FCP 6.0.1 hangs...

After I capture for my HDV device (Sony), FCP gives the spinning wheel of death and I'm Forced quit on FCP.
FCP seems to be very fragile when it comes to capturing video/audio -- still.
So for the heck of it I open iMovie HD and it recognizes my camcorder without any of my input, I click on Import and it captures the footage. Can't belive a product that came with my MacPro actually does a better job than a $1700+ product?
What the heck is going on?
Rob.

I'm a software engineer and I know what a user error is and having a spinning wheel that never stops spinning with NO information ever provided to the user is MOST DEFINITELY NOT user error.
There are two basic approaches to managing user input:
1. Don't let them shoot themselves in the foot
2. If you do let them shoot themselves in the foot at least trap for it and let them know which foot they hit
Neither of these is happening in FCP 6. I don't see how you can equate a spinning wheel and FCP not responding to being "user error" -- simply because FCP has stopped responding (you have no way of knowing anything).
I agree FCP is not simple and that is fine, no complaints there -- it's a great product and I love it for what it can do. But when it comes to working with other devices it was fragile in FCS and is fragile in FCS2 -- it should at the very least "timeout" if it is having a problem working with the device/camcorder. I define "fragile" as meaning if something is NOT configured exactly right (aka user shooting themselves in the foot) FCP should not go to never never land (spinning wheel of death) with the only way to come back to reality is with a Force to Quit.
But regardless of whether this is or isn't user error (which really is NOT relevant), no information is provide to help the user avoid the situation or even attempt to fix the situation. For what has cost me $1800 -- connecting to an external device/camcorder should NOT be a roll the dice situation.
$1300 FCS + upgrade to FCS2 $500 = about $1800 actually.
Rob.

  • FCP Export using Compressor hangs 'em both

I searched for the answer earlier this week. Didn't find anything, but I eventually figured it out. Here was my problem:
The Compressor preferences allow you to choose a default preset. I never had defined a default preset, and things worked fine. When I do choose a default preset (I chose DVD Best Quality: 120min: All), there were problems. Selecting sequences in FCP and doing "Export using Compressor" results in a hang on both apps.
The number of sequences or their lengths seem to have no effect on the process. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same problem.
    Alan

This sounds different from my problem. I was getting a hang when the sequences were being added to the batch list. It wouldn't even give me a chance to submit the batch. Maybe someone else has a clearer idea of what you're experiencing.

  • ALRIGHT, FCP- Share- AVCHD officially HANGS!! NOOOOO

so i exported 30 minutes of hdv 1080i60 and 8 hours later the status is stuck at encoding the video file and it just sits at 8 minutes left of encoding after 2 hours. Again, 8 hours later, it says 2 hours elapsed. no burned dvd. it was a menu, and just had one my psd's as the graphic...thats it. i got snow leopard, fcs3, all up to date, 3 gigs of ram, all media is on a lacie 7200 drive with plenty of space. i have tried diff blank dvds....all of which were dvd-r.
now the million dollar question....WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!

First, do not put the disc in the drive before you begin the process. Wait to be instructed to insert the disc. Second, it might help a lot if you had far fewer applications open.
Try exporting to QuickTime Movie and using Compressor to create a batch template. In job actions for the batch you can add your background and logo just like the Share function in FCP.

  • FCP X hanging when loading an event

After my external HD got disconnected while editing, I rebooted the program but FCP X is just hanging on the start up at 'loading "xxx" event' What can I do? Is the event corrupted?

yes, I think it could be that your even got corrupted. Try removing it for the even folder and put it on the desktop if FCP X loads ok then you have to delete the even. that what I had to do :-( ...thanks to apple

  • Fcp 7 hangs on choose setup

I'm using FCP 7.0.3 on a 2011 MacBook Pro 15" i7 with 8Gb ram. Suddenly when I startup FCP the startup proces hangs on the "choose setup" screen. I cannot choose anything (just get a 'ploink' sound when I try to do so) and have to quit using Force Quit. I repaired permissions, threw away the FCP preferences... doesn't help. The strange thing is that this problem suddenly appeared and I didn't change anything recently (no new plugins or other programs). What's happening here?

    1. Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on your system hard drive.
    2. [Trash Final Cut Pro preference files|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9756086&#9756086].

  • FCP Beachball

I have noticed since I installed a PCI Sata controller card, and new ram, plus new drives, I have been having problems.FCP (5.1.4) hangs up and I get the S.B.B.O.D. I must then push the power button to shut down. The drives are 500G western digital My Book externals. Connected to the PCI card via sata cables. Operating system 10.4.11. I have 8 gigs of ram. I added 6 Buffalo pieces in matched pairs, to my existing Apple ram. The PCI card is a Norco 4 import card, rated for either a PCI X OR PCI Mac system. I have downloaded Rember which I intended to check my ram today, I have used Tech Tools and everything checks out. I am in no hurry because I am done limping through my last project and have time to figure this out. .I have a Dual 2 GHz Power Pc G5. I was certain that after I came home and loaded the ram the card and the drives I would be in the fast lane, it was also told to me by the reseller he used the exact setup on his G5 identical and it was mind boogeling at the speed....ya right, its mind boogeling alright. Sometimes applications do not quit they have to be force quit...FCP will work until I leave the computer for 10 minutes or so. First an Icon like a reel of film replaces the curser, if you move the curser it becomes the %$&%^%& Beachball. At this point your only option is to push the start up button and hard quit. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

Well, you've not added anything to the CPU's speed... but I don't see anything that's not compatible here. Have you set your system up to not spin down the drives in the energy control panel? Might try that if it's set to let the computer go to sleep. Don't let it. Monitors are OK, but spinning down the drives in a FCP5.x system can result in the beach ball routine.
If you've not rebuilt that startup disk in a while, it's likely that doing so might speed things up a bit.

  • Send to FCP after reconforming

    The problem in steps
    - I sent a sequence to Color for grading
    - Graded all shots
    - Rendered
    - Sent to FCP
    - Replaced some media in the FCP sequence
    - Exported as XML
    - Back in Color, reconformed the current project (the one sent to FCP) against the XML exported in the previous step
    - Graded the new shots
    - Sent to FCP
    - FCP only shows the progress bar up to 50%, then hangs. Clicking on the button does nothing.
The only workaround is to kill FCP.
Started with fresh FCP prefs, but still hangs when sending back from Color to FCP.
The only option was to save all grades and Send to Color the sequence, then apply all saved grades, then render and Send to FCP.
Conclusion: Sending back to FCP after reconforming hangs FCP.
I can't determine what XML command is hanging FCP
    Any good idea from anybody?
    Cheers
    Esteban

  • FCP X problems after Yosemite 10.10.2/iTunes 12.1 update

    FCPX 10.1.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2 w/ iTunes 12.1 installed on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
After installing the Yosemite 10.10.2 update and the iTunes 12.1 update, FCP has been brought to a halt on new projects. When importing a ProRes 422 clip (NTSC SD, 29.97, )  into a clean/empty library results in what appears to be a hang while generating audio waveforms for the clip.  I am not able to skim the clip in the viewer.  If I create an empty project, and then write the clip to the empty timeline, FCP also appears to hang on audio waveform generation (although Activity Monitor does NOT reflect an unresponsive app, and there is not spinning beach ball, etc.).
I can open an existing library, where waveforms and thumbs have already been generated, and successfully skim/scrub clips and project timelines.
Screenshot of the background process window:

    Hi Luis,
ok i have just completely wiped it off my system with all traces trashed..
i will go ahead now and install FCPX version 10.1.4 as i see it on the app store and shall report back once re-installed with results..
    thank you for your suggestions..

  • Flaky Firewire bus after bad crash

I had a really bad crash last week while working in FCP (slow beachball then a total freeze). I had an AJA IOHD attached to the rear FW800 port; for those not in the know, that's a self-powered video I/O box for capture and playback that uses FW instead of a PCI slot. It takes over the WHOLE FW bus when you use it, can't even have a hard drive plugged in or it freaks out. Anyway, after the crash the IOHD was acting weird, would freeze the computer whenever FCP was launched. I reinstalled the drivers and ran fsck in SU mode and got the machine back to the point it wouldn't freeze. But the IO was still being glitchy, kept going briefly 'offline' and dropping frames on playback.
The IOHD runs fine on my MacBook Pro. And, I just tried the front FW800 port on the Mac Pro and that works fine too. So the issue seems limited to the back FW800 port. What could I have done to it? It's not totally burned out, cuz a FW800 drive plugged in back there runs normally. But it just doesn't want to communicate with the IOHD properly now. Not sure if there's anything software-wise I can do to fix it; if it is a hardware repair, anyone know what a FW bus replacement runs? Or would they have to swap the motherboard? (and of course, my Applecare just ran out)
    JK

Uggh, no good. It was doing fine after I reset the SMU, but while I was running video through the IOHD from FCP it started to drop frames again. Also, bits of digital static and noise all over the external monitor (connected via HDMI to IOHD) even though the footage itself is clean. The unit was not going online/offline at first but then FCP froze, and when I force quit it that behavior returned as well. FCP report just said "hang" as the cause of the problem. Similar flaky behavior (though not as bad) in Motion.
Anything else I should try before I declare that FW port borked? Reset the PRAM perhaps?

  • Viewing multiple camera angles at the same time

    Hello -
Basic question, that I'm sure has been answered many times before - so apologies for the repeat!
I have been asked to take over editing some shows and gigs, which are filmed from up to four different camera angles. Each operator starts their camera, then runs it for the whole performance - so you end up with four long clips of video. The guy I am taking over from tells me that once you've got the four clips correctly aligned, it's actually a relatively simple job IF you can view all four clips at the same time. I basically need to be able to watch the whole show from start to finish, watching all four angles at the same time and doing a rough edit as I go, then go back and neaten things up.
    1. Will Final Cut Express do this?
    2. If the program can do it, am I right in thinking my iMac might be a bit underpowered?
As you can probably tell, I'm not at all down with the lingo on video editing, so I hope my question makes sense!
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

    Hi
A VERY Good Answer from Tom.
I do this in a slightly different way.
    Videos on one track each
Re-sized to 25% as Tom describes
    Moved to sync.
Then I don't use the blade tool - BUT adjust transparicy. So that needed angle get 100%
    rest goes to 0%
Finalicing by re-sizing all back to 100%
    Done
BUT if You can finance it - THIS is much easier to be done in FCP when getting the hang of
how it works here. Much more like a Real-Time editing situation - Click on the view You like
You don't even need to be very excat - Easily fixed with "roll tool" (I think it's named)
If Time is of essence and mony not - FinalCut Pro about 10 times faser to me
If other way around ==> FCE
    Yours Bengt W

  • FCP hangs because of Hard Drvie

    Hi,
This is a drive problem primarily I think, and it hangs FCP.
If I leave my iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM running OS 10.6.5 for an hour or so, the Rocstor Eagleroc 1.5TB (in FIrewire 800 mode) hangs and cannot be accessed, even though I have Energy Saver's 'put the hard disks to sleep' unticked.
I have the computer sleep after an hour, but all my other drives can be accessed when i return. This hangs my Final Cut Pro and is extremely annoying. What to do please?
The drive is chained (via a Firewire 800 to 400 cable) to a DVD burner which is chained to another firewire drive, which is off at the moment.
I have installed Disksomina from Digital Heaven (http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/disksomnia), that hasn't changed things for the better with this particular drive.

Thanks Patrick, I'll investigate the fan issue, and also whether the drive hangs when used with other applications (it's the Capture Scratch for my FCP). In any case, I wrote to Rocstor, and they suggested disconnecting other drives chained to it, which I did, but nothing's changed - if I leave the computer overnight, in the morning I find FCP not responding, and when I try to open folders on the drive via the finder, it shows as if they're empty, and then the Finder crashes, even force-quitting doesn't recover it, and then I simply have to re-start the OS, which is very annoying.

  • FCP 'hangs' during app start-up

    Hey all,
I had a similar post earlier this week but now the SBBOD is happening during Final Cut's boot up. To be exact, it hangs right after it doesn't 'see' my DVCAM deck. Although I've tried starting FCP with and without the deck on...it still just sits...with the spinning beach ball.
    Anyone have/had this issue?
Restarting the computer seems to fix it but there's obviously a problem somewhere.
And here are my system's stats: OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.5, & QT 7.5.5
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Trashed preferences?
    Yes
    Run Disk Utility?
    Yes*
    Any recent software updates?
    Nope
Tried creating a new user account and opeing FCP from there?
    Not yet...but don't think that'll help...but will try that.
Checked the problem projects for CMYK graphics or file/graphic/render corruption?
I was one of the original responders that figured out the CMYK issues when they first arose
Have you recently done a major OS upgrade? If so, did you do a clean archive/wipe/install?...or did you use Migration Assistant? I don't believe clean system os installs are ever the answer...especially when issues come up out of the blue.
    No
*I think it's still a hard drive issue (using an external FW drive) even though disk utility says everything's fine.

  • What is the ability of FCP X without hang-up?

I am using Mac Book Pro with retina display OS X Mavericks 10.9 (Processor: 2.3 GHz, Intel core i7, Memory: 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3).  In one project, approximately upto how many GB of HD content can the FCP X  take the load without the color wheel indication of hang-up? Can I go upto 100 GB of HD content to work smoothly?  Thanks.

In spite of the huge size of the video, can it work smooth in FCP X without hang-up OR what factors of my specification could limit the smooth working.
Suggestion: Download the 30 trial and  find out first hand.
Limitations on processing your big clip are goingto be more a function of your hardware than FCPX.

  • FCP hangs (temporarily) without using any CPU

Sometimes my FCP decides to take a coffee break or something: it just hangs, sometimes for many minutes at a time. Almost invariably it unhangs eventually if I just let it sit for long enough. Sometimes it does this while "preparing video for display" and sometimes it just goes out to lunch for no apparent reason and I get the SBOD. In either case, the strange thing is that CPU usage (as measured by TOP via a terminal window) shows that FCP is using almost no CPU while this is happening. The entire machine is almost completely idle.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on?
    Thanks.

Its probably just while we're hacking in and messing with your stuff Ron

  • FCP hang

    Hi all,
    I'm currently running FCP 6.03 on an iMac 24' 3.06 running OS10.5.3.
While digitising at pal 48 from a Sony DSR-40p through firewire to a WD fw800 raid drive I'm getting frequent freezes after about 10 or 12 minutes of digitising. It is fairly erratic will sometimes get through whole tape and then crash on the last clip in batch capture. My mac is only a few weeks old and this is my first project, any advice out there about what to check? What is the maximum length of clip that FCP can handle. Is it better to capture onto internal drive and then xfer to WD drive? Would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks in advance.

oy. do you have an IT help. I used to teach Avid editing at SVA here in NY and they basically had someone fulltime to manage the avid lab. It is a fulltime job.
And it's next to impossible to control what your students are doing. Are they allowed to bring in media? Nonstandard or wonky media can cause problems.
One thing I might suggest is that you create alternate startup disks for use when working with fcp. Keep this startup drive as clean as possible and see if that effects the hangs.
