FCP 5.1.4 stopped working on 10.6.8

Hi all,
I'm stumped. I have both Early 2008 MP (8-core Intel Xeon) and mid 2011 MBP (intel i7). Both running 10.6.8 and FCS 1 (updated through ProKit 5.1).
on my MBP, the FCS1 and all its components (FCP5.1.4, DVDPro 4, etc) launches fine.
on my MP, recently there's been some OS degradation issue, so I had to do a clean install of the OS. But when I reinstalled FCS1, it won't launch. When I open FCP5, it will start the launch sequence, but after it gets to the usual "some FW cannot be found" error message that I've been ignoring ever since I got it, it just aborts.
In the past, I have reinstalled (clean install) of both 10.6 and FCS1 and never had a problem. I don't know where it went wrong. I just don't understand why it works on my MBP and not MP anymore.
I've read up on a lot of the FCP5 vs 10.6 issues on this forum. based on this, I'm going to attempt another clean install starting from 10.6. or should I start from 10.5, install FCP, then upgrade to 5.1.4, then upgrade to 10.6?? (didn't have to do that before, so still doesn't tell me what is going wrong). on this current bad installation i didn't install QT7 until after FCS was installed. so next time I will install QT before FCS and see if that helps. when I launch QT, it does recognize "Pro Apps" registration, so.. it's not like it's being ignored.
another funny thing is after I install ProKit 5 update, I can't install ProKit 5.1.. the Prokit 5.1 installer says "yo need ProKit 5.0 to install". so it also seems for whatever reason the ProKit 5.0 isn't taking..? (installer says it successfully installed)
Then I tought to upgrade FCS for $299, and just found out that they phased out the upgrade path unless you shell out full price either on eBay or *may be* Apple. BOO!
I don't use FCP much, but have used it occasionally in the past. so if I can get it working, I would like to.
any insights? in the next round of re-installation, I'm planning on this:
1. wipe out HDD
2. clean install 10.6.0 (that's the installer I have)
3. update OS to 10.6.8
4. install QT 7
5. install FCS1 (It is one of the first-generation upgrade when FCS first came out, so not sure which version FCP5 installs)
6. update FCS1 as per Software Update list (SU no longer lists ProKit 5 or 5.1 anymore. why is that?)
any other ideas?

I've tried everything. bombed the OS (erase the root drive), did clean-install, did full install of FCS1... used the software updater to update the FCS1 (only wanted to update Pro apps update 2006 stuff.. not the prokit 5 or 5.1... )
and it worked ONCE. I was so happy I got it fixed... and had to do permission repair (thanks to the java updaters)...
and it wont' work again. DVDPro, Sountrack, motion, etc all others launches ok, and so far seem to function ok (haven't really run it through doing an actual project, but at least it launches, where FCP aborts after loading RT Extreme stuff)
I don't understand... :-(
and yeah. one can say "don't do permission repair" but that shouldn't have affected it (FCS component didn't show up for anything that needed fixing)
I managed to buy an FCS2 upgrade on eBay at a decent price (not inflated $$ like the FCS3 is going for these days!). Waiitng for the seller to ship me the copy, and update.. and hope it works...
if not, something's gone really wrong with my machine. Did DIsk Warrior (v4.3), checked and verified/repaird all HDD on the machine (i've got 3 in stalled on the MacPro)...
in the mean time, I'll just keep using the one on my MBP (that has essentially an identical setup, same OS, same updates, just different machines) and limp along...
just... weird.

Automatic import in FCP has stopped working...

Hello-
Usually when I hook up my AVCHD camera to my MacBook with FCP X open, FCP will automatically open the import window, convert the files to quicktime and import them. Today, not only is the import window not automatically opening, but it won't recognize the video files on the camera. I am having to convert each file to QT with Smart Converter, which is taking a great deal of time (certainly more time than I'm used to!).
Anyone know how to restore the automatic important/conversion functionality for FCP X?

All right then, I guess I'm being unclear or am looking to the wrong place to help - all I know is that, up until today, whenever I attached the camera and turned it on, the import window would open automatically and an automatic file converstion would take place. Today, when I hooked up the camera, nothing happened. When I opened the import window myself, all the files on the camera were "dark" (not compatible files) and I couldn't import them. I am now manually converting each individual file off of the memory card, which is time consuming and I don't know why it stopped working the way it did before.

You need to export a self-contained video from FCP 6. Import the self-contain video into Compressor 4.

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8), masking in QuickTime 7Pro has stopped working. Has anybody experienced this? Is there a work around? Can I use FCP to add masks to video?

Masks disappeared in old videos where I had previously and successfully added a mask, and I could not longer use QT 7Pro to add a mask to a new video. MacBook Pro (March 2008 Model) AVCHD has stopped working from my SD5

I'm seriously perplexed here. I have just upgraded my MBP to the latest top spec 15", done a data migration and my FCP 6.0.2 had stopped working with my Panasonic SD5! Bizarre!
So - complete erase and install of 10.5.2 and re-installed FCS2 and....still won't work! Have tried everything. Why has it suddenly stopped working with a camera is used to be fine with.
The SD card is mounting. The .mts files are good (Voltaic HD will see and convert them). FCP 6.0.3 seems to be fine in all other respects. Open Log & Transfer window though...and nothing!
AHHHHH! Just about to go traveling for three months and can't use my camcorder!!!!

Perian 1.1 does not help, though I see a lot of people have used it to get the SD9 working. I have an SD5 which did work fine and now doesn't. As an update to the situation, I have now discovered that it will actually see my SD5 if I leave the Log & Transfer window up for about 4-5 minutes. The clips just suddenly appear and I can ingest them, however, if you close the L&T window down and open it up again - you have to wait another 5 minutes for the clips to appear. It is not the camera (I have tried it at work) - freshly installed 10.5.2 (erase and install) and fresh FCS2 (doing incremental updates from 6.0.1 to 6.0.3 and checking in between) The only thing I can think of is that these new MacBook Pro's have firmware version MBP41.00C1.B03.

HELP- My DVD Studio Pro stopped working

I recently upgraded to leopard and my DVDSP stopped working. This is what I see when I load DVDSP.

I tried reinstalling DVDSP (first uninstalled - then reinstalled)
I can't open anything. Also, my FCP wont open log and capture, but otherwise seems to work fine. I suspect my graphics card isn't up to the task now that leopard is running. I have the ATI 9600 64MB version.
Anyone have some insight / help?

Camera suddenly stopped working HELP

I have been editing with a Canon ZR-80 on my G-4 laptop. For no reason, that I can determine, the set-up stopped working today. I hooked everything up and when I opened FCP it said it was not seeing a device. I made sure the camera was in VCR mode, cable secure, on etc and everything was fine. I continued and tried to capture anyway. When I pressed play the camera started playing the video, but you couldn't see it on the log and capture screen. It just says, Device not available.
Please help!

if so ...
To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
Reboot

VPN stopped working after OS X 10.9.4 update

Hi,
I had a VPN configured for work which has been working forever but stopped working after the 10.9.4 upgrade.
Very basic setup:
L2TP over IPSec
Server address filled out
Account name filled out
Authentication settings
User Authentication - password kept empty, so it prompts for password
Machine authentication through certificate - certificate selected
Advanced
IPv4 over PPP
IPv6 automatic
When connecting after the 10.9.4 update after I entered my password and hitting connect it always says: the L2TP server did not respond .... what changed?

After 2 submissions Compressor suddenly stops working

After 2 submissions, about an hour later when I submitted another sequence from FCP, nothing happened. Though it's weird. There's no little window showing the frames counting up, but the ball is spinning over FCP. But I can work in Compressor. That shouldn't happen if things are right, should it?
The only difference is I added Chapter Markers. Is this another one of those 'known problems' with FCS 2?

Choose "Reset Background Processing" from the Compressor menu. Then restart your machine. Go back to FCP and resend that job. It sounds like either the Compressor processor or QMaster (or both) stopped responding.
Also, you may have a piece of media in your FCP timeline that QT doesn't like. You can work around this by exporting a QT reference movie form FCP (File > Export > QuickTime Movie) and then take that into Compressor as the source media.

Printing to Video deteriorates and finally stops working

I've been experiencing problems with Print to Video & Edit to Tape over the past two weeks and now it has stopped working altogether. The Deck is a Panasonic DVCPro AJ-D455p. Log & Capture works fine. Edit to Tape was the first thing that stopped working. then Print to Video would send the audio but no video, then it wouldn't work at all so we were playing content directly from the timeline and recording manually. Now we can't even do this. I'm trying to identify if this is a hardware or software issue. (the deck plays fine to the monitor) Any ideas? (At first powering down the deck, restarting FCP seemed to help. no longer.) I've also checked and rechecked the A/V settings for output, refreshed the deck through FCP etc...nothing helps on the settings side of things.
PowerPC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2) FCP studio 5.0

A strange and bizzare series of events has left me baffled re: FCP. About a month ago communication with the Panasonic AJ-D455 began to deteriorate. I was not able to edit to tape, then could not print to vid, so was posting to tape playing off the timeline. Log and Capture worked fine. My external monitor would not mirror the desktop no matter what my AV settings were. Then Log & Capture stopped working. I've run FCP rescue, I've trashed preferences, I've checked the FireWire, I've checked the deck. I've reformated the entire computer, reinstalled FCP...still no luck.
Other random facts. After I trashed the preferences, the system worked normally for about 30 minutes. After I reinstalled FCP the system worked fine for 1/2 day.
Any suggestions on what to do, look for, next?
Also, the deck works flawlessly with another machine. The FW cable is also fine.
Not sure what to isolate next...

FCP7 and Compressor 4 stopped working together

I upgraded OS X to 10.8.5 a few days ago, and ever since FCP7 and Compressor 4 have stopped working together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

lots of things may work for a while, but will not work indefinitely. Do some searching here for people using h264 quicktimes in fcp. they may work for a while... compressor 3.5 is included with the fcp7 installer so you might want to go back to it.
But first, how were they working together? Were you able to send from within fcp?

FCPX stops saving and undo stops working

I just installed FCPX 10.0.3 on my 27" iMac i7 with 12gb RAM running OS 10.7.3. After about 5-10mins of editing, the Undo function stops working. If I quit and restart FCP, I lose most of my work, as though autosaving also stopped working after a short period. This happens constantly and I can't get any work done.
I tried trashing my Preferences but that didn't solve it. Strange thing is, this problem doesn't occur on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.2.
HELP?

This bug was, indeed fixed in 10.0.2 but I there are still occasional reports of the problem.
Since the 10.0.3 update, FCP X is working brilliantly on my Mac with Lion 10.7.3.
Here's what I would do if I had the same issue you have at the moment.
First, I understand that if you duplicate your project, that 'manually' saves a copy of your work to date, so (if it works for you) it could be a temporary workaround.
I think there's some conflict on your system, so I suggest you create a new (admin) account on your Mac and try working from there. If it works, understand that it's only kicking the can down the road - you really should do a clean reinstall of your Mac system - but that's up to you.

Play around playhead stops working

FCP 10.1.4, OS 10.9.5; the play around playhead function stops working after a couple of minutes of editing. Relaunching fixes it but then it stops after awhile. Any ideas?

Two things to try: 1) preferences, hold down option and command keys when you launch and then delete; 2) Window>Revert to Original Layout.

Sound stops working until i restart.

I currently have the satellite a505-s6965. I bought it back in 2009 but last year my hard drive crashed so I replaced it with a 1tb SSdrive and upgraded to windows 7 in the process. I havent had any other issues until maybe about 2-3 weeks ago when i noticed after so long my sound stops working. I can't play videos, music or anything. Itunes wont even show the song playing at all. I have done everything, my drivers are all up to date, my bios is updated. I have tried headphones and none of that changes anything.
However...if I hit the volume up button on the laptop, it will beep through both the speakers and headphones but no other sounds will play. But if I restart it will all go back to working forr so long. Sometimes when the sound works i may sound a little cracked or weird.
Any suggestions on a fix for this issue?

Hi. I see that this question has gone unresolved since Oct. I'm having a similar problem. Also using FCP 7.
I have a video, recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30. I captured the video and found that the sound was recorded too high. There was an audio recorder, Zoom H4, recording at the same time, and it had a much better level, so I imported the .wav file to my project. I spent about 2 hrs cutting the video and the audio, syncing the audio to the video and making cuts between the songs that were played to edit out the between song banter and other stuff.
All seemed to be working fine, and then at some point, I clicked the "L" key to move forward, and there was a loud pop, and the sound went away. Whenever I press the start key, or one of the J, K, L keys, it click/pops and no sound is available.
Any help with that?

Compressor stops working at audio stream

I've been having some Compressor problems, which I think I have narrowed down, at least in this one instance to a corrupt audio file. I submitted an hour long self contained QT movie 2 nights ago, and it successfully encoded the MPEG 2 file, but stopped when it came to the ac3 file. I de & re-installed Compressor from the original FCP 2 discs, so I'm now running 3.0, on OS 10.4.11, on a G5 dual 1.8 machine.
So last night I submitted the same QT movie that had stopped compressing the night before, and it did the same thing again- successfully encoded the video stream, but NOT the audio. Compressor stopped working in exactly in the same place as it did the night before. This morning I used Jon Chappell's app Compressor Repair, and am up and running again, compressing another movie that seems to be working just fine.
But, I still have the problem with the particular movie with bad audio file. From another forum, someone had a similiar problem 3 years ago with a corrupted audio file. Which I think is what my problem is now, for at least one video I'm trying to encode.
So the questions are: How do you find the corrupted file, what do you do? How can I encode the audio stream for this file?
Of course I have a deadline for Monday, so any suggestions are most welcomed!

Try exporting a self contained QT movie which only includes the audio from your sequence. Set it to be "current settings"... will then match your sequence settings. If it exports OK, just put this file in the sequence for compression.
Micheal's solution is much the same actually as mine... When you use the sequence settings, the QT is nothing more than a QT movie wrap around the aiff.
QT is a container for media files of any kind actually.
