FCP 5 universal

i have read apples site on universal software. straight to the point, which of the universal upgrades do i need to buy to get my DVD Studio 4, Motion 2 and Final Cut 5 powermac versions to work on my MacBook Pro with Intel processor. will the 199 DVD studio pro universal install work or do i have to buy each universal upgrade for each peace of software. apples 800 number takes too long and this discussion site is quicker. thanks for the help.

Ted,
The ONE upgrade Patrick speaks of is the Final Cut Studio package - the individual apps (FCP, DVD-SP, SoundTrack Pro, etc) are no longer available separately.
here's the link for information on Apple's crossgrade offer: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/

  • Crossgrade to FCP Universal

Getting an Intel Mac Pro, so we need the Final Cut Studio crossgrade - we have to return the original FCP install disks; will the replacement universal FCP install ok on a Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5, our current Mac, if we ever need to reinstall?

Yep, the universal binary is exactly that: it installs on both Intel and PPC hardware.
    I know because that's what I have.

  • FCP Universal Crossgrade

DEEPLY unhappy. I own a Macbook Pro, live in the UK and want to get a universal version of FCP. I look on the website and get the only crossgrade form has a US address. We phone Apple UK to ask if there is a UK address. Answer; "no, you have to send it to the US." So we bundle up all our master disks and send them registered mail to the US. Three weeks later we get them back with a note saying "this offer is only available within the 50 United States"
erm...sorry? What the ****? Not very universal is it....

    where were you looking?
did you check here on the UK page for Apple

  • FCP Universal

Just a quick question - apart from its Intel compatability, is there any difference between the my FCP 5.0 PowerPC install DVDs and the Universal install DVDs? Would I need to upgrade if I have no intention of getting an Intel mac?
    Thanks

The new features are listed here...

I suggest the cross-grade , the auto reconnect improvements and MM fixes alone would be worth the $49.00.

  • FCP Universal Crossgrade - still waiting

I sent mine crossgrade form out 5 days ago, so I'm hoping they will come in soon. I tried to check the status of my crossgrade online but I don't appear to be in their systems yet.
Anyone have a number that I can reach a "person" to ask about the status? Opposed to the automated number on the form that has general information not concerning the Crossgrade.
It's not easy being left in the dark with my FCP cd's out there and my new MacBook Pro coming in next week. I need my disks!
    Thanks,
    -Paul West

Mine took awhile to be updated in their system and I sent the form and disc out via overnight service. I checked the tracking (shipment) information and saw that it had been received, but I was not on the website yet. It took about 3 days for my info to show up on the website, so you have to allow them sometime.
If you sent out your form and disc via standard service (5-7 days), add an additional 3 days for your info to post. Then another week after your status changes to shipped. It took about 2 weeks for me to get my discs from the day I sent the form to the day I received the package.

  • Quicktime export from FCP universal, audio export function

Hey there, I just recently bought the 17 inch mac book pro and did the crossgrade swap to the latest version of FCP studio.
Doing my first complete video edit and DVD project and am at the export stage.
I am doing what I normally do on my dual 2.5 g5 and setting and IN point and an OUT point in FCP and exporting using quicktime.
Just as the defaults, (I do this and have done this dozens and dozens of times)
I do this, then I import that file (after FCP is done into compressor and go from there)
we all know the export using compressor thing isnt ready for primetime..
anyway, doing this and after the first dialgo box is done and it seems the whole thing is done...then a box comes up saying its exporting AUDIO and its going to take 4 hours!
I didnt choose this extra step, the default quicktime export dealy (not "using quicktime conversion) had all this covered I thought...I mean, it has every other time on the OTHER computer)
I canceled this and checked my resulting exported file (the quicktime one) and all the audio and video is intact..
but the process I cancelled bothers me...any ideas?
    thanks so much

    > sorry I am all over the place info wise maybe
No problem - we all find it hard to explain things clearly when we're frustrated by problems like this!
Well that's strange - but at least it's clear what's happeneing now!
I'm at a loss really but if it were me, I'd trash the preferences and repair permissions, then if that didn't work, I'd create a new project in FCP and transfer the clips over. Sometimes this can iron out strange bugs.
Failing all, I'd create a new ID on my Mac and work from there - but if this works, then Jerry's advice regarding the clean install is a must, really.
Another thing I'd try is exporting direct through Compressor - it's a wonderful tool and you really should get to know it. It would be worth using Compressor to export a QT movie to see whether it makes any difference.
Is the full project on the G5 as well as the MBP?

  • Newly INstalled FCP Studio Universal - No Firewire Recognition!

I use a Canopus ADVC-110 via a Firewire to digitize from analog sources and feed my timeline to an external monitor.
Since I installed FCP Universal, I cannot get the software to acknowledge that there is a firewire device connected to the computer. I trashed prefs and still - no recognized firewire device.
    Any help out there???

whether it works in your situation or not, I don't know, but I don't think it can hurt.

  • Aliasing in Final Cut Pro 4.5 and on 20inch wide screen Dell monitors

Hello everyone. I have a question that has been stumping me for a few weeks and then realized that I should ask the best forum in the world. First off, all the standard def. videos that I work with in FCP 4.5 appear to be aliasing and this also has been consistently happening in QuickTime outside of FCP. When I output videos to DVD or tape the tapes look great on my broadcast monitor and TV. I have tried a variety of screen settings in my preferences and still nothing. I have ensured that everything on the timeline has been rendered. As of now, I'm fresh out of ideas. So I was wondering if anyone out there in FCP Universe has experienced something similar to this and may have some suggestions that might prevent me from pulling what little hair I have left out of my head. Thanks a bunch
    Erv

If you're only watching on your computer monitor, you will not see full quality - you need to watch on a TV or Broadcast monitor. There's a whole section in your manual on how to hook up a TV to your system.
If you're looking at DV footage in Quicktime, QT Player is only showing half the resolution and doubling it. You need to set the video to High Quality. (somewhere under cmd-j).

  • Themes not rendering

    Hi.
I just tried iMovie 6's themes, and none of them seems to render.
Preview is fine, but when applying (=validating) the themed clip, it just does not work :
    - the clip in the timeline appears with the "original" photos attached to the theme, not the one I added from the iPhoto library
    - there is no rendering at all happening of the themed clip
    - when previewing frames from the themed clip, frames appear black.
I checked these forums fro answers and could not make it work.
Here are a few things I checked/ tried:
    - movie projects are stored in my home folder in the internal, journaled-HFS+ formatted startup drive
    - I removed all Quicktime plug-ins (checked both user and computer folders), including flip4mac, divx, perian, as well a the A52 audio component; I just had to re-add some in order to iMovie to start properly (AppleHDVCodec.component, AppleIntermediateCodec.component and DesktopVideoOut.component)
    - I reinstalled iMovie from the MBP's install DVDs and re-ran the 6.0.3 updater.
This behaviour happens on my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini Core Duo.
On the MBP, I had FCP (Universal binary) installed, but removed some of its assets and apps because my HD was full.
iMovie 6 (and themes) works very well on my girlfriend's brand new black MacBook, although I also installed Flip4Mac, perian and A52 codec).
I had never uses themes before and am just very disappointed, not being able to use them, now that I've discovered them (they're great for making movies out of photos).
Of course, in a few weeks, iMovie 7 will problaby be out and I'll buy it.
But I'd really like to solve (as well as understand) this problem with iMovie 6 first.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jérôme.

    In response to Sue's post,
Quicktime and QuickTime Player versions are 7.1.3.
I know I miss the latest Final Cut Studio updates (haven't used it recently) but I thought that would not change a thing if I disable QuickTime plug-ins anyway.
My serial number is at home and necessary to download the latest Final Cut updates.
If you think that could be important, I will do it tonight.
Here is what happens with themes in iMovie.
    - I create a new movie (HDV 720p) in my Movies folder
    - I choose the travel theme and the Lower Third template. The template loads and previews in the main window
    - I drag a photo from the media/Photos/iPhoto panel to the drop zone ; the template now previews in the main window with the photo I chose (which seems like normal behaviour)
-When I click the checkbox in the preview window on the far right, a new clip is added to the timeline (which again seems normal)
However, the clip is not normal :
    - its thumbnail in the timeline is strictly identical to the theme/template thumbnail : the photo I chose does and dragged to the drop zone does not appear
    - I cannot play the clip, and the play button is dimmed
    - Any frame of the clip I preview, by dragging the playhead, is black (no theme, no photo)
    - The clip appears as unrendered, with a red line under it. That line never moves.
    - When I try to save, I get a warning about a "rendering in progress". that is after 1 hour, a 5 seconds theme/template, and a standard 5 Megapixels JPEG photo
    - If I "stop rendering", save the project, close it then reopen it, the clip is gone.
That happens also with a 400*400 JPEG photo.
Hope that is clearer for you Karl.
If necessary, I can post screen captures of this -iPhoto and iWeb still work
    Thanks in advance,
    Jerome.

  • G5 works with Mac Book Pro

I own a dual 2.0 G5 with FCP Studio, from what I get in the apple website is that for $49.00 I could crossgrade to FCP Studio Universal. My question is: If my project media goes directly to a removable hard drive, can I go back and forth with the Project from MAc Book Pro (Laptop) and the G5, does anyone know if this is possible? Do I have to intall FCP STUDIO Universal on both machines?
Thanks in advance for any comments.
    Rogeliol

of course you'd need to install it on both.
You don't need to belittle people asking an honest question. Your post could be viewed as inflammatory (with regards to the user agreement).
He means, can he open his project with FCP native running on the G5, and FCP UNIVERSAL BINARY running on the laptop.
Rogelio, I don't know the answer to your question, but will try to find out. In the meantime, just disregard any posters who are rude when responding to a question. There are lots of nice folks on this board, as well.

  • Upgraded Project Playing Render Files Instead of Normal Clips

Project upgraded to Mac Pro and FCP Universal is playing rendered files where native format clips are placed in the timeline. The called-for native clip begins fine but a portion of a rendered file from another part of the timeline will suddenly appear. Over a half-hour program this happens 78 times.
Why did you transfer an uncompleted work without finishing, you ask? G5 went down under AppleCare. The 2 to 5 day repair window is now on day 14, despite repeated promises to have the G5 back "tomorrow." Time sensitve project on a dead line. Purchased a new Mac Pro with FCP Universal.
Tried deleting corrupted clips from timeline and replacing with original clips from bins. Taking too much time.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PROBLEM FIXED! Don't know what the cause was...perhaps corruption during transfer.
Solution came by making a copy of the sequence, creating a new project then placing the copied sequence into the new project's timeline. Timeline plays as it should.

  • Convert 29.97 to 23.98

    Hello all,
I know this topic exists already, but I can't find it. I think I'm probably wording my search criteria incorrectly.
At any rate (no pun intended), I am asking this question in advance (again, no pun intended). I have some clips that were captured at 29.97, but were APPARENTLY shot in 24pa. I tried a remove pulldown after the fact, no dice. I imported the clips into Cinema Tools for a reverse telecine, no dice. Now, I am going to re-capture the clips in the proper 23.98 vidrate (STILL fixing the mistakes of that other editor who is no longer working with us) and try again. If the same issues arise, then I know the DP made a mistake and didn't record in 24pa afterall.
If this is the case, should I use Compressor 2 to convert the clips to 23.98 and check the "progressive" option? I've heard good things about using Compressor to convert 29.97 to 23.98 from DVXUser.com. Anyone think there is a better way? "Reshoot" is out of the question. :-p
Thanks In Advance (go ahead and take the pun)!
    ~Athen
    Oh, P.S.
Shane, my monitors arrived. I've only hooked one up because I am still waiting for the Quad and FCP Universal, but I must say the picture and size are FANTASTIC!! My employers might be going HD sooner rather than later and I am recommending these monitors for the facilities upgrade!

the video appears a little interlaced. I can see some jaggies on motion frames. This, of course, leads me to believe the recording mode wasn't 24p or 24pa.
Both 24p and 24pa involve interlacing, actually. The difference is the pattern of Progressive and Interlaced frames
What you need to do is determine the pattern of the interlacing. Open a clip in Cinema Tools and (unfortunately) step thru it frame-by-frame.
    The pattern for 24p footage will be: P P I I P
    The pattern for 24pa footage will be: P P I P P
A real-world rule of thumb is that with 24p footage, you'll see 3 progressive frames in a row. If it's 24pa footage, you'll have 4 progressive frames in a row when stepping thru.
Having said that, your memory error in Cinema Tools isn't exactly inspiring confidence. That is, your issue might be one of corrupted captures.

  • The Crossgrade ended???

So i just purchased a macbook pro, and i guess i missed the deadline of the 19th for the FCP crossgrade by 1 day.
Why was this a temporary promotion when FCP users continue to buy intel macs? Now are we supposed to buy another full version of FCP universal? Or buy an upgrade? thats ridiculous. I shouldnt get punished becuase they swithced processors.
    whats up?

thats ridiculous. I shouldnt get punished
    becuase they swithced processors.
I was waiting almost 3 months (because in my country Apple wasn't so fast with this) for the crossgrade disks, but even with this very long time I can say: thank you Apple for this kind of upgrade.
Still I have PPC's Mac and I have no idea when I will change to Intel Mac. But it doesn't matter when! I have the Universal Final Cut Studio now - working on G5 and being ready for any MacPro.
Whats more! I did the crossgrade from Motion2 to Complete FCS paying only 199 Euro (290 $). So, I can say that the complete package of FCS costs me only about 470 Euro (685 $)! not 1299 Euro (about 1750 $ today)
So, don't complain because it's not fair. Everybody who wanted - could crossgrade to Universsal version (even without having Intel Mac or any Mac!)and the prices were very attractive for a very long time...
    Marek.

  • Motion Icons Missing

Having the latest version of Motion installed for months I launched it and all the icons are missing. The buttons on the "Welcome to Motion" screen are blank. They don't contain any graphics. The main window's buttons now display text and a large space above them for the graphics, but again, no graphics. I also noticed the Timeline's graphics don't show either. The color separators used for defining the life of an object are not visible.
I have just re-installed motion from the FCP universal CD's but receive the same results.
Anyone else run into this. I am running 10.4.7.
    Thanks.

Hi. This problem is only limited to Motion at this point. The preferences I mentioned where those internal to Motion. The Motion > Preferences > General and Appearance show up fine but with out Icon graphics on each button at the top of the window frame. I am going to reload the entire system due to other instabilities noticed over the past 24 hours (ie. address book dumping all my addresses, Mail locking up repeatedly, etc...).
This system has been stable for at least 6 months when I reloaded it before due to stability problems with FCP. I will need to check into possible drive or hardware issues next. But hey, at least I am not reloading every 6 weeks due to spyware like I did with Windows XP.

  • HT4480 I have redemption codes for FCP from my university - how many machines can I install on?

I have redemption codes for FCP from my university - how many machines can I install on?

Do you have these codes because this will be your app? Or is this a "loan" from the school to install on your machine? Do you use your own Apple ID to redeem the code and install the app?
If it is your app, then you may install it on as many Macs as you own or have in your control.
