FCP 6 Access to XSERVE???

Man I may be just blowing wind... but even if someone could point me in the right direction that would be a great, great help...
We have a Dual G5 and a XSERVE both running Tiger and we are wondering how it may be possible to use media storage on the XSERVE over Gbit... I am relatively new to the Mac world, all of our other machines and servers are PC based.... I have gotten the XSERVE to mount the G5's drives but the G5 doesn't see the XSERVE... I am very confused about how to even set up the XSERVE... let alone make it accessible as storage for the possibility of adding other editing suites.
Essentially we want to extend our storage for FCP by being able to capture to / move media over to the XSERVE. At this point there would only be one user... but I am stuck without being able to even set up the XSERVE to do anything.
-Micah
RESPONSE:
This sounds like simple file sharing, as long as you're only intending the XServe for storage and not live capture/editing (the ethernet network is too slow for real-time capture).
Since it's a server the XServe is likely running Mac OS X Server (and I'm guessing the G5 is running Mac OS X Client). As a result, setting up sharing is not a one-click option, so that's probably what's hanging you up.
On Mac OS X Server, setting up sharing is two-part process.
First, you use Workgroup Manager to identify the directories on the server that you want to share. It's generally a bad idea to share entire disks, so you get to specify which directories should be shared.
You can also specify which protocol to share each directory through - for a single Mac I'd stick with AFP. If your Windows clients are going to share the space then enable SMB, and enable NFS for Linux/Unix clients.
Once you've configured your sharepoints, you use Server Admin to start up the respective services. If you followed my note above this will just mean starting the AFP service on the server (open Server Admin, connect to the server, select AFP and click the Start button).
That's it. Your client (G5) should now be able to connect to the server and access the sharepoint(s) you defined.

Yay! Thank you for that info. I did get it to work with AFP, I am sharing two entire disks so I better change that... It is likely that a windows machine will never have to talk to the server so that is good... also you are correct about the Client/Server software on the two respective machines. Having 1.2 tB more for storage is great!
But this further sparks a question of possibilities...
Allow me to add also that I am using a Blackmagic Decklink SP, capturing DigiBeta, BetaSP mostly through a Sony M2000 deck and this is a 3 GHz Dual Core G5 with 4 GB of RAM... ATI Radeon X1900 XT...
Which brings me to the point of capturing over the Gbit Ethernet... I have heard that it will work for DV but not 8bit or 10bit so I did some testing.
We are using a dedicated Gbit switch that is connecting the XSERVE to the G5, and also receiving some sort of internet from the server room...
Both network settings in the server and client are set manually to 1000baseT with jumbo mode... and I have abort capture on dropped frames on in FCP. It works? It works... why does it work?
One setting to capture via 8bit-Uncompressed SDI to then compresses to DV keeps stopping after a gig or so although the capture still reaches the end of the tape... But as soon as I left the 8bit UC settings alone it worked, over ethernet to the server drive, and also at 10bit. I run black magic's disk speed test on the mounted volumes and get some crazy results...
Disk read data rate of 107.5 MB/s
Disk write data rate of 77.7 MB/s
What does this mean. Perhaps I should post this in the FCP Video forums...

  • Windows Explorer access to Xserver G5 Directories / Files

In the office there is a XServer G5 machine. I have a Windows XP PC. Using Windows Explorer, I need to have access to XServer Directories / Files. The internet explorer, email and connection to other non-apple computers work fine.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Bill,
I’d like to thank you for your time.
My computer was purchased a couple of weeks ago, when I started to work here. The software was preloaded by Dell. I do not have to logon when the pc boots up. My computer does not see the XServe at all. A connection to another computer, Unix based, works fine through putty, or telnet.
Email, network printer and Internet services work fine.
    Below, I answer your questions.
Is the problem computer able to see the XServe at all or can it see the server and just not access the folders and files? (NO, my computer does not see the XServe at all.)
Since you're a small organization, do your Windows computers require logins? (In one of the Windows computers that “sees” the XServe’s directories and files, the user has to login in. The other Windows computer that also “sees” the XServe’s directories and files, does not require a logon, when the machine boots up. I don't have to logon to anything when my pc boots up.)
If not, then I would suspect that the account automatically logging in on the problem Windows machine does not have access to the files and folders on the server. Add this user account to the correct security group on the server and that will probably solve your problem. (I agree with what you suggest, however, I don’t know the administrator account/password on the XServe machine to add the user account. Nobody else knows anything about that machine except the consultant who set it up and disappeared.)
I have an understanding about what has to be done, and I’d like to ask you something. Is there any default system or administrator account where I could login to XServe and do the addition? “For example with the Oracle DBMS there are several default accounts/passwords supplied by the vendor, so that authorized persons can use them to do certain things.” What about Apple?
By the way, the XServe is in a small air conditioned closet-room, where there is not even a tiny console or other display connected to the server. I guess that in the past whenever, whoever did something either brought in a laptop, or connected to the server from an existing computer, or from a remote location.
At this point, I like to THANK you again very much for your concern, patience and support.
    Sincerely
    Stefanos

  • Can FCP access Soundtracks sound effects

Hey all, I've been using FCP for some time now, not a pro by any means though. And I'd never ventured into soundtrack pro until a friend taught me a few things. He said included with Soundtrack were some generic sound effect files. I tried looking but came up empty handed. Does anyone know if this is correct and, if so, how to access them for use in FCP? thanks all!

Sure, there are both music loops and sound effects files included in STP. You can find them in the Search tab in STP:
Find a sound you want to use, right-click, and choose Reveal in Finder, then you can drag 'n drop from there.

  • Remote access for Xserve G4 shared folders

I have an Xserve G4 OS 10.2.1 at my office and I want to configure it so I can tap into our shared file folder from somewhere away from the office. How do I do this? Do I need additional software? Can it be done at all? If so, is it more prone to being hacked into?

There are two ways of doing it. Insecurely and securely.
Insecure - setup port forwarding to allow port 548 through your router to the server. Now you can use the Finder on a remote machine to mount AFP shares on the server.
It's simple, but horribly insecure - anyone can hit the server, the link isn't encrypted and it just isn't the right approach.
Secure - setup a VPN and use the VPN client on the remote machine to connect to the office network. Now the remote machine is, essentially, part of the office network and can do almost anything that a machine in the office can do, including access file shares, print, etc.
It takes a little more setup, both on the server and the router, but it is far more secure since everything is encrypted, and it gives full access to the office network.
Check the Server documentation on setting up the VPN - it's little more than a few checkboxes in Server Admin, but you'll need to verify the router configuration, too.

  • Need advice on fast remote access to Xserve

Does anyone know of a product for Xserve that is similar to Terminal Services?
We have people in other states that need to log in remotely and prefer not to use a VPN. Thanks

There is no direct equivalent to Terminal Services, at least as far as having multiple remote users run multiple graphical environments on the server. The Mac OS supports a single graphical environment, so even though it's possiblet to have multiple users looking (graphically) at the server, they'll all see the same thing, which is hardly conducive to them all working on separate projects.
That said, there are some options, but the viability depends on quite what you're trying to do with the server, what apps you're trying to run, and what problems you're trying to solve.
Either way, this doesn't absolve you from needing a VPN system. That's needed to secure the connection over the internet. This applies to Terminal Services just as much as to any other protocol.

  • I can't start DHCP Service or access Xserve share points from pc's

This weekend we had a power outage and I had to repropogate permissions on all share points so that certain macs could read and write.
The Xserve restarted like it should but is there something I need to set to keep permissions after a power outage?
I have the server set up as a standalone server and it's the only one on the network. And I have permissions set so that everyone has read/write permissions.
I'm using a cable modem to a Linksys router to multiple switches.

  • Running FCP 5.04 on Xserve G5

Has anyone been successful at running FCP on an xserve G5? And if so what graphics card did you use since FCP requires Quartz Extreme and an AGP card. Thank you.

Are you trashing all the prefs?
In the User Library you have a preferences folder. In that is a file called com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
Then towards the bottom is a folder called Final Cut Pro User Data.
    In there are three files:
    Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
    Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
    Final Cut Pro Prof Cache
Trash these as well and see what happens.
Don't delete the other folders in this folder though. (Custom Settings, Plugins, and Window Layouts)

  • Moved XServe -- Can't access  Yikes!

I had a small business and had the Xserve on a fixed IP. I shut down the business and stored the Xserve for several months. Now I want to access the server. I have Apple Remote Desktop which I used to access the Xserve without a video card/monitor. I hooked it into a switch and cannot access it from my laptop as I had before. I am a novice on the Xserve. Is the fact that the Xserve was set to a specific fixed IP now being recognized by my Remote Desktop? I have tried many things without luck. I'm not sure what version on OSX its running...its about a year old or so. Can someone please help me get it back and running again. It's a shame to see it just sitting there. Thank you for responding.

    Thank you!
I thought it was a special video card needed, and had it headless using Apple Remote Desktop. Several times in the past I've tried to access it with no luck. It sat for months. You suggested:
My suggestion would be to find a video card for the
thing, hook up a monitor and keyboard and start all
over again with the OSX Server install disks.
Still thinking it was a special video card, I googled and went to an article, "Poor Man's Video Substitute" on AFP548.com. It suggested using a video card from a PowerMac G4, which I have, and used and was able to access the Xserve and clean it up so I can Ebay it. And it was only used for a month or so. Thanks for the lead.

  • Accessing Xserve with Lion Server from Windows 7 PC via VNC Viewer

    Hello everyone-
At work we have an Xserve running Lion Server that we are trying to access from a Windows PC runnig Windows 7. We have turned on Screen Sharing on the Xserve and we are using RealVNC's VNC Viewer client to access the Xserve.
Everything works OK except the Control key is not being passed through to the Xserve, so you can't to teh usual copy/paste commands etc.
I have checked on the Web but found nothing to resolve this problem. The settings in the RealVNC client are set to pass through special keys, but it is as if the VNC server on the Xserve isn't seeing them.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Accessing XServe shows empty folders until I restart my machine

I access an XServe in the company I work for but will continually see empty folders on the server. But, if I restart my computer and re-connect, I can then see the data in the folders (same login creds). This will happen without warning in the middle of the day. Not logging out, etc...
This is from a MacPro 10.5.2, XServe 10.4.11 I believe.
No one else that I'm aware of has this issue.
Thank you for any help regarding this.

What protocol do you use to connect to the XServe (NFS, SMB, AFP)?
Also, if you open a Terminal window and "cd" to a folder on the XServe, and type "ls", can you see the contents of that directory?

  • Clarification on how to use Xserve Raid and Fibre Channel without xsan.

First let me apologize for not responding earlier to your response, I tend to get busy and then forget to check back here.
Tod, the answer to your question is No, only one computer is accessing the xserve raid files at any one time and that is via Fibre Channel. However I do have the xserve raids set up as share points via ethernet.
Maybe I should turn that off and only access the files with the one computer that can connect via fibre channel.
I never thought of that. I will try that while I await for your answer, thanks again.

    I have the following setup:
Xserve: 2x2Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 5Gb of Ram, Running 10.5.8 Leopard Server
Xserve Raid with firmware version 1.5.1/1.51c on both controllers, and
    Qlogic Sanbox 5600
Apple Fibre Channel Cards in Xserve, and Mac Pro Tower; Apple 2 Port 4Gbs Fibre Channel Card
Mac Pro Tower-Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.8Ghz, 16Gb of Ram, Running Snow Leopard 10.6.4
    Here is the problem.
The directory for the xserve raids keep getting corrup, and I use disc warrior to rebuild them. Is there a way to keep the directories from getting corrupt? I am a few pieces of equipment before I can build an Xsan as that is the ultimate goal, but until then, I just need to be able to have the raids funciton as storage without having to rebuild the directories all of the time.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

Are multiple computers accessing the same data on the RAID at the same time?
If so then NO. This is the source of your data corruption and I'm surprised if you were able to get all your data back every time if this is how you've been running your system. Each fibre channel assumes it has full and sole control of every volume it has mounted, no data arbitration is practiced and data corruption will occur if this assumption is wrong.
The only way this set-up will work is to use partitions or LUN masks so the volumes are accessed by one computer at any time. As long as one computer relinquishes control before another mounts it you will dodge arbitration issues but this is a dangerous game. If you screw up and mount an already mounted volume - and there is no easy way to tell if a volume is mounted - corruption will then occur. Sharing data simultaneous at fibre speeds is what XSAN does and to do this you need it.

Intel Xserve, G5 XServes, XRAID, Promise

+The xserve raids will mount automatically to any computer that I connect the qlogic fc switch to+
This is source of the corruption to your data. Any computer that attaches to a drive/partition via fibre channel assumes that it alone is in control of the drive and data corruption is inevitable.
+Is that the issue, should I disconnect the xserve from the fc switch and leave it connected via ethernet?+
Short answer: YES. The ethernet connections are fine because the server is controlling the file arbitration through the sharing protocol. Fibre channel connections assumes complete control over the partition and no arbitration of the file access is performed. It's like two people independently driving trying to drive the same car to different locations.
Depending on your set-up it is possible for the two machines to see and use different parts of the Xserve RAID storage but they cannot access the same areas without SAN doing the arbitration.
    Hope that's clear,

  • AWT, linux and xserver

    hello
i have a servlet which manipulate gif images
it works on my local machine (WinXP)
but when i try to run it on a linux server mandrake (with apache)
    it fails.
knowing that in the first execution i have the following error
"Can`t connect to X11 window server using `:0.0` as the value of the DISPLAY variable."
And after i always still have the following error:
    "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/awt/motif/MToolkit
    at org.apache.jserv.JServConnection.processRequest(JServConnection.java:
    320)
    at org.apache.jserv.JServConnection.run(JServConnection.java:188)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:475)"
i think that this problem occurs in my servlet when executing this instruction:
    Image awtImage = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage (...)
the Xserver is already activated on my linux server
the enviroment variable DISPLAY has the value:
    DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
    (notice i try DISPLAY=:0.0 and DISPLAY=131.107.0.40:0.0 and DISPLAY=:0
but i have also exactly the same errors)
i had execute "xhost +localhost" to allow my machine(which is the linux server)
    to access the Xserver
knowing that i run my servlet on the same machine
    do you have any idea?
    thanks

Does your linux server have a monitor attached to it? I have run into numerous problems with Solaris machines running "off the shelf" graphics software (JClass ServerChart, NetBeans NetCharts, etc) where headless machines (i.e. no monitor) will not render the graphics. What you need is the xvfb application (X Virtual Frame Buffer). (A nice beefy 80MB download....) I apologize, I don't have the URL on where you can get it, try google. Essentially what happens is there is no where for the machine to push windows for rendering, even if you have an XServer running. xvfb acts as a virtual monitor (frame buffer). What you are experiencing sounds very similar. If you do have a monitor attached to it, completely disregard this and disavow all knowledge of my existence.... :-)

  • XServes won't sleep

I have a home office network comprised of:
    Time Capsule
27" iMac with dual cores running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and
2 XServes each with 2 quad cores running Max OS X Server 10.6.8
    All networking by ethernet
I access the XServes through Finder -> Share Screen. This works fine.
I use the XServes to run parallel calculations for about 5 minutes a day. As the machines run hot and loud as well as use a considerable amount of power, I want them to "Sleep" when I don't need to actually run the calculations.
Even better to fall asleep on their own!
So, I went into the XServer's << System Preferences >> opened << Energy Saver >> and configured the settings as you can see below:
The XServes should fall asleep after approx. 5 minutes of inactivity. They don't.
Not even when I have the "Share Screen" window closed.
Note, I need "Wake for Ethernet network access" checked because I want to use "Wake On Lan" capability to wake the XServes from a remote computer, but that makes another issue I'll ask about later.
I can put the XServes to sleep manually from the "Share Screen" window, but having to do that just seems silly.
Any ideas of what I need to do get them to fall asleep?

There are numerous issues that might prevent a server from sleeping (especially since servers are not expected to sleep...). Likely candidates are backgound applications/processes that refuse to sleep, and certain PCI cards whose drivers prevent sleeping.
The system.log would be the first place I'd look. The OS is pretty good about reporting such issues.

  • Best way to give access to Library folder, etc.

    Hello.
I have someone in our studio who needs to access various directories within the root Library folder (mainly for dealing with web/wiki file editing) — what's the best way to give them access to the server for this (assuming they'll be accessing the xserve from another machine on the LAN and not directly logging in on the Xserve itself as it's in a secure room in a rack)?
I tried using File Sharing and creating aliases or symbolic links to the requires locations, but that didn't seem to work.
FYI, all users are set up via an OD Master (if that helps)?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

    Hi Kristin,
What you are describing is a developer having access to files on the server that a running service is using. A common developer situation: modifying and editing files on a remote machine but not in use by the service. The service needs to be restarted to put the modifications into service.
A setup I'm familiar with is more tolerant of the interaction and provides backup in case things go awry. A repository on the server (subversion or git) is setup to accept versions of the file directories used by a service. Then the latest version is checked out to the service directory. The service is stopped and restarted to load this latest version. If things are not working correctly, then a rollback can be performed to restore service to the previous running version. The developer is provided an ssh connection on the lan to keep secure file transfers to and from the repository.
Using a tool such as Capistrano provides the automated mechanism to restart service and load any configuration data that may be required. Rollback is just as simple.
This approach means the service is up as much as possible. Development and testing is accomplished on a remote machine, not the server. Version control is maintained and a backup of known tested files is available for rollback. Lastly, the control of bringing online a new file or capability is allowed in a controlled manner. Security of access to files is limited to those allowed an ssh connection to the repository.
With subversion preloaded on OS 10.5 Server and git easy to install it is a straightforward solution.
    HTH,
    Harry

  • XServe 10.4.7 + Remote Desktop 2.2

I am trying to remote to the xserve using an Imac with remote desktop 2.2. I am able to use the control feature from the Remote desktop program, to get on the server, however it asks for permissions to log on. When I shut down the server, I have go to the server and log on to get control or access the Xserve, through Remote Desktop program.
Any suggestions of what I need to check so I can log in and shut down the server from another machine, using the Remote Desktop program?
    xserve   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How did you acquire the 10.4.7 update, Edgar? Did you use Software Update or download from the Apple website yourself?
I put 10.4.7 on a 17" 2.1GHz MacBookPro a couple of days ago and that was fine. You might think about downloading (again, I know, tedious) the combo update for the Intel equipped Macs and installing that.
Of course, I presume that the machine was in A1 order before you installed; and that after the reinstall up to 10.4.6 that you have checked the disk and installation?
