FCP 6 is EXTREMELY slow (sluggish (not fun (annoying)))

Hey apple world! Let me get right into it. I just bought a 15" LED Macbook Pro which is my first laptop and love it like crazy. I have FCP Studio 2 and am usually very good with troubleshooting my own problems, but nothing has helped.
I am creating a demo reel for a client and the media is coming from 5 different DVDs. FCP seems to boot ok, and rendering isn't really as fast as I'd like (with 2.2 Ghz and 3 gigs of RAM), but simple things like pressing play.. or scrubbing through ANYTHING is very choppy, so much to where I have to write a post about it.
I disconnected my external USB drive because I know they aren't recommended for video at all, and transferred the files to a folder on the internal drive which has a capacity of 160gb and about 67 gigs free. Oh, and I'm using a 24" Dell widescreen monitor, but I don't really think that should matter. Also, have a mismatching pair of RAM sticks, but did some research on the new Intel chipset within this MBP and found out that shouldn't matter either.
Any ideas? What's the deal here.. FCP on my old G5 flew all shades of wonderfulness. Please if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

I just started to render a 53 second clip and it's taking about 15 minutes. There are no transitions, as the source media was a QT file.
Now then, you said:
DavidMichael wrote:
I downloaded MacTheRipper to do the obvious, and then MPEG Streamclip to convert..
OK...what codec did you convert this footage INTO? Just saying "a QT file" is meaningless. Quicktime is simply a wrapper that contains MANY MANY codecs. EVERYTHING in your EASY SETUP and more are QT file codecs. You are still having issues then it might point to the CODEC being used as well.
You say you are rendering a 53 second clip. WHY? What filters did you add? Did you just drop it into the timeline and now are rendering? If so, that points to the fact that your sequence settings and clip settings do not match. You really shouldn't have to render a clip every time you add it to the timeline. That would be VERY counter-productive. Nope, you should just add a clip to the timeline, see it, NO RENDERING, and work away. A good codec to use? DV/NTSC...or DV50. And again, you need to make sure that the timeline matches...which is where the Easy Setups come into play.
Or did you add filters? Some filters require more rendering than others.
What EXACTLY IS HAPPENING?

  • 1415 fnw printer wireless connection extremely slow or not working with OS X, works with windows

The wireless connection to the printer is either extremely slow or not working at all on OS X Yosemite.  It shows up in the list of printers in Bonjour in Safari, and I can connect to parts of the web interface if I wait a very long time.  However, I cannot add the printer as a new printer in System Preferences even though the printer shows up.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware.  The WiFi indicator on the printer is on, "green", and it has a reserved IP showing up in my router (ComCast).  It seems that Windows machines can printer to the printer wirelessly without a problem.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello @sscotti,
I would like to assist you today with installing your wireless HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer on your Mac OS X 10.10 Computer. Now you indicate in your post that this printer works fine with Windows computers, and you are able to 'see' the Bonjour printer on your Mac. Therefore, the issue that you are experiencing is not network related. Rather, I do believe that you are experiencing a driver conflict on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. Can I please have you run the steps below to resolve this issue.
Step 1: Uninstall Drivers and Software:
First, I'm going to have you 'clean up' your Mac OS X 10.10 computer to verify that any trace of your Laserjet printer is gone so we have a nice clean slate to work with. Please click here and when the website opens select the drop down for 'Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, and OS X v10.9' as the steps are the same for Mac OS X 10.10. Run the appropriate uninstall steps for the method in which you originally tried to install your printer: Apple Updates, or the HP Driver download.
Once the uninstall is complete, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
    Go to the Utilities Folder
    Open the Disk Utility
Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
    Select Verify Disk Permissions
Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
Step 3: Check for Apple Updates:
    Go to Apple
    Select System Preferences
    Select Software Update
    Click Update Now
    Install your available updates
    Restart your computer
Step 4: Reinstall your Software and Drivers:
Please click here to download the appropriate Mac OS X 10.10 drivers for your HP Laserjet printer.
Once the website opens select the 'download' button on the top left
Once the download has completed, please follow the onscreen steps to reinstall your printer.
Once the reinstall is complete, test the print and scan functions to ensure that your printer is functioning as per normal.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should you still be experiencing issues there are additional steps I can have you run through. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

  • ITunes download is extremely slow or not working, am I the only one experiencing this, iTunes download is extremely slow or not working, am I the only one experiencing this

iTunes download is extremely slow or not working, am I the only one experiencing this, iTunes download is extremely slow or not working, am I the only one experiencing this?

I do not have a solution, just the same complaint.  ***!  !    I just used the iTunes store 2 weeks ago and now, after reviewing everything they asked for including ID/Pass/ Account Info etc.  I can't even get into the store.  I have tried asking at the Mac store and it has all been to no avail.  I was perfectly happy with iTunes before all of this ********... seriously what is the issue with iTunes?  They ask me to upload a new version (with no system specs anywhere that I can find on the page)  and then say it can't utilized because of system inadequacy.  It is exceedingly frustrating.

  • Tabs won't appear, extremely slow, does not save settings.

For the past few months I've been experiencing a host of difficulties with Firefox. When I open a new window, the appearance is totally different from what the original window was, with the "Open a new tab" button on the left instead of the right, and the current tab that opens is not visible in the bar. When I try to change this in the settings, it just doesn't seem to take. This same problem is true for any window, secondary or otherwise. If I close everything, open a new session, change the settings to how I like them (which I have to do every time) and then close that window, nothing stays the way I set it.
Also, the browser runs extremely slow. And when I say extreme, I mean it can take 20 minutes to open a new session. And once I start using it, it likes to periodically speed up to a normal pace for a few minutes, hours, days - it's not predictable - and then come to a crashing halt again.
The final problem is less irritating, but equally perplexing. I have a few folders in my bookmarks toolbar that contain anywhere from 10-50 websites each, and they like to spontaneously auto-scroll to the top of the list, despite my attempts to scroll down. This problem just goes on and on until it suddenly stops for unknown reasons.
I would really, REALLY appreciate some help clearing up these problems. Thanks!

    I see such issues my self.<br />
It usually helps to close and restore that tab (History > Recently Closed Tabs; Cmd+Shift+T) to make the others appear.

  • MacBook Pro Extremely Slow / Sluggish

I have a MacBook Pro latest edition 13" with 2.66 processor 8GB RAM and 500GB HD. It has been extremely slow. Opening applications can take ages. Opening Pages can take 2 minutes to create a blank page and iMovie can be as long. The spinning beach ball appears when typing in Filemaker Pro and stops anything from happening for 30 seconds or so every now and then. Apps frequently go into (not responding). I went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they said that there has been a problem with Migration Assistant (I have been migrating Macs for many years) and perhaps shifting some apps has made the system sludgy. Their suggestion is a complete wipe, restore and rebuild. Which I'm not much looking forward to doing. Does anyone have any other ideas.

Running Applejack might help in this situation. (Probably not necessary -- Applejack is quite safe -- but you should have a backup.) You probably want to run "applejack AUTO," which will do a full sequence of tasks. Then go back in and run "applejack" just for tasks 3 & 4 for your users. It may require several restarts for you to see the full benefits. The first restart will be slower than usual as it rebuilds caches.

Also, how much free space on the drive?

  • IMac hard drive extremely slow (but not on BootCamp)

My iMac 20" from late 2006 has suddenly become extremely slow, meaning it read/writes from/to the harddisk at a very slow rate, down to 1 MBps according to Disk Speed Bench X. It's impossible to use the computer now and I haven't done anything special lately to make this happen, except downloading a lot of files lately that took a lot of space (down to 3 GB left on my 250 GB drive), until I deleted them again.
Interestingly, my BootCamp partition with XP Professional is working perfectly.
What is the solution? A new drive? I'm trying to restore it from Time Machine now, but it's taking forever... Oh, and I have used Onyx and repaired all rights, and Disk Tools reports that everything is in perfect order.

Ack - sorry. Doing two things at once and I missed that. Still, having gotten down to 2GB and now at 20GB, you may well have developed some fragmentation issues. First, run Disk Utility and make sure there's nothing that needs to be repaired. This might explain the slow down. If it passes, or if you successfully repair the drive, and the disk is still slow, consider defragging the drive. Ordinarily the Mac OS doesn't need it but when your drive becomes very full the Mac's built in defragging methodology doesn't work so well.

  • Why is my Macbook pro now extremely slow and not running things like powerpoint any more?

I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Mavericks installed. Now my Macbook Pro is slower than a one-legged tortoise.
It won't run powerpoint, which just crashes. en my keyboard misses the first part of sentences because it can't keep up. I have to double check everything I type. I'm trying to run a business, and I'm losing time, money and the will to live.
I cannot reinstall microsoft office, as I bought my macbook Pro (2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) from a seller who cleanly installed Mountain lion for me, and installed Office 11 on it. I do not have any installation disks. I have been forced to downgrade to Mountain Lion, which I'm still waiting for Apple to send to me.
Is there anyone out there who can give me any help. I'm not paying Apple any more money. Why should I? I've already been forced to rebuy an operating system that my Macbook previously had installed.
Not only that, I think I have an expanding battery issue, and my trackpad is now broken. Just to add to my woes.
Has anyone had a solution to solving the Mavericks debacle?
    Please somebody, help.
    Please.
    Before I start self harming.

    Hi all;
I agree with stobston,  many thanks to cbs20 for your inputs.  I was stuck with this one also.   I'm a former UNIX sysadmin; thanks so much for pointer to etrecheck.  It's nice to be able to look under the hood.

Note that I had no heavy CPU processes like stobston had.  There are some processes using lots of memory  though.  Made me wonder, could it be  a swap or contention issue?  I have a Macbook Air, so 'swapping' doesn't mean what it used to mean.  Anyway, I tried closing Excel and Finder.  Powerpoint was still slow.   I ran etrechek again.  WebProcess and mds are still running at the same memory usage; nearly half a gig between them.  WebProcess is Safari; shutting down Safari didn't help.   I have heard that Safari has had memory leaks, I don't know if that's true or not.  mds is the MetaData Server for SpotLight. I had run Spotlight several times today, and also did a lot of desktop cleanup.   That might have triggered mds.
I don't know how well Mountain Lion reclaims memory ( now I'm really getting into the weeds ), so I shut down  MacOS  and restarted it.  This time, I started up PowerPoint first, with nothing else running.  Problem solved.  PPT is running fine.
Thanks again all for your inputs.  An hour ago, I had no idea where to start.

  • Safari is loading webpages extremely slow and not loading images...

Not loading webpages a lot of the time and not loading images on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. I'm new to Mac and I'm running Safari on a Mac Mini. Help? Also deleted ~/Libraries/Safari and it didn't work.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Mac Mini extremely slow - Superdrive not working

I have a 2006 Mac Mini that has the following issues:
-cannot keep a wireless connection w/Airport (PC's in the house do)
-will not recognize dvds/cds nor will it write them
-slows to snail pace when running more than 1 application at a time
My brother suggested using the installs discs to whipe the mac clean because it would get rid of any virus/worm that might be on there.
My question is: Will upgrading from Tiger to Leopard whipe everything anyway, in addition to losing every file on my mac? Also, if I do have a virus/worm then what is the best protection for Macs?
I'm almost ready to give up and go back to Windows. I'm so frustrated with my mac!

Hi airheadial, and a warm welcome to the forums!
hpr3 gives some good advice to start with.
How much Memory do you have? How full is the Hard Drive?
It's not likely you have a Virus infection.
You could upgrade to Leopard without losing any files, but I don't think it'll cure the problem, especially difficult with no Superdrive!

  • FCP 5 running EXTREMELY slow???

I have a G5 dual 1.8Ghz with 2.5GBs of ram and a 300GB hard drive, and yet even moving a clip in the time line seems to take about 5 to 10 seconds of the spinning ball to do.
The clips I'm using are Quicktime files I captured using Snapz Pro. So they were recorded right off the computer screen.
Is it the high quality frame rate of the clips that's slowing everything down? The rendering of these clips does take quite a long time (a 10 second clip can be up to 20 minutes to render.)
Or is it the fact that I have a lot of individual clips in the time line? Probably about 50 to 80 individual clips.
What's going on here? Why is my system so bogged down?

  • Wifi extremely slow when not right next to the router?

    Hey,
bought a new macbook air last week with Mountain Lion (I've fully updated it) and it seems to be having a few wi-fi problems. Although wifi speed is fine when in the same room as the router, the speed drops of significantly when in just the next room, and even small sites take about 10 seconds to load. I'm using an Virgin Media 54g router but the problem remains the same with a Belkin 54g router as well. The recieved speed in my room (a couple of floors up admittedly) is 11 and speedtest.net shows a 0.05mbps download speed and (strangely) a 1mbps upload speed when I can connect at all.I haven't yet had the oppurtunity to try n or 5ghz routers, but as the rest of the network uses the Virgin Media one, I'd like to be able to reliably connect to this.
I've tried suggestions online such as creating a new location, disabling bluetooth, tried a new user, a new router and renewing DHCP lease etc. but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions to try? I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware issue, but I thought this was the most appropriate place to put this.
    Thanks in advance,
    George Bryan

It's normal, of course, for Wi-Fi performance to fall off with distance between the client and the access point. Whether your MBA is performing normally can only be determined by taking it to an Apple Store or AASP for testing.

  • IPhone 3gs charging EXTREMELY slow, and not showing it's connected.

So my iPhone just started doing this last night, I plugged it in before sleep, and noticed it didn't show that it was connceted, and I wiggled the calbe around and tried connecting it to my laptop instead of the wall charger and nothing. So I plugged it back onto my wall charger and looked it up on Google, and found some people have fixed this by doing a reset, I did it, that didn't help, so by this time my phone was still plugged in and noticed it had gone up from 39% to 40%, but it wasn't showing it was connceted. So I left it to charge over night, and it only charged up to 89% in about 6 hours.
Has anyone seen this problem before, and what do you recommend?

    Here's what you do
1.Make sure your phone is not plugged into the computer.
    2. Put the iPhone into recovery mode (this is NOT DFU mode). Do this by
a). Hold down both the power/sleep button and the home button until the screen turns black/off
b). As soon as this happens release the power button but NOT the home button
c). If done correctly then the Apple logo will appear, KEEP HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON and eventually a connect to itunes graphic will appear. You can release the home button
    3. With the connect to itunes graphic on the screen, plug your phone into the computer. iTunes will start up if it is not already on, and then will say the phone needs restoring. Ignore this and COMPLETELY quit iTunes.
    4. With iTunes off and the graphic still on the phone screen, hold down both the power/sleep and the home button again for 9 seconds (count 100, 200, 300...) or until the screen goes black
    5. When the screen goes black release the home button straight away.
    6. It will start up with the iPhone activation screen ignore this. iTunes should have started up, if not do so. Go to the iPhone tab and either resotre from backup or set up as a new phone.
    You're welcome

  • FCP 6.0.1 Running and previewing extremly slow

Ever since I upgraded to 6.0.1 FCP is running extremly slow.
In my current project, I brought in a HDV QT.mov that needed to be Chroma Keyed and color adjusted. Previewing the chroma keyed file looks horrible (all jagged) unless I render it. That takes time. Then I added a piece of stock DV footage under that, blurred the background and it played back like crap until I rendered it. More time. And so on.
I can't make any adjustment and see how it looks without rendering.
When I was working in 5.1 FCP I was able to add all type of files and zip right through them pretty much. Now I can't seem to get my settings right or something...so as I apply different effects or filters I can never see on the fly how it looks without rendering it first. Then of course...if it's not right...I tweak it again but can't see how that looks until I render it again.
All my video files resides on a RAID that I created from 2 of my internal drives and it also is my scratch & render disk.
It's eating my lunch on production time.
    Any suggestions Please.

You could try setting the render in the sequences you work with to ProRes. Found in that sequence setting's video processing tab.
But the real fix is to not work in HDV at all. If you have an Intel mac, a capture card like the Kona LHe card will transcode your HDV directly to ProRes... or AJA's Io HD (at the high end of this workflow) will transcode the HDV to ProRes on board the box itself... The Io will take your HDMI signal directly from the camera and transcode it to anything. It starts shipping any day now.
You're a brave soul attempting chroma keys with HDV... they are nigh on impossible to look good. But ProRes will make the rendering times go way down, and give you more real time playback of effects.

While 4GB may have been fine with Snow Leopard or Lion, that was 4 years ago.
If you have never done a clean install consider doing one. Backup, clone, setup a USB installer and wipe the system. Or wait for the new internal 500GB drive (so you are back to using about 50%) to do a clean install and run Setup Assistant. You would be surprised how even just that can feel and run.
RAM is pretty much a given so when you do, look at putting a 500GB SSD in there as well.

  • USB connection suddenly extremely slow

As I ususally have manny film, series on my external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreeme, I suddenly got a big supprise when the speed suddenly got extremely slow. Not possible to use it for anything. The internet connection is however perfect.
As it has allways functioned perfectly for me I don´t know what to do. It was about that time I uppdated the Java pack resently submitted by Apple. But I can´t see why this should have aything to do with this.
Has anyone had any simmilar problems, and what is the remedy. I am all blank....

Keep in mind that the very first device you connect will determine the default speed for the entire USB bus.  So, if you boot up the MBP, log in, and plug in a USB2 device, then the bus will never operate faster than USB2.  You would then need to reboot the computer, and first connect the USB3 device to ensure the bus steps up to USB3 speeds for USB3 devices.
Also, make sure you are using a USB3 compatible cable with any USB3 devices to get max. transfer speeds.
