the project will not render. I have four sequences open in the project file, and have tried everything - locking and unlocking tracks, selecting various combinations of render both, render all, render selection, rendering only audio or video, etc. All the appropriate render selections are checked in every option. But still, the project won't render any of the sequences; the render box comes up for a split second and goes away faster than the eye can follow. I've tried setting the scratch disk; that didn't help. I tried saving the project, closing and opening the project, etc. Nothing helps. It just won't render. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem?

When I say it won't render, I literally mean nothing happens when I hit the render command. I see the red timeline render bars. However, I see them only when I go to export the video as something else - a mov, dv stream, etc. In the project while working, there's nothing indicating render is required.
To try and solve this problem of the missing audio clip, I opened a new project and imported the .mov file I was working with initially, which theoretically should have all its parts intact. I made the necessary modifications to the file (essentially starting all over) and then attempted to render. It still won't render. Nothing happens at all when I click any of the render options, even after I've made modifications to the video that would clearly require render - changing the aspect ratio and applying a widescreen video filter. So the program should recognize the changes and render, but nothing happens, whether I choose render from the menu or hit the keyboard shortcut.
I'm a little hesitant to try scrapping the preferences as suggested above, but I am totally perplexed.

  • Missing Render files, won't play, General Error message

I have Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 on my Mac 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5, using Mac OS 10.4.10.
I just opened a Final Cut Pro project and got a message that several render files were offline. No idea how that happened, and I couldn't find them to reconnect. Now, when I try to play the video, it stops and a "General Error" message comes up.
I tried re-rendering the whole thing, and reconnected all my media files, but it still won't play. Any ideas on how to save my project?

There are just too many possibilities for us to start guessing. Try searching for GENERAL ERROR and MISSING RENDER FILES, both topics get posted often so you'll find several suggestions and possible causes. However, not many people bother to close their threads around here so there's no way to know if any of the information we passed on was of any help.
FCP 4 and 5 had the odd super-power to make files disappear as if they had never existed. General Error often indicates a corrupt project file so try to open one of your AutoSaves.

  • Export using only render files?

    Hi everyone,
I ran into some trouble with a recent project where I ran out of room on my external and hard drive. I had very little success submitting a working version of of the project which totals at a litlte above eleven minutes (the audio would go out of sync and/or the playback would be garbled). 720p went fine, the 1080p export was what was messing up. Anyway, I thought I had exported a working version and I really needed to make room on my computer again because I had moved around all these files from my documents to try to have as much room on my hard drive as possible, so I deleted the converted source files for the project because I still had the raw files and I figured I could just convert anything I needed over again. Then I discovered that what I thought was the successful 1080p export was actually a MOV that contained references to some of the files in the FCP folder (forgot to check self contained...the rest were tries as H264 and MP4 from "using quicktime compression").
Apparently at some point during deleting the converted files (or earlier), some of the raw source files somehow got deleted. I don't know how and I guess there's no way to recover them; they're gone for good. Yesterday I reconverted everything I could which meant everything except somewhere around five shots are available again. The thing is, it still plays fine in the canvas because I'm pretty certain it's still rendered in 1080p. So I can play it back full screen and it looks great. When I try to export it, however, it replaces the shots with "media offline" cards. So basically my question is is there a way to just use what's already been rendered? It would be a shame to only have this in SD when I have like 98% of it in 1080p.
    Thanks

You can go to your render folder and just play the files and see if what you need is available.  Render files are quicktime files and it's possible use them just like regular qts.  But it is possilble that they might get deleted in clearing out renders so you might want to copy the render folder as a backup.

  • Render files keep missing - help!

I'm trying to export (using compressor), and every time I try, I get an error in FCP that "some files went offline - render files".
I've tried everything I could thing of. I've rendered, I've re-rendered, I've deleted all render files and started over - nothing.
The render folders are names right and in the right place. I even took the tower to an Apple store for tech support, and they agreed everything looked good, as far as folder names/placement. They didn't know what was going on either.
So when I try to reconnect the media after the error message pops up, I get another message that says "there are no clips selected that have files associated with them". I've even used the render manager, deleted the clips, and re-rendered.
Nothing seems to work. What makes it more puzzling is that the audio render folder keeps popping up in the trash. I've moved it to the right place, and poof - it appears in the trash bin again. And some other render files seem to be going there instead of the render folder.
So how do I remedy this? I tried deleted all the render folders, and that didn't help. I'm going to try it again in a few minutes, just in case.
When I go into File/Reconnect media, I get a bunch of render files missing, along with a bunch of my media files listed under 'online'.
If I reconnect the online files, I have to render, and the whole thing starts over again. There is no red render bar in the timeline. The video plays audio and video just fine - just can't export. Any ideas?

My suspicion is that it may have something to do with your scratch disk filepath. What is your scratch disk filepath - drive name, everything...

  • Deleting Capture scratch and Render files

When and how should one go about deleting capture scratch files and render files?
seems alot of folks say to transfer them to disc.... do you have to save them?
i mean if you save the time line project (to re-edit later) and save a dvd proj, and a disc img. and even a copy of the movie/media as qt file -----why do you need to save all the cap scratch and render files???????
    please educate me.
    thanks
    tim

Whoops - only half your questions answered, so I'll try harder:
    > i mean if you save the time line project (to re-edit
    later)
It's the Media Files in the Capture Folder that are the heart of the project. If you delete those, the Timeline will contain only Offline Clips with nothing to re-connect to.
    > and save a dvd proj
Same answer as the QT Movie - only worse! The DVD version will be highly compressed and you'll lose a lot of quality if you re-edit it.
If the project is very small, you might be able to put your FCP project file and the Media Files on a Data DVD - but it will have to be VERY small. The Media Files are BIG.

  • Missing render files

    Hi all,
after a few glitches, I fixed my project file (thanks Studio X).
Now a problem I have when I go in is I get the message "Missing render files". However, I have no part of my project that is not rendered! Should I be concerned? Should I re-render everything?
I have not deleted anything related to my project. The problem I was having was that the media had gone offline because my external HDs were not on when I went in the project and I had trouble "reconnecting".
    Any suggestion?
    Eric

    Hi TheShow!
I did not think I had to reconnect the media since when I went in again I reconnected them the way you described.
What is strange with this issue is that I have no color bar in the timeline indicating that clips are not rendered. Also, when I look at the information on each clips (video and audio) they all say they are rendered!!
Should I just re-render everything? Why is it important to delete render files first? Does it really matter? Where are they?
Woa... that's a lot of questions!
    Thanks
    Eric

  • FCE Losing Render Files After Project is Copied

I've been having a vexing problem that's been costing me a lot of time. FCE keeps losing the render files for my projects, or more accurately, it is overwriting them or otherwise making them disappear. More background:
I have a large master project that is quite lengthy. I am also breaking that project into smaller videos (it's a concert and I want to have individual song videos as well). I render the large file and get it edited the way I like it. I do a "save as" to the project and create a working copy to clip into songs. However, once I start modifying the copy, if I reopen the original, I am told that the render files have gone offline, and even when I do a manual search i can not find them.
Shouldn't a copy of a project get its own set of renders? Or am I doing something wrong?

First, welcome to the Final Cut Express forum!
    Questions
What exactly do you mean by +large master project+ and +quite lengthy?+
What do you mean by +manual search?+ In the reconnect dialog? in the Finder? Somewhere else?
What kind of video are you working with - DV, HDV, AVCHD, something else?
Did your source media clips (video) come directly from your camcorder or some other source? If a camcorder, what make & model?
    What are your sequence settings?
    _Possible explanation_
Render files are associated with a project name, and no two projects use the same render files. What I suspect is going on is that when you do your +Save As+ and give the project a +new name,+ FCE is carrying the render files forward +associated with the name of the new project.+ That would explain why they are no longer available to the first project.
    Suggestion
If you are basically using the same source media clips for your complete concert plus individual songs, imho it would be much better to confine your work to _one FCE project._
In that single project, create your _master sequence_ (the whole concert, as you have already done) and then just create a new sequence for each individual song video that you want to create. This is a much more efficient workflow than creating +separate projects+ to accomplish what you appear to be doing.

  • Missing render file

Hi, I'm trying to clean up some audio in soundtrack, however when I save to file and go back to FCP it says my media is offline and missing the render file. before I saved in soundtrack I rendered to action. when I search my cpu for this missing file it is no where to be found.
    any thoughts....
    cheers -jonathan

Work flow is very important and this is a very good example of why.
    What I do is this:
    1. Export out of FCP, my reference movie.
    2. Encode the movie, using Compressor, as an Mpeg2 asset as well as Encode the audio asset, to AC3, (using the Dolby audio option of Compressor 2 or A.Pack if you don't have Compressor 2.)
    3. Import the Mpeg2 and AC3 assets, into DVD SP.
What this does is create a set of assets that are self contained, that do not rely on any other files to function and DVD SP will never give you problems again, (can't find render files) do to the fact that these new assets, are self contained.
One of the benifits of encoding your asset prior to bring them into DVD SP, is that the build goes alot faster as well, (being that there already encoded.)
Reference Movies can be a real time saver, if used properly. Never import them directly into DVD SP, (due to there dependence on render files.)

  • Render files hidden away - but where?

I have a laptop with several firewire external drives connected. I rendered a sequence in FCP5.04. I was told there was no more space on the selected hard drive, even though there appeared to be more than 6GB of space. Cancelling the warning and restarting the render several times eventually succeeded in acheiving the render. I now disconnected the laptop, and opened the same project from my desktop machine, which was now connected to the same external hard drives. I was told several render files were offline. The expected location of these was given as:
Laptop HD:Applications:FinalCutPro.app:Contents:MacOS:and then a folder with the project name
But where on earth is that? "Final Cut Pro" in the Apps folder is the app pure and simple - it does not have any folders with it. Searching with Spotlight found nothing.
However, if I now network my laptop into the system and relaunch the project, FCP finds those files on the Laptop HD and does not ask me to reconnect. Needless to say, launching the project from the laptop always finds the files.
I want to move the files to a location which is not on the laptop. How do I find them?
    Many thanks
    John

Locate your Final Cut Pro application. CONTROL-CLICK on it and select SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. Now you can find the render file.
    Odd bug this.
