FCP 6.0.2 captures black (Uncompressed 10bit PAL)
Hi all,
The fun and games continue...
Since upgrading to OSX 10.5 and being forced up to FCP 6.0.2 (someone else's projects..), all my captures have resulted in plain black quicktimes. It records the timecode data but just sees black footage where vision should be. (If that makes sense)
I'm capturing via a Decklink Extreme, from a J-series Digi Beta. My capture codec is the Uncompressed 10bit one. I have no issues controlling the digi, but the preview window is black also. I occasionally experienced this problem on FCP 5.x, but a full power down then restart always solved it. No such luck this time. Is there any way to roll back the FCP install to 6.0.1? Or any hacks around the problem?
Okay, time to give myself +1 gold star for answering my own questions, and -1 black cross for knee-jerk narrow mindedness.
Somewhere in between 10.4 / 6.0.1 and 10.5 / 6.0.2 the Decklink changed its input from SDI to component (Preferences / Decklink / Settings / Set Input). Fixed.

FCP 10.1 DV capturing from camera breaking the scenes into unwanted clips by flashing a black screen on import window. But its fine and accurate with adobe premiere pro cc ?
Any solution * Advance ThanksFCP X will import into separate clips every time it detects a scene change (as when you stopped and started recording in the camera). There is no option to avoid this, as far as I known.
You may try importing from camera using Quicktime Player X and then bringing the imported file into FCP X. -
Plain vanillla "Uncompressed 10bit" with AJA Kona ??
Hi,
I'm going to be capturing some PAL 10bit Uncompressed footage from DigiBeta using a system with an AJA Kona card (I dont know exactally which model).
I'll be using the footage on another system with a different card (BlackMagic DeckLinkPro HD). Here is my question: Can I capture the footage using Apple's plain vanilla "Uncompressed 10bit" codec, or do I have to use the AJA codec? I want to avoid any color shifting.

MatthewWell, I have heard about this as well. What you do is upconvert to the uncompressed codec of choice, or capture to that codec and then color correct, adjust the colors. The other machine, while they might have an AJA or Decklink, will play out that codec.
AFAIK. Wait for other to chime in...my experience in this area is minor.

Problems with dropped frames in FCP 4.5 Log & Capture
Thanks for the advice on my previous post regarding sound problems - those are now sorted, but I am having problems with dropped frames in Log and Capture. I am using FCP 4.5 with OS X 10.4.10 on a Powermac G4. CPU 867 mhz dual processor. L2 Cache 256 kb, L3 cache 1 mb. Memory 1g. Bus speed 133hz. I am capturing from a Canon XM1 via Firewire. The scratch disk is a 500gb Seagate FreeAgent USB 2.0, 7200rpm.
Basically, the video and audio are fine while playing back in Log and Capture and I can control the device, but any attempt to capture, whether Capture Now or Clip result in a very jerky picture and aborts with dropped frames after a few seconds. The sound is ok for the few seconds before it aborts. There do not appear to be any problems with the timecode.
My capture preset is DV Pal 48hz.
Any advice or pointers gratefully received.
Thanks, AllyWell quite. I have just tried it in the internal hard drive and it works fine now. I am going to have to capture everything to my small hard drive and move it across to the external. Then, when I have finished I am going to bang my head against the wall and buy an external HDD with Firewire.

Video blaster editor capturing Black and White, no sound
I am using a video blaster editor to capture video from a Canon HV20 using component out. ?For some reason it is capturing black & white and with no sound. ?Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Welcome to discussions. I use a Canopus ADVC 100. It's similar to yours. I've never had a problem with it. I've used it connected to a VCR and an analog video camera. Then imported the video into im for various projects.
Try this. First clean the heads on your VCR. Connect an RCA cable to the L/R/ V out on the VCR. Next, connect it to the Canopus front panel - in. Connect the fire wire out on the Canopus front to the firewire in on the Mac.
Put the VHS tape in the VCR. Don't start it yet.
Open im. Set im for a new project. Turn on the Canopus from the on off switch at the back. From the input select button on the top left front of the canopus, select analog in.
Press play on your VCR. im should recognize the signal. In im select import. Your video should begin importing fine. The qulaity of the images on your computer screen will appear to be poor -- dark, faded, etc. This poor quality is for two reasons. First, analog tape can degrade fast depending on how often the tape was used previously, and how it was stored and at what tempertures.
Second, im will display the image darker because of conversion. But, don't worry. Once you burn the finished product to DVD, you'll be surprised how clear the picture is compared to what you viewed in im.
Make sue your DIP switches on the bottom of the canopus were/ are put back to the original settings.

Does FCP allow you to capture to 15:1, 2:1, 1:1 like Avid?
When I capture on Avid I can choose to capture at 15:1, 2:1, 1:1, etc. in order to save HD space.
Does FCP allow a similar capture choice?
If not - does it capture everything at 1:1?I suppose I'm gonna' get trashed for asking this but here goes anyway.
With One Terrabyte drives going for less than $300. why would anyone choose to go through capturing at low rez then having to take the time and effort to recapture/up-rez after a project is finished?
I know, that's the way we did it when all we had was $80,000. Avids with 9 GB drives... but surely I am not the only one who has changed his workflow? -

Try making a custom setting. One thing that annoys me about Decklink is that they have a SHORT list of Presets. When I had the Extreme 3D installed, I had ProRes LT and ProRes HQ...no ProRes 422, no ProRes Proxy. BMD's suggestion was to duplicate a preset and customize it to fit my needs. They wanted a short list, because they felt people would be daunted by the HUGE list. AJA gives the FULL list...they know we aren't daunted.
Duplicate a preset and modify it to suit your needs...see if it works. -
Blackmagic Card into FCP is only capturing Black/White video .. need help
Hey all, I just bought a Blackmagic Decklink SP video card. Going into FCP when digitizing video only comes in Black and White.
Here's the setup:
OLD VHS player (RCA out) into the Blackmagic card (BNC).
We're just using the (Y-in from deck) cable that came with the breakout cables. This is plugged into the VHS deck with a BNC to RCA adapter.
Does anyone what might be causing this ?
Is there a setting that I'm missing.

It isn't long, and it shows the proper way to deal with tapeless footage in FCP. Step 1: BACKUP THE CARD! Never import directly from the card. You need a backup first. Unless you are in a hurry, then you can import and backup later...before you erase the card.
But this camera is tricky...it shoots SD to those cards. Standard Def. With the world moving to High Def, I'm not sure that was the wisest purchase. You really should be getting an HD camera.
As for the computers...do they all have the same OS version? QT version? FCP version? They all should be at least at Mac OS 10.6.8, QT 7.6.6, and FCP 7.0.3.
But yeah...get a different camera. And HD one. And show that video in class. Instill proper tapeless workflows while they are young! -

Uncompressed 10Bit Preset To DVD Problem
Hi- Someone please help!
I'm working with 10Bit Uncompressed FCP files in a sequence. I then output as Quicktime Movie and bring into Compressor using the DVD best 2pass encoder setting. Then i bring this into DVD Studio Pro and burn. My end result is a DVD with a jumpy picture. I've gone back into FCP and used Media Manager to copy all files and the end result was the same. What am I doing wrong?

Ideally, I would like DVDSP to do all the encoding and I've tried using QT movies directly with DVDSP before but I always get "video bit rate too high" errors. Any idea what settings I should have for DVDSP to avoid that problem? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Capture SD uncompressed 720 x 480 with Kona LH?
Previous projects I used my G5 with Final Cut 5 and an AJA IO, to capture Uncompressed SD at 720 x 480. Now with my MacPro, Kona LH, Final Cut 6 it will only allow me to capture 720 x 486 Uncompressed SD. Anyone else experience this? I know I'm probably the only one still using SD, but I'd like to get my new footage to mix with previously captured video for DVD. Source footage is Beta SP, component input.
Ok, let me repeat myself. I want to edit in Uncompressed SD 720 x 480. So i want to capture a format that matches that, so that FCP wont have to render or stretch or scale. I'm having a hard time getting the Kona to do what the LO does. I am not using a different codec. Everything matches except frame size.
Anyway, i haven't really gotten any farther than when I've started. I know I can use compressor, or squeeze or numerous hardware or software encoders to change my video to match my sequence, but that defeats the purpose. I might as well just let FCP convert it. I have quite a few hours of footage and want to eliminate any extra steps. -
FCP 6.0.2 - Capture Successful - Clips not saved! Help!
I'm running FCP 6.0.2 on OS X 10.4.11
I have a Sony HDR-FX1 camera and do most of my filming in SD DV.
I'm trying to capture footage on several tapes (about an hour per tape) using the Log and Capture method. The camera is plugged into my front firewire port. I've logged the tapes (as 1 hour clips) and have tried doing a batch capture several times.
Here's the problem:
The clip is captured for the entire hour and I'm presented with the message that the capture was successful. I proceed to click "Finish" and my clip stills shows as "offline" in the final cut pro browser. Also, when I look in my FCP "Capture Scratch" folder, the respective project folder is completely empty.
In other words, FCP is not saving my captured clips for some reason.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have and am willing to try anything at this point!
Thanks in advance for your help.Yeah - oddly enough, I don't run into this problem with shorter clips - just captured one that was 30 minutes long. But I really don't want to split these long clips up - it's easier to sync up the multiple angles when I'm dealing with clips that are all the same length.
You would think that if FCP encountered a problem while capturing these clips, it would give me some sort of warning - but no, it says successfully captured and then just doesn't save the darn clips! So frustrating to sit here for an hour watching it capture and have nothing to show for it. It's failed 8 times so far (that's 8 hours I'll never get back!) -
Perturbing FCP 7 Log and Capture Question
I tried to digitize some HDV footage this afternoon, in theway I’ve always done it, but now suddenly it doesn’t work. Details to follow, but first my rig:
Mac Pro (Nehalem 2009) running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, NOFIREWIRE 400 PORTS
Final Cut Studio 2 with FCP 7
Sony Z1U HDV/SD videocamera connecting to Mac Pro via i.linkcable (aka firewire); I am using this to ingest because I can’t afford a deckat the moment. I know about thewear on the heads, etc., etc.
OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro external media drive connected tocomputer via eSATA.
Here’s the scenario (keeping in mind that I’ve done thiscountless times in the past with no problems):
I connect the Z1U to the OWC drive with a 4-pin to 6-pinstandard FW 400 cable. I do thisbecause the Mac Pro does not have any FW 400 inputs but the OWC drivedoes. So I am in effect“daisy-chaining” and perhaps this is the problem.
I turn on the camera.
I start up FCP. It tells me: “Unable tolocate the following external devices: HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i.” After hitting “check again” a fewtimes, I hit “continue.”
I load my new project, into which I want to bring all thiswonderful HDV footage of my friends’ wedding. And, as I have done so many times, I hit command-8 to bringup the log and capture window.
To my horror, it says, “Unable to initialize capturedevice. Device is not connected orthe capture preset is not setup [sic] correctly.” Etc., etc.
I have read many posts here and elsewhere on similarproblems, so let me say what I have done:
I check Easy Setup: It says HDV – 1080i60, which is what it should say.
My Audio/Video Settings are:
Sequence Preset: HDV 1080i60
Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV Firewire
Video Playback: None
Audio Playback: Default
So now I go to my camera. It is set to output HDV. Component says 1080i/480i. i.LINK Convert is off. Down Convert says Squeeze, but I assume that’s meaningless since thei.LINK Convert is set to off. A/V>DV Out is set to off.
None of this makes a lick of difference, as far as I cantell.
I shut off the camera and disconnect the cable, thenreconnect the cable and turn it back on. No help.
I trash my FCP preferences, start FCP again, redo myprefs. Nothing.
I hit the reset button on the Z1U. Nada.
I do all this and then reboot the computer. Bupkis.
The footage was definitely shot in HDV. I can play it fine on the camerascreen.
I check the cable, which is brand new; it is firmly in placeon both ends.
Okay, so now I turned off the camera, quit FCP, ejected theOWC drive and turned it off. Iunplugged the eSATA cable. I wentand got my MacBook Pro and connected it to the OWC drive with a FW 800 cable. The camera was still connected to theOWC media drive via the i.LINK cable. I turned on the drive; I turned on the MacBook Pro; I turned on theZ1U. I started up FCP, and here’swhat happened:
It worked perfectly. No problem recognizing the camera, noproblem controlling it from the L&C window.
You might say that this solves my problem. But I prefer to edit on my desktopcomputer, and I am irritated that I can’t figure out what’s wrong. My suspicions are that it must havesomething to do with the cabling. FCP is working just fine with the Z1U routed through my media drive, theOWC. The only differences are thatmy drive is not connected to the computer via eSATA but FW 800. I see no differences in the settings.
Any insights?

GirautFrom what you say, I would suggest that the OWC enclosure does not utilize/energize the firewire interface when it is using the eSata.
This is just a guess.
Connect the Drive/Camera to your desktop via the FW800 cable: Mac Pro > FW800 Cable > OWC enclosure >FW 6Pin to 4 Pin Cable > HDV Camera. The speed difference between eSata and FW should be minimal as in each case you are limited by the FW400 connection at the camera.

FCP does not save captured clips
During Log and Capture, everything works fine. I can control the camera and the preview shows as it captures. However once I press esc to stop the "capture now" nothing happens. Normally the clip should appear in the browser window in my bin, but nothing happens. The clip is not even on my computer because I checked my capture scratch folder as well. After pressing esc i also get an error message "General Error: An unknown capture error occurred."

Disconnect all devices from the computer except the camera, keyboard and mouse. Make sure the camera is turned on, correctly configured for HDV output with iLink off. Launch the application and set the correct HDV setting that matches your media? What is that? Is the camera recognized? If no, check system profiler. If yes, open log and capture. What do you do next and what happens when you do it?
tried that and still doesn't work. im using HDV 1080i the sony preset. The preview shows during Capture Now but when i press esc, nothing happens and the clip is not saved. -
DSR11 Not Recognised. FCP Crashes When Log & Capture Selected.
I've recently had a quite traumatic period installing QT7 Pro to work with iDVD disk burning. During that period, FCP3 worked faultlessly. Succeeded at last with disk burning then shut down for the night. Next day went into FCP and found that my DSR11 was not being seen by it. Chose 'Continue' and tried to set things up through 'Easy Setup' in the usual way. Couldn't be done. Selected Log and Capture as a 'try' and FCP crashed, leaving me with the Desktop screen. Despite numerous attempts to create a connection with the DSR11, I always am getting the box telling me it cannot be found and giving the choice to try again or select 'Continue.'
I'm wondering if the QT settings were in some way corrupted as I shut down the computer.... I'd like some help in getting back the settings.
I downloaded the QT7 upgrade which afforded the correct running of FCP and iDVD disk burning but now I can't find any record of the prog and its key in order to re-install it. I looked in HD/Library/Receipts and could only find references to Flip4Mac and QT Packages - no QT references with numbers following. Since inplutting this post I've found that the last mentioned QT package is 7.2 so I tried reinstalling it but after going through the procedure it ends with a message that there were errors in the installation and that I should try reinstalling it again.... Well, after four attempts with the same result, I'm here, and on tenterhooks!
As an aftermention..... I also have used the DSR11 with my MacPro to successfully operate FCP in its normal way.

Message was edited by: RonOn the Apple website it specifically states that QT7.2 with OSX.4.10 (actually any system of 10.3.9 and above) is the best way forward for the most efficient result from my computer. In view of that, I've recently used their Feedback page to pass the information to them. Yes, I know it states that one can only use it for feedback and they will not entertain other than that but we should have the abililty to put back to them the sort of quandary I'm in over their OS and allegedly compliant prog - ie QT7.2.
I've now taken the bull by the horns, because there's no other way I'm going to get satisfaction with Apple's software which should be capable as stated, and I'm about to re-install QT7 then try once again. That's despite not finding those additional Receipt files for scrapping prior to the install.
I'll report back the result when finished and tested. If it again fails, Apple will get an official complaint regarding their software that fails after being bought when their advertising says it improves rather than fails.
