FCP 10.1.1 Updating Projects Stall on Import

Hi All - I've read a bunch of other threads, and can't find this particular issues happening elsewhere.
I have done a similar proces to others where I've stupidly clicked 'update all' before I realised what was happening...
I've tried using EM X with mixed results, and have managed to import half of my projects.
The other half, always fail to import... They just hang on update.
I've tried trashing prefs, clean folders, restarts, even removing project timelines from within projects, so there's only one timeline - and these projects always seem to hang. Just can't get them into FCP X 10.1.1
I'd appreciate any help! - This is driving me nuts.
Cheers,
Corey

Hi Al & Russ, Thanks for your help here.
The Events are stored on an internal drive, as we shoot with RED, it's not feasible to store everything on one drive. Having said that, the files have always been on this drive, and we've not had any issues under 10.0.9
I've attached some pics below to show you the drive setup, along with a sample a projects I'm trying to update (doing them one at a time as they need separate libraries) I also have the EMX open to show you that we're working with one project, and then finally the FCPX window that stalls at this point (for ever)
So Russ, when I have been able to import / update the files on 3 other curent projects, I have kept them (Saved to Old Files folder - you may be able to see it)
Hope this sheds some light - love to know why everyone else in the world dosn't have any problems except me.
Thanks guys - appreciate any help.
(Note: I have tried using EMX to open, and doing manually open and updates - with dumping prefs, restarts and trashing reguslarly)
Cheers guys.

  • How to organize "updated projects"

I have a lot of Imovie 9 projects that were put in the "Updated Projects" folder when importing to imovie 10.  They are all sort of in a jumbled mess in that folder. Is there anyway to organize these projects and events into some way using the date they were created? All of these projects seem to have the same date in that Updated projects folder.
My imovie 9 does still exist and everything is organized there but i would like to use imovie 10 from now on if possible.
    Thanks so much
    Ross

With the fundamental chage in the way stuff is stored in iMovie 10, there is no automatic way to organise but you can move projects and clips between events and you can move events between libraries.  You might want to move each of your updated projects into the event it belongs to.  You can create as many libraries as you want and can choose to open only those containing projects you are currently working on.
    See:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
To organize by date you can of course include the date in event and library names.  Within events clips appear according to their timestamp and you can choose to group clips by date within an event.  (View - Show Separate Days in Events).
Its a very flexible system but a bit of a pain for people who have a lot of stuff organized the 'old' way.
Note:  Some people are reporting problems with wrong timestamps - but AVOID using the Modify - Adjust Clip Date and Time function since there is currently a nasty bug which can cause adjusted clips to disappear.
    I hope this helps.

  • FCP Project stalling when trying to open, takes 10 min to open can't copy and paste

The other day a final cut project I've been working with for a long time (only 23mb in size) started to seize up and stall at 37%ish, then take 5 or 6 minutes to actually open. Once it's open if I try to copy and paste anything into a new project it completely freezes up and I have to force quit every time.
I've gone through and deleted all the render files and ejected the two external drives I have all the media on that are attached to my imac, and still have the same problem. I just opened another project I haven't opened in a while and it opened no problem.
Any ideas why this project stalls when trying to open and also when trying to cut and paste within the project once I've got it open. I have work in this project I need access to asap!
    Help!
    M

Before you go through the following process, make sure all your still images are in RGB colorspace (NOT CMYK or Greyscale) If they are CMYK or Greyscale, use Photoshop to convert them to RGB.
With the certainty that the still images are not the problem,
Put all the media from the problem project on the external drives
Make sure the Project file is on an internal drive.
    Turn off the computer
    Disconnect the drives
    Start the computer
    Launch FCP
    Find and open the project.
It will tell you there are missing files
Click ok to go ahead and open
The project should open with all the media marked as off-line.
Did the project open in a reasonable time?
If no, you likely have a corrupt project file. You could try going into your autosave vault and opening an earlier version.
If it did open in a reasonable time, there is likely a problem with some of the media.
Depending on how many files you have, you can either reconnect one by one to test or use the binary method.
    Turn off the computer
    Reconnect the hard drives
Start the computer, launch FCP and open the project
One by one method (works better when there are not so many items)
    - with the project open
    - right click on an offline file in the browswer and select "reconnect"
    - bring it in
    - play it in the viewer
    - play it on the timeline
    - if it works, go on to the next file
    - if it doesn't you have found a corrupt file (DO NOT assume all the other files are ok, keep testing)
When you are complete, you simply need to replace the corrupt files with clean originals. If you do not have other versions saved someplace, you'll have to do without or recreate them.
Binary Method (works better when there are lots of items)
    - with the project open, select half of the items in the Browser and select reconnect
    - play them in the timeline.
    - do they all work?
    - If so, the problem is in the other half.
    - in the Browser, select half of the remaining files and reconnect them
    - test
    - do they work? if so, select half of the remaining unconnected files and reconnect them.
and so on until you find the file(s) that will not play.
    Have fun.

  • Updating projects from earlier versions of FCPX to FCPX 10.01.3. FCP does'nt see the project i want to update.

I've successfully updated projects that were already in previous version libraries, but have some archived ones from earlier versions of FCPX which the program does not see to update. Any ideas on how to do this!

I am assuming you mean projects from 10.0.x
You need to place them in the traditional location "Final Cut Projects" (at the root of an external drive or inside your Movies folder), and likewise your events inside a folder "Final Cut Events".
Then use File->Update Projects and Events...

  • Updating Projects not in "FCP Projects" folder

How do you update a project if it was not in the old "Final Cut Pro Projects" folder? I had a "Final Cut Pro Projects NOT IN USE" folder. These projects were not updated. Thanks.

I don't mean to sound dense (and I'm sure I do) but the only "Final Cut Pro Projects" Folder I have now is in the "Old Final Cut Pro Projects and Events" Folder that was created when I updated to 10.1.
In the new "Projects and Events" Library, I have a Folder named "Updated Projects". The project does not update when placed there.
Where would the "Final Cut Pro Projects" Folder be that you are referring to?
    Sorry for the confusion.

  • New hard drives coming. Update projects now or later?

I want to upgrade to FCP 10.1 (from 10.0.9) at the earliest. I travel and shoot video abroad but return to the US to do major editing. So my current hard drives are small: I have media and backups that I've been moving back and forth between drives. I use three Lacie Little Big Disks (2x1TB 7200rpm; 1x2TB 5400rpm) and a Drobo Mini (2 sets of 4x1TB drives). I've also put all my Camera Archives on a 3TB WD USB 3.0 drive.
I have new desktop drives coming right after Christmas. I am considering upgrading to 10.1 now. I will use Event Manager X to update projects and their associated events one at a time (following the guidance of Philip Hodgetts' article on FCP.co).
My question: Is it advisable to go ahead with the upgrade now and then move libraries to the new drives? (Or would it be better to wait until the new drives arrive?)

May as well do it now. You can move the libraries at will whenever you want.

  • 'updated projects' are gone.

During the update to Final Cut Pro 10.1, FCP decided to make one library of my entire external hard drive. My projects were in an Updated Projects event, but now they are gone.
I can see them in the .fcpbundle on the external hard drive in the Updated Projects folder, but I don't find the way to get them back in the library. How can I do that?
I tried 'import' and 'update projects and events', but both couldn't find any projects.

I have an Old Final Cut Projects and Events folder on a back-up drive somewhere.
    Screen shot:

  • Cannot See 'Updated' projects in iMovie Library

Recently updated to iMovie 10.01 and then 10.02.  Originally had the Updated Projects event and the Finalized Movies Event showing in the iMovie Library, but they are no longer there.  I can 'see' them in the finder, looking at the iMovie and the show package contents....
Is there way to get iMovie to 'see' these events again?
PS: more info,  this orginated while I was cleaning up some of my events and clips, putting them in the trash.  I mistakenly put these in the trash, but hit the undo button and they seemed to reappear. Next opening of iMovie they were gone (but still in the finder as above).

Try to find them in your medialibrary. iMovie folder, your library, right mouse click - "open a contents package"

  • Problems updating projects to new versions of Premiere (CS5 to CC and CC to CC 2014) Memory consumption during re-index and Offline MPEG Clips in CC 2014

I have 24GB of RAM in my 64 bit Windows 7 system running on RAID 5 with an i7 CPU.
A while ago I updated from Premiere CS5 to CC and then from Premiere CC to CC 2014. I updated all my then current projects to the new version as well.
Most of the projects contained 1080i 25fps (1080x1440 anamorphic) MPEG clips originally imported (captured from HDV tape) from a Sony HDV camera using Premiere CS5 or CC.
    Memory consumption during re-indexing.
When updating projects I experienced frequent crashes going from CS5 to CC and later going from CC to CC 2014. Updating projects caused all clips in the project to be re-indexed. The crashes were due to the re-indexing process causing excessive RAM consumption and I had to re-open each project several times before the re-index would eventually complete successfully. This is despite using the setting to limit the RAM consumed by Premiere to much less than the 24GB RAM in my system.
I checked that clips played; there were no errors generated; no clips showed as Offline.
Some Clips now Offline:Importer  CC 2014
Now, after some months editing one project I found some of the MPEG clips have been flagged as "Offline: Importer" and will not relink. The error reported is "An error occurred decompressing video or audio".
The same clips play perfectly well in, for example, Windows Media Player.
I still have the earlier Premiere CC and the project file and the clips that CC 2014 importer rejects are still OK in the Premiere CC version of the project.
It seems that the importer in CC 2014 has a bug that causes it to reject MPEG clips with which earlier versions of Premiere had no problem.
It's not the sort of problem expected with a premium product.
After this experience, I will not be updating premiere mid-project ever again.
How can I get these clips into CC 2014? I can't go back to the version of the project in Premiere CC without losing hours of work/edits in Premiere CC 2014.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

To answer my own question: I could find no answer to this myself and, with there being no replies in this forum, I have resorted to re-capturing the affected HDV tapes from scratch.
Luckily, I still had my HDV camera and the source tapes and had not already used any of the clips that became Offline in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
It seems clear that the MPEG importer in Premiere Pro CC 2014 rejects clips that Premiere Pro CC once accepted. It's a pretty horrible bug that ought to be fixed. Whether Adobe have a workaround or at least know about this issue and are working on it is unknown.
It also seems clear that the clip re-indexing process that occurs when upgrading a project (from CS5 to CC and also from CC to CC 2014) has a bug which causes memory consumption to grow continuously while it runs. I have 24GB RAM in my system and regardless of the amount RAM I allocated to Premiere Pro, it would eventually crash. Fortunately on restarting Premiere Pro and re-loading the project, re-indexing would resume where it left off, and, depending on the size of the project (number of clips to be indexed), after many repeated crashes and restarts re-indexing would eventually complete and the project would be OK after that.
It also seems clear that Adobe support isn't the greatest at recognising and responding when there are technical issues, publishing "known issues" (I could find no Adobe reference to either of these issues) or publishing workarounds. I logged the re-index issue as a bug and had zero response. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced these particular issues?
This is very poor support for what is supposed to be a premium product.
Lesson learned: I won't be upgrading Premiere again mid project after these experiences.

  • Bug in 10.1: Updating projects from a folder tree

There's a bug when updating projects that are organized in a tree of folders under Final Cut Projects.
I had a bunch of projects organized under a subfolder under Final Cut Projects. After the update to a library, each project appeared under the subfolder under Updated Projects as expected. However, a duplicate of each project also appeared directly in the Updated Projects folder. When I tried to delete either of the duplicated projects, it erased its duplicated partner, leaving no trace of the project.
The only workaround is to make sure that all projects are situated on the same level under Final Cut Projects.

    Hi !
I found out where the problem is. On startup Default setting is checked in this is problem. When you uncheck this option, encoding list is not repopulated. So you have force it (by closing Preferences window down and opening it again) and then it works. Coworker of mine disovered this quite accidentally. This should be fixed, by either populating list always, or repopulating list after option is checked. I suppose first option would be better.

  • What is the 'Updated Projects' folder in iMovie 10?

I installed iMovie 13 and I'm totally confused by the new layout. Specifically, it's not clear to me what happened to my projects and events.
I see three top levels in the sidebar:
*All Events: This seems to show all my imported events.
*All Projects: This seems to show all my improved projects. So far so good.
*iMovie Library: This seems to contain all my imported events (how is this different from the All Events?). It also contains a folder called 'Updated Projects', an event which contains all my imported projects (why are my projects in an event?? And how is this different from the 'All Projects' view?)
The old layout was so simple - Events and Projects. The new layout is utterly confusing. Any help would be appreciated.

I really find what they've done to be very confusing.  Even if you don't compare it to how things used to be in the last version.  Why is a movie Project inside an Event?  I have 6 Events from a recent vacation.  Each location that I visited is logically an Event.  It was something that happened in a point in time.  I believe that's a reasonable definition of an Event.  Now I want to make a "vacation movie" and it wants me to pick which event it's associated with.  Well, 6 of them... now what?  So I have to create a container Event just to put the movie inside it?  That makes no sense to me.  I rate this new approach a D-.

  • FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
    On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
    Thanks for any thoughts... Barry
