FCP 5.1 Won't Open

Situation:
I installed my new universal 5.1 two days ago. Opened two old projects and re-saved them as 5.1 projects. Everything was running fine.
Came today and tried clicking the FCP icon in the dock to begin a new project. The program acts like it's opening up, AKA the startup screen comes up, shows my name & serial number, etc. but after it's done, instead of proceeding to the typical blank slate, "Final Cut Pro" disappears from the menu bar and I'm back in the Finder.
Thing's I've tried:
1. Restarting
2. Repairing Permissions
3. Trashing FCP prefs
4. Re-installing FCP from the FCS DVD (not deleting FCP, however, just "re-updating")
What I'm running:
10.4.6, PowerBook G4 1GHz, 1GB RAM, FCP 5.1
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Cameron

Sorry guys, I hadn't trashed ALL pref files.
It's working now.

  • FCP Project file won't open

    Hello,
An FCP project file I worked on this past Friday suddenly won't open. When I try it immediately gives the helpful "general error" message. I tried opening the autosave files as well, with no luck. I tried renaming the project file and manually adding the .fcp extension, but still nothing. I'm not sure why it's doing this, since nothing unusual happened in the last few days. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    FCP 5.0
Also, does anybody know where I can purchase an unused version of the FCP 5.0 bundle? I can't upgrade because of OS and processor restrictions on my old G5. And I can't buy a newer mac right now. All of my related FCP programs are starting to act buggy, and I don't have the install cds anymore. Any ideas?

I can't upgrade because of OS and processor restrictions on my old G5
Huh? According to the requirements for FCP 6, it needs A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor and Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.5 or later. How does your computer not fall into this range?

  • FCP 5.0 won't open

I just installed the FCP studio. Now when I try to open FCP it closes as soon as it opens. Also, when I try to open a project that I had previously, I get the error-10660. I think the projects won't open because they were created on FCP 4.0. But i don't know why FCP 5.0 automatically shuts down when I open it.
    Suggestions?

This means there are two installations of FCP on your network that are using the same serial number.
Have you installed the software on more than one machine?
    of not ...
Did you purchase this version from Apple or an authorized reseller?
    If not ...
Are you in a university setting?

  • FCP 4.5 won't open

I recently received my 17" macbook pro.
I ordered it with max'd ram, and the 7200 rpm 100 gig drive.
    I just installed fcp-hd. . . . . just like I had on my 15" Titanium 867.
I went to open Final Cut and it says that Final Cut can't open, I think it said that it needs an AGP graphic's card. I checked and found my macbook pro has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 installed. Won't FCP work with this card???
I figured I ordered something wrong when I ordered the laptop but when I went back to the apple site, it did not give any graphic card options when ordering the laptop. I can't even find an AGP card listed on the Apple site
So I'm assuming that I need to have the graphics card replaced, which I have never done.
Can you point me in the right direction.
I am most likely going to upgrade to FCP5 soon, so will that software require a special graphics card?
    Thanks for any help.

You HAVE to upgrade to the Universal Binary version <http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/>
The version you have is NOT compatible with Intel Macs.

  • FCP 6 suddenly won't open.

    Hi all,
After not using it for perhaps a month, I went to open up FCP today and when did so was prompted to enter my serial number. Although I thought it odd it went on to ask me to Register the software which I asked to do later. Afterwards FCP quit unexpectedly.
Since then FCP quits unexpectedly straight after attempting to load up. I don't even get the 'loading box' anymore.
Can anyone explain why a version of FCP that has worked faultlessly for 6 months + all of a sudden refuses to work?
The rest of the programs in the suite that were installed at the same time (LT, motion etc.) still all load ok. I can't think of anything else I have installed since that would conflict with it.
    I'm trying to run it on a Powermac 2 x 2.66GHz with 7GB RAM with OS X 10.5.4 installed.
    Any help would be appreciated.

As long as you have the project files and the media (or can recapture) you should be good to go once you get fcp working again. Worst case scenario, backup project files on external drive (i'm assuming your media is already on an external drive) and reinstall OS and apps on your startup drive.
Also, do a search here for deleting fcp preferences, there are a few utilities that will do it for you. There are preference files in several places and using one of these utilties insures that you get them all. Also, repair your disk preferences (applications:utilties:diskutility. Select your startup drive and repair permissions. If neither of these works, post back and we'll start some additional troubleshooting.

  • FCP v4.5 Won't open under certain user

Yesterday, one of our G5 machines quit loading FCP, but only under a specific user. Others users can still run FCP, no problem.
I have deleted the FCP preference files from his home folder to no avail.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

how did you trash prefs ... did you get all of them?
you need to trash 4 files:
    com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
then inside another subfolder called "Final Cut Pro
    User Data"
    Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prof Cache
there is also a apple knowledgebase article about
    this process (for FCP4.5)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93832
    ... or use FCP Rescue
but maybe you did that already, in which case you
could try trashing the whole Preferences folder in
that users Library folder ... of course that means
the user will have to reset prefs for their account
    and all their applications
    good luck
    Andy
I just deleted both FCP directories within the users home dir, then I deleted the com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist file as well (yes, I backed them up first).
I'm assuming in my case these should be:
    Final Cut Pro 4.5 Prefs
Final Cut Pro 4.5 Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro 4.5 Prof Cache
    I'll check it.

  • Recovered FCP projects won't open.

I've recently used Stellar Phoenix to recover data from my hard drive, which was successful, but now the FCP project files won't open, even if i force FCP to read it. It just gives me "Error: Wrong file type".
The files that wont work are Final Cut Pro files. Files that do work are Pro Tools
Other files that were recovered work ok (.mov quicktime files).
I've seen threads on other forums of people who have had the same problem, it wasnt resolved. Has anyone here had/heard of this problem?
    Thanks

Ok, so we have the final cut pro project file open now. The file type changer did work in the end..but now we have a different problem.
All the media files that FCP wants to link to are there, but it will only find about 30% of them. The rest are "Media Offline". I've tried going through "reconnect media" and finding the files manually, but FCP just won't load them. It doesn't even give me an error message, it just doesn't do anything when i select the files and click ok. I also have to change it to see All Files rather than just audio or video. But..When I find the files in finder, I can append the video files with .mov, and they run fine in quicktime, and i can do the same with the audio files... Also, the file Type and Creator tags are the same on videos that FCP can read and the ones it can't read.Any thoughts? I have tried everything i can think of.
    Thanks again!

  • Changed library name - FCPX won't open?

    Ouch.
I inadvertently changed the Library name of an FCP X file in the Finder Window ... and now FCP X won't open.  I immediately changed it back to the original name, and FCP X still won't open.  The FCP X logo comes up, and then the app seems to freeze and not open.
    Sound familiar?
There must be a work around or a fix, right?
    All ears,
    Ben

    HI Al,
Interesting.  And that's why I did the change IN the Finder Window.  I couldn't click the Library open IN the app.  It was as if frozen.  I tried a dozen times to click, or to hit enter when highlighted.  So I thought it wasn't something that could be done.
In fact, now that you've encouraged me that such a thing is possible I'm going to try again.
In the meanwhile I had a few crashes, re-installed FCPX, muddled around a bit.  It seems to be working now.  Could have had something to do with FCPX 10.1.1 working with an earlier project done in FXPX 10.0 ... and when I opened FCPX (I think I opened it to set up another project) there was no automatic request to update the original project.  Maybe something weird happened there and caused some kind of corruption.  But in the end I did get the original project updated ... and am now learning how to organize in this little beastie.
I did learn something interesting about relinking media though.  You can't JUST relink clips to their original media files in FCPX 10.1 ... because when you go to locate your original movie ... it's imbedded in the Library (all those hidden folders), and there is no way to access the library that way.  Someone over at Creative Cow created a workaround, quite brilliant I think.  It works anyhow.  In the Finder Window you 'open package contents', work your way to the folder that contains the unlinked media files, then drag that folder to the margin on the left of Finder Window (where you can drag folders you work on regularly).  THEN you can do a relink and work your way to the folder you need that way.  Works fine.
I'm going to try renaming my Library now.  Wish me luck.  So useful to be able to do this.
    Thank you kindly Al,
    Ben

  • FCP 5.1 file won't open in FCP 7

    Hi.
I am at my wits end...I have a FCP 5.1 file that I have been working on for years.
I had to upgrade to FCP 7 for reasons I won't go into and now my FCP 5.1 file won't open.
It is a file with footage from P2 cards. It has magic bullet/looks builder used throughout. I am not sure if that is the issue at one point ONE of the messages I got when it crashed (I got a few different ones at different times) was something about looksbuilder not working right.
In a nutshell, it slowly starts to open and then quits. (It gets to about 33 percent open over the course of 45 minutes and then crashes.)
The file is about half a gig and there is plenty of room on the MAC itself so it shouldn't be that the Mac is overtaxed.
I don't know what to do.
I tried opening various back-up copies, etc. because I thought maybe something was just corrupted. NONE of them open.
I tried deleting render files to limit how much it was trying to process when it opened the thing.
I even tried turning off the external drives that hold the media hoping that if it couldn't find the media it would just open the shell of a file for me and maybe I could reconnect it all later. Obviously, grasping at straws...
I am out of options. Do I just need to wipe my computer and reinstall 5.1 from scratch? That would stink because there is another project being worked on on the computer that is a FCP 7 file.
I tried putting a copy of FCP 5.1 back on the computer (so I have 7 and 5.1 on there now) to get it to open, but FCP 5.1 won't work either now (I get General Error 41 - whatever that means) Maybe you can't have two versions of FCP on the computer? Maybe it thinks it got opened in 7 so now it won't work in 5? even though it never fully opened? Guessing...
I'd appreciate any and all help. All I want to do is open the 5.1 file and save it in FCP 7 and work from there.
    Thanks!
    Shari

    Hey Michael:
Thanks for the response. I did something similar in that I opened the file on another computer that had FCP 7 and it was fine. So I saved that. Then I went to my Mac and tried to open that file and it crashed...but it said something about Looksbuilder...so I contacted them and they had me uninstall, reinstall and then fix the preference files for Looksbuilder and it now opens.
    YAY!
    Thanks again,
    Shari

  • FCP Project File created in 5.1.4 won't open in 5.1

    Hi All,
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Things could have been worse, but thankfully I saved a copy of a major project to another drive. I successfully reinstalled all my original software including FCP 5.1. The problem is that I was running 5.1.4 for this project and now the file won't open. (General Error 41)
Is it still possible to find a software update for Version 5.1.4?
I have searched the forum and I suspect that the answer is no. It seems that version 6 is the only version available now.
My back-up plan is to find someone in my area who has the 5.1.4 version to open my project file, then export as an xml file. Then I plan to import the xml into my system with the version of 5.1 and I'm back to work.
It's a big project for us and I could really use some reassurance. Thanks everyone.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    click on this link
    http://www.apple.com/search/downloads/?q=finalcut+pro5.1.4
then click on the Final Cut Studio Downloads, enter your Apple ID and then enter your Final Cut Pro license. Scroll down a bit and click on the Final Cut Pro legacy downloads. It should be in there.

  • FCP won't open one of its own files.

    Hi, everyone.
I have an fcp project that I need to update and modify. I tried opening it, and I got "File Error: Wrong Type". I read this previous post...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8398246&#8398246
...and followed its suggestions. I quit fcp, and tried to open the file again (without the application already being opened). No luck.
Also as suggested, I saved the project file as a txt document, then change it back to an fcp document and open that. No luck again. I get "Unable to open project file".
These remedies worked for the original poster in the discussion, but they haven't worked for me. Anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, this project was created in 2006 on this computer that I'm still using, and with this version of FCP that I'm using -- so I can't fathom why it won't open.
    Thanks!

do you want to send me the file and I'll see if I can open it. My email is in my profile. Please "compress" the file before attaching to email

  • FCP 6 won't open

I just reinstalled FCP Studio 2 and FCP 6, compressor, Motion or Soundtrack Pro will open. DVD Studio Pro, Live Type and Cinema Tools will. Yes I trashed the preferences and added the updates?

Try a google for repairing pre-bindings. It is a terminal command.
If, as you say, it won't open AT ALL -- no app starting what so ever... it could be a permissions or prebinding issue.
But now, as I type -- I'm wondering if maybe (MAYBE???) FCP is opening in another desktop scene... hit F13 and see if it isn't opening somewhere else. But your profile says you are still on Tiger - so that's not it...
Fixing pre-bindings will tie together all the system requirememnts. Sometimes (though not often) they get wonky.

  • FCP HD won't open!

I can't open my FCP HD for some reason. I've tried reinstalling the program and it still won't open. When I click on the icon in the dock or in the finder it acts as if it's trying to open but then it shuts off. Has this ever happen to anyone. And how'd you resolve it?????
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • FCP 7.0.3 won't open project files with OSX Lion.

After upgrade to Lion, FCP 7.0.3 won't open existing project files (built with 10.6.8)  Error message is "wrong file type". Help?

If deleting your preferences doesn't work, here are some more troubleshooting tips
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2591
If you like, you could send me a project file that won't open.  I'll check it on my system and we can eliminate the possibility that the project files have been corrupted.  Me email is in my profile.  Be sure and compress project file before attaching to email (control click on file and choose "compress."  this will create a zipped version of the file that's suitable for attachment.).

  • FCP won't open - no error message

When I try to open FCP from the Dock the little light below the icon lights up for about a second and then nothing happens. When I try to open it from the Applications folder the icon will do it's "zoom" animation but still nothing happens. If I do cmdoptesc it doesn't show up but do cmd+i on the icon it says it was just opened.
I read I should delete my preferences, but I can't find any relating to FCP:
I downloaded Preference Manager and used it to delete FCP preferences but it still won't open.
Here are the basics of my computer:
    osx 10.5.5
    FCP 6.0.5
    Caldigit HDPro 1.6
I realize I have old versions of everything but up until now it all worked.

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on the system drive.
Restart, try FCP again, post your results.
