FCP 5 & Motion2 question

Hi All, hope this question isn't a silly one.
When I go to the send to (motion) option in FCP the media goes off-line, once I am in Motion I get asked the question to reconnect, however the name of the file it asks for is not the exact same one I am working on, for example if I am working on Jack & Jills video it will ask me to reconnect to Jack. sorry for sounding silly but it is the best way for me to explain it. Any help would be great.

Hi Patrick
I will try dropping any non alphanumeric characters today, I feel confident that this could be the answer to my problem.
Thanks Alot, and I will get back to you with the result.

  • Avid to FCP User Questions...

    Hi,
I recently made the switch from Avid to FCP - loving it so far, by the way. I have a few transition questions if someone can help me. These are things I've done fluently on the Avid and can't seem to find it in the manual.
    1. How do you mix audio levels and pans in the timeline for multiple clips? On MC, I set in and out point for the range of clips and move the level for it up and they all go up. Can't seem to do this in FCP.
    2. If I'm working in a 48K/16bit sequence and import audio to the bin, (or video too) is the only way to change the sample rate by exporting it with the sequence setting and then re-importing it? This seems like a lot of extra work if you have many clips. In Avid, it changes it simply in the menu.
    3. If I wanted to delete effects and transitions on multiple clips in the timeline, how do I do this? In the Avid, I would select the range of clips and then simply hit delete.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

    1. Highlight all the audio you want to effect...then type CONTROL-] to raise +3db...Control-[ to lower 3db. And Control + and - to raise 1db at a time.
    2. NOt sure what you mean here. Are you asking how do youconvert the audio to 48k 16-bit stereo for use in the sequence? Convert it BEFORE you get to your sequence. iTunes does this for music, as does Compressor, which also does this for ANY audio.
    3. Delete only the transitions and not the clips? Avid might have FCP there.

  • Totally bizarre XDCAM HD + FCP import question

I have filmed 40+ discs on XDCAM HD 50GB discs at 50MBs. These were then logged and captured using Sony's XDCAM pluggin for Final Cut Pro 6.5.
When the project file was taken on the drive with all the media etc and plugged into a macPro pro (2 x 2.26Ghz quad core 8GB ram) the project file could not see 1052 of the media files and asked to reconnect them. Something I didn't want to have to do for each file!
I then shot another job using XDCAM HD but this time at 35mbs per
second and on 23GB disks. Again it was logged on site using the laptop and again the desktop failed to recognise the
media for 626 out of 2685 shots.
I have updated the desktop to FCP 7.0.1. and it still doesn't see
them. I tried my friend’s desktop and it can't see these files either.
The files that can't be seen are in the lower part of the browser
which is in alphabetical rather than disc order (i.e. imported at totally random times). However there is
also a bin full of shots from just one disc at the bottom of the
browser and none of those files can be seen either.
When the projects are returned to the laptop that logged and captured them – it can see everything.
    Not sure what to do
Does FCP have a limit on the number of files associated with a project? Or a reason why it would fail to see such a large number of files?
I am truly in the dark on this.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Jasper

I haven’t responded in a while but I haven’t been lazy on this as I’ve been trying out a range of options.
Firstly I have tried the projects on another high spec Desktop and it refused to link the last third (roughly) of media as before.
Reconnecting the media files also doesn’t work.
You can find them using ‘Locate’ or ‘search’ but then once you click on the file it doesn’t appear in the ‘Files Located’ box below as it should it just disappears from the list of files to be found.
    Is it a memory problem?
Clearly it is a large project and sometimes FCP can’t play the files it is showing in the browser because it is out of memory.
But I have a DVCPRO HD project that is 3 times as big at 1.5 TB which opens and plays perfectly well.
It also fails to see the files even if they have been put away in lots of separate bins.
Which brings us back to the original bizarre point of the question.
Why does it open and play OK on a laptop with less memory and less processing speed?
And why is it not connecting the final third of the media?
And why does this group of 1051 to 1061 unconnected/offline files change according to how they are arranged in the browser i.e. final third alphabetically or final third in reel order etc etc.
Please can anyone suggest any other avenues for me to try … it is driving me crazy.
    Cheers

  • FCP Exam Questions

Hi all. Next Monday I will start the FCP training course for Level 1. I was just woundering has anyone got examples of the type of questions that are asked in the exam. What should I look out for and concentrate on. Any advise would be great.
    Regards
    Owen

Get a book called Final Cut Pro 5, by Diana Weynand. It is part of the Apple Pro training series and at the end of each chapter are a handful of questions, all of which are taken from the exam you'll be sitting.
It's almost entirely multiple choice and includes questions that ask you to identlfy areas of the interface aswell as what tools do what etc.
You might get it as part of your course, but it's one option if you want to read ahead.

  • Capturing Hi8 A/V through Digital8 Camcorder - FCP preset question

After putting this off for years (so long that I forgot what to do) I am finally getting around to loading the old family library of Hi8 video footage shot in the 80's and 90's with a Canon A1 through a Sony DCR-TRV320 to do the analog to video conversion enroute to the Mac through FCP 6. After trial and error I have fumbled my way through the appropriate camcorder settings (Analog Video Out conversion to Digital Video Out, Audio bit rate changed from 12 bit to 16 bit) to eliminate the audio sampling rate mismatch error I was getting in FCP after Capture Now imports.
My latest test loaded OK with no errors. I am still left wondering if I should change the audio frequency preset in FCP. I can't find authoritative info on what audio frequency the original Hi8 material was recorded in. Changing the bit rate from 12 to 16 on the Sony camcorder fixed the FCP mismatch error I was getting, but I wonder if I am screwing with the sound by leaving the FCP preset at 48 kHz. If the Hi8 material was recorded at a lower frequency, will the audio be OK if FCP is importing it at 48 kHz? It sounds OK but I haven't done a headphone test. Just wondering if I have to create a special preset at a lower frequency or just leave it alone, now that I solved the bit rate problem.
    Thanks!

Thank you all for the expert advice. I just found the manual for the Sony camcorder used for the analog to digital conversion and it lists two modes for its PCM system 1) 12 bits/32 kHz, 2) 16 bits/48 kHz. If I understand you correctly, it doesn't matter how the audio was laid down by the Canon A1 analog, since the Sony is converting it to 16/48 (or 12/32 which was my problem earlier, before toggling the Sony menu setting). Is that right?

  • P2 HVX FCP Import question

Hi I am shooting 720pn on an HVX and can't get them to come in at 1280x720 on FCP. I went to Easy Setups and chose DVC PRO HD with 1280x720 as the size but then when they come in they are 960x720. Then when I look at the size of the quicktimes they are far smaller than they are on the P2. That's how I first caught the problem. What's strange is that on another computer I have p2 log and that keeps them the same file size and same resolution. Not sure what I'm doing wrong in FCP. It's the academic version 5.1.4. Really appreciate any help. I'm in Tanzania on a shoot right now trying to figure this out.
    http://ryanhill.net

Thanks for your help guys. What's strange is that the P2 Log Quicktimes remain the same file size, while the Quicktimes FCP generates are much smaller. So a 16GB card is 16GB worth of Quicktimes when converted in P2 Log is 16GB whereas in FCP the size of the quicktimes is greatly reduced.

  • FCP 7 question not able to fade in on an edit

I am trying to put a fade in fade out transition from a slug to a text in FCP 7 I am unable to do it. Can't figure it out this is about as simple as it gets but I am unable to put a fade in fade out between the slug and the inpoint of my text (opening title of my video) Thanks.

You need to read up on the concept of Handles
Without them, you can't use a transition. Simple editors like iMovie don't use handles -- they pull the clips together to create the overlap needed. Final Cut Pro needs handles because the iMovie method will change the timing. Timing is critical in professional video production.

  • FCP Audio Question

From the Audio Mixer Tool Bench window I have been monitoring the audio levels of my project to make sure that none of the sound clips above zero. But there is one clip in the movie that peaks at -8. it is a music video that my friend made and compressed that I pulled into the sequence of my film. It is obvious that both audio inputs in a stereo pair want to raise past -8. But they both stop at that level. It is strange because all of the other surrounding clips are free to rise and fall to their natural levels in the meter.
Does anybody know why this happens?
    Thanks.

What do you mean by "...It is obvious that both audio inputs in a stereo pair want to raise past -8..."
Does the song SOUND clipped? distorted? If so then follow the advice youve been given - hopefully it was user error on the transfer and not clipped at the source.
But If the clip in question is a song from a music video then it has probably been mastered and the dynamics squashed out - as is the current trend in music mastering.
In that case what you are seeing is not necessarily a clipped waveform but rather a very heavily limited waveform. Many modern recordings actually resemble one big long square-wave when you view the entire song.
So if it is a song which was mastered for production (especially rock) then you'll never see "natural" dynamics on your meters.
    use your ears.

  • FCP font question

I'm using a Chalet font for a project and there are 10 versions of this font.
FCP seems to pick the one I don't need.
Here's the deal...I have to use Suitcase which final cut does an ok job of seeing most of them. I have the font that I need activated in Suitcase and the others deactivated, but in Final Cut text the pulldown of fonts just displays Chalet when I need Chalet-NewYorkSeventy.otf
Is it hung up on the hyphen?
    4x2.5 G5 3.5GB .5 TB storage Geforce 6600 dual 20" CD's   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FCSuite HD 5.0.4 Sony FX-1 & M10U

I'd say your first course of action would be to deactivate suitcase and install the font with font book to be sure the whole family is live to your system.
Failing that I have had FCP treat some fonts as duds which leads to fonts either not being available or not being able to change the font fron the default Lucida grande.
If the fonts are postscripts and quite old this can cause problems might be worth looking on versiontracker for a conversion utility and convert them to either truetype or .dfont
    Hope that helps.

  • FCP upgrade question

When purchasing an upgrade for FCP, does the previous version of the software need to be installed on the computer, or is just the serial number enough? I just got a new G5, and my old FCP isn't compatible with Tiger, so it won't be on the new system when I set it up and upgrade...

I believe the installer requests both the previous version serial number, and the new one for qualifying upgrades

  • FCP:  compression question and output

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, I'm sure someone will tell me otherwise. I'm using compression preset, mpeg-2 high/and fast and for a 30 minute video, it takes 5 hours to compress. Has anyone had this experience, if so, have you found a manual setting you're happy with? Many thanks
    kchen

Are you going to Compressor from within the FCP app? If so, that was a problem for me and I am not sure it ever got resolved since I have used the work-around ever since. The problem was that if I went to Compressor from within FC, FC wouldn't release the processors so Compressor could only use like 20% of the resources. If I export a reference file and drag that file into Compressor, viola', everything churns away much faster.

  • Canon fcp plugin question

    Hi everyone,
I recently installed the canon plug-in to allow me to directly ingest the footage I shoot with my 7d. However it won't work so far. Basically I have a lot of footage backed up on a hard drive from a weekend shoot, and the footage hasn't been modified in any way, other than it was pulled off the CF cards and dropped onto hard drives.
so it looks like that process made it so that the plug in won't recognize those folders of movies as compatible for the log and transfer. I read further on the site and it seems like their instructions require you to be transferring directly from the cards. that process doesnt really work for me since most of my shoots require me to clear the cards during the day, and the laptop i have used this for doesn't have fcp so i couldn't really do that anyways.
is there a work around here? or if i pull everything off cards to hd's do i just have to do the compressor transcoding to get these to work? if anyone has any experience with this process let me know. thanks
    austin

so judging by what i've read, log and transfer can't read the files properly once you've removed them from the cards, and you have a new file where the movs and the thm's are separated. this makes sense to me, you can't pull ex-1 stuff off and have it work either, i'm following. i've read a little about making a disk image of the folder and that it makes it work properly. can anyone explain this to me? i've tried to navigate the disk utility and cant figure it out. any links maybe?

  • A versioning/FCP roundtripping question

Hi all. I cut a trailer in FCP and roundtripped to Motion to add graphics, mostly text-based effects, maps, etc. Now I need to do various no-effects/limited-effects versions of the trailer. What's the quickest way to accomplish this, in other words, to maintain the version I have while "turning off" various effects on certain shots?

What Mark said. When I'm planning ahead, I duplicate the clip on my FCP timeline before sending it to Motion. Then I disable one of the copies in FCP (ctrl-B), and send the other one to Motion. When I need to do the clean version of the sequence, I disable the Motion clip and re-enable the original. This has taken me much longer to explain than it does to do...

  • SHAKE and FCP keyboard question

Hi Forum, I went to creative cow, but thought I'd ask here too.
I've just got SHAKE (and a box-load of tutorials) and I see I'm supposed to use a 3 button mouse. I was thinking of getting the bella keyboard with jog/shuttle FCP shortcuts. Can that Jog/shuttle be used like the mouse? Or is the "mighty mouse" or any other recommendation better? I know a lot of you use SHAKE and your opinions matter before I drop the 180 bucks on the keyboard!
    thanks
    Mark

    Hey there,
While I'm sure the bella is pretty sweet, a mighty mouse will do the job. I have a logitech thumb ball and it works fine. Occasionally I'll use a wacom for roto.
Hope it saves a couple o' bills ^^
