FCP 5 and digital HDD video import

Ok this might have a simple answer. I hope so. I have searched the forums and have not found an answer yet.
I currently have FCP 5. I am considering (finally) purchasing a video camera that has a HDD, but I am not sure how the import would work. I noticed that FCP 6 and FCE 4 both have "log and transfer" screen, but my FCP 5 does not. How is anyone out there transferring video from video cameras with HDDs? Are they. Is FCP 5 compatible with these newer video cameras.
thanks for any reply.
Kyle P

Is FCP 5 compatible with these newer video cameras.
Depends on the codec the camera uses to record. I often use a Firestore HDD recorder attached to my camera ... and edit with FCP 4.5. Since v4.5 doesn't have a log and transfer option, I just import the files directly into my FCP project (after copying them to the Capture/Scratch drive).
But many of the newer cameras use recording codec that are only compatible with FCP 6 and up. Check the camera before you purchase to make sure it's compatible with your version of the software or plan on upgrading.

  • Digital camera video importing as photos :(

I lost my daughter 's  hula  recital   I filmed on a panasonic digital camera.  I lost the cable to import the photos and avi video, so I transfered the SD card to a canon powershot to import into iphoto.  Doing this caused the video to be imported as a jpg.  Why?  I've shot video with the canon.  Now instead of footage, I have stills.  Is there anyway to see if the video information is retrievable?  I deleted all off the SD card not knowing this bogus transfer happened.

Info shows that all photos are jpeg.  I double click and see a photo with out the opportunity to play/pause.
I did a test here are home:
    1.  Recorded 10 minutes of video in the panasonic digital camera
1a.  Viewed the video in the camera and it is indeed video
    2.  Moved the card to the Canon camera (because I have the cable to import with that camera; lost cable for panasonic)
    Imported "video" into iphoto
    3.  Viewed in iphoto
    4.  Image is a jpeg still not avi video
Good advice not to delete the images on the card from iphoto, but I had success for years.
    Thx.

  • Video stutter and artifacting -TM700k video imported using rewrap2m2v

    Guys,
I imported a video shot in TM700 to my iMac late 2006 model running snow leopard, using the Automator tool of Alan Somersault -rewrap. While playing the resultant movie .m4v file I am getting a lot of video stutter and artifacting and the movie also quit couple of times while playing.
    Any suggestions on resolving this?
    Thanks

The movist application actually drops frames during playback to avoid the stutter you've described.
This of course is good for preview. The only other way (within consumer segment) is to get a computer which support hardware accelerated playback, i.e. a later Mac models. However, as hardware acceleration is early, stutter still occurs for some applications but that will improve over time.
If you want to go the free route, use Rewrap2M4V to rewrap the video files to a more friendly format and then use MPEG Streamclip to actually convert the video to a less compressed format.
If you want an "all-in-one" solution, try VoltaicHD for ClipWrap.

  • No video imported

All of a sudden when I try to import video from my camera to iMovie it won't work.  The first thing that happens in the automatic mode is that it shuts off and says stopped.  Then I switch to manual and the whole video imports but the screen is blue the whole time.  When it is finished it says there is no video.  If I open up the screen on the camcorder when I am importing the video, I can see video. iMovie has worked for me in the past and I don't know what happened.  I am using iMovie 9.0.8

    > how can I get that info?
Right-click on the file in the Premiere Pro porject window and choose "Properties".
You can also right-click on a file in Windows Explorer, choose "Properties", go to the "Summary" tab and click "Advanced>>". This should show some basic information about the file.
    > Or is there anyway for me to change the file type? maybe to an mpg?
Not without knowing what is first. In any case, Premiere does not handle MPEG files all that well so it's likely not the best choice.

  • FCP6 and QT 7.6.4 crash on video import

Time after time, FCP and QT have crashed after importing videos. If the videos have been exported previously, then they work fine in FCP 6 and QT 7.6.4
The are .AVI and .MOV files.
One file was a .MOV file that was converted from .MTS on another mac.
    Any ideas?

I can't even get that far. When the video opens and I try to click anything, it immediately crashes and says, " The application QT Player quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the app again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple. "Close" "Report..." "Reopen." '

  • Fcp x 10.0.9 I can't select in and out points while importing media, and scrubber won't work in event browser.

I have two problems, and I have already un installed and reinstalled FCP X, and still have the issues.
    1) In the import media window I can no longer select my in and out points to import. Pressing  the "I" and "O" keys, I just get the audible error beep.
    2) in the event browser I can select the in and out points, but it will no longer scrub through the clip with the cursor.
I do have OSX Mavericks installed, but the issue was prior to the install.

Tom, perhaps I used the wrong terminology, skimming not scrubbing. In the event browser on the thumbnails of my clips, I recall being able to skim to a point and then select the in and out points. It apparently is solved. I guess the reinstall fixed it. Well like taking your car to a mechanic its not making the clicking sound now.
As far as the import. I think  by your response you solved the problem. I can select the in and out point when I import from a camera or my iphone, but I did not realize you could not select the in and out points from a video file already on my hard drive.
I appreciate your responce, and have a great day.

  • Importing QT movie and getting PCP video-av1 file not found

I am trying to import a QT movie into FCP 7 and I keep getting a message that says, PCP video-av1 file not found.

I suspect you're trying to import a reference quicktime where the media that the file is referencing is missing.

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks

  • I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD.

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD. Also, I can not afford an expensive camera and need some advice on which of the available cameras would be best and also work well with a Mac. One last issue, I currently use a Panasonic #CCD camera that takes a tape. When I load video to Final Cut the audio and video are out of sinc. Go figure. Can anyone help with these questions. Karen

    Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders.  Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs.  Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

  • Importing, converting and editing home video mostly

Guys - I am new to Apple. Please be patient !!
I basically need help . I shoot mostly family videos with my Sony cam (.mts format). I need basic conversion, editing and subtitling etc, but since my cam is HD, I would like to keep the quality. I have been disappointed by the poor quality of my .WMV files using "Flip".
I don't mind spending a bit of cash on this. In Windows, "Nero" comes in at around U$60, and is very flexible in file conversion, editing and DVD burning. Looking for similar.
    Many thanks
Paul (PS - just downloaded Yosemite)

Possibly iMovie is all you need – except for the DVD part. You may have it already installed, depending on your Mac model; or you can get it for $15 from the App Store. You could then find a copy of the discontinued iDVD (part of the iLife suite, which is typically available at online retailers for roughly $40). Or purchase Roxio Toast ($100) to fulfill your DVD authoring needs.
Alternatively download the trial version of FCP X and see whether you like it. More expensive @$300, but it is a more powerful program.
    Good luck.

  • Two problems with video: Import and gamma

I downloaded and tried LR4 today and found the new adjustment features quite impressive. I was also very eager to try the new video facilities. Woudl have loved to...
Running on iMAC with Lion, pictures and video from a Pentax K5. Video is full HD @25fps. Never had any problems in LR3.6 with importing or cataloging my videos.
When I tried to import already downloaded photos and videos two things happend:
First, some of the videos are not in their "correct" position in grid view, while others are correct. In finder date and filename are correct.
Second and more complicated, videos are completely off in colors and play with interruptions. I attached of few screen shots of what it looks like in LR3.6 and LR4.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Joachim
p.s. just tried direct import from camera, with the same effect, at least regarding colors and slow video replay.

    Thanks,
did not get a PM yet. After trying with several other sources I finally found the "mistake" after installing and trying LR4 on my MBP. The reason for the color shift is that I switched on the development preset Auto tone, which for video gives this crazy results. Other presets work just fine, even giving a warning that some of the adjustments might not apply in video. Auto Tone and the video is off.
    Hope this helps.
    Best,

This may depend on your chosen encoding options for the Mails (MIME vs. Base64 or similar) and/or the mails being reduced in size and sliced up server side. Apple (and Google) do stuff like recompressing images when viewing mails on mobile devices from an Apple ID or Gmail account... You have to turn it off in their web frontends....

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 and H.264/AVC video import issues

    Hello!
I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and using Premiere Pro CS5.5.
I record HD videos using a Canon EOS 7D in .mov format. I don't have any issues importing these files to Premiere, but I do have problems with the convered equivalents. I'm currently using AVS Video Converter 7 to convert the original files to .AVI files.
The main difference between the two versions (original and converted) is the bitrate and audio codec, but Premiere only imports audio when I drag the .avi file to it. What strikes me dumb is that a poor editor like Camtasia Studio has no problems reading the files (both the audio and video track), but Premiere does.
I also have the MainConcept Codec Suite, but that doesn't help.
Can someone please give me a better solution than telling me to convert the converted videos back to a format supported by Premiere? I would prefere jugling with codecs and make it work rather than spending time converting videos back and forth.
Intel Core i7 920, 12GB RAM, nVidia GeForce GTX 295.
    Thank you!

    @Jim Simon
I have 7D footage on my hard dive right now.  4.5 minutes takes up
about 660MB.  Which is right in line with AVCHD running at 12 to 13 GB
    per hour.
I don't know what kind of footage you got, but I download recordings from it daily and I think that entitles me to say I know better. Maybe what you've got isn't original 7D HD footage.
As for the solution...what I'm saying is that the "best
practice" IS the solution.  You're creating a problem by not following
the best practice.  If you follow that best practice, you will stop
    creating the problem.
I already have problems. To be more specific, I'm not looking for future advice, but for ways of solving the problems I currently have. Telling me what to do from now on won't help me import and use in Premiere the already compressed files.
    @banzemanga
Well, nothing will be resolved by complaining about it.
What you should be doing is to request this feature.
I'm not complaining as much as I'm saying Premiere is really PRO.
However, i am curious why MainConcept Codec Suite can't import your file.
Have you tried using a different video container differnt than *.avi?
Yes, I have tried a dozen, but to no avail.
    @shooternz
Most people using Premiere want to maintain high quality...not throw it away by using converters.
I'm using native files too, it's just that I don't keep them that way for years.
Editing native is seen by most to be a huge PLUS!
    Yes, I would say CPU-wise.
Later in the evening I have found what seems to be the best solution to my issue.
AVS Video ReMaker and MainConcept can do wonders together when it comes to importing compressed files to Premiere PRO. AVS Video ReMaker's MP4 export almost instantly converts files with no quality loss and very close to the source file's size, and these MP4 files are recognized as native clips in Premiere (with stereo audio track and clean responsive video) thanks to MainConcept. It is excellent! The only downside is that the CPU gets more stressed (about 20-30% more of a Core i7 920), but the compressed video runs smooth (HD@50fps), needs no rendering and takes the same ammount of space as the source compressed file.
