FCP 4.5HD and JVC Pro HD

I'm trying to import footage on a JVC ProHD (mini dv) tape from a JVC BR-HD50 deck so I can cut it on FCP 4.5HD. My goal is to cut a sample to add to my web site.
FCP 4.5HD has DVCPRO HD 720p24 in easy set up but no ProHD. I guess because this format came out after this version of FCP.
Does that mean I must upgrade to PCP6?
I read it is also possible to down convert from High Definition to DV standard which can be captured into FCP through i.Link (Firewire) and edited using the DV Easy Setup. I assume I'd lose the HD quality but will it be noticeable on the web?
Also can you explain how to do this? I think I would then be able to cut on FCP 4.5HD.

Yes. FCP 4.5 does not support HDV...HDV came out after FCP 4.5 was released. And the applications that were used at the time to capture HDV for that format are no longer supported apparently. LumireHD and HDVxDV.

You can tell the camera to output a DV signal. And yes, there will be a quality difference...but not something that would be too noticable by the time you compress it for the web.

You have to look in the camera manual for that information.

I'm currently using a PowerMac dual 2.0 Mac and am running FCP 4.5HD without any problems ... PERIOD! However, I'm now considering a move to the next level of Power Macintosh (the dual/dual core model that's currently available on the Apple Web Store) and just wanted to ask has anyone had any problems with the newer systems running the older version of FCP 4.5HD? Not to sure I want to fork over those big bucks to upgrade to FCP 5 unless it's necessary.

Thanks for your input ... looks like I'll be moving up to FCP5.0 a bit quicker than planned. Hacks of anything always come back to bit me ... AT THE MOST STRESSFUL TIMES! ... and since I'm into wedding video development on a full time basis ... I don't need anymore STRESS.

FCP 3.0 and QUICKTIME PRO - compatable?

I am running FCP 3.0 on a G5 under SYSTEM 10.3.5 and everything is stable.
Now if I upgrade to the NEW QUICKTIME PRO am I in for any problems?

If I remember correctly, FCP 3 ran fine under 10.3.9. However, FCP 3 will not run under 10.4 unless you do an upgrade install of 10.4 over 10.3 with FCP 3 already installed.
There has been enough gnashing of teeth and cries of pain from folks wanting to run FCP4.5 under 10.4/QT7, I shudder to think of the potential backward compatibility issues with FCP3.
To the OP, your best bet is to stay in 10.3 and QT 6 until you are ready to go to the current version of FCP.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred. There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one. So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?

FCP 7.0.3 and MacBook Pro Retina Display

I am a videographer, I shoot on DSLR and edit with FCP 7.0.3.
I have recently got a brand new Pro Retina Display Macbook Pro.
I installed my software, including - FCP7 via migration - I had to do this as there is no DVD drive in the macbook pro - it was installed - from my old Mac Book (black 2008)
FCP 7.0.3 is not opening? It gets to the loading page and goes as far as the top tool bar showing up - but will not open so that I can actually use it.
I got this mac to edit on the fly and take my jobs away with me and do not want to use Final Cut X - I am used to and very happy with FCP 7 interface and operating and don't have the time to learn to use other editing software - does anyone know how I can get the my FCP 7 software working on my brand new machine?

Here's a short tutorial video about how to move back and forth between your base computer and the on-the-go machine. Very important info about which things can be copied within Finder and which things MUST be copied from within FCP X. Best wishes.

Did you purchase Final Cut Pro from the Mac app store? Or install it from disk? If from disk, you may have installed it on all machines using the same serial number, and using all of them simultaneously violates the license agreement. If you purchase from the App store the licensing is different and that may not apply.

FCP 5 and QT PRO

Well, I'm a happy man! Final Cut Studio just arrived today. So long FCP 3...Right now I'm close to finishing a project and I want to complete it on FCP 3 before installing FCP 5. however, I made the mistake of upgrading to QT 7, so my QT Pro key doesn't work that came with FCP 3 (QT 5 Pro Version). Now I really need QT Pro. Is the QT PRO 7 key included with the software. I can't find it. With FCP 3 there was a separate serial number for QT PRO. Is it possible to install QT 7 PRO but not Final Cut 5?
The reason for all this is I downloaded an MPEG move from the Internet I want to incorporate in this montage. From the finder there is sound, but when I import it into FCP 3, there is no sound. I was hoping to import it and then export it as a QT file in FCP, as I cannot do it directly from QT without the Pro version.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as the deadline is fast approaching.

FYI, I went ahead and installed FCP 5. Yes QT Pro was activated. I opened up FCP 5. I saved the project file as a copy and flushed the render queue. I can still run both versions using the original Proj. File with v3 and the copy with v5. No problems. THough, I think I'll do a reinstall of the OS this weekend and just instal FCP 5 because I've heard that is the best way to optimize your drive and I can do without the clutter....

FCP and Soundtrack Pro music licensing and music cue sheet procedures

Okay, so we made the movie, and we marketed it and it has been sold in several geographic territories. Now I have to make up a music cue sheet. What do I put on the cue sheet for Apple Loops and FCP and Soundtrack Pro files that I have used for music? I believe they are royalty free, which is great. But I'm supposed to identify the music cues with writer, publisher, and society (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) What does an entry for those resources look like? It's really hard to find this info in the documentation for FCP and SP. Thanks.

Interesting question - We don't use attorneys - too expensive, and we never listen to 'em anyway, so the info didn't come from a lawyer, ha ha. But I've seen several examples of music cue sheets, and they all contain the same information, including composer, publisher, society, timing, etc. (After all, that's the purpose of the cue sheet - to see that the artists and producers get paid for their work). Of course, if the example comes from ASCAP (as that one does) or another society (BMI, others), they are working to make their job easier, but they are the societies - they are the ones who can object if they don't like it. And they have substantial power to penalize a producer for not doing what they want. But here's the thing: there's huge tradition in Hollywood, and the rule is (and the contracts say) that if you don't provide everything on the distributor's list of deliverables, they hold your money until you do - and one of the things on the list of deliverables is a music cue sheet, and every example I've ever seen (and I've seen at least 20) asks for the same information. So that's the answer as to "who told you that?" Is is possible that I'm being led down the garden path by ASCAP and the movie industry in general? Sure, but every source I consult agrees that this is the reality. I wish I could avoid it, but as I understand the situation, I have to do it, and it has to contain the info, or we'll never see our dough, ha ha. But my question remains the same - how do I get that info for the "royalty-free" music library attached to FCP?

Workflow between fcp and soundtrack pro

i am working on getting the workflow between final cut pro and soundtrack pro right for several weeks now, and i have to say, i expected more.
not that all the special gadgets aren't there, they are just not working the way they describe them in their manual or other sources.
am i the only who has made such experiences working with these tools?
for example: if i want to send a single clip from my timeline to soundtrack, there should be the possibility to have in and out points, so that final cut doesn't send the whole clip (even the parts i don't use ) to soundtrack. cool feature if it would work! no matter what you do it always sends the whole clip to soundtrack and therefore saves the whole file with all the changes and effects. and we don't talk about 8 or 9 MB here. a single clip of 1 minute, altered with EQ, takes up to 80 MB to save!!
another problem from my point of view is the exchange of whole sequences. the whole thing heavily depends on the use of markers, because without them someone working with soundtrack doesn't even see were the cuts are, which makes it nearly impossible to synchronise sounds. markers have to be placed at every single cut.
i could go in like this, but first i would like to know if i mist some fundamental thing about the use of these two pieces of software.

It depends on how you are working. If you've sent over something as a Multitrack project then you have to export the mix and edit it back in as it doesn't update in the same way. A STP audio file shoul update upon saving.

IMovie 11 and JVC HM100

worked great- but now only a few days later- I am now unable to select the video files (they are now grayed out) to import. Was there an update to iMovie or QuickTime that broke compatibility? I have checked this on both my MacBook and MacBook Pro...
I have removed the components, redowloaded them and replaced them- but nothing works. QuickTime is still able to play them, same with iPhoto, but iMovie is not able to import or recognize them as a mov to be imported...can anyone help or has this happened to anyone else recently?

The solution I ended up doing was using a machine that has FCP on it. BUT, I found out later for those who do not have FCP- there are opensoruce versions of the Codecs that will allow iMoive 11 to view and edit the video files.

Codec for JVC Pro HD GY-HM100U

Hi All
Would it be a reasonable assumption to say that the QT's JVC Pro HD GY-HM100U would use the DVCPRO HD codecs (1080i or 720p) in FCP?
And does anybody know how the transfer process from the SDHC cards will work? Similar to P2, using the Log & Transfer window, or is it a drag and drop operation?
I do know the cam is not ready for release until April, but I have a client who is very keen to use this cam, and I'm trying to set up a workflow for him. Thus, any information will be much appreciated.

Just what I was after. Right at the end of the video the show an FCP workflow. You can work straight of the card using File>Import, or you can use the Log & Transfer window to copy the media files to your media drive.
It also shows that you will use the Sony XDCAM codec.
Very helpful indeed...now all I have to do is start saving up some money...

Installation of FCP on desktop and laptop ....

Guys this really isn't such a big deal and so sorry to be going over old ground here but before I install FCP on my laptop as well, can I just confirm Apple's ruling on this and am I right in thinking I don't register the software when installing it the second time on the laptop? (Makes it feel a bit like if I'd got the software illegally)
Apple states ....
+Apple allows you to install on the software on two computers as long as you own them both and one is a laptop and the other is a desktop. You cannot install it on two laptops or two desktops. The MacBook and the iMac are obviously fine. Also, both computers cannot run the software on a network at the same time+.
Both my iMac and MacBook Pro are in the system so I don't understand why you can't be given two serial numbers (maybe identical accept for a -1 and -2 on the end of it ... or A and B or maybe DT and LT) so you can in fact run it at the same time should you wish. In fact on my first enquiry to an Apple consultant, he was under the impression this was the case as he said he had seen two serial numbers on the documentation but once I'd bought it I could see the two serial numbers were identical! You can't obviously be at home and at work at the same time but if I'm working on FCP in the morning, forget to log off, go to work and log on and then risk one or the other being bumped off and losing unsaved material.
This would happen very seldom but I still don't understand why this situation, even though you have paid top dollar for the software, is treated like your second installation is a big secret. I may have this totally wrong and have misinterpreted it all but I'd love to get someone's feedback.
By the way only had the software for a week and geez I'm lovin' it. So many hidden extras that you don't get in FCE. I wish though that I'd read somewhere the installation takes nearly 8 hours! 8.30pm to 3.45am in a deserted (and possibly haunted) workplace! Eeek!

Peter, I would think that it is painfully obvious that the license is intended to allow you to dual install on a personal desktop and personal laptop as a convenience so that you can use either but *not both* simultaneously. What is difficult to understand about that? If you need two instances for productivity reasons, meaning to run both simultaneously, then you should buy two licenses. If your concern is that you might simply forget to quit the version running at home on your laptop/desktop then don't worry about it. You won't be prevented from running the second copy unless you are on the same network subnet. Other than that you should just learn to save regularly (and turn auto save on too).

Problem about .xml file from PPro CS5 to FCP with RED and P2 file.

I have create a Project in Premiere Pro CS5.
I import the RED file R3D or P2 file XMF and editing my media.
From menù File i select Export to "Final Cut Pro XML.."
I open FCP and Import file XML but the media are not reconnect.
"Warrnig: Non-critical error were found while processing an XML document.
Would you like to see a log of these error now?"
I want see the log file and...

Hi Dennis I re-format my MACPRO 8 Core and I installed Final Cut Studio Suite and CS5 Premium (no CS4)
I install Blackmagick driver Decklink 7.6.3
If I open the After Effects and setting preview card blackmagic, I see the preview in external monitor.
If I open the Premiere Pro and setting preview, I don't see the blackmagic card but the second monitor, DV....etc.
In Premiere I see the blackmagic preset, but no the preview card.
I have a second question.
About Red file I want editing in Premiere Pro and i whant color correct in Apple Color from FCP.
My problem is: my color program crash when I send file form FCP to Color (random mode)
The sequence is:
I import file red in PPro5 -- editing file --- export file xml.
Close the PPro5.
Open FCP import xml (no re-link media)
Save de project in FCP
Select sequence and send to Color.
In this moment the Apple Color crash.
I shutdown the MAC.
I power-up the MAC
Open FCP select the project and send the sequence to Color.
Color see the project but no media.
I re link the media and I editing in color my media.
Why Apple Color program crash?

Logic Pro 9 Compressor and Soundtrack Pro

Hi,
I have recently installed Mackeeper in my iMac. After everything I opened Logic Pro and it couldn't open. So I thought it could be an issue from Mackeeper, I requested a help from them and they asked me to send my report and I sent to them. Later on I was recommended to uninstall the logic pro, so when I reinstalled the logic pro the following components Compressor and Soundtrack Pro were deselected, it was in gray and I couldn't find out how to install it. The other issue is that the installation was successfully completed without installing the Logic Studio Audio Contents 1,2,3 and Demo Content was also not installed
Is there anything wrong I did?

Interesting; and who would have thought ! What does Logic and FCP have to do with each other being installed. I have FCP running (w./ all) and Logic Pro 9 and perhaps your Logic Studio 2 is not the same. I have no idea.
I'm hoping that I can export the LPro files into FCP ez along with exporting them to WAV or formats that a PC can use; if anyone has heard of problems with that. ?
