FCP 4.5 Image stabilizing

Hi All,
I use FCP HD 4.5 and i'm looking for the best plug-ins to stabilize the image. The one built into FCP is pretty good but seems to freak out a bit.
Anybody recommend a third party plug-in?
It's mostly footage of somebody talking at a podium.
Thanks,
Paul

I will second the recommendation for iStabilize. It would be nice if it was built-in to FCP so you didn't have to export and import the footage. But it works well and I like the controls. It seems to be important to be able to balance how big a residual image area you use versus the stabilization time filtering, as well as selecting which parts of your clip to avoid due to extreme motion.
It is supposed to work for both interlaced and non- interlaced. I have only used it in non-interlaced HDV.

  • FCP X not image stabilize HDV footage

    I have a Imac 27 inch 11,1, I5.
My problem;  after successfully imported HDV clips.  I placed it on the timeline and selected analyze and fix "image stabilized".  After the back ground rendering circle went from blue to green, and the image seemed slight zoomed in, as expected in the viewer.  When I play it,  I noticed no IS at all.
I tried adjusting the IS controls via inspector.  Still no IS, the image would zoomed in a bit more or less based on what I did in the inspector. But no IS.
    Anyone with this problem??
I'd read elsewhere online that someone said that FCPX does not IS with interlaced clips and his work around was to changed his field dominance from "Upper" - HDV to "0" then FCPX would do IS.
Is this true?? If so, how silly is that...

You are right, there is the suspicion that image stabilization is broken for interlaced media. However, I've also seen reports that you can get it working for interlaced clips, as long as you don't do any analysis while importing, and only do the analysis inside the timeline. But it sounds like that's what you did.
Hopefully this is a bug that Apple will fix.

  • FCP shows WHITE image for DVPAL Quicktime movies

I have a strange issue on a friends FCP system
    FCP 5.1.4 OSX 10.4.11
Final cut pro shows no image ( it's white ) in Final cut pro viewer. Audio is fine.
Normally this is the case when a codec is missing but they are captured DVPAL movies and the source files play fine in the quicktime player. FCP shows DVPAL compression on item properties.
Already thrashed the preferences/caches. No difference. If the codec really was missing it wouldn't played in the quicktime player right?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Make sure theat FCP's Viewer window is in RGB mode - NOT Alpha.

  • Image stabilizing

i just wondered if FCP does this as good as motion does or wether its worth exporting the clips to motion for stabilizing and then bringing them back into FCP. Or is it worth getting a plugin like coremelt.
    thanks for any help

re Motion vs. FCP in this regard, my understanding (which appears to be confirmed in this related thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2246688&tstart=0)
is that in the new Motion (v4), as well as having much greater control, only the portion of the clip being dealt with +in Motion+ has to get analyzed, whereas in FinalCut the entire media file needs to be analyzed before the SmoothCam filter can be applied. If you've got short Timeline clips connected to significantly longer media files, this alone might be a reason to send things over to Motion.
    Just a thought.

  • FCP 6 Still Image Export HD squishes

I work at a professional facility that just "upgraded" to FCP 6. Looked good when I first saw it but there is a flaw in the still image export. This is something I am required to do often. We are working with HD footage DVCPRO HD 1080 23.98. Exporting a still that maintains aspect 16:9 was tricky but in FCP 5 we found that if you export QT conversion - Still image - PCT and step in to the options to use the DVCPRO HD codec we would get a true 16:9 image. Not so any more. In FCP 6 this no longer works - the image comes out squished into 4:3. NOT GOOD. If i export a qt movie of the same frame then open that qt in Quicktime and then export movie to picture it works fine. PLEASE address this.

I usually export stills using the export queue, and I too have noticed that FCP6 now seems to de-interlace and resize the stills to square pixel dimensions automatically. I can't find any way to control or deactivate this option - anyone know?

  • How does Mercalli compare with FCP X's Image Stabilizer?

Last night we were shown some videos which had been stabilised using Mercalli.
    http://www.prodad.com/home/products/videostabilizing/300391667,l-us.xhtml
The steadiness was excellent but as we were not shown the original footage there was no way of judging the improvement.
Has anyone used this system and if so how does it compare with FCP X's stabiliser?

    aside Luis' excellent reply:
    * consider to upload your video to YouTube and set it there to 'hidden' or 'privat'. By eMail, share its URL. Many ISP have a max for eMail attachements, and video is huge by nature...
    * poor-man's-Compressor is the free tool Mpeg Streamclip.
It offers in its various Options lots of settings, you usually would do in Compressor. Just share a Master from FCPX, open it in Streamclip and then 'export' it in any compressed form you like, e.g. reducing resolution, frame-rate, bit-rate. Less convenient than Compressor, which would allow to add your very own settings/'destinations' into FCPX... but cost-free.-

  • I thought Apple fixed FCP X performance and stability...!

Though I was experiencing this with 10.0, it seems to still be the case with 10.0.1!
Whenever I'm rendering, exporting or optimzing media in FCP X, I'm unable to open or work in any other application. Even attempting to open something as simple as Safari has proven to be a task... The dreaded beach ball spins and I find myself force quitting the apps.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    I'm working on:
    Early 2011 17" MacBookPro
Intel Quad Core i7 2.3 GHz Processor
    8 GB RAM
Oh by the way, here is a snapshot of my CPU and memory while export from FCP X.

Interesting, I'm now transcoding using compressor.
Here is a snapshot of my CPU & Memory usage:
I can comfortably open and work with most apps, however as soon as I open FCP X, THE BEACH BALL APPEARS......!
    This is so annoying.

  • FCP crash - looking for stability and speed and some logging advice

This is our first time on Final Cut and we're learning as we go.
Is there a good source (posting or web page) where we could learn how to set up the machine to make it more stable and fast?
Also, we're doing our transfers for a doc that we're working on. Is there a good place that will walk us through how we should be setting up the machine as well as logical logging and capturing?
    Thanks in advance.

Not sure about free resources, but there are a couple DVDs out there that are good places to start:

  • Dragging a large still image from the browser into the viewer crashes FCP

Okay, I've not seen this problem until just a couple days ago but was wondering if it was just me or if everyone has this problem? I've found a work-around, but let me explain the problem first.
I'm creating a growing up photo montage. I scanned all of the pictures myself at 300 dpi (as I've always done in the past) and saved them as TIF files. Some pictures as relatively small, i.e. 3.5 mb is size and do just fine, but it appears anytime I drop a picture into the viewer in preparation for the the timeline, it will crash FCP if the image file is any larger than about 5 or 5.5 MB. Now I know there is a limit on the resolution of a still and it shouldn't be any larger than 4000 pixels in either direction, but that is not my problem, the problem appears to occur with large files. I've used large still files before in past projects without any problem, so this is why I'm stumped. I've went as far as trashing my preferences, but that didn't change anything. I've even tested a still image from a past project that was something around 9 MB (or was it 19 mb?) in any case, it also crashed FCP but... I've used that picture before in past projects without any problem. I even created a new test project just in case my project file itself had a problem.
My work-around is to simply drop the still image from the browser directly into the timeline, thus bypassing the viewer. This works every time without a hitch. I can even double-click on the still now setting in the timeline to load it into the viewer so I can add effects or keyframes or whatever without any problems (thank goodness). So, has anyone else experienced this problem or is it just me?

Is this image saved in a colorspace mode that is anything other than RGB?
CMYK & Grayscale images will cause problems.
Some light reading regarding your choice of 300 dpi: http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.html
Unless you plan on panning and zooming your images, the best procedure is to use one of the video preset templates in Photoshop and paste your content into it. Scale and position using the Transform controls. For best results save as a TIFF without compression. Don't forget, always in RGB colorspace.

  • FCP Image size

When placing a 1280x720 (960x720) dvcpro HD clip in a sd 720x480 timeline, FCP scales the image to 75% making it letterboxed with black on top & bottom. When rescaling the clip to 100% the image appears full screen with the sides of the image cropped off. This is fine, but in reality the image isnt scaled to 100%. If you do the math an image that is 720 Pixels high, would only need to be scaled to 66.7% to reach the 480 pixel height. After effects scales this why, Where do the pixels go? Or is this just a false scale and if you scale to 125% in motion tab, you are really not losing any resolution? What gives here Apple?

I guess Im not asking the right question, The real issue is what does the scale tab in the clip viewer really tell you, try this test. Make a Photoshop square pixel 1280x720 image. Drop it into a dv 720x480 comp. Dont let FCP change the sequence setting! Final cut will give you the image at 56.25. When you make the vertical fit it reads 75%. Now take the same image into a dv 720x480- Anamorphic comp. The scale now reads the correct image size of 66.7%. Now take a nonsquare dvcproHD clip(960x720) and the values change to 100% in the dv comp and 75% in the Anamorphic comp.
Im technically not changing the vertical pixel height of 720 in any of these images.

  • Images in Canvas Distored - Odd Error?

Oh great and wise FCP ones. Why would my Canvas window in FCP be showing images/clips with green, diagonal crossbars and has the image of a yellow exclamation point on top indicating an odd error? I took a snapshot, figured this would make things simpler.

    That solved it, spot on!

  • Just upgraded to FCP 5.1 and get no signal from Panasonic DVX100

    Hello all.
I am an experienced FCP user. Just did a fresh install of 5.1 and now I get no connection with my dvx100 (the original not the "a" model). I get remote control, meaning when I go to capture I can play, rewind, etc, however FCP sees no image and I cannot import or export to/from video. When I startup FCP says it cannot locate the exterior device firewire NTSC 720x480.
What is going on? Is this camera no longer supported with FCP 5.1? It worked fine with 4.1.1
    Please help!!

    Welcome to the forum.
You will find by searching that this question (deck/camera not recognized after upgrade of FCP/QT/OSX) is asked (and answered) multiple times a day.
Searching before posting is a great way to utilize the forum and to gain much faster answers to your questions.

The problem most commonly is the Quicktime installation becomes corrupted in some minor way during some upgrades. A full quicktime reinstall most often solves the problem.
    Heres how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Settings of images? (rendering)

I've made a slide show using .jpg pictures and the rendering is taking a long time. I looked into the solutions to rendering problems in this discussion board and they all say to match the source settings to the sequence settings. But how do I match the sequence settings to the image setting? Thanks.
    -Angela

You don't need to do that with still images that you import. Only with video and audio clips.
FWIW, FCP seems to work best with images in TIFF format. But no matter what image format you choose to import, make sure that they are all in RGB color mode - NOT Grayscale, Indexed or CMYK.
Another common cause of problems with still images imported into FCP is the image resolution; if the resolution is too high, you will see sluggishness and increased render times.

  • Screen Capture to FCP

I am working on a howto video for my college. i need to show students how to get rid of viruses on their pcs. i'm doing all of the editing on FCP but i need to take screen captures of the pc to show them how to start and remove viruses on the scan. I'm having a hard time getting the images to look good in FCP after i do a screen capture at every step.
which leads me to my question...
At what monitor resolution should i be doing my screen capture at and at what dpi should i be using? what image format does FCP prefer the best? how can i make clean images in FCP where you can read text in the image.
    Thanks!!

"the image i'm capturing from the winxp machine is at 1280x1024 and the image looks really pixelated when i import it into FCP5......."
Pixelated or 'blured'? Doesn't really make sense that reducing an image's size would cause it to pixelate, normally that occurs when you increase the size.
Have you tried doing a prieview render to quicktime to see if it's only a display problem within FCP? Have seen issues like that before but the end product has been pretty good, even though FCP shows the images as being choppy.
If you have a decent image manipulation program (like photoshop) try reducing the screenshot's size before importing it into FCP, that'd be the way I do it. I see that you have said you 'tried making the image that exact resolution' but it didn't seem to work. How did you re-size the image?

  • How to import tif sequences into FCP

We did some painted animation on After Effects, save them as TIF sequences and want to import them into FCP. Does anyone has any tips on how to do that?
It seems that saving them as tif sequence it will preserve more quality when importing them into the movie (live-action) in FCP or AVID, etc.
    Thanks!

I know... and also I could have saved them as a quicktime movie straight from after effects. The reason I decided not, is that I was told that the tiff files in sequence would have better quality (including when using blending upper and lower fields) when importing them into a final composition at the professional studio, where we will put the image and the sound together.
The professionals that recomended me that use AE in PCs, them they go to a editing facility and import all the tif sequences (usually they use AVID) into their videos. I wanted to do this in our FCP and go to the editing facility with all the image ready.
I thought that FCP could import image sequences. I do not know if it would make any difference just having all in quick time.
    Any tips anyone?
