FCP 6 and Sony HVR-V1U 24p; can't remove 3:2 pulldown or convert to 24 fps

Hi, all, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I recently purchased a Sony HVR-V1U HD camera that has a native 24p setting (using 60i with 3:2 pulldown to store on miniDV tape).
I have just started experimenting with pulling footage off this camera into Final Cut Pro (6.0.3), and am having some problems getting things to work using log-and-capture. Specifically, it seems I can either choose the ProRes 422 setting and effectively use a "capture now" capturing method--which gets me native 24 (or 23.98 if 24pa is used) frames per second--or I can use the 60i setup--which gets me the standard log-and-capture window where I can actually log my clips, but brings them in at 29.97 fps.
I would make due with the 60i setting since that allows me to batch capture clips I want from my footage... however, I am not able to alter the frame rate or remove the 3:2 pulldown using cinema tools (I get a "unable to find clips with 29.97 fps" error, when the properties clearly list the clips as having 29.97 fps).
Can anyone help here? I'm quite accustomed to using the log and capture window so the "capture now" method seems very inconvenient; but if I can't get the clips transcoded to 24fps somehow I'm not sure what else I can do.
Thanks in advance!
John

Capturing HDV uses a somewhat different workflow than regular DV and other I Frame formats (if that is what you have been used to so far).

Does FCP support this new camera?
What about older versions like Final Cut Studio?

Depending on the quality of the product to be delivered to the customer, I've found that shooting in HDV, editing in ProRes 422, then using Compressor to downconvert to MPEG2 for DVD with frame controls on (resize = better) produced MUCH better looking video than starting with DV; fewer moire patterns, less mosquito noise. less primary color banding on diagonal edges, etc.
As for low light, the Z5/Z7 are supposed to have improved the situation with larger sensors, new in camera processing, etc. I don't have one, so I can't address that directly, but I suspect there are expert reviews around somewhere. Once should also consider the Canon XH-A1 series. It has been well reviewed and performs better in low light than the Sony V1U according to those reviews.
But if you iintend to use the camera professionally (I don't), you should go to a pro store with a tape (or memory card as the case may be) in hand and shoot some footage; shoot into some dark corners, view "busy" scenes (chain link fence, anyone?), difficult autofocus situations (for example, with the V1U, where the focus point is NOT in the center: watch is search about for focus), etc.
Then take the tape, etc. and get it ingested to FCP and look at it carefully. A camera is your biggest pro tool, and you should get one that suits your needs and expectations. It is worth the time to test it out and not just rely on reviews here or elsewhere, though they are good starting points for what to look out for.

  • Sony "HVR-V1U" 24p editing

i am thinking of getting the new sony 24p camera and want to know about FCP settings. i understand there is an HDV setting and a 24p setting. Which will i use? I want to use 24p for the look only. i will not edit in a 24p timeline or export to DVD 24 or film.
    thanks, jim

I have shot with the XL H1 at 24F and 60i. I can tell you I get a better image with 60i. You lose 20% of your quality when you go 24F, because it isn't really shooting progressive, but a FAKE (must be what the F stands for) progressive...losing lines of resolution to make the video full frames and not interlaced fields.
BUT...that being said, the footage still looked VERY nice, and not overly stuttery (don't set your shutter too high or it will). But, I also had issues with the camera in post. Final Cut Pro would not see it. The computer did, it was in the System Profiler. But FCP wouldn't see the deck, not matter what HDV setting I chose. I tried it on my laptop, and FCP saw it, controlled the camera, but wouldn't import the footage. iMovie HD saw it...but what is the point of that? No timecode.
I did eventually end up capturing with my Kona LH as DVCPRO HD, which is what I would normally do, but I wanted to test HDV footage.
But the camera is $9000. And it is HDV. For $9000 I can get an HVX-200 camera and two P2 cards and shoot in a MUCH BETTER format, DVCPRO HD.
    No experience with the Sony...

  • No video when trying to capture PAL dv tape w/Sony HVR-V1U camera

    Hello there,
Im attempting to Log & Capture a DV tape with "DV SP PAL" content from a Sony HVR-V1U camera using an iLink FireWire.
I have deck control, timecode, and audio but no video. Instead I see bars for video w/the ominous "preview disabled" band. When I attempt "Capture Now," I receive the follwoing message "this operation could not be completed as there is no video." For Easy Setup, Im currently in "Format: PAL; Use: DV-PAL FireWire Basic" (ive other combinations, and again best I can get is deck control but no video).
The DV PAL tape plays fine in the camera's LCD screen. Also I had no issue capturing HDV NTSC tapes using the same Sony HVR-V1U camera.
I've checked my settings and the usual obvious stuff but no luck.
If anyone has any ideas on what Im doing wrong or things I could try it would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Sam

are you sure this camera is fully pal compatible?  Some cameras/decks will play back certain formats but will not output via firewire.  Can you shoot PAL with this camera?  If not, I'd guess you can't use it to capture PAL via firewire.  Might check the camera manual.

  • Canon 30i footage not being read by sony HVR V1U

    Hello out there,
So I have a whack of tapes to import, shot using the Canon XLH1- I'm not sure if they were recorded at 30F or 60i
However, I can't seem to find the correct 'tape format' on the HVR V1U to play them back.
    Anyone run into this problem?
I wanted to bring in the footage using the Sony but I can't even play back the tapes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much,
    Deedee

I believe the incompatibility between Canon and Sony may be a tracking issue and here's why. A couple of weeks ago I was able to capture HDV footage shot on a client's XL-H1, using my Sony HVR V1U. Last year that same client had unsuccessfully tried to capture using an HVR-M10U VTR. We wound up using the H1 to capture. Later in the year I borrowed his H1 to shoot some pickups in Standard Definition DV. When I tried to playback on my DSR-1500 there were picture and sound errors. The same tape played in a DSR-11 exhibited even more errors. I was able to playback and capture from on the H1 with no problems. I suggested that he send the H1 back to Canon for warranty repair. He did and the problem was in either the tape or head drum speed, I can't remember which. It seems quite reasonable that other H1's may exhibit the same recording issue. I suggest you try to record in DV and see if the V1U or some other DV deck will play it back.

I have an old app in my updates but no longer have the app on iTunes and iPhone 4s. How can i remove it? It is beyond annoying, as it constantly has the badge noticfication but can't update the app as it is no longer avaliable. Help!!!

Unfortunately the app isn't avaliable in the Australian store only avaliable to download in the UK store, very confussing as it is definitely not in my iTunes or on my iPhone. I don't understand how or why it managed to get to updates. I just want to delete it or at least get rid of the notification badge for it.

  • FCP 6.0.5 and Sony HVR-M15U - DV Connection Issue

My head is hurting at the moment. I cannot get my Sony DV deck to be seen in FCP 6.0.5. I can see the deck as HDV. For DV mode, you have to turn on the iLink conversion. I have set the deck to iLink Set - DV SP. BUT... Final Cut Pro does not see the deck at all.
    Here's the specs:
Mac Pro (Late 2007) Quad Pro 3.0
8 gig of matching paired RAM
FCS 2.0 with all of the latest updates.
    MacOS 10.5.6
AJA Kona 3 driver version 6.03
AJA Io driver version 2.01 - disconnected unless needed for capture from older tape decks
    ATI Radeon XT1900 (512 RAM)
ATTO Celerity FC-42ES fiber channel card
    Quicktime 7.6
Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS3 (with all updates applied)
I have checked Apple's tech site and forums, nothing other than removing the old Quicktime receipts and reinstalling Quicktime. I tried this... Still nothing. I tried to use another deck, a Sony HVR-M10U. Nothing!
Before you say, its the firewire connection in the computer, HDV does work just fine. Its DV that doesn't work. I have used it just fine with Adobe Premier Pro CS3 (DV capture and Export to Tape). Apple's iMovie sees the deck just fine, too. I wish I had an HVR-1500 deck so that I could bypass this issue, but I don't have one.
What I ended up doing was exporting my sequences from FCP using Quicktime Conversion and setting it to DV Stream. Then I can import my video into Premier Pro CS3 and Export to Tape. Works perfectly.
If I go back into FCP and try this, I get an error message telling me the firewire connection is not found. My iLink lights on the front of the deck are also off. Its not showing any iLink connection on the deck. Now, when I open Premier Pro, the iLink light comes on for DVCAM.
    Makes you go, hummmmmm........
    HELP!

    >could not get PP CS5 to display the video
As far as I know (from reading only, I don't do HDV) PPro does not show the video during capture... this is not a bug
You should (again, reading only) be able to see the video in PPro while simply playing it on the camera and not actually capturing

  • Is FCP X compatible with a Sony HVR-V1U camcorder?

I used the camcorder compatibility query tool but did not see the HVR-V1U or V1N listed.

Thanks, Ben.  That is indeed the plan.  I was just fishing to see if anyone had actually captured from an HVR-V1U or N into FCPX.  Agree that it SHOULD . . . a Firewire connection from tape media is a standard thing.  But I never cease to be amazed at technical surprises.

"Capturing HDV Video to the Apple Intermediate Codec
Capturing HDV video is very similar to capturing DV video using the Capture Now feature. The main differences are:
The Log and Capture window is not used.
Capturing HDV video may not take place in real time because transcoding HDV frames into the Apple Intermediate Codec requires special processing steps.
To capture HDV footage to the Apple Intermediate Codec:
1 Click in the Browser to make it active, then choose File > New Bin.
2 Control-click the bin, then choose Set Logging Bin from the shortcut menu.
Your captured clips will be placed in this bin.
3 Name the bin, then press Enter.
4 Choose File > Log and Capture (or press Command-8).
A Capture dialog appears instead of the Log and Capture window.
5 In the Capture dialog, enter a name for the clip, then click Capture.
The capture preview window appears and the camcorder begins playing back video
from its current position. The status area of the capture preview window displays the percentage of real time in which the video is being encoded from HDV to the Apple Intermediate Codec.
6 Press the Esc (Escape) key to stop capturing.
The video playback on the camcorder stops immediately. The capture preview window may lag behind, displaying where the video is in the encoding process. As these frames are processed, the status area of the capture preview window displays the percentage of frames left to process.
Note: Pressing the Esc key a second time stops the encoding process and cancels
the capture. After the capture preview window closes, the captured clip appears in your Logging Bin."

  • Sony HVR-V1U in FCP

I can't seem to get this to print to video. Does anyone else have this camera that can help me.
    Thank you

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Cineframe 24, combined with a slow shutter speed give pretty good results on moving shots.
For sport, I do prefer to use a custom picture profil, with more saturation and added sharpness.
Using a steady tripod is the way to go with HDV.

  • FCP and Sony PMW 320 love question

So we are ready to FINALLY upgrade to HD here at our channel. I have been looking at the Sony PMW320s and reading about the MPEG2 Long Frame recording. I wanted to know if anyone has good or bad FCP editing experience with this. From what I can tell it is going to be similar to HDV?
I am mainly concerned about transcoding times to ProRes.
I was hoping to be done with HDV but the fact that it records to SDHC cards as opposed to optical discs that require another $3000 machines at desks is an advantage to me.
Thanks for any input on this...

If I receive HDV media on a hard drive, and don't have time to transcode to ProRes, I usually create a matching HDV timeline, then switch the sequence compressor to ProRes, and change the Render Control codec to ProRes too (even though I could keep it on 'Same as Sequence Codec').
Good. But you don't need to switch the render Control to ProRes, if your sequence already is. Well, actually, if you do this you make an ANAMORPHIC ProRes sequence. Just make a ProRes sequence and drop the HDV into it. THen you are full raster from the get go. But, the other way isn't bad... I've done it.
I switch the sequence to ProRes because I bring in a lot of graphics elements, and usually heavily stylise the images, lots of on-screen texts facts and crawlers etc, so rendering is inevitable.
    Smart smart smart...!
Could you reassure me; if I have limited time and transcoding hours and hours of HDV to ProRes before I edit isn't an option, is the above work-flow correct?
Consider yourself assured. Just edit in a ProRes sequence and all will be good.
