FCP 4 xml export

I tried to get help on a blog but my last question wasn't answered.
This is the thread:
I’m trying to export an XML file from FCP 4 to Premiere CS5. After I name the file and save it to my external hard drive, I am only able to get about 50% of the way through the export process before FCP quits and asks if I want to send a report.
I read on a blog that the file can be exported, but only with Apple XML Interchange Format version 4 (or better); my only option is Version 1.
How can I export this file, since it fails to work with version 1?
Reply:
XML was in infancy when FCP4 was released so it is not surprising that it isn't working. Plus you will need to see if you can open it in a more recent version of FCP before re-exporting in the correct XML format.
EDL is probably the only way you will be able to move this project. What is the codec of your media? Or are you planning on recapture in CS5?
I wanted to open the timeline in Premiere to do more editing.
Frame Size: 720 x 480
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Most Quality
Frame Rate: 29.97
Reply:
Best bet is to get the old FCP project to open in Final Cut 7 and then it should open directly into CS5.5. There is no surety that a FCP4 project can be opened by FCP7 however. Apple are terrible at backwards and forwards compatibility.
What you are trying to do can only be done via EDl as far as I know and then relink media if it is in a format that CS5 can read.
So do I have to purchase FCP 7 in order to import the timeline into Premiere?
My last question wasn't answered. So do I have to have FCP 7 in order to get my timeline into Premiere?

Or find someone who has it and will do it for you. Yes, you need v6 or 7.
This is the Final Cut Pro X forum BTW.

• PP7.1.0. XML Export missing REEL names - help!

Problem with FCP XML export from Premiere Pro 7.1.0
It's screwed up my worflow for editing Premiere from Proxies created in resolve.
All worked fine in PP CS6
Workflow
1. In Resolve: Create Quicktime Proxies from DNGS created with Raw Magic via 5DIII
2. Import my proxies into Premiere CS6. Each Proxy comes in with the correct 'Tape Name' that matches the Reel name of the Clip in Resolve
3. Edit in premiere
4. FCP EXPORT .XML >>
5. Opens perfectly in Resolve. The editng Proxies arere-linked to the RAW DNGS inside resolve, using the <REEL>names (you can see them inside the attached XML).  All is good.
But with Premiere CC 7.1.0
Opening XML in resolve gives me 'Failed to Link Because timecode extends do not match'
world of pain - I can't manually relink 100's of DNG in resolve.
Examning the xmls - Premiere CC 7.1.0 seems to have stopped exporting <REEL>
Could anyone please test/confirm with Premiere CC 7.1.0 & Resolve 10
I have attached the 'good' and 'bad'  XML's. [see link]
Anyone having similar problems???
How can I downgrade to PP CC 7?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401700/FCP%20EXPORT%20PROBLEMS%20-%20MISSING%20REEL%20 NAMES/FCP%20EXPORT%20Missing%20Reel%20Names%20with%20PP%207.10..zip

Has anyone found out a workaround for this?  We're just about to head into 3 back to back projects!
We're still getting issues when trying to relink original Cinema DNGs from the proxies coming from an XML out of Premiere CC 7.2.1
I can manually link them from the media pool, but have to do each clip in the timeline individually!
Apart from re-exporting the Cinema DNGs as ProRes 422 HQs and linking these to the Premiere timeline (which king of defeats the object of recording RAW), does anyone know any work arounds?
I take it this is still an issue with Premiere not exporting Reel / Tape names in the XML.
EDLs do not work for us either.

• Trimming XML export from FCP

Is it possible to trim the sequence XML export? FCP exports the entire XML sequence even when using Mark In/Out. I just need portions from the sequence to facilitate text extraction from my sequence chapters... if it helps to know why. Thanks.

Duplicate the sequence...trim out what you don't want to export. Then export the XML.

• Premiere Markers export and import: Roundtrip via FCP XML not working

The objective of my project is to create a sports app that records markers and saves it in different formats of XML / CSV that I can then import in different NLE packages.
I have already succeeded with Vegas Pro but also want to support NLEs for MAC-OS.
In order to approach this analytically I have exported a very simple project with 1 sequence including 1 clip and 3 markers (with length zero and length > 0) and exported it
in FCP XML from Adobe Premiere CC and do a round-trip import it via FCP import into Adobe Premiere CC.
This round-trip does not work. Any insight why or any support what other mechanism will work?
Thanks
Thomas

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?

• Please help. Color Crashes on "Send to FCP" or export XML

This error has just started happening and it's driving me nuts.
I'm using FCS3 and I've got all the latest updates.
I'm grading 60 sec commercials (source is XDCAM EX HD 1080p and I'm rendering in Pro Res HQ 1080)
I did 3 this morning with no probs.
Now on my 4th; Color "quits unexpectedly" every time i try to export XML or send to FCP.
I haven't done anything differently.
After trying and crashing 3 times, I restarted the computer and tried again.
No change.
I thought that maybe the file is corrupt so I started a new project and did the grade again.
Still no joy.
Anybody got any ideas what's wrong?
Thanks

I also am having this problem. I am running a Macbook Pro with 2 gigs of ram, OS 10.6.2, FCP 7.01 and Color 1.5. I am working on a film which is is in small 4-5 minute segments with nothing fancy, DVCPRO HD-1080i60. There are some B/W tiff files at the start of each segment. They are all rendered fine. • Audio slipping on XML export to FCP?

I've edited a project is Premiere CS5.5, and now I want to bring it into FCP for some tweaking.  When I export the project using 'XML for FCP' the video comes through fine, but all the audio clips are 10 seconds later than they should be.  I've tried a lot of variations on XML exporting and importing between the two programs and nothing works.  The sequence in Premiere is 'DSLR' (the footage is from a Canon 5D).  I've tried making a new timeline with different sequence settings and exporting, as well as trying a lot of different sequence import settings in FCP. (FCP is 7.0.3)
I cant just export the audio as one track, because I need it editable in FCP.  Also, other projects have exported via XML just fine, so it seems to just be this one file with the problem. I even tried it on another machine and it had the same results. Is there a setting somewhere that I missed?  Is there a standard sequence setting for importing Canon 5D footage from XML into FCP?
Is it just a bug?  This is a professional job, and I'm running behind because of the week I spent trying everything I could think of to fix this problem.  Anyone have any idea?

" Do you have any specific questions we might answer?"
Yes, as I stated in my first post-
1. The audio is slipping 10 seconds per clip on an XML export from Premiere to FCP.  Has anyone has this problem and know how to solve it?
also
2. Is there a tutorial somewhere that details how to keyframe audio levels per audio clip on a time line (not just a whole track at once)
If anyone has any ideas on either, I'd really appreciate it.

• XMl Export not working as it should...

Hi there guys
Have been owrking on this concert for the last 4 days. 4 Seperate Color Projects 3 have an average of 600 clips and the last one has around 1200. There are also 3 dissolves on the last sequence. All were created in Color by using the Send to Color command from FCP. They are all rendered and the first 3 are back in FCP (Using Export XML from Color)and relinked with no problem to the graded media. This morning we tried to create the XML for the last sequence, when loading into FCP it completes the import but the timeline is empty. THe size of the XMl is also suspect (3.4MB) where the other ones average around 20MB.
Now we still have all the media and it's graded, but have been unable to get a proper XML from Color so we can relink back in FCP.
Any suggestions will be welcomed.
Regards
Patrick Morgan
www.bluegiraffe.tv

You are well in excess of the comfort number with 1200 or so events. That may or may not be the actual problem, though. "Dissolves", or maybe you mean keyframed transitions(?), don't usually pose any obstacles, either.
If the Send to... FCP isn't working, then the other possibility to start the ball rolling, is to attempt to brute force load the XML file with no apps running, so that neither FCP nor COLOR are resident. Find the correct XML, right click (default is open with COLOR), change to FCP and give it a go.
This approach surprised me a couple of days ago. I had a render crash. Usually, that means COLOR won't remember it did anything and one is obliged to start the render all over again. But I exported an XML, opened it and lo and behold, all the grades appeared up to 88 which was "offline". The rest were original source media. SAVE. Went back to COLOR and loaded the render queue with everything from 88 to 143. Render. Successful. SAVE. And then, for the h&LL of it, I sent out another XML. I thought I'd hack the two sequences together. To my wonderment, the sequence loaded intact with all grades resident, even though 1-87 had no status back in COLOR. Interesting.

• How to import FCP XML to FCPX?

The only problems people seem to be having is importing FCP XML into Adobe or other third party software. I can't even import it from one computer with FCPX to another computer with FCPX!!
The following error message occurs when I try to import the XML file;
The document "project name.fcpxml" could not be opened. The location is not available.
In fact I get the same error message when re importing the fcpxml file into the project that created it!
Any help would be great. Thanks.

I can now import the fcpxml from one computer to another HOWEVER I still have a big problem.
The footage that I shot was 1280 x 720 at 50fps - so I can create a smooth slo mo in post. In my 'original' project, I am usiing a 1280 timeline with a 25fps base so that when I 'retime' and 'conform speed' I get exactly what I want - the 50fps shot playing back at 25fps, thus creating slow motion.
When I export the xml and import it into another computer, there is a problem - The timeline is correct - 25fps 720p resolution HOWEVER the media that was previously 50fps 720p is now 25fps 1920p....
How/why does this happen and how can it be fixed?
Presumably it is xml import settings but I'm so far unable to achieve this...

• Description of elements and attributes in XML export.

Does anyone know where I can get a complete description of all the elements/attributes in the XML export from FCP. I found the DTDs (V 1-3), but it only gives me the names and overall structure. I need to know what the content means.
in particular I want to automate if I can- using XSLT and XSL-FO - the production of standard reporting that I am required to produce (manually) in a documentary production course.

its all on Apple's Developer site

• FCP XML to Flint - Problems with Time Remap

My Flint artist and I have had some problems with the XML Export and Import that we cannot figure out. The XMLs from FCP sequences that have variable speed Time Remaps applied show up on the Flint with those particular clips with the wrong in/out points in both the source and record times. Also, the speed ramp info doesn't show up properly.
We have followed the Flint manual to a T on importing correctly. Anyone encountered this or know a solution? Especially why it's throwing off the in points. It screws the whole timeline when that happens.
Thanks in advance.

The TimerEvent target is a flash.utils.Timer object and does
not contain a reference to your lblTimeUntil label.
Recode
trace("Seconds Left" + evt.target.lblTimeUntil.text);
to
trace("Seconds Left" + lblTimeUntil.text);
and you will not blow up anymore.
This code will display the count up till refresh.
public function onTick(evt:TimerEvent):void {
var minuteTimer:Timer = evt.target as Timer;
lblTimeUntil.text = minuteTimer.currentCount.toString();

• FCP XMLs into AME watch folder

Hi, recently Adobe Media Encoder added support for FCP XML files. I am exporting FCP XMLs from Premiere into an AME watch folder but no job is being created in the queue, despite having 'Auto-Encode Watch Folders' turned on and 'Start encoding automatically when idle for:' set to 0 minutes. If I manually add the same FCP XML file to the encode queue, the job is created and processes correctly. Has anyone been able to make AME process FCP XMLs automatically using watch folders?
The point of doing this is to potentially free up workstation resources by doing all rendering on dedicated AME machines, allowing quicker turnaround of the kind of short, simple edits that our users do.
This is on OSX Mavericks, Adobe CC Premiere 7.2.1(4) and Adobe Media Encoder 7.2.0.43.
thanks

• Importing FCP XML

importing FCP XML, I get the error "The importer reported a generic error", Why? How do I import correctly? I did file> import, but got the error I noted.

Hi,
I am having a similar problem. I am trying to transfer FCP7 projects to Premiere CC. I did this once today with success. Exported xml from FCP and imported to Premiere without issue.
Later today I updated Premiere CC and my other Creative Cloud software. Since then I am having difficulty with this. I am performing the same steps and even tried importing through the media browser as suggested above. My error message suggests that something was corrupted. I checked out the path the message was showing me and there is no such file and I don't see why there would be. I have all the scratch disks set to a external hard drive.
I have attached a screen shot. Thank you!

• FCP XML Import on Premiere CS4.0.1 Windows

Great work on implementing FCP XML import on CS4.0.1. <br /><br />We have all our media mounted on a network share. On the Mac exporting a sequence from FCP and then importing into Premiere on the Mac works no problems. On Windows this is a problem, Premiere prompts for each of the media items, which is pretty painful to re-link again. <br /><br />Looking at the FCP XML this appears to be down to the <pathurl> area of the XML. These are typically file://server/Volumes..... etc... which doesn't translate to any of the file mountings on Windows, which are D: E: F: etc... mounted drives. Is there any way to help us? We can write a script to manually modify the XML. Can you explain how Premiere Windows likes to read these Mac URLs?

Thank you all for your help. It still leaves a bit of a workflow problem. <br /><br />Basically we have some people ingesting / organizing content and maintaining on a network share. Duplicating the media is slow and moving it all into one volume is not too good either as it breaks all the relationships for others. Re-linking is good, but doesn't work if the material is spread across subdirectories and giving a key to link all the media together looses some of the benefit of having the export from FCP in the first place, it's just as easy to re-make the edit.<br /><br />We are only using cut edits, so this is quite simple. For users on the Mac using FCP and handing off to Premier it works fine, the problem is we want to hand off to Windows Premier. It's ok to run a script over the files to change the XML naming of the <pathurl> which seems to be causing the problem, but how to describe this in the Windows world?<br /><br />Thanks for all the help.... anyone from Adobe with any ideas?<br /><br />The problem as I see it is how to identify Mac OS mounts to a Windows version of Premier on XML import.

• FCP XML

Hi there,
I want to log (create clip data, notes and subclips) for an existing FCP project. The Project already has bins set up in FCP and I want to retain those. The reason I'm looking at doing this in Premiere is that I don't have access to FCP.
According to this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WSd9957a95a81082eb28f05af5126718c47be-800 0.html an XML export from FCP should retain the data I'd need so all good there.
My question is, if I export an XML from Premiere to import into FCP will all the bin, clip data and subclips be intact?
Cheers,
Kim

You're welcome. I don't use this workflow too often, but I know there are many more people using this now as they transition from FCP to Premiere Pro. Note that it's not a 100% perfect process, especially with complicated sequences; bins, clips, and the like should be OK. If you run into any snags, post back as I'm sure more seasoned "translators" could give you a hand.
Good luck!

• Crystal Report 2008 SP2 & InfoView: Custom XML Export doesnt work

Hi,
I have created a Crystal Report .rpt and want to use the custom xml export function to output a custom xml file. For that, I created a custom transformation file (xsl) and imported it into the .rpt . On the client machine, if I open the .rpt with Crystal Reports 2008 SP2, and select to export it using the custom xml output, all runs fine. (under SP1, only half the file was created...)
If I upload the .rpt file to Infoview (server-side: BO Enterprise 3.1, SP2 as well) and schedule it, I can select xml, and then my custom xml as output format, but I am getting the error message u201EUngültige Exportoptionen" (="invalid export options"), in the instance history. No output file is created. I use file system as destination. Other output formats like .pdf and .rpt work fine and files are created.
Ideas:
-Are there any more settings needed on the server (e.g.CMC - Crystal Server Jobs, other Processes, ...) so I can schedule the report and successfully create the custom xml format file as output?
-Do I need to upgrade to a specific SP or FP on server-side so everything runs smooth?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Florian,
I'm having the same problem, have you by any chance found a solution?

• FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!

I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
Wade

Hi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there.
