FCP 6.02 and Canon HD camcorders

Can someone explain to me how FCP works with a Canon XHA -1 and how to properly set up a capture sequence?
By the way, while trying to do a test capture, I am not hearing the audio on my computer. I see the green VUs in the capture window showing a signal, but the main VUs of the program appear dead. I have gone through the audio-video settings several times.

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

anyone know how to solve this problem?  thanks alot

Download and install the latest version of the E-1 plugin from Canon’s website here:

If this didn't work, follow this creativecow post to modify cameras.plist file; if there's still no go, follow this guide to either modify the .plist file or convert your footage to Apple ProRes, the native editing format of Final Cut Pro.
    Hope this helps

  • Final Cut Pro and Canon 5D Mark II

    Hi,
I have been shooting on the Canon 5D for a few months now. My problem is when i have to edit the footage. I have tried converting to Apple ProRes using compressor, fcp, mpeg stream and i find a lot of jitters if the moving shots - i have been using Twixtor to convert my footage and this seams to take forever - close to 1 hour for 60 Seconds of footage.
I have been some footage on the net it seams to be pretty clean - how do i speed up my process.

    The Popper wrote:

Mmm, not quite. You had me up until the "feature film" quality bit...
Sure, these cameras shoot really nice footage. No question. However, the people that are executing the best results are those that are well aware of the limitations of these cameras and are doing what's necessary to cope with these issues, while on set. There are certainly things to be aware of with the DSLR footage: moiring, aliasing, rolling shutter and general image softening. come to mind. There can also be artifacts from the H.264 compression that often comes to light once you start trying to grade the footage beyond the most modest amount.
If these cameras cost $15,000 then no one would be talking about how amazing they are. Part of the fashion of shooting with these DSLR's right now is cost: they're cheap to buy/rent/use. But "feature film" quality? Sorry, not in my book. Unless you consider movies like "The Blair Witch Project" and "Paranormal Activity" to be feature quality. (Both of these, and I'm sure other 'low budget' films, were shot on small/cheap camcorders.)
Maybe I'm one of the few folks that puts a premium on image fidelity while most other folks are embracing the concept of "good enough".
    Just my 2¢ here...

  • FCP unable to Capture Canon GL2

    Hello -
My system is noted below. Final Cut Pro is updated to 6.0.4.
I am unable to capture the video using Canon's GL2 using the current version of FCP. I believe that I have everything configured correctly because I am able to capture audio and video using my father's JVC GR-DV800U video camera. Actually that particular JVC camera seems to work quite well with FCP. But not Canon's GL2. I am able to control camera's Rewind, Fast Forward, Play, etc. So I know that some communication is taking place. However, no picture is present within FCP; no capture either. Instead, I get that dreaded beach ball wheel.
I believe the FCP settings are correct: Under "Audio/Video" settings, the audio is set to MOTU's 424 (for the 2408 MK3); the DV Capture Preset (and the Sequence) is set to "DV NTSC 48 khz"; Video Playback is set for"Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main" with the audio playback set (again) to MOTU's 424 card.
I am attempting to capture the video to an external hard disk drive using the Mac Pro's firewire port located in the back of the computer. Again, this all works using my father's JVC video recorder.
*Given the computer setting and operating system, is this a known issue between the FCP and the GL2??* My GL2 is an older video camera. I purchased it quite a few years ago. *It seems like the GL2 may be the culprit. Yes? No?*
I'm very new to FCP. My background is with SONY's Vegas program (currently I'm up to version 8). Been using the Vegas program for years. My Dell Workstation, unfortunately, is old; it definitely is showing signs of aging. So, to make a long story short, I've decided to invest time and money in a Mac Pro (I use it primarily for music sequencing using the Logic Pro program which I love!) Now I want to learn how to use the FCP which I purchased several months ago. Not being able to have FCP communicate with the GL2 is a minor significance for me, though. I'm in no financial place to purchase a new camera at this time. Luckily, I usually record the video using Focus Enhancement's FS4-Pro with the GL2. So I am not totally dependent on having FCP and the GL2 work together. *Thankfully, the FS4-Pro DOES works well with FCP!!* Too bad I didn't use the FS4-Pro today. Wish I did. UGH
Could there be a work around in getting the GL2 to communicate properly with FCP??
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful insights and suggestions.
    Regards,
    Ted Fiebke

Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
    • You should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
    • Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method.
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct ... the most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The (now discontinued) Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. If you are working with HDV, you may have other issues ...
Beyond that, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 43) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    • shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    • connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    • start the camera then the computer
    • capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    • shut down the camera and computer
    • disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    • start hard drive(s) and computer
    • move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    • edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    • copy the file back to the internal drive
    • shut everything down
    • disconnect the external drive(s)
    • connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    • start the camera then the computer
    • play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.

  • FCP 7.0.3 Canon GL2 Operation could not be completed...no video

    Having a problem with FCP version 7.0.3, on a MacPro1,1 (2007 2x dual-core Xeon 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM) running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Canon DM GL2 connected via Firewire.
These used to work together in the past, but not now.
What's changed: ran out of space on original HDD, installed fresh OS X 10.6.8 on larger HDD then used Migration Assistant to migrate user account and settings and applications including FCP7 and rest of the Final Cut Suite 3.0. FC suite then was uninstalled and re-installed. Still have the original HDD and same problem exists on it as well as on the new install. Same problem also exists when switching to a newly created user account that had never used FCP.
Have used the recommended setting of "DV-NTSC Firewire Basic" for this Canon DM GL2 camera (from Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 Supported Cameras web page)
When I select "Log and Capture" from the File menu, the new windows open, the color bars show in the preview area but "preview disabled" shows in a black bar across the color bars. I see [VTR OK] below the buttons that control the tape movement, click the Play button, the LCD screen on the camera starts to show the tape playback for about 5 seconds, the place where the video SHOULD show up just has Final Cut Pro and an Apple logo and "Waiting for Timecode" in the silver area benath the black region, and the spinning beachball is rotating for a few seconds before the error message appears: "This operation could not be completed as there is no video. [OK]".
Several weeks ago, this used to work on the old HDD, but since then the new OS was installed on a larger HDD and this problem has surfaaced. Problem also exists on the OLD HDD at this time as well.
How can this issue best be resolved? Any suggestions will be greatly applreciated

I have three GL-2s and see this issue from time-to-time...  the good news is it's probably not your system or the hard drive; I had it on my G5 dualie (Tiger) and I have it on my 8x 3.2GHz Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) and it also occurs when I use a JVC deck, so it's probably not the camera either.
Over time, my work-around has distilled down to repairing permissions (just in case...) and removing and re-plugging the firewire connection. This seems to "jump start" the connection and gets things rolling again. I have no solid technical explanation but it's similar to what we've always done to re-establish a firewire connection if the device has been dismounted. I expect that it's rooted in the hot-pluggable attribute of firewire.
    Hope this helps

  • Final Cut Pro footage and Canon 5D import

I am able to drag footage from Canon 5 D Mark 111 media card directly into Final Cut 7.  Previously I remember compressing footage, why does one compress footage, the total media is 8 GB.
    Thanks
    Catherine

FCP doesn't work well with the native files that camera shoots. Unfortunately is APPEARS like it will, but it won't. Yeah, it'll import fine, and you might begin editing fine, but things will pop up, like a sluggish system, loss of sync while editing, loss of sync when trying to export.
Do not cut the native H.264 MOV files the camera shoots with. FCP demands FCP editing codecs, and the one you want is ProRes 422. You'll need to use COMPRESSOR for this, as Log and Transfer doesn't support the 5D Mark III.  Now, the bad news is that that 8GB of footage will become about 32-40GB...because the format you are converting to has a higher data rate.  This is unavoidable, if you plan on using FCP 7.  Premiere Pro will cut this format natively...and FCX can, but FCX does still want to "optimize" the media, and by that it means convert to ProREs.
Gotta convert to ProRes 422 before you import the footage.

  • Has anyone used canon AVCHD camcorders with cs4?

Im considering getting a Canon HF10 camcorder, and want to know if anyones run into any problems editing with this, or any canon AVCHD camcorders. I hope it works well, because my only other options are ulead and pinnacle (and of course avid, sigh) and those options are pretty bleak.

I have the HF11 and love it...however editing is painful ( and I have a quad core Q9650 w 8GB). I also have a Canon HDV HV30 and like it also, they each have their pro's can con's, but for the ability to just pick it up and go it is hard to beat. Until Adobe can support the higher bit rates (i.e. above 17MB/sec) I am converting mine into cineform lossless codec(Please note they don't have a fully functional CS4 version yet, but it is supposed to be out soon).

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 7   - Comparison with Picasa and Canon Zoom Browser

I have recently bought a new computer and connected it to a USB hard drive which contained all my photos and a copy of an Adobe Photoshop Elements (APE) 4 catalog which permitted me to run APE 4 directly from the USB drive. The new computer runs on Windows 7 with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. When I attempted to open the old catalog, created in APE 4 APE 4, APE 7 needed to convert it. The converted catalog then needed to reconnect with files and this took hours because APE seems to be incapable of sorting this out automatically. On the other hand Picasa 3 dealt with the matter in minutes and Canon Zoom Browser dealt with it in seconds. Why is this? What are the advantages of using APE 7 over Picasa 3 or Canon Zoom Browser?

    John McQuade wrote:
I avoid keeping photos on the C Drive of my computer because of adverse past experiences of losing data when problems arose and it was necessary to reinstall Windows. I prefer to use two separate hard disc drives connected to my computer using  USB ports so that I have all photos and catalogs on each drive. PSE catalogs appear to be drive letter specific so that a catalog created on one drive will not function if simply copied to the other. In PSE-4 I overcame this problem by opening the copied catalog and changing all references to drive letters. In PSE-7 I am unable to open the database and my goal is to find a quick and efficient way of modifying a copied catalog so that it functions on a drive different to the one on which the catalog was created.
Finally, and at long last, a kindred spirit that won't keep photos on the OS drive. I was told as recently as >> yesterday << that my post about saving photos anyplace else but  "C:/" was "non-sequitur".
Second, I'm sort of accustomed to "USB drive", as a synonym for "flash drive", and "Ext HDD" referring to an external HDD, (this makes sense, at least in my twisted individual perception), so accordingly, I apologize for my knee-jerk lecture about it.  (In hindsight, perhaps the only child in me is expecting too much also).
I never use external HDDs, but rather install additional HDDs internally to accomplish the same net result. My sensibilities here are, they are quite a bit less expensive, they do the same job, and you don't have addional s*** laying all over the place.
IMO, you are overthinking the database issue. I get to say that since I have no such ability to do so, and additionally, I have never been unable to reconnect a catalog other than within the normal Windows environment.
Therefore, I suggest changing the drive letter(s) to that of the old drive(s), and remain in blisslful ignorance as to whether PSE-7 is using the SN# or Drive letter to do its "dirty work".
As Mr. Ellis has pointed out, you're trying to do too many things at once. I'm going to suggest an "experimental" fix which is sort of backwards from Mr. Ellis', but retains the same spirit.
Install PSE-4 on the NEW machine! Insert its catalog file into its (PSE-4) correct folder. This location can be found by "Help" > "System Info".
Upon installation, PSE-4 will generate a new catalog, "My Catalog", therefore you must change the old catalog's name, (say "My Catalog 2"), to avoid a conflict.
You might have to change the "compatibility" mode for PSE-4 several times, before PSE-7 will be able to follow the file path.
As an additional note, since PSE-7 is technically, (according to Adobe), "incompatible", you can match its compatibility mode with PSE-4's, at the onset. After you have stabilized the system, change PSE-7's mode back to whatever works best.
If you need any more info on these operations, please feel free to post back.
I would like to add, that my PSE-7 in Windows 7 runs poorly in comparision with the same program in the XP environment. This seems not to be "typical", but IMO, worth mentioning.
Please also bear in mind that you can paste the entire catalog file into the "Open Catalog" dialog box, and PSE will place in its folder for you...!
Then, assuming the HDD letters are the same, it will reconnect "instantly", or in the case of a PSE-4 ".psa" cat file, PSE-7 will convert it, then open it instantly.
As an afterthought, by changing the drive letters, then pasting the .psa file into the "Catalog Open" dialog box, you do not have to make any additional installations of PSE, nor muck about in any database.

  • Epson and Canon printers not working with 10.7.5

Anyone know if there is a fix for Epson and Canon printers for 10.7.5? Did Apple intentionally switch off printer drivers to force us to upgrade to Mountain Lion? I called Epson technical support and they mentioned it's a well-known issue and they said to "wait for an Apple update". I doubt that will fix the issue. My Canon printer stopped working for months already and there is still no fix.

  • Aperture, iPhoto, Mail, FCP X, Motion and Compressor suddenly kaput!

Yesterday I discovered that Aperture and iPhoto, which I hadn't used for several weeks, were refusing to open and throwing up an error message saying there was a "problem and they probably weren't compatible with this version of the  operating system etc."
Shortly after, I discovered that Mail and the latest versions of FCP X, Compressor and Motion were also disabled.
After searching the internet/forums it appeared that this problem (with Aperture) could be caused by installing FCE 4, which I had done a week earlier and the only cure was to reinstall the OS.
I deleted FCE 4 and went through all the usual troubleshooting strategies to no avail so I reinstalled OS X 10.8.5 which which took less than an hour and luckily appears to have cured the problem. (I had been dreading reinstalling the OS  as I mistakenly assumed it would wipe all the apps and folders off my Mac ......... but of course it didn't.)
So has anyone had a similar experience or can shed any light on this?
Now I have to decide whether I dare reinstall FCE 4 ...........

Quite a few bug fixes, like the text position bug in Lion has been fixed.
Here's some from Tim Payton on the COW
    - During Playback, zooming the timeline with the keyboard doesn't send you to the end of the timeline
    - Scale controls on timeline now update live
    - Synchronize Clips now works if you have multiple non overlapping video clips for a single audio clip. (huge!)
    - Preroll and Post Roll settings in preferences work.
    - HDV Footage with "better performance" doesn't look nearly as bad. Way less flashing.
    - Timeline feels much snappier.
    - Timeline index now includes sortable columns: name, roles, & notes, and you can edit the values! (huge!)
    - Zooming on the timeline now really centers on the playhead if skimming off, skimmer if skimming on
    - Inspector updates more consistently to the clip selected.
    - Startup is much faster.
