FCP 5   Timeline "Text"

Working on a project in FCP 5 that has several different text tracks.  Aside from a small icon, the tracks are all named "Text".  Is there some way I can have them automatically named by,  like the actual text?  Every time I have to change one of them I have to go through all 30 to find it.

Automatically? Nope, not that I know of.
You can manually change the clip name that appears in the timeline (and that name is searchable) by control clicking on the text clip, and choosing Item Properties > Format and changing the name there.
If you had, say, thousands of text clips, you might consider outputting an xml of the timeline and using the xml to make the changes, but this is cumbersome in its own way and for <75 or so text clips I'm not sure it is worth the effort.
Maybe someone else will be able to tell you a better way to do it.

  • Do I need to pre-convert 1080i files to 1080p in Compressor before editing in a FCP X Timeline?

I'm working on a project that's shot in 1080p, 23.97fps. A friend gave me some footage to add that was shot in 1080i, 29.97fps, on a Canon Vixia. FCP X will accept both, of course, as an event, and will even accept both in the same timeline, but what will happen if I try to edit or export them? Should I convert the 1080i to 1080p, 24fps. Final output only needs to be in 24fps.  Thanks for any help!!! I can't seem to find a straight answer on this.

Difficult question to answer - if you convert it first, you'll be recompressing it - so you'll lose quality that way. I guess the best idea would be to de-interlace and save uncompressed.
I'd be inclined to let FCP X take care of it but why not try a small section using both methods? If you can't see any difference in the result, I wouldn't worry.

  • Color 1.0.4 FCP= Corrupt timeline??

Ever since the Color 1.0.4 / 2008-005 update, I'm finding that every time I export my sequence back to Final Cut Pro from Color, The video clips are completely distorted beyond all recognition in the newly created color timeline. All that you can see is a blur or color stripes that once made up the video image. This was happening to every single clip on the timeline.
The wireframe borders seem to go on forever in the north & south direction. I attempted to try to grab the frames to resize them back to normal. But after a few minutes of dragging on my first clip, I never made it to the top of the image....
The workaround I figured out is that I have to reveal all the color-rendered files from finder, import into my FCP file browser, and then from there drag them into the timeline again. They now will appear fine. I tried this when looking at the source clips in QuickTIme displayed properly. So i think the problem lies within the XML tradeoff??
Needless to say this really stinks. I tried to download the previous Pro Apps update to revert back to 2008-004. But that direct link off apple's downloads page for FCP shoots you right to the newest update with no archive to be found. The "old" 004 update is nowhere else on the www either.
It would be nice if we could get to archive versions of these updates. Since I haven't seen any other posts on the subject, it leads me to doubt that the update is the cause. But its the last thing I did before working on this project. So It would be great to be able to test it out.
It was time to clock out before I could do any more hunting around.
Just thought I'd throw this out there to see if I'm not the only one. And maybe there's a fix i just couldn't find in the forums.... I did look. Thanks!

This is about the smartest thing that has been said here in a while. It's all too common for an user to blame the hardware, blame the software, blame the manufacturer.
I just had a project in DVD SP go belly up the other day. I simply can't figure it out either as the media is still fine. The closest thing I can figure out is it had a problem with an asset file name and what's weirder is that that file name had been totally cool with DVD SP for over 2 weeks. No updates were done on my computer, zilcho, no nothing. But what was also strange is that in those two weeks of no updates or installations, Font Book had found a duplicate font.
Here's another tool for your troubleshooting tool kit, boys and girls; duplicate fonts can bring your machine to a grinding halt. Font Book does a great job of finding this naughty items and punishing them. Open up Font Book, peruse the user guide with a cuppa joe.
At any rate, I'm amazed all the computer mojo works as well as it does. I had a timeline navigation bug in Color 1.0.2 that I couldn't fix for anything. Nothing was said about it on any other board although Mr. Owens could duplicate the same problems. Color 1.0.3 fixed those right up for me and it's been the most stable version of Color that I've experienced.
Sometimes a project goes corrupt for who knows why.

  • Working with WMV files in FCP 5 Timeline

I know Flip4Mac Studio Edition allows for importing and exporting into and out of FCP 5 in WMV format. What I'm not sure of, is can you do intensive editing on the WMV files in FCP 5 without any glitches. Will FCP run smoothly?
I am asking because I work at online company that will be receiving wmv files on its servers. This is a high volume workflow with an intense turnover rate. We are receiving hour long clips and re-editing them down to 2 minutes. There is no time to go through lengthy WMV to MOV conversions. We need to receive, edit, and output all in WMV.
Can FLip4Mac with FCP 5 edit an intense environment like this? Where everything is done in WMV? Or Is Flip4Mac primarily for converting WMV into MOV so that editing in FCP is done with MOV files, and then at the end exporting as WMV again.
Is FLip4Mac the only solution. Are there others? After recommending and praising Macs, I may be on thin ice if FLip4Mac isn't a sufficient workaround!!
    Thanks Curtis

Saving a WMV as MOV in QuicktimePro is simply putting a MOV wrapper on the WMV so FCP will better handle it. It's a Save As not an export so there's no additional compression.
Ultimately you will have to render though, most likely because it's not one of the video formats natively handled by FCP (DV, DVCPro50, etc). It's not just the physical settings, the "video" codec itself must be supported. BTW if you were to edit in HDV you'd have to render too for output (to create new GOP structure in that case though).
    Hi Craig,
Thanks for the advice, a few things though....
"Flip4Mac Player Pro allows you to edit WMV in FCP."
The problem is that I need to render when I import
WMV files into FCP, even though I have matched all of
the parameters in the sequence settings (ie. pixel
aspect ratio, frame rate, frame size, etc.)
I don't know for sure, but my understanding is I have
to render because there is no WM9 option under the
"compressor" parameter in the Sequence Settings.
Because of this it is impossible to import WMV files
without rendering even with FLip4Mac, because I have
it installed and can still export as a WMV file.
Have you discovered a way to import WMV files into
FCP without needing rendering? This is critical for
me because the environment I'm in doesn't allow for
long render times, as it will slow down the workflow
    of the whole newsroom.
"I can also open WMV in QuicktimePro (with Flip4Mac)
and save the file as MOV. I find it works smoother
    that way."
But doesn't it degrade the quality when you convert
to .MOV? And for me, going from WMV to MOV back to
WMV will result in degradations at each step won't
    it?

  • Mixing NTSC and PAL on FCP X timeline.

I have a timeline which has both NTSC and PAL clips. The first clip was NTSC. What settings should I use to Share the timeline into .mov? Eventually I want to burn the .mov file onto a DVD.

Export as a Master File and use the MF in in the DVD app.
The Project should be NTSC and I think you will get away with it.

  • Does anyone know of a way to export a .gfx file from the FCP 7 timeline? If not, do you know of a plug-in or even a stand alone video converter that will accomplish this? I can convert FROM gfx, but cannot convert TO gfx. Thanks.

Having a problem with files that are exported from FCP and delivered to Master Control. They are then

Thanks neuroanatomist. That was really helpful, but when I went in and looked in my SMS folder, I opened it under notepad and it was all garbled and hard to read. It didn't look like in my iphone of indicating conversations between me and another person. I could see my conversations, but they where all mixed in with numbers and weird characters I've never seen before. You wouldn't happen to know of another program out there that can put it perhaps like in a word doc. or even excel sheet? Something that's just organized. Thanks.

  • Blocky Still JPEG Photos in FCP in Timeline and Bounce

    Hey,
I'm really stuck here. I have been using final cut for the past few years always incorporating stills and PSD files to create effects for my spots. All the sudden with my HD time lines. All my Photoshop Files and JPEG files are really blocky. I thought it was a size issue (NOT) square pixels (NOT). If anyone one has any idea's please HELP!!!

    100% quality
When I brind the files in they look clear in the time line but have a GREEN render above them when I render the file it becomes blurry/blocky. I am exporting using H.264 High Quality.

Is the Quicktime compression: HDV 1080i60 the codec

  • Adding to the beginning of a FCP x timeline

I'd like to add something to the beginning of my timeline and move everything else to the right. Is there any way to do this? Every time I drag the clip to the beginning, all it does is place the clip on top of or below the clip that's already there...

You can, but you have to be careful if you're dragging and dropping. There's a very small window to fit it in. You might try using the insert edit button
    or W.

  • FCP ProRes Timeline to a SD DVD

This is my first time with an HD workflow, so pardon my basic question. My source material was AVCHD and I brought it into FCP using ProRes. The final product is going to DVD. Since I'm not burning a Blu-ray, is then my Compressor workflow an HD to SD DVD maintaining 16:9?
Any particular compression settings to be aware of?
    Thanks.

#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Blurring of text once motion file is imported to FCP

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now. I guess this could have been posted in the motion forum as well. When I create a simple text screen (black solid background) in Motion it looks as it should, but when I import that same file into FCP the text seems to lose a lot of quality and becomes blurred. Sometimes the quality is so bad that the crosses on T's and the dots on I's are not visible!
Both motion & fcp projects are set to 25fps. When I open Motion to start a new project I normally leave it to default (pal dv i think)
I'm sure this can easily be corrected so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
    Alex

Still receiving a number of Motion to FCP problems.
Not only is the text blurring when imported into FCP but motion files with for instance a particle emitter/behaviour (such as stars moving towards frame) is taking nearly 2 hours to render & even then when i go to play the file in fcp the timeline freezes with a 'dropped frames' pop up appearing.
    Help?!

  • Questions on Text in FCP

First let me thank all of you for the help over the last few days while im doing a student project on FCP which im taking a class for and learning.
OK, I need to do, as a assignment, like a text/graphic based car commercial. How can I change the color of the background that the text goes on? When I just select text it has a black background with white text. Also, when I highlight just a portion of the text it doesnt seem like I can adjust the font size just on part of the writing in the canvas (hope that makes sense). And how the heck do I pick a font, anyone got any cool ideas for font that kinda jump off the page?
    thanks

In FCP's basic Text generator, you can't selectively alter font size, everything has to be the same.
(the link provided should also answer your question about the 'black background' and introduce you to the Matte generator
To get around the single font size issue - and give yourself more choices for the cool font that you're looking for - press Control-Option-X to launch the Boris Title 3D text generator in the Viewer. Then see what your mind comes up with.
    Good luck.

  • Problems Involving text and FCP

I'm working on of the motion templates and the text that I am adding in motion, when I open the same project file in FCP the same text gets moved and is no longer in the same position.
    http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4611/screenshot20100225at914.png
This is a screen shot of what I am talking about. Notice the light blue text (Usion T(X)ENTY) is no longer in the same location in FCP as it was in Motion. Besides this I have noticed no other differences so I'm thinking it has something to do with the text. Thoughts?

    hi,
I sometimes get this kind of issue with fonts moving or not looking right in fcp or on export. I can cure it by building the effect in a different way. For example applying as fade behaviour will sometimes result in a pixel shift of the text in and out of the fade. But if i manually keyframe the opacity of the text its all fine. Sometimes shifting effects to parent layers and clicking their fixed resolution will cure it as well.

  • FCP X Audio Drop-Out or Audio Gap on Timeline.

    Hello fellow FCPX-ers.
I am posting this thread on a few forums as I have encountered a very weird issue taking place.
Trying to figure out if the issue I am encountering is a bug/glitch or a technical issue.
This has consistently occurred in three different projects now all shot at different times. The audio has been fine on the camera during the recording process and has been fine in it’s RAW NATIVE SOURCE.
    THE ISSUE
For some reason my audio keeps dropping out on my timeline and it is creating audio skips/clicks making it impossible to export proper audio or fix the gaps on the timeline.
Screenshots are attached to this thread for a visualization example.
I have followed the process and finished troubleshooting with it all the way to FCP X.
Thus, I am able to pinpoint that whatever is going on is a FCP X issue
The audio is fine until it reaches the FCP X timeline.
I have tested the RAW FILE in VLC player and there is no audio drop-outs
I have also tested the video file in Sony Vegas Video and the audio is fine.
    The Digital Workflow:
It start’s off as a .M2T file which is then run through Clipwrap 2.6.4 as a (rewrap as source format) and then eventually makes it into FCP X and is placed on the appropriate timeline.
I have had this same error for three different projects now.  It has occurred both when using the NATIVE VIDEO FORMAT and when trying to use the (rewrap 1920 x 1080 format)
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
    reggie-

You don't say what your audio settings are for Clipwrap. If you're exporting mp3/AAC or other player format, then FCPX is probably having problems dealing with those formats.
You might try selecting your audio (or related video) tracks and rendering (Control-R) and see if that fixes the dropouts. You can also try selecting the clips in the Event Browser, right-clicking and selecting Transcode from the popup (if the options are available.)
The "native" FCPX audio format is WAV( ! ) AIF/AIFF and CAF will work just as well.  The transcode options should be PCM (or LPCM,) 24 bits/sample and 48kHz sample rate (or "better" - but the sample rate should match your project settings.) If you have control over these options in Clipwrap, you should set them accordingly.

  • Importing a .mov for editing in FCP

I am working on a project for a client where they had me import a bunch of VOB files from DVDs for the purpose of editing and exporting in a Windows/PowerPoint friendly format like .wmv.
I'm using mpeg streamclip to convert the VOB files. Many of the clips feature footage combined with graphics/text.
When I first convert the VOB files to .mov, the text looks fine. As soon as I put it into FCP (using FCP HD), the text looks distorted and horrible.
I'm using the Flip4Mac plug-in for FCP to convert to .wmv, which does great on the footage, but the text still *****. I've tried adding a slight gaussian blur and a sharpness filter at about 40% - which helps, but not absolutely.
I know that I'm losing quality through all of the converting, but any ideas why the initially converted VOB looks fine and then turns to mush once imported into FCP?
    Thanks
    Jaimey

So its just the text? Like, it played fine both text and video then the video stayed good but the text went bad?? What a mystery....
For importing QT's sake of disscussion, most of these problems occur because you're trying to up-convert lower res videos to the SD (or HD) settings of FCP.
Also make sure you've rendered ALL of the timeline (especially the "green" people forget about)
Finally, try exporting a sample out of final cut pro to see if the problem will go away out of final cut.
    Good Luck!!
