FCP 5.1 Specs

Need to install FCS1 (FCP 5.1) on a G5/Dual 2.5. What version of the OS (I'm assuming I should stay with Tiger) and Quicktime should I be at?
Thanks!

You can go to 10.4.10 or 10.4.11...both work fine.
QT version should be 7.3.1...might be able to pull off 7.4.1, but 7.3.1 is a safe bet.

  • FCP 6.04 spinning its wheels on simple render and driving me round the bend

    Hello all:
So everything was going swimmingly... normal work-flow, nothing weird, not asking it to render Hi-Def NTSC anamorphic into SD SECAM 4:3 with a twist of lemon. Just plain old simple rendering of basic effects and filters, etc.
So, for some reason my Mac in league with FCP has decided that these are arduous tasks. FCP spins its wheels (you know, the psychedelic spinning circle that makes you immediately go, "oh f##k!"
After about 20 seconds of teeth clenching spinning it suddenly wakes up and goes, "oh, well that's not so hard..." and then completes the render in 2 seconds.
This is has not happened before... but been going on now for about 2 hours.
What is going on? Please help! I am on the usual crunch deadline... and this is driving me NUTS!

Better post more about your system...
    Post the exact versions of:
    OS
    FCP
    QuickTime
    system specs
Scratch disk configuration... is it local? etc.?
Also post the exact format you've captured and are working with.
Also let me know how you got to the versions of OS and FCP... did you perform a clean installation lately? i.e., rebuilt your startup disk from the ground up? One thing that can cause havoc is "upgrading" instead of "erase and install" of a new OS or version of studio...
The odd thing is that it spins but renders it OK anyway? weird indeed, never seen this, but sure want to find out why!

  • Impossible to run FCP on iMac?

I just bought an Aluminium dual core Intel iMac. I was just about to buy a copy of FCP but the spec says that I need an AGP or PCI Quartz Extreme graphics card. But my iMac won't let me upgrade the graphics card!
Is the inbuilt graphics card insufficient to run FCP? There is no work-around?

I have a 24" Aluminum at home that I use. I run Studio 2. The only thing I did not install was Color because of system requirements and recommendations from the boards here.
I maxed out the ram to 4gb before I even fired the thing up. My aluminum is running Tiger 10.4.11. My Final Cut is currently at version 6.0.2. I have had no problems running Final Cut. Motion was a little iffy but that was because of a bug which I think I cleared up with an update.
Don't plan on running multiple streams of uncompressed HD footage, but it will work very well for you. I would suggest though that you get a decent external firewire 800 drive. I purchased one of the CalDigit ones. It runs great.
    Good Luck.

  • PLEASE HELP........import 720p to FCP HD, but it is small in the screen.

So i import 720p footage to fcp. The specs of the footage are 1280 x 720, 24 fps.
compressor - photo - jpeg, pixel aspect: square.
    I set up the project.
frame size 1280 vs 720, hdtv720p (16:9), Pixel aspect square
    Quicktime video settings : h.264.
When the footage is in the viewer it is does not fill up the screen(black box around it). When I export the video is small with the large box around it.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Setting up a cluster with a mini

    Hi!
Given the amount of work I am doing lately I am debating about getting a mini to do some of the batch processing work. I have checked FCP Pro's specs for that and I know that the Intel Core Duo will work. But my question is that it also says in the requirements that Final Cut Studio is not supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA. Since I am not using the system for editing work but just to help do some of Compressor's job will it still work?
Also has anyone tried this before? I am looking towards getting an iMac or something as space is limited.
    Thank you.
    PowerMac G5, 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

For those who are curios about this, you can setup what's called a Quick Cluster that allows for Distributed Processing on a local network.
Go under the Help Menu in Compressor and choose the Distributed Processing pdf for instructions.

  • How can I slide detached audio left/right in sample increments, rather than frame increments?

I exported a detached audio file from FCP X to Pro Tools for processing, and I have now imported the processed audio file back into FCP X.
I need to align the processed audio clip with the original audio clip. I am using View --> Zoom to Samples, and can see the amount I need to slide/nudge the processed clip in the Timeline. The problem is that the mis-alignment is smaller than a frame. This sounds small, but it is visually clear when you play the video/audio that the video and audio are not aligned.
    Question:
How can I elect to slide the audio left/right in the timeline in increments of the audio samples, rather than in increments of video frames?
Since FCP X allows you to view the audio in Samples, it certainly must somehow let you slide/nudge the audio in Samples........I just haven't found it.

Let's be clear about one thing. There is no way on earth any human being can percieve a one frame discrepancy in sync at a frame rate of 24fps or higher. Going to increments smaller than one frame, while it can be done, makes no difference to the way the media is viewed. Presumably your viewer will not have the benefit of multiple synced waveforms as a guide.
It sounds like you have an alignment problem in ProTools. This should be a incredibly simple to fix in that application.
The problem may laos be one of sample rate difference. What are the specs of your export audio file from FCP and the specs of your imported replacement file coming from ProTools. They should line up exactly if the sample rates are identical.

  • Poof and it's gone!

I am a video manager for an international charity. What that really means is I have to fulfil all the production roles on a tight budget. About a year ago we purchased a Mac Pro from a well known UK Mac/video specialist to edit HDV footage in FCP.
The spec of the Mac is as follows:
    Mac Pro - 2.8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    4GB Ram (2 x 1GB {presumably Apple} + 1 x 2GB Kingston module)
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3
    1 x 320GB 7200rpm Serial ATA + 3 x 750GB 7200rpm SATA 16MB Cache HDD
AJA Kona He SD/HD PCI Express Video Interface
The system was preloaded with Apple Final Cut Studio 2 and Leopard OS X (currently using v10.5.6.)
Note that a AJA Kona card was purchased not only to allow component breakout to a HD TV, but also to assist with HDV handling (at least that's what the supplier informed us).
When the Mac first turned up everything was fine for about 3-4 days of solid use. Thereafter it started to crash more and more regularly, up to 10 times in the average working day. By crash I mean I would get the spinning beachball for a few seconds and then FCP would vanish and I'd be left with the standard "The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly" dialogue box.
I lived with it for a while and then one day FCP just wouldn't open and so we went back to the suppliers who eventually took it into their workshop and did various hardware tests.
Sadly I was without an edit machine for nearly 3 weeks, which really knocked my budget. None of the tests revealed the fault and eventually they formatted and reinstalled everything and handed the Mac back to us saying 'see how you get on now'.
Since they couldn't find any faults we were charged for their investigations. They did say if it continued they would have it back in again for even more intensive investigation and we'd get a refund if the fault turned out to be hardware related.
When the Mac came back it was fine for about 2 or 3 days and then the crashing started again. I kept a log of the circumstances of every crash.
A good 80% of the time they occured in this scenario. I will have about 2-3 sequences open/tabbed on the timeline. One will be my main edit the other two will have all my rushes/footage split across them for me to scrub back and forth through. It is often when scrubbing on any of the sequences that I get the beachball and subsequent crash. The other 20% of crashes have occurred during rendering, applying a video filter to a clip, exporting to QuickTime, closing a sequence tab.
The crashes tend not to occur in the early stages of a project, i.e. when blocking clips on the timeline to create a Rough Cut. It's only when I start applying transitions and effects that they tend to occur.
Overall my conclusion would be that they're linked to intensive processing of larges amount of data. But here's the interesting thing on a regular basis the crashes start half way through the day and will occur much more frequently after the first daily crash.
Quite a few times I have looked at the error report that is sent off to Apple. It's mostly gobbledegook to me but this line did stick out "EXCBADACCESS (SIGSGV)".
I would really appreciate it if someone can give me a clue to what's behind all this.
    Thx
    Nigel.

    Hello there, Noddy Dog,
Crashes are difficult to analyze, but let's begin:
the crashes start half way through the day and will occur much more frequently
    after the first daily crash
That sounds like a memory leak, i.e. a software problem.
It is good practice to do a reboot after a crash.
Are you running the most recent version of FCS, QuickTime, etc.?
Are you running the most recent version of the AJA driver?
    http://www.aja.com/html/supportkonaLHeswd.html
Is the KONA card properly installed?
    http://www.aja.com/html/supportkona_recsys.htm
Are your disks configured as a RAID? If so, what kind?
    Are you editing in HDV?
You might consider capturing to ProRes rather than staying in HDV.
Here's how when using Firewire; the information may be useful to you:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php
HDV does ask a lot of your processor, which is one reason FCP offers
the option of capturing direct to ProRes.
I hope this is of some help.

  • FCE making use of RAM

I am looking into doubling my RAM on my 15" Macbook pro. I currently have 4GB of memory and am looking to buy these 2 4GB Ram sticks on Amazon.com>> http://www.amazon.com/MacBook-MC721LL-PC3-10600-1333MHz-PARTS-QUICK/dp/B004PC53I 8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1323363601&sr=8-3     I am just wondering if FCE will make use of the extra memory? I have heard rumors that some versions of FCE will not make use of it.

FCP X is a 64-bit application, so it "can" take advantage of more than 4GB RAM but whether or not it actually does in real life is another matter ...
I have seen a few reports from users who track memory usage and so far none has reported FCP X actually using more than 2GB RAM.  I have also seen some white papers that claim you should put in 48GB or more and that FCP X will use it (obviously implying a Mac Pro, not an iMac or MBP).  But they don't actually go as far as reporting actual usage ... just the authors' recommendations.
You should also consider how closely your MBP meets the other FCP X technical specs  especially graphics support.  I can tell you that you won't be happy with FCP X if your MBP only has the basic Intel GPU   (GMA xxxx or HD 3xxx).
I will again reiterate if you do not already have adequate external backup & external working storage, your money will be far better spent solving those needs rather than bumping up the RAM at this point.

  • Color gives empty time line

Ive just exported some footage to color the same method a I have done for years .
File >send to>color. But this time when color opens up the timeline is utterly empty. Can anyone help?

Sorry its been a while. But that didnt work at all.
I also tried a new external hard drive, setting FCp to the specs I believe are correct and still when I send to color its empty. See below.

  • Macbook Pro Specs for FCP

I am a pro photographer interested in working with video. I have 2 questions:
    1. Best way/forum to learn FCP?
    2. Ideal specs on Macbook Pro for FCP?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The specs are clearly listed in the FCP marketing pages. They are conservative and you will need external drives.
There is no best way to learn an application as deep and complex as a video editor. You explore the net, buy some books, decide what your level of competence needs to be in order to bill your clients.
There is a direct comparison to your chosen profession. How did you learn to be a professional photographer? There's more to taking pictures than having decent equipment and known how to launch Photoshop. I started shooting when I was 11 years old in 1965 and I needed 15 years to become adept with the physics of light and the chemistry of film. Digital shooters, generally, have no clue about how their tools work. How does one teach them?

  • Which specs for FCP and which camcorder?

    Hi guys,
will be using the macbook for editing gigs/events/music video's etc. what specs would be best?
and any thoughts on a camcorder? currently got my eye on sony hxr mc50e but wanting to know if you think any others are better?
defo needs to be HD, portable, SD preferred over MiniDV, Needs to have good low light recording and good audio. Max budget is about £1300
    hope u can help
    many thanks

If, despite all advice to the contrary, you still go for the MacBook Pro then I'd recommend the base 17” MacBook Pro (MBP) configuration, with 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option, and an additional 1 GB RAM (to make 3 GB total).
    Why the 17” model?
Because when editing you need as much screen space as possible. Yes, it is bigger and heavier than the 15”, but I think that it’s larger and higher resolution display is worth that sacrifice.
Why the bigger but slower 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option?
Laptop drives already have a much smaller capacity than their desktop cousins and those little drives, inevitably, fill up quickly with all your stuff!
And of course, you're planning to get an external media drive too, right? If you don’t have one then your internal disc will be eaten up by clip media in no time (especially if you opted for the smaller faster internal disc).
    Why 3 GB RAM?
Well OK, thats an expensive option, but seriously, if you can afford it the money is well spent.
I'd also strongly recommend the extended AppleCare Protection Plan.

  • Min specs for FCP

i am going to be upgrading my mac soon and want to know what i should be looking into..i mean theres a chance i might be able to get it used off Ebay.i dont want something that i have to upgrade immeadity you know.do you need dual processors??

It really depends what format you are editing. DV? No. Single Processor G4 will be fine.
    Here are the requirements:
    System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors
512MB of physical RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM or more (2GB recommended)
AGP or PCI Express graphics card
Mac OS X v10.3.9 or Mac OS X v10.4 (or later)
    QuickTime 7.0 or later
1GB of disk space required to install application; additional 10GB required to install all optional templates, loops, content and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks)
    DVD drive for installation
Note: Final Cut Pro 5.0.3 or greater is required for PCI Express–based systems.

  • FCP X & Adobe Master Collection specs....HELP!

What specs would I need to run FCPX and Adobe Master Collection on my '07 Mac Pro? It was just gifted to me (YAY!), but I'm not sure what I need to upgrade it to. Here's what I'm working with currently:
    Mac OSX 10.7.5

Samsung 840 SSD for the system is the best $100 investment in performance.
Some 1-2TB WD Black for media, library and data storage
    Backups
A 900W 1500VA UPS for system, modem etc
In some ways it makes more sense to go out and buy a 2009 4,1 and go from there instead but you can upgrade and gradually make some changes to get it as current and good as possible.
Yours is a 2006 1,1 - the 2007 2,1 was an 8-core 3GHz but they share the same FBDIMMs, 1333MHz fsb. The 2,1 has firmware to support the 53xx series Xeon processor was all (use to be you almost had to upgrade the 1,1 firmware if you wanted to use a 5300 when replacing the 51xx cpus).
The graphic and RAM and even add on some scratch disks, system boot drive and drives for media and projects are all really what I see as "musts."
Lots of tips and articles about CS6 and upgrade performance (though aimed at newer systems)
